Coffee to cost more from today as higher costs bite producers

The price of instant and ready-to-drink coffee will rise from today, impacting coffee business operators and consumers, the Thai Wholesale and Retail Trade Assn. said yesterday.

Hua Hin hotels’ occupancy rate up 7.7% in 2024

Thailand’s luxury hotels experienced strong growth in average daily rates (ADR) throughout 2024, increasing by 5.3% year-on-year and 42.7% compared to 2019, according to STR, a global leader in hotel industry research.

Occupancy rates in seven of Thailand’s tourist cities showed steady growth throughout last year, signaling the continued recovery of the Thai hotel industry. STR reported that Chiang Mai experienced the largest year-on–year occupancy increase, at 15.1%, followed by Krabi (13.2%), Samui (11.9%), Hua Hin (7.7%), Bangkok (6.5%), Pattaya (4.7%) and Phuket (4.4%). Whole of Bangkok shrouded in Orange-level PM2.5 dust today

All 50 districts of Bangkok are affected by PM2.5 dust exceeding the 37.5µg/m³ (micron) safe level. The average is 60.2µg/m³, which is categorized as “Orange” (unhealthy for sensitive groups), according to the Air Quality Information Center of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

PM2.5 dust levels in northern Bangkok range between 55.3and 64.2µg/m³, 53.4-73.9µg/m³ in eastern Bangkok, 53.9-64.6µg/m³ in the center and 55.1-66.7µg/m³ in the southern part. Continued …

Bangkok campaign targets rice field burning to combat air pollution

Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt has announced a campaign to eliminate burning in rice fields to tackle air pollution caused by fine particulate matter (PM2.5).

Thailand’s economy slowed in December last year on a monthly basis from weaker exports and manufacturing, the central bank said yesterday.

Thai factory output misses forecast as car output slumps

Thailand’s manufacturing production index dropped by a more than expected 2.1% in December from a year earlier, due to a slump in the automotive industry and weak consumption, the Industry Ministry reported yesterday.

Thailand Enforces Burning Ban to Combat PM2.5 Pollution

Thailand has instituted a nationwide burning ban to address escalating PM2.5 pollution levels, as stagnant air circulation is expected to persist until early February, potentially exacerbating the situation. The government, keen on mitigating the pollution at its source, announced strict enforcement of the ban across the country.

Experts urge Thailand to halve PM2.5 safe limit to cut cancer cases

Medical experts have called on the Thai government to slash its safe limit of PM2.5 air pollution by more than half, saying this would reduce cancer cases in the country by 44%.

The air quality in most areas of the Bangkok metropolitan region exceeded the safety standard this morning, the Air Quality Information Center of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said.

New railcars on the way – but not until 2030

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has approved a 24.15-billion-baht procurement plan for 184 new air-conditioned diesel railcars, replacing aging rolling stock that has been in service for over three decades.

SRT Gov. Veeris Ammarapala confirmed that the project will replace 10 long-distance passenger trains and introduce 52 new trains, 46 for medium-range routes and six for long-distance travel. Routes for Surat Thani and Chumphon are included in the upgrade. Continued …

Fiscal office anticipates GDP growth of up to 3.5%

The Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) expects economic expansion of up to 3.5% is likely this year, rising from 2.5% last year. However, the Finance Ministry’s planning unit still projects average annual growth of 3% this year, within a range of 2.5% to 3.5%.

Weak consumption holding back Thai economy: central bank

Thailand’s economic growth may falter this year, following a weaker-than-expected fourth quarter when consumption cratered despite a government cash handout aimed up firing up sluggish growth, according to Bank of Thailand Gov. Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput.

Unsafe levels of smog in 67 provinces

Sixty-seven out of 77 provinces in Thailand were shrouded with unsafe levels of ultrafine dust pollution this morning, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Operator of plastic waste warehouse that caught fire ‘violated industrial laws’

The scent of fragrant lemongrass mingles with earthy ginger and tangy tamarind, punctuated by the sharp, menthol-like aroma of camphor. It’s a familiar smell for spa-goers: a traditional Thai herbal compress. The treatment combines herbs in a cotton cloth, which is wrapped into a compact ball and steamed for around 10 minutes before the practitioner applies it to the body, typically after a massage.

Herbal compresses have been used for centuries for muscle aches, joint pain, and to reduce inflammation. However, it’s unclear how much benefit comes from the herbs: a 2015 review paper highlighted that the effects were mainly associated with heat, which increases blood flow and reduces pain. Thailand’s automotive sector continues to face significant economic and financial headwinds as of the third quarter of 2024. According to data provided by the Asean Automotive Federation, total vehicle sales declined by 25.3% year-on-year as of September 2024 to tally 438,303 units.

Vehicle production followed the downward trend in sales, declining by 18.6% year-on-year over the same period to total 1.13 million units. Thailand’s agricultural sector chalked up a trade surplus of over 900 million baht in the first 10 months of the year, driven by strong export performance, a senior official of the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) said on Thursday.

Total agricultural trade value climbed to 2.15 trillion baht between January and October, representing a 6.49% increase compared to the same period in 2023, office Secretary-general Chantanon Wannakejohn, said. Temperatures set to soar in Hua Hin this week and next

Temperatures in Hua Hin and across Thailand are set to soar over the next week. The Thai Meteorological Department’s seven-day forecast for Hua Hin says maximum temperatures will range from 36–38 °C, with average temperatures between March 6-12 reaching 35°C.

The data from the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) come as Thailand’s air quality is worsening. Salt, sea and spoonbills

During a morning stroll through vast salt fields in the seaside town of Samut Sakhon, I couldn’t resist but take breathtaking photos of a large flock of birds. Close by, experienced birdwatcher Suchart Daengpayon (also known as Mr. Tee) led a small group of foreign tourists on a trip to see the food-seeking behaviors of the spoon-billed sandpiper, an endangered shorebird species.

Fortunately, Mr. Tee kindly allowed me to use his spotting scope and gave me a brief overview of bird conservation efforts in tambon Khok Kham. Over 30 years ago, he and his neighbors established the Khok Kham Natural Conservation Club after working with an international survey team that wanted to get insights on the biodiverse marine habitats in Thailand’s wetlands.
