Powerful cold winds have been blowing across the east coast of Thailand and high waves are seen in the Gulf of Thailand, likely caused by the northeast monsoon, according to the Thailand Meteorological Department.

Tighter Tax Rules Not Applicable If Double Taxation Agreement Signed

Amid concern among foreigners who have retired in Thailand about the impact of more stringent tax rules on remittance of overseas income as announced on Sept. 15, an expert pointed out this could be avoided if their country has signed a double taxation agreement with Thailand.

14 Thai hospitals report quake damage

Fourteen Thai hospitals — 13 in the north and one in the northeast — have been damaged by the 6.4-magnitude earthquake that occurred in neighboring Myanmar on Friday morning, with services at two hospitals partially suspended, Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said.

Meet the New Swedish Ambassador to Thailand

H.E. Anna Hammargren, was named the new Swedish ambassador to Thailand, on Oct. 23. Born in Solna, a prime settlement and municipality located just north of Stockholm, she spent all her childhood in nearby Sollentuna, also north of the capital.

In Sollentuna, Hammargren went to school and after finishing high school, she took a break from studying and decided – like many young Swedish women do – to spread her wings and go abroad. Economy is in troubled waters, with fears for both exports and foreign tourism

Under-cooked pork alert: Hearing loss fever claims 24

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) has issued a warning against consuming under-cooked or raw pork following an outbreak of Streptococcus suis, otherwise known as hearing loss fever. This outbreak has resulted in approximately 500 infections and 24 fatalities so far.

The announcement was made by Taweechai Wisanuyothin, the director of DDC Regional Office 9 in Nakhon Ratchasima. He revealed that the infection had spread among individuals who had eaten raw or under-cooked pork recently. Furthermore, people preparing the food are also at risk if they handle infected pork with open wounds on their hands. Continued …

A closer look at Thailand’s Bt1-trillion land bridge

The plan to build a “land bridge” from the Gulf of Thailand to the Andaman Sea as a route for international trade was given the green light on Oct. 16. The megaproject will forge a new link between the Pacific and Indian oceans, relieving shipping congestion in the Malacca Straits, currently the main regional trade route for cargo.

A plan to accelerate the development of dual railway tracks connecting five countries – Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, and China – was announced at the 4th iTIC FORUM 2023: Power of Connectivity and Smart Mobility.

The 4500km-long Singapore-Kunming rail line, expected to be completed by 2027, aims to boost the capacity of goods and passenger travel, making it more efficient and faster. Government Must Fix Economy First

A poll conducted by Matichon and Daily News, with over 42,848 votes, reflected the voices of the people from all regions of Thailand. The majority, about 60.2%, indicated that the government should prioritize solving economic and cost-of-living issues, with the highest percentage of male respondents at 63.7%.

The survey, conducted online from Oct. 1-31, reached people of all ages, occupations, education levels and income levels across the country. Thailand set to remain No.2 digital economy in SE Asia

Thailand is expected to remain the second-largest digital economy in Southeast Asia in terms of gross merchandise value (GMV) from 2023 to 2030, according to data in the “eConomy SEA 2023” report.

Long boat racing returns to Kao Tao Nov 17-19

Khao Tao Reservoir will host the 16th edition of “Long Boat Racing for River Masters” between Nov. 17-19. Participants from all over Thailand are expected to compete across four boat categories.

The event will feature traditional Lao vessels, ancient long boats, Naga head long boats from Nan province, and iron long boats from Buriram.

This competition is organized by Hua Hin municipality, the Thai PBS television station and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth).

Long boat races on Pranburi River Nov. 26

A second longboat racing event will take place on Pranburi River on Nov. 26, following the longboat races on the Kao Tao Reservoir a week earlier. Teams from all over Thailand are expected to participate.

The government scheme to hand out 10,000 baht in digital money to Thais is expected to start in April or May next year, in line with the period in which the Fiscal 2024 Act will come into effect, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said on Wednesday.

Thai Air Asia will reduce direct flights from four to twice weekly between Chiang Mai, the gateway city to north Thailand and the beach resort town of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand.
