Dusit Ajara Hua Hin opens in Cha-am

Dusit Thani has announced Dusit Ajara Hua Hin, an ultra-luxury residential development featuring over 60% green space. This is the second project by Dusit Thani as a property developer, following Dusit Residences and Dusit Parkside at Dusit Central Park.

Located at 1349 Petchkasem Road, Petchaburi, Cha-am, Dusit Ajara Hua Hin features leisure gardens, kids’ playgrounds, a wellness studio, and salt water pools. Mental health problems increasing in Thailand

Some 13.4 million Thais claim to have experienced mental health problems, with people aged 45–59, known as the pre-senior group, reporting the lowest happiness levels, according to the Thai Health Report 2025.

A Scottish man living in Thailand had both legs amputated after a motorbike crash with a lorry in Bangkok.

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has reported that wild elephants are straying beyond their forest habitats in eastern Thailand, traveling over 30 kilometers in search of food.

Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.

Cha Am Police Nab Man After High-Speed Chase

A 34-year-old man from Nakhon Pathom was arrested following a 70-kilometer police pursuit that began in Hua Hin and ended in Cha Am, after he allegedly fled a checkpoint out of fear police would discover two illegal firearms and a counterfeit license plate hidden on his vehicle.

The chase, which involved multiple patrol units, concluded when the suspect’s red Toyota Yaris lost control and crashed into a utility pole before careening into a rice field near Ban Nai Yang, rendering the vehicle inoperable. No injuries were reported. Continued …

PM2.5, gene changes behind lung cancer spike

PM2.5 air pollution and mutations in the EGFR gene are major drivers behind the increasing incidence of lung cancer among non-smoking women, particularly across Asia, says a leading Thai oncologist.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Naiyarat Prasongsook, a medical oncologist at Phramongkutklao Hospital, said more than 2.48 million people worldwide are living with lung cancer. Thailand unveils new traffic ticket formats

The Royal Gazette has published an announcement from the Royal Thai Police (RTP) detailing the new formats for traffic tickets, effective today. The updated designs, intended to align with administrative fine orders, include three formats as part of its 2025 implementation.

The new traffic ticket formats include: A format for traffic tickets given to drivers, either attached, tied, or displayed on vehicles. This format consists of four sheets, each serving a distinct purpose: the first is white and is affixed to the vehicle. The second is yellow and sent to the administrative fines authority for data entry into the National Police’s central information system. Heavy rain forecast in Hua Hin throughout the week

Residents and visitors in Hua Hin are being advised to prepare for a prolonged spell of wet weather, with heavy rainfall expected across the city for much of the coming week.

According to the Thai Meteorological Department’s 7-day forecast, Hua Hin is likely to see heavy rain every day through Saturday , with rainfall affecting between 40% and 60% of the area each day. More than half of edible flowers contaminated with pesticides

Two studies have found that more than half of sampled edible flowers in Thailand were contaminated with hazardous pesticides. The findings were presented recently at the 33rd Medical Academic Meeting held at the Impact Forum in Muang Thong Thani, Nonthaburi.

The first study was conducted by the Food Quality and Safety Office, under the Department of Medical Sciences, in collaboration with officials from the department’s offices in Chiang Rai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Songkhla, and Chonburi. Survey finds public blames monks’ misconduct for Buddhism’s decline

The National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) has released the findings of a new public opinion survey titled “Crisis in Buddhism!”, revealing widespread concerns among Thai Buddhists over the state of the clergy.

Conducted by NIDA Poll between July 14–16, the survey gathered responses from 1,310 Buddhists aged 18 and above across all regions, education levels, occupations, and income brackets nationwide. Thailand ‘can’t match’ Vietnam’s US tariff proposals

Thailand o the United States as Vietnam did, warns Somjai Phagaphasvivat, an expert in international economics, who added that Vietnam was able to remove tariffs on all U.S. imports because it has free trade agreements (FTAs) with 27 countries, which have already reduced most of Vietnam’s import tariffs to zero. In contrast, Thailand is unlikely to do the same, because it has FTAs with fewer countries than Vietnam does, he said.

“Nevertheless, one thing we must consider is that, at some point, we may have to do what Vietnam did in the future. We will need to enhance our competitiveness, and when the time comes and we have more FTAs with other countries, we’ll be able to open up fully,” said Somjai. Continued …

Tourism revival goes into reverse

Over the past three years, Thai tourism has been struggling to regain the peak it once reached prior to the pandemic, while neighboring countries Malaysia and Vietnam have already surpassed their performance in 2019, recording 37 million and 17 million tourist arrivals, respectively.

The closest opportunity occurred in 2024 when Thailand welcomed 35.5 million foreign tourists, an increase of 26% year-on-year. However, repeating the success of 2019 when 39.9 million foreign tourists arrived and spending hit 1.9 trillion baht is unlikely to occur in 2025, given that Thailand only attracted 16.6 million foreign arrivals in the first half, dipping 4.6% year-on-year. Electric mass transit pledge to zap pollution in Chiang Mai

The Thai prime minister noted that the fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) levels had considerably decreased since his visit last year.

Three major diseases — Covid-19, influenza, and dengue fever — could spread to the level of a pandemic this year, according to the Thai Department of Disease Control (DDC), which named 12 seasonal and group-specific diseases as under surveillance.

News that Hua Hin’s airport would not be accepting international flights for 2-3 years came as a shock to many local expats, who had been told flights might start later this year. It turns out there is a lot more work to do to bring the airport up to international standards, including a major reconstruction of the highway tunnel supporting the airport runway (that’s sure to foul up traffic on the important north-south expressway). Bhumjaithai comes on board to form government as Pheu Thai accepts its conditions

The Pheu Thai Party and Bhumjaithai Party on Monday evening announced progress in forming a new coalition government. Pheu Thai leader Cholanan Srikaew and outgoing Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul held a press conference at the Pheu Thai headquarters at 4pm.

After their initial discussions two weeks ago, Bhumjaithai has responded positively to the invitation to form a government with Pheu Thai, they told the press. Continued …

The news that Pheu Thai is now in an alliance with the Bhumjai Thai Party to form a government should come as no surprise to longtime observers of Thai politics. Machiavellian measures always trumps ideals in this world.

But it does leave a bad taste in the mouth for people who took Pheu Thai at face value over the past few years as they attacked the coalition parties while they were in the opposition. Thailand says no rice export halt, to benefit from India’s export ban

Thailand is benefiting from India’s rice export ban and has no reason to halt its own shipments, as it has sufficient output for exports and domestic consumption, its commerce minister said on Monday.

India in late July ordered a halt to its largest rice export category in a move that will roughly halve shipments by the world’s largest exporter of the grain, triggering fears of further inflation on global food markets. Continued …

Property developers hold back new projects amid political uncertainty

Real estate developers are delaying the launch of new projects, especially condominiums, in a trend that is expected to continue into the third quarter due to ongoing political uncertainty.

According to Prapansak Rakchaiwan, managing director of LWS Wisdom and Solution, a subsidiary of LPN Development Group, property developers could expedite project launches in the fourth quarter if the political situation improves. Thailand’s 2023 inflation forecast to be 1-2%, the lowest in ASEAN

Thailand’s inflation rate is the lowest among the seven ASEAN countries that have already announced their rates, with inflation for the whole year expected to range between 1% and 2%, according to Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the Commerce Ministry’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office.

Based on information from June, he said Thailand’s low inflation rate is in line with global inflation, which is steadily falling, and is the lowest compared to Laos, Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. Continued …

Sluggish commodity prices positive for core inflation

The Ministry of Commerce said the domestic general inflation rate for May increased by only 0.53% year-on-year, the lowest level in the past 21 months, due to sluggish prices of petroleum, electricity, and food products. This figure is much lower than the 2.7% figure the financial market projected for May of this year.

According to Wichanun Niwatjinda, deputy director-general of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), the main reasons for this relatively low inflation rate are slow-moving prices of petroleum, electricity, and food products, combined with the low base price used for calculating the inflation rate in May. TPIPP to phase out coal-fired power generation by 2026

TPI Polene Power Plc (TPIPP), a leading waste-to-energy project developer and operator in Thailand, is set to continue its five-year capital expenditure plan of 14 billion baht. The plan, which began last year, aims to replace coal usage with renewable energy sources and increase the company’s power-generation capacity.

TPIPP has earmarked 3 billion baht for projects focused on reducing coal imports and eliminating coal-fired power generation by 2026, according to Worawit Lerdbussarakam, the company’s vice president. In 2021, coal accounted for half of the total electricity generation of 440 megawatts. By 2024, coal usage is projected to decrease by 30% to 150MW of the new total capacity of 502MW. Continued …

Expat News visits Phetchaburi wildlife rescue foundation

We had the opportunity to tour the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand facility in Phetchaburi recently. More about the foundation HERE.

WFFT currently houses more than 800 animals in 70 different species, including a cougar from Canada and a chimpanzee from Africa. The facility is huge, with concrete construction and metal cages prominent throughout, and extensive new construction underway.

They need the space, as they expect to add as many as 20 tigers and 20 leopards to the mix after a camp in northern Thailand closed. WFFT currently has 4 tigers and no leopards.

Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park wins ‘green shield’

Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan province has won the Green National Park Shield for outstanding environmental management.

The award was announced on Wednesday by Pongsakorn Promkhunthod, chief of Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park.

Turkey earthquake a daunting debut for Thailand’s international rescue team

The concept of a national urban search and rescue (USAR) team set up for large-scale natural or man-made disasters is rather new in Thailand. The country’s only USAR team has just returned from its first international mission, aiding search efforts following the devastating earthquake that leveled thousands of buildings in southern Turkey and northern Syria on Feb. 6.

USAR Thailand was set up in 2014 but its status as a national USAR team was only officially recognized by the National Emergency Operations Center on Feb. 2 last year, according to the Interior Ministry’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).

The national USAR team comes under the department, which is working with relevant state agencies and private entities to ensure its potential and capabilities meet international standards. Continued …

When the public health official who gave Thailand legal weed promoted a heavy-handed crackdown on electronic cigarettes this week, one couldn’t be blamed for asking: Just what was he smoking?

No appointment needed for international driving permit

People can apply for an international driving permit without making an appointment, says the Department of Land Transport (DLT).

Deputy Director-general Seksom Akaraphan on Wednesday said international driving permits are available at land transport offices nationwide without the need for an appointment, and cost 505 baht.

Thais who want to apply must bring their passport, ID card, original driving license in Thailand and two non-glossy photos sized two inches taken in the last six months. Continued …

PM promises Thailand won’t be a dump, plastic-scrap imports face ban

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha pledged on Wednesday to ban the import of plastic waste from 2025 if he is re-elected, saying Thailand will not be a dump for other countries.

This will prevent Thailand from being perceived as the “garbage bin of the world”, Prayut said.

He made the statement in a Facebook post, a day after the Cabinet agreed to ban the import of plastic waste from 2025. Continued …

Asia’s largest hub for content creators in Bangkok 40% complete

Cloud 11, a project to build Asia’s largest hub for content creators and a center where the new generation can pursue careers and develop businesses in content creation, is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2024, the developers said.

The project is being built at a cost of 40 billion baht by leading property developer Magnolia Quality Development Corp. (MQDC). Construction on 254,000 square meters of land on Sukhumvit Road near BTS Udomsuk station, Bangkok, began last year and is 40% complete.

Narong Chearavanont, honorary chairman of Cloud 11 Advisory Committee, said technologies and innovations are playing an important role in the global economy. The Thai economy is set to bounce back from a surprising contraction in the fourth quarter of 2022, as foreign tourist arrivals are likely to surprise on the upside and counter headwinds to merchandise exports from a global slowdown, say leading economists.

Australian miner Kingsgate resumes gold operation in Thailand

Australia’s Kingsgate Consolidated, which runs the Chatree gold mine in Thailand, said it is restarting operations there after a six-year dispute between the company and the Thai government over the health and environmental effects of the mine was resolved.

Ross Smyth-Kirk, executive chairman of Kingsgate, operator of the mine since 2001 under the wholly owned Thai subsidiary Akara Resources, said the company has received an expanded metallurgical license and the processing plant has been overhauled.

“The refurbishment engineering contractors have started to demobilize, and subject to a final inspection by Thai government agencies and the delivery of key reagents required for ore processing, the commissioning of Plant 2 will start this month, leading to a ramp up into steady state production,” he said in a statement. Cannabis bill running out of time

Thailand’s parliament is running out of time to pass a much-awaited bill to regulate wider use of cannabis, as lawmakers remained divided over key provisions of the legislation, leaving the nation’s fast-growing industry in a regulatory limbo.

The House of Representatives failed to conclude the second reading of the bill on Wednesday, the last session earmarked for the controversial legislation before it goes into a recess next week. The delay was caused by some factions of lawmakers arguing that the bill lacked the teeth to prevent recreational use of cannabis and demanding the plant be listed as a narcotic again.

With Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha planning to dissolve parliament next month before polls slated for May, the fate of the bill will depend on the next government. A bill typically needs to be passed by a majority of the members at three readings, before being sent for a Senate approval to become law. Continued …

Phuket reports over 500 motorbike accidents in 2 months involving tourists

Phuket’s vice governor reported that over 500 motorbike accidents have occurred in the area involving foreign tourists in the past two months. Vice Gov. Anuphap led a meeting on the increasingly pressing issue yesterday.

Anuphap said many of the accidents involved foreign tourists who had rented motorbikes.

He said, “Eighty percent of them do not have driving licenses, some were wearing swimsuits, driving at high speed, and not familiar with routes. From January to February, there were more than 500 accidents involving foreign tourists.” Continued …

Russians make Thailand a refuge as Ukraine war enters second year

Since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, a growing number of Russians have looked to Thailand as their ticket to a new life.

Tens of thousands of Russians hoping to avoid the threat of conscription and the economic ravages of the war have traveled to the kingdom in the year since the invasion, many of them seeking a new home.

In Phuket, a popular resort island, Russians are buying off-plan condos with half a million dollars or more to facilitate their relocation or provide a landing pad for a future time when they may feel forced to leave their homeland.

Between Nov. 1, 2022, and Jan.21, 2023, more than 233,000 Russians arrived in Phuket, according to data from Phuket International Airport, making them the biggest group of visitors by far. Continued …

Hotels, tour agents fix gaze on China

Spending among Chinese tourists has not been affected by the global economic slowdown, as there is huge pent-up demand following a three-year hiatus, helping to stimulate the market, says a travel agent group.

Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), said Chinese tourists coming to Thailand during this quarter were mostly individual travelers who haven’t been affected by the sluggish economy.

However, Chinese tour groups, which were allowed to travel to Thailand since Feb. 6, are only expected to account for 10% of the Chinese market in the first quarter, with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) estimating 300,000 arrivals from the mainland during that period. Continued …

Thai tourism entrepreneurs not ready for foreign visitors

Most tourism-related small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are unprepared for the return of foreign visitors this year, according to a nationwide survey. Meanwhile, many say their post-Covid recovery depends more on domestic tourists than foreign visitors.

The Office of Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion (OSMEP) surveyed 572 business owners from six regions about their readiness and tourism in 2023.

The survey found that locals make up more than 50% of SMEs’ customers in the tourism industry, while 47.4% of SMEs have a specific customer group in their province. Continued …

Pay to play: The latest destinations charging visitor fees in 2023

Visitors heading to Thailand will have to pay a small entry fee from June, it has been confirmed.

Whether exploring Thailand’s vibrant cities or relaxing on its picture-perfect beaches, you’ll have to pay extra this year – but not by much.

The government has been given the go-ahead to apply an entry fee of up to 300 baht to all international visitors, regardless of where they’re coming from. Those who arrive by air will be charged 300 baht (about $9), which will be added to airline ticket prices. While those who arrive by bus, train, or boat will have to pay an additional 150 baht ($4) for their fare. Continued …

Airports of Thailand (AOT) chose flag carrier Thai Airways to trial a new biometric check-in service at Suvarnabhumi Airport, starting on its Bangkok – Singapore route.

AOT hopes that bolstering facial recognition technology will streamline the check-in process and reduce waiting times.

New Miss Thailand PKK crowned

Nong Khanom was crowned as “Miss Thailand Prachuap Khiri Khan 2023” at Hua Hin’s Market Village Sunday. Twenty-five-year-old “Nong Khanom”, or Pachara Kritsanaserani, holds a bachelor’s degree in airline business from the School of Tourism and Service, Suan Dusit University, Hua Hin campus. She will now go on to represent Prachuap Khiri Khan province at the Miss Thailand beauty pageant later this year. (HHT)

Cha Am pet health center reopens

The People and Animals Thailand (PAT) Cha-Am clinic has reopened and able to renew efforts to manage and reduce the suffering of street animals to become a happier and healthier population.

The PAT clinic helped more than 6,000 dogs and cats when it first opened in 2019, before it was forced to close due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The clinic is located on Phetchakasim Road between Hua Hin and Cha Am, and uses modern surgical techniques to desex and vaccinate around 200-300 street animals per month.

The tragic death last weekend of Duangphet Phromthep, one of 12 members of the Wild Boar soccer team at a prestigious British football academy, has left Thailand, his friends and family stunned, bringing an abrupt end to what appeared like a fairytale story for the soccer-loving teenager.

The exact circumstances of his death have yet to be explained but it is understood to have been a tragic accident resulting in a head injury, which will be adjudicated on by a UK coroners court.

Leicestershire Police in a statement on the death of 17-year-old Wild Boar soccer team captain Duangphet ‘Dom’ Phromthep has confirmed that his death last week at an exclusive boarding school in the town of Market Harborough was not suspicious and that a file on it is being prepared for the coroner. Hero’s welcome for Thai rescue team returning from quake-hit Turkey

The Thai search and rescue team that joined the global effort to retrieve earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria returned to a hero’s welcome on Saturday, with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha presenting each member – including the sniffer dogs – with a medal.

The Urban Search and Rescue Team arrived at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport at about 10am on a Turkish Airline flight from Istanbul.

Applause and appreciation was given to its 42 people and two sniffer dogs: Sierra and Sahara. The Golden Retrievers are certified rescue dogs by the International Rescue Dog Organization. Continued …

Chiang Mai’s red ‘Songthaew’ transformation, a new generation of drivers

The red Songthaew minibuses in Chiang Mai have been an iconic form of transport for several decades, for both tourists and locals alike who do not have cars or motorcycles.

The buses, which are, in fact, pickup trucks fitted with two rows of seating facing each other, normally operate on fixed routes. Of late, however, some of them have undergone a transformation, to meet the changing environment and tastes of tourists, thanks to the creative thinking of a new generation of drivers, among them Phuthavat Singkha, a 29-year-old graduate.

Thailand Sets 2027 Target for 100% Reuse of Plastic

The government has emphasized the importance of managing plastic waste, which has had increasingly negative effects on the environment. It is now urging all sides to work toward reducing the use of plastic and eventually meeting the goal of reusing 100% of plastic waste by 2027.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa has implemented policy and continuous assessments to address the issue of plastic waste management, as well as develop long-term solutions for the country. The national aim is to achieve 100% efficiency in plastic recycling by 2027, as outlined in the road map for plastic waste management from 2018-2030.

The private sector in Thailand has been participating in plastic waste management by utilizing upcycling technology to raise the value of plastic waste and transform it into high-value products, such as fabric fibers. In addition, the public has been encouraged to separate waste at the source, and there have been efforts to increase awareness of food safety due to the negative impacts of microplastics. Two Men Dead In A Game Of Russian Roulette

Two of six young men drinking in Ayutthaya early Saturday morning died in a game of Russian roulette, with the same bullet passing from the head of the person who fired the shot to his friend sitting next to him.

At 3.30 a.m., Police Lt. Col. Narathip Suthon, an inspector at Bang Pa-In police station, was alerted of two persons being shot dead at a footpath in front of a shop on Rojana road inbound to the city and rushed there with a team of policemen and rescuers.

Mystery woman found floating dead off Koh Tao

A female body was found floating in the sea 12 nautical miles northwest off the southern Thai island of Koh Tao.

The body was floating among approximately 20 200-liter plastic oil drums and was taken to the temple of Wat Koh Charoen Santitham on Koh Tao. Police there were informed.

There was no ID on the body. It was a woman aged 25-30, quite plump, 160 cms tall, wearing a black and red long sleeve top, brown shorts and black underwear. Continued …

Anutin dashes hopes for e-cigarette legalization

Thai Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has dashed hopes of e-cigarette legalization. Vaping is illegal in Thailand and that is the way things are going to stay.

Anutin said that he had ordered the Department of Disease Control to work with the police and customs to ensure that vaping devices and vaping fluid is not imported into Thailand.

He said he is determined to work with schools and educational organizations to make sure that e-cigarettes are not available among young people, leading to more taking up regular smoking. Continued …

Thailand essential to GWM’s ambitious electric vehicle plans

Chinese sport utility vehicle manufacturer Great Wall Motor (GWM) is determined to expand its electric vehicle (EV) business in ASEAN, with Thailand and Indonesia selected as its top destinations.

The company views Thailand, which is promoting EV production and consumption, as its major EV market, while Indonesia, which is rich in nickel, is suitable as a base for battery manufacturing, said Parker Shi, vice president of GWM.

Chinese not happy with new Thailand tourist fee

Once praised by Chinese travelers, Thailand is bursting its own bubble. On Feb. 14, the Thai cabinet approved the collection of an entry free on foreign visitors, effective starting on June 1. Those coming by air will need to pay 300 baht ($8) for each trip and those entering by land or sea ports must pay 150 baht each.

These fees will be used in part to develop local attractions, as well as provide tourists with insurance coverage during their stay.

The news has been met with dismay in China. On Weibo, the hashtag “Thailand will impose entry fees on foreign tourists” has garnered 130 million views, with many posts complaining about the additional travel costs. As one user @若依诗 wrote, “(Thailand) earned a lot of money and now has started to act rude! I have been to Thailand twice and I have a good impression of it, but this makes me dismiss the idea of going again.” Continued … 

Russian mafia-style ‘gangs’ causing concerns for Phuket businesses

The hospitality industry in Phuket is facing a problem with foreign mafia-style gangs becoming increasingly involved in business on the resort island. Industry executives are concerned that foreigners are exploiting laws to run their own businesses, while also taking up jobs only legal for local people.

Kata Group Resorts founder Pramookpisitt Achariyachai spoke during a recent meeting about tourism issues in the three Andaman provinces of Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga, stating that some foreigners were breaching rules on jobs reserved for Thais.

Businesses currently run by groups of foreigners include taxi services and accommodation, with some foreigners renting villas and condo units abandoned during the Covid-19 pandemic, and then re-renting them out again to their countrymen – and often at highly inflated prices. Thai Health minister says no to 4am pub closing, except in tourist areas

The Ministry of Public Health is against a proposal to allow pubs to stay open until 4am (instead of 2am) as a matter of principle for public welfare and safety, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told a meeting of the board of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) on Sunday.

He also said, however, that the ministry may agree to allow pubs in certain major tourist destinations to operate up to 4am on case-by-case basis, adding that the ministry will try to maintain a balance between social and economic aspects, so no harm is caused.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports wants pubs in tourist destinations, such as Phuket and Pattaya, to stay open until 4am to attract tourists. Continued … 

Rejection of passengers tops list of complaints about Bangkok’s cabbies

The Land Transport Department has received more than 2,000 passenger complaints against taxi drivers in Bangkok, with most of them concerning cabbies’ rejection of passengers, since the new taxi fares came into effect on Jan. 16.

Of the 2,120 complaints, 720 concerned cabbies’ rejection of passengers, 455 concerned impolite behavior toward passengers, 358 were for reckless driving, 237 for not using meters and 221 cases of malfunctioning meters.

The department has already responded to 1,650 complaints and has taken legal action in 479 cases. – Thai PBS

Koh Samui Gears Up For Wellness Tourism With New Hospital

With the opening of a new hospital on Koh Samui over the weekend, Surat Thani authorities announced that it is now ready launch Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan as a wellness destination.

Provincial Gov. Wichawut Jinto joined Dr. Somchai Chansawang, CEO of Wattanapat Hospital Trang Plc, and other senior officials in opening this 53-bed hospital on Koh Samui.

With the new addition, Koh Samui now has five hospitals and altogether 380 beds. Wattanapat Hospital has a team of specialists in various fields, modern medical equipment and a referral system to more advanced hospitals. Continued … 

China-Laos high-speed train brings tourists to Thailand

The number of Chinese tourists visiting Vientiane in Laos, Nong Khai, and Udon Thani in Thailand has increased.

Suganda Punsue, chairman of the Nong Khai Travel Trade Promotion Assn., and executives from the Nong Khai-based travel company Kantana Tour explained that the Lao kip is currently devalued, trading at 1 baht for 500 kip. Previously, it was 1 baht for 250 kip, boosting the travel industry.

Tourists have to exchange into local currency to pay for accommodation and food while traveling in Vientiane or Luang Prabang. Tour operators usually advise tourists to swap travel expenses for local currency at the checkpoint in Laos. They can exchange the money back into Thai baht at a slightly higher rate. Continued … 

Marine Department reassures public that ‘river taxi’ travel is safe

The Marine Department is enforcing safety measures for boat passengers on waterways across the country, its acting director-general Sorapong Paithoonpong assured the public on Saturday.

The department’s officials in Bangkok and its regional offices have been instructed to check the readiness of passenger boats, crew, and safety gear – including life jackets – as well as piers, to ensure maximum safety, Sorapong said.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) joined the Valentine’s Day excitement by releasing an aerial photo of a heart-shaped forest in Chiang Rai. Power bills could start dropping in May

Power bills for both residential and business users could drop after this year’s second fuel tariff (Ft) adjustment in May, Energy Ministry Permanent-secretary Kulit Sombatsiri said on Monday.

Kulit was speaking after a meeting of the National Energy Policy Council (NEPC), which forecast electricity usage will reach a peak in April and start to drop in May.

It also predicted a drop in the price of imported liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the same period, enabling the country to reduce diesel used for electricity generation and substitute it with cheaper LPG. Continued …

Clean energy, biodiversity and bioenergy are now big trends among countries worldwide, said Sinon Vongkusolkit, chief executive officer of clean energy solution provider Banpu NEXT.

He said that signatories to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP) are expressing concerns about clean energy. He added that the Russia-Ukraine war had increased COP participants’ focus on energy security and sustainability.

As rescuers in Turkey continue to find miracle survivors beneath the rubble a week after the country’s worst earthquake in modern history, K9 dogs from Thailand are assisting in the search for victims.

Hundreds of macaque monkeys disappear from temple in Loei

An investigation is under way in Wang Saphung district of Thailand’s north-eastern province of Loei, in an effort to explain the mysterious disappearance of hundreds of macaque monkeys from a forest temple.

Pracha Saenklang, the Wang Saphung district chief officer, ordered an investigation in response to complaints by some visitors to Tham Pha Mak Ho Temple, in Ban Thai Charoen village of Si Songkhram subdistrict, that there used to be about 3,000 macaques in the compound and now there are only about 200.

A villager said that last December some men claiming to be forest officials arrived at the temple, armed with tranquilizer guns, to capture some of the monkeys for relocation elsewhere. They said that there were too many monkeys at the temple and that they have been causing damage to crops and property in the neighborhood. Continued …

Phuket fishing crew rescued after almost one month at sea

A Phuket fishing crew survived for nearly one month at sea after their boat, the Soi Sakul Petch, suffered engine failure a week after it departed from the island in southern Thailand on Jan. 19.

The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) launched a huge search operation after losing contact with the boat, combining marine and air searches, and reached out to authorities in Malaysia and Indonesia in case the boat had entered their territorial waters. Continued …

Foreign film productions rake in billions

A total of 348 foreign film productions used locations in Thailand last year, generating revenue of 6.4 billion baht for the country, according to the Thailand Film Office and Department of Tourism.

Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said that there were 34 foreign film shoots conducted in January this year, which helped create an income of 298 million baht for Thailand for Thailand for that month.

He went on to say that, over the past seven years, 45 films shot here have taken advantage of a cash rebate measure that was introduced by the Thai government, which has brought almost 9 billion baht to Thailand. Continued …

9.7 million tourists, including 150k foreigners, visited Prachuap Khiri Khan in 2022

In 2022, Prachuap Khiri Khan saw a significant increase in tourist numbers, making it a popular destination for both domestic and international travelers.

Data released by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), comparing the number of domestic and international tourists visiting the province between January and December of 2021 and 2022, shows an almost five-fold increase in the number of tourists visiting the province.

In 2022, a total of 9,747,884 tourists visited Prachuap Khiri Khan, the TAT said. Of that totl, 9,597,432 were domestic tourists, with 150,452 tourists from overseas. Continued …

1,900 Chinese Flights Set to Land in Thailand – this week!

Thailand is expecting a large influx of Chinese tourists with the arrival of 1,910 flights from China and an additional 6,318 flight requests for the period from Feb. 13-19, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT).

Suttipong Kongpool, president of the CAAT, told the public that travel in Thailand both domestically and internationally would be bustling from Feb. 13-19, as 6,318 flight slots have already been requested, bringing the total number of flights for February 2023 to 25,256.

Suttipong continued that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most people were unable to travel, but after the Thai government relaxed travel restrictions, travel has increased since the end of last year. Continued …

Thailand is the most-searched destination among Chinese travelers using Airbnb, according to data collected by the accommodation-sharing platform.

Within the country, Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Pattaya top the list of searches by Chinese outbound travelers.

Lost French tourists rescued safely from Phuket’s Nai Thon hills

On Sunday night, two French tourists were lost on the hills above Nai Thon beach in Tambon Sakhu of Thalang district, on the northwest coast of the island, near the airport. They called for help around 10pm and reported that they were lost in a forested area.

A group of foreigners are allegedly using other foreigners stolen credit cards to buy high-priced products in Phuket.

The Patong Police said a group of foreigners are using other foreigners stolen credit cards to buy high-priced products such as gold jewelry worth about 1,200,000 baht and new iPhones.

The scam involves the suspects showing fake passports to vendors, which match the credit card info. The suspects always wear hats and a mask, stating the mask is for Covid protection if asked, hiding their face. Continued …

Patong restaurant owner, Canadian man in fight and bill dispute

A Canadian man who was allegedly attacked by a group of five men in Patong refused to pay for his food and drinks at a restaurant before the incident, according to the restaurant owner, who tells a very different story than the tourist.

The Patong Police said yesterday that a restaurant owner near Patong Beach, identified publicly only as Mrs. Tuenjai, and three of her staff members met with police to give their version of events.

Tuenjai told police that the Canadian man refused to pay his bill, was heavily intoxicated, and shoved her staff. He also allegedly challenged staffers to fight him, which is when the attack that the Canadian man claimed was unprovoked began. Continued …

An elephant camp in Koh Chang, eastern Thailand, is warning tourists not to feed elephants food containing chemicals after an elephant died after eating chemically contaminated bananas.

A few weeks ago, a 20-year-old male elephant at Kaebai Meechai Elephant Camp in Koh Chang, Trat province, fell ill with flatulence and indigestion after eating food brought in by some tourists, according to the elephant’s mahout (trainer) Chaisawan “Nueng” Phisin. Continued …

Hua Hin-Pattaya bus service twice a day

Hua Hin now has twice-daily bus service to Pattaya, starting Feb. 19. The bus leaves Hua Hin at 9am and 3pm, and departs from Pattaya at 8am and 4pm. Tickets are 473 THB.

Tickets can be bought in person at the Hua Hin bus station or online. Buses depart from the Hua Hin bus station and in front of Government Savings Bank, Cha Am.

Driving license renewal? DLT takes walk-in applications from now on

Driving licenses can be renewed at Department of Land Transport offices nationwide from now on without the need to book an appointment.

Similarly, those looking for new licenses and changing the category of their license can walk in for service.

People doing extensions should have evidence of their test results on the online “e-learning” course so that they can process their licenses quickly at the DLT. If you have to do the learning at a test center it can take much longer.

Rules about walk-in applicants were all changed during the pandemic but are no longer necessary. – Thai Rath

Cabinet extends diesel excise cut for four more months

The Cabinet on Tuesday extended the diesel excise relief of 5 baht per liter for four more months, Deputy Finance Minister Santi Promphat said.

Speaking to reporters after the weekly Cabinet meeting, Santi said the Cabinet reached the resolution to extend the cut from January for four more months to help reduce the cost of living and to prevent consumer product prices from rising.

The latest round of diesel excise cut would cost the Excise Department around 40 billion baht in lost revenue, or about 10 billion baht a month. Continued … 

Hua Lamphong Station to Partially Transfer Services

The Department of Rail Transport (DRT) in Thailand has announced that starting from Thursday there will be fewer long-haul trains departing and arriving at Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Station.

According to the DRT, as many as 52 special-express, express and rapid services will depart from Krung Thep Abhiwat Central Terminal, also known as Bang Sue Grand Station. The remaining 62 trips on “public service” trains, including excursion trains and subsidized long-haul services, will continue to depart from Hua Lamphong Station for the time being.

The agency said the reduction in the number of services originating and/or terminating at Hua Lamphong Station will help reduce traffic congestion in and around downtown Bangkok. Continued …

Free shuttle buses to start linking Bangkok’s two main train stations

Free shuttle buses between Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (Bang Sue Grand Station) and Hua Lamphong Station will start running from Thursday to ensure a seamless commute for people in Bangkok.

The shuttle bus service, provided jointly by the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) and the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), aims to make travel easier for train commuters after 52 long-distance trains will start terminating at the new station from Thursday.

Six low-slung NGV buses will run between the two stations daily, with the first bus departing Krung Thep Aphiwat at 4.30am and the last bus at 11pm. Continued …

DCD predicts a fourfold jump in dengue and malaria victims this year

The government’s Disease Control Department (DCD) predicts Thailand will see a huge jump in malaria and dengue fever cases this year.

The director-general of the DCD, Dr. Tares Krassanairawiwong, said the number of malaria and dengue fever sufferers will increase significantly by at least three or four times more than last year.

“There were 10,174 cases last year, three times the cases in 2021, and 45,145 dengue fever cases, an increase of 4.5 times the figure in the same year. Continued …

New rules target deceptive advertising

The Royal Gazette has published an announcement restricting the use of certain phrases in advertisements, as they can mislead customers when purchasing products or services.

Under the rules which go into force today, phrases that can cause confusion or misunderstanding are prohibited. They include the use of superlatives such as “best”, “finest”, and “the one and only” and terms that guarantee satisfaction such as “money back guaranteed”.

The announcement also requires written advertisements to be clearly displayed in Thai, and announcers in radio and television commercials need to speak clearly and not too fast. Continued …

Thailand turns to China in 2023 for GDP growth

Sentiment regarding the economy has been rising since the return of Chinese tourists last January. However, with geopolitical tensions and indeed a trade war between the United States and China, now working with countries such as Russia and Saudi Arabia, as well as elevated energy costs, a dangerous ongoing war in Ukraine and rising interest rates, this choppy world economy presents Thailand with many challenges that must be navigated and tackled in real-time.

China’s economy, despite registering record-low growth in 2022 and being currently in the grips of its largest virus wave, is expected to rebound in the second quarter of 2023. It cannot come too quickly for Thailand, which has suddenly, just in recent months, been left struggling against declining exports and competitiveness driven by a falling U.S. dollar and a dearth of high-spending western tourists this year, with the country’s foreign tourism high season coming to an end in March. Southeast Asia food delivery market slows in risk to Grab

Southeast Asia’s food delivery spending grew at the slowest pace in at least four years in 2022, highlighting the challenges faced by regional internet giants Grab Holdings Ltd and GoTo Group.

Online food delivery spending rose 5% to US$6.3 billion, according to an annual report by Singapore-based consultancy Momentum Works. That was the smallest gain since 2018, when the company started tracking data. Growth in the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam offset declines in Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. Continued …

Corruption scandal in Thai parks agency has far-reaching impacts, activists say

A graft scandal involving the head of Thailand’s national parks department has raised questions about the effects of institutional corruption in the agencies charged with protecting the country’s biodiversity.

Rutchada Suriyakul Na Ayutya, director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), was arrested on Dec. 27 in a joint operation of the anticorruption police, the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) and the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).

Officers found 4.94 million baht (about $150,000) in 16 envelopes and gift boxes in his office, which he’d allegedly extorted from officials from the forest reservation units under his control. Continued …

Sea nomads are taking their struggle over alleged land encroachment to Bangkok. The nomads are part of the Moken minority, a group of semi-nomadic Austronesian group that lives in Thai coastal provinces and inhabits over 800 islands in the Andaman Sea.

Today, a group of Moken people from Koh Lipe rallied in front of the Treasury Department, demanding justice over alleged land encroachment and intimidation.

A coordinator for the Moken of Andaman Network said that a land occupation right issued to an influential figure encroaches on the land of a school on Koh Adang. The coordinator, Wittawat Thepsong, said the encroachment blocks access to beaches and the sea. Continued … 

Thai farmer makes 1 million baht per month selling buffalo semen

A farmer in Kalasin province in northeast Thailand makes 1 million baht every month by selling semen from one special water buffalo named “Big Billion.”

Water buffalo (“kwai”in Thai language) breeders all around the kingdom pay high prices for the semen of Big Billion, a “textbook” Thai water buffalo worth 30 million baht.

Breeders use Big Billion’s seed to artificially inseminate female buffalo in hopes of giving birth to a new generation of beautiful buffalo that will grow up to sell for millions like their father. Continued … 

Search for HTMS Sukhothai’s missing crewmen continues

A search for the five crewmen of the sunken HTMS Sukhothai who remain missing is still continuing, navy commander Adm. Choengchai Chomchoengpaet said on Wednesday.

On Dec. 18, high winds and strong waves caused seawater to flow into HTMS Sukhothai, a corvette of the Rattanakosin class of the Royal Thai Navy operating in the Gulf of Thailand off Bang Saphan district, Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

The flooding caused the engines to fail and the pumps became inoperable. The warship continued to take on water until the warship eventually sank. Continued …

Hotels struggling with staff shortage

Workers remain reluctant to return to the hospitality industry, even though employee revenue from hotel service charges has almost returned to pre-pandemic levels, as Chinese travelers start to return to Thailand.

According to a survey of Phuket and Samui hotel service charges in December, the highest average rate of 61,145 baht was at the Twinpalms Montazure Phuket, while hotels in the top 20 saw average monthly service charges surge to more than 26,000 baht, of which most were five-star properties or managed by international brands.

Suksit Suvunditkul, president of the southern chapter of the Thai Hotels Assn., said revenue from service charges was almost at pre-pandemic levels across all hotel segments, partly because the workforce is 30% lower than before the viral outbreaks. Continued …

In Thailand, tuk-tuk apps spare tourists the hassle of haggling

Ride-hailing apps are making Thailand’s ubiquitous three-wheeled tuk-tuk taxis more accessible to foreign tourists by eliminating the need for cumbersome price negotiations with drivers.

Urban Mobility Tech, which launched its MuvMi ride-hailing service four years ago, offers larger electric tuk-tuks that can carry up to six people, compared with three or four passengers for regular-sized ones. MuvMi has served 3.5 million riders.

Tuk-tuks, which resemble motorized rickshaws, offer better maneuverability than cars on congested streets and are the go-to option to avoid traveling on foot in Thailand’s year-round heat. Continued …

Beauty clinic for foreigners, illicit silicone implant factory raided

Officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) teamed up with police on a raid of several plastic surgery clinics and a manufacturer’s warehouse to confiscate a large number of counterfeit silicone pieces. The joint operation was announced on Monday by the FDA secretary-general and the deputy chief of the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD).

Previous raids had been carried out in December. The latest raid took place last Thursday, Jan. 12. During the raid, it was revealed that fake silicone pieces were used in 1,621 surgeries at the Korawin Clinic’s five branches last year. These surgeries included 1,436 nose jobs, 154 chin implants, and 31 surgeries for both the nose and chin. Continued …

China has returned to normal after the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, Vice Premier Liu He told the World Economic Forum on Tuesday as he invited “international friends” to visit the country.
