Of all our stories in the past week, one particular story, indeed basically just a small portion of the overall story, sent shock waves through the retired ex-pat community and the rumor mill was set on fire.

We are referring to the article about Thai police cracking down on foreign criminal motorbike clubs following it being discovered that the prime suspect in the brutal murder and dismemberment of a German businessman in Pattaya was allegedly a prominent member of one of these clubs. Continued …

A moderate southwest monsoon will cause rainfall in most regions of Thailand until Thursday, with isolated heavy showers in the north, the east and the south’s west coast, the Meteorological Department said on Friday.

Public urged to be discreet in water use amid low levels at reservoirs

The Royal Irrigation Department has urged the public to conserve water and is encouraging farmers to primarily rely on rainwater for agricultural purposes to store water for future use.

Praphit Chanma, director-general of the department, said that large and medium-sized reservoirs across the country held a total of 39.201 billion cubic meters of water, or 51% of storage capacity. Currently, 15.26 billion cubic meters of usable water is available, or 29% of total storage capacity. Continued …

Tackling Thailand’s water problems

Thailand has experienced an unusually prolonged period of water crises over recent years. The dry seasons are becoming longer and drier, while the rainy seasons are shorter but with more intense rainfall. This oscillating pattern of droughts and floods has become harder to predict and is causing more serious impacts.

Solving the problem is no easy task. Water management in Thailand is complex and daunting because there are many factors involved, some of which conflict with one another — water shortage caused by growing water demand in various sectors, serious floods, rapid urbanization, land use change, as well as outdated urban water systems and irrigation infrastructure. As climate change intensifies, these pressures and problems are harder to deal with. Continued …

Pheu Thai says time not right for coalition with coup-linked parties

The time is not right for Pheu Thai to form a new coalition government with two political parties linked to leaders of the post-coup junta, party deputy leader Phumtham Wechayachai said on Friday.

He was reacting to questions from the media about the possibility of Pheu Thai including Palang Pracharath and United Thai Nation in the new alliance it is forming after pulling out of the earlier coalition with Move Forward Party. Continued …

This divorce could get messy

The split between the two largest parties, Pheu Thai and the Move Forward Party (MFP), may prove irreconcilable, with the MFP possibly on its way to getting a taste of its own medicine, according to a political expert.

While some pilloried Pheu Thai for dumping the MFP in favor of securing a coalition deal with parties in the previous government, others reckoned their political marriage was never meant to be from the outset. Continued …

Pita slams ‘backward democracy’ at university

How the Thai economy is affected by delay in forming new government

If the political situation remains stable, the Thai economy is expected to continue moving forward for the remaining part of this year. The economy has shown signs of improvement moving into the second half of the year, and GDP growth is projected to be at least 3% for the whole year.

On the flip side, prolonged political uncertainty may affect the economy and international confidence next year. As the political temperature rises while we await the formation of a new government following May’s election, many are concerned that the transition period could hit the economy and international confidence, especially if there are prolonged uncertainties. Continued …

I went rafting on Thailand’s own ‘Little Amazon’

Jom is a man of few words. Our grasp of each other’s native language – my English, his Thai – is also minimal, meaning we don’t have a lot to say to each other. Then there are the betel nut leaves balled up inside his cheek. Since he’s continually chewing on them, communication between us is doubly hard.

When Jom speaks, which is rare, it tends to be monosyllabic, and grunt-like. “Head,” he’ll say, imploring us to duck when an overhanging branch threatens to knock our melons off. Or “Oh!” when our bamboo raft brushes against a granite boulder unexpectedly. Continued …

He believes he can identify such things better than other people, because he’s not distracted by pain. He doesn’t feel any.

Yes, he can sense the difference between hot and cold. His foot tingles when he sits on it too long. And he knows his knees are arthritic, because he can see their swelling and finds they’re not as mobile as they used to be. Continued …

Companies hit with 20% power hike

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has decided to maintain the power tariff at 4.72 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), keeping electricity bills for households unchanged for the first four months next year, but it plans to increase the tariff imposed on businesses.

Although the decision will help people deal with high living costs, Isares Rattanadilok Na Phuket, vice-chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries, said on Thursday he was “very disappointed” with the announcement because entrepreneurs are also struggling to deal with energy prices.

The ERC will increase the power tariff for the non-household sector by 20.5% to 5.69 baht per unit, up from 4.72 baht per unit. Continued …

The Commerce Ministry has refuted the United States’ preliminary determination that solar panels imported from Thailand are evading U.S. anti-dumping measures.

U.S. authorities published a determination on Dec. 8 that solar cells and modules imported from manufacturers in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia are using parts from China. This shows an intention to evade U.S. anti-dumping and countervailing duty measures against China, the determination said.

The country is likely to see 3.6% economic growth in 2023 thanks to the performance of the tourism sector, despite the nation’s export growth slowing down, according to University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC).

The president of the UTCC and adviser to the university’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting, Thanavath Phonvichai, said the number of tourists visiting Thailand is expected to increase from 11 million this year to 22 million people in 2023, while the nation’s exports are slowing down due to a decline in trade partners’ purchasing power.

The 9 Best Spas in Bangkok

Although celebrated retreats are nothing new in the tropical island regions of Thailand, the best spas in Bangkok boast a particularly unique approach, setting the city apart from many other destinations around the world.

The bustling Southeast Asian metropolis has long been synonymous with a wild nightlife scene, Michelin-starred street food, and ancient temples — and its intrepid visitors have come to the city hungry for an unforgettable adventure. But in recent years, there’s been an appetite for a new brand of tourism taking over the Thai capital: wellness.

This refreshing energy is very much due to the destination’s focus on the marriage of Thai tradition — which, for centuries, has taken a holistic approach to health —with modern science and medicine. From classic treatments like Tok Sen massage, an ancient Thai technique that uses a special wooden hammer to tap along the body’s energy line, and Harmonized Qi rituals to a new medical wellness retreat offering up the latest longevity innovations (think: cryotherapy, DNA testing, whole-body light therapy, and hyperbaric chambers), there are more than a trip’s worth of wellness experiences to be had.
