Thailand Yet to Finalize Policy on Taxing Expats’ Overseas Income

As the deadline for 2024 personal income tax registration approaches, confusion remains about Thailand’s stance on taxing overseas remittances for expats. Some say international credit card use and transfers could be taxed, yet others find the situation less clear-cut.

(For expert opinion on this tax, go HERE.)

There’s debate around whether anyone in Thailand for over 180 days last year must file a return, but this depends on if they transferred “assessable” income. Continued …

Rama II Road sees over 2,500 construction accidents in seven years

Rama II Road, often called “The Road with Never-Ending Construction”, has seen frequent accidents throughout its decades-long construction, attributed to a 50-year timeline of projects. As a vital route to southern Thailand, it remains the site of numerous large-scale projects aimed at reducing severe traffic congestion.

The incident in which a concrete beam structure collapsed on to the construction site of Dao Khanong Expressway Bridge on the early morning of Saturday was the latest addition to more than 2,500 construction-related accidents reported by the Department of Highways since 2019. Continued …

Expressway collapse leads to Bangkok-south traffic woes

Transport authorities are recommending detours to motorists, as the collapse of a new expressway on Saturday seriously damaged an existing Bangkok-Thon Buri expressway ramp which connects to Rama II Road, a main southbound highway, and its complete reopening will take about a month.

Surachet Laophulsuk, governor of the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT), said near the collapse site yesterday that police expected very heavy traffic congestion in the area today, as the collapse blocked both inbound and outbound traffic on the Chalerm Maha Nakhon expressway ramp near the Dao Khanong toll plaza. Bangkok BTS Disturbance Sparks Debate Over Tourism Conduct

A recent incident involving tourists on Bangkok’s BTS Skytrain has stirred up a debate among expats and locals. The commotion, allegedly caused by a group of boisterous foreign visitors, has spotlighted varying opinions on tourist behavior and the challenges linked to Thailand’s growing visitor numbers.

The BTS incident, which reportedly involved loud and seemingly disrespectful behavior, has left many commuters disgruntled. An annoyed resident said, “Foreigners are always so loud on public transport. They need to respect others around them.” This sentiment was echoed by others who felt the tourists’ antics disrupted the peace and quiet normally associated with the BTS. Continued …

Grim Employment Prospects Loom Over Thailand

The Thai economy is navigating turbulent waters, as the nation’s employment landscape reveals ominous signs of distress. Recent coverage from the Federation of Thai SMEs highlights a concerning drop in insured workers under Section 33 of the Social Security Act, affecting over 10 million people and signaling troubling times for job seekers.

The woes don’t stop there. Sangchai Theerakulvanich, president of the federation, points to a surge in business closures and stagnation, reflected in negative financial statements submitted to the Revenue Department. This, he argues, showcases companies’ battles to remain afloat amid escalating production costs and global economic strains. Continued …

World’s biggest stock rout deepens as Thai market rescue falters

An ambitious campaign to revive Thailand’s battered stock market is falling flat, as entrenched pessimism about the economy accelerates a foreign funds exodus.

Seven months after $4.5 billion was newly injected into the Vayupak Fund, analysts have been left perplexed by how little it’s helped the benchmark SET Index. The stock gauge has tumbled more than 16% this year, making it the world’s worst performer among 92 indexes tracked by Bloomberg. Over the past 12 months, foreigners pulled out $4.2 billion, the most across Southeast Asia. Continued …

According to a recent report by C9 Hotelworks, international arrivals at Phuket International Airport surged by 23% in 2024, reaching 8.65 million visitors. Former Minister Reveals Alleged Phuket Police Extortion of Tourists

Former finance minister Sommai Phasee has made explosive claims about corrupt police practices in Phuket, suggesting tourists are being extorted for bribes. This hidden lake near Chiang Mai offers royal luxury for $3

In Thailand’s northern hills lies a haven so serene that locals escape here every weekend, yet most international travelers never discover it. Huay Tung Tao Lake sits just 12 minutes from Chiang Mai’s bustling Old City, but feels worlds away from the tourist-packed temples and night markets.

Created in 1983 under King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s vision to combat water scarcity, this reservoir has transformed into something extraordinary. What began as practical infrastructure now serves as Chiang Mai’s outdoor living room – a place where time slows and the majestic Doi Pui mountain creates a backdrop worthy of a film set. Thailand travel without the tourists

The new season of The White Lotus is upon us, or rather it’s upon Thailand. Hundreds of thousands of tourists are expected to descend on the paradisiacal setting of Koh Samui, while cashed-up guests at the island’s Four Seasons are already requesting upgrades to the $10,000-a-night villas featured in the show.

For a country that already struggles with overtourism, Thailand is bracing for impact. Local environmentalists are feeling uneasy and quite rightly, too – the Thai government closed Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi for four years in 2018 after boat anchors and propellers, sunscreen contaminants, and sewage destroyed the corals and marine life off the white-sand bay after it went mainstream in the 1999 movie The Beach. Thailand is going green in a big way, with Phuket at the forefront of a bold push to revolutionize sustainable tourism. Minister Chalermchai Sri-on stressed that while Thailand’s booming tourism industry generated a staggering 1.67 trillion baht last year, the sector also poses serious environmental challenges. With Phuket alone emitting 3.16 million tons of greenhouse gases, the government is racing to transform the industry into a low-carbon, climate-friendly sector. Continued …

Upgrade of Hua Hin Airport to continue next year

Transport Deputy Minister Manaporn Charoensri said on Saturday the ministry had ordered the Department of Airports, the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, and other agencies to develop Hua Hin’s operations, including acquiring a certificate to operate it as an international airport.

Danai Ruangsorn, director-general of the Department of Airports (DoA), said the development plan for Hua Hin Airport consists of two major projects. The first, expanding the runway, has been completed. The second, work on related infrastructure aspects of the airport, such as the runway tunnel over the highway, still need 300 billion baht and budget approval. Continued …

“It will be the end of Hua Hin as a laid back beach town resort. Tourist operators from China, India and Russia will promote Hua Hin as a place to have a vacation.”

“Heard this rubbish for years and they cannot even get a single service yet from Singapore or KL . And, of course, if you noticed the traffic congestion already in peak season, and the new train station, the road system will also need upgrades. Have they planned for that?”

“Economically it would be good for Hua Hin, but it would be sad to see it become another Pattaya or Phuket.”

“I have been hearing this every year for the past 10 years, or more. Upgrading the airport without the surrounding areas will be a disaster. The center is already gridlocked at weekends. It will also signal the death knell for H.H. as a relaxing holiday town, another one bites the dust in the relentless grab for money and profits. Sadly, it will join the ranks of Pattaya, Phuket, Samui, as a place to avoid.”

“I will only believe it when I see it happen. Air Asia has been interested in using Hua Hin as a regional hub for years now, and all they have ever gotten is Neanderthal-style foot dragging from the officials here. Hua Hin Airport is one of the least utilized airports in Thailand, possibly even in the world. Shame on these guys. They can do so much better. Thailand desperately needs more regional airports, especially within a few hours of Bangkok. Anything to ease congestion, and save souls from the nightmare of getting in and out of Bangkok has to be a good thing for the nation and it’s people.”

“Cha Am Beach is invaded every weekend with people from BK. You can’t get near it on the weekends. Hua Hin is filling up with people from BK, plus Chinese tour buses are all over the place at present, The airport might make it worse.”

“I hope it never happens. And it won’t happen if the airlines don’t see a profit. Too small and not enough interest dooms this idea yet again. Good.”

“So, where will they fly to and from internationally? Apparently, they couldn’t even find enough passengers for the domestic routes they’ve tried over the years.”

The WHO is monitoring universal health coverage by tracking two main indicators worldwide: the coverage of essential health services (SDG 3.8.1) and the lack of financial protection (SDG 3.8.2), which is defined as the “proportion of a country’s population with large household expenditures on health relative to their total household expenditure.” Continued …

Thailand Targets Tougher Alcohol Laws to Align with Global Norms

Thailand’s government is pushing forward with the Alcoholic Beverage Control Bill, which is slated for parliamentary submission next month as part of its effort to enhance alcohol regulation. Anticipated to be deliberated in January, the draft law focuses on the regulation of alcohol sales hours, potentially altering the current 2–5 pm ban to match global norms.

However, around-the-clock sales will remain prohibited. Crucially, the bill proposes the establishment of provincial committees to enforce age restrictions robustly, ensuring minors have no access to alcohol. Continued …

Thailand awaits court verdict that may topple PM Srettha

A Thai court will this week decide if the Southeast Asian nation will continue business as usual or be tipped into a renewed period of political uncertainty, when it assesses whether tycoon Srettha Thavisin should continue as prime minister.

The Constitutional Court will rule on whether Srettha violated “ethical standards” by appointing to Cabinet former lawyer Pichit Chuenban, who was jailed for contempt of court following a bribery attempt. The petition against Srettha was brought originally by a group of 40 senators, who claimed the appointment was grounds for his disqualification under the charter. Continued …

Threat of US recession and geopolitical risks could derail Thai economic recovery

Market expectations were jolted earlier this month when the U.S. job market created only 114,000 openings in July, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.3%, the highest since October 2021.

The disappointing figures led to market sell-offs around the world, with key U.S. stock market indices — the Nasdaq Composite, the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average — dropping sharply by 2.43%, 1.84% and 1.51%, respectively, on Aug. 2. (Editor note: Those losses were short-term and more than recovered since then.) Continued …

Tax gain from casino legalization ‘not worth it’

Several parties have criticized the government’s proposed bill to allow casinos to operate legally within entertainment complexes in the country, saying that tax revenue gained from casinos would not be worth the ensuing social problems.

A source from the Finance Ministry said this week that the draft of the Entertainment Complex Act is in the final stretch and set to undergo a public hearing this month. The draft stipulates that entertainment complex operators must register as a company in Thailand with registered capital of at least 10 billion baht. They must apply for a license, which is valid for 30 years, and will be reviewed every five years. Continued …

Chance discovery reveals the threat posed by unlicensed Chinese factories

A random Highway Patrol police stop on Sunday led to the discovery of two unlicensed Chinese-owned factories. The facilities in Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon were engaged in aluminium smelting and recycling, activities unknown to Thai authorities. In addition, the discovery comes months after large quantities of toxic cadmium waste were found across provinces adjacent to Bangkok and the Eastern region.

The situation highlights government inertia in dealing with broad concerns raised by environmentalists that Thailand, since 2017 and a law change in China, is being used as a dumping ground for toxic industrial activities that were banned that year in the communist country. Continued …

Studying the elephant-sized issues of living with elephants

Almost every night, Tyler Nuckols can hear fireworks and shouting — not celebrating a holiday or marking an occasion, but trying to drive elephants back into the forest. In Ruam Thai, where Nuckols is conducting socio-ecological fieldwork as he pursues a PhD in the University of Colorado Boulder, elephants emerge from the trees of Kui Buri National Park almost every night in search of pineapple.

Over many years, elephants have learned that an easy and accessible meal is in farmers’ fields — to the detriment of those fields and farmers’ livelihoods. As farmers lose their source of income and means of supporting their families, elephants risk injury or worse, as farmers — also risking injury or worse — try to deter them. Continued …

Hua Hin Airport to Become International Hub by 2025

In an ambitious stride to elevate Thailand’s aviation clout, Hua Hin Airport in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province is set for a dramatic overhaul. The newly dubbed Phetch-Hua Hin International Airport aims for completion by late 2025.

Golfing in Hua Hin

Few golf course deals can equal the one hatched on the Royal Hua Hin course in 1932. In the middle of a game, Siam’s King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) learned that a powerful alliance of bureaucrats and soldiers in Bangkok were demanding he replace his country’s 700-year old absolute monarchy with a constitutional one. The king reportedly said to his golfing partners “I told you so” and played on. And thus began Siam- Thailand’s sometimes-rocky journey toward democracy.

Golf is still the hottest game in town, with Hua Hin regularly hosting major local and Asian tournaments. It all began when Thailand’s first golf course, Royal Hua Hin, opened here in the 1920s (legend has it that the caddies first had to chase tigers off the fairways). Today, there are nine quality courses along the stretch of the Gulf of Thailand between Cha Am, 20km to the north, and Hua Hin, making this virtually the Gulf of Golf. Continued …

Prasert Taedulyasatit, president of the Thai Condominium Assn., said yesterday that the Myanmar government’s strict control over condominium purchases in Thailand has affected sales. Currently, Myanmar nationals are the second largest group of buyers after Chinese nationals.

It is expected that this restriction will further worsen the real estate market in the second quarter and continue the negative trend from the first quarter. Nevertheless, customers from Myanmar still make up a small proportion compared to Chinese buyers, who remain the largest customer group. Continued …

I moved to Thailand, and can’t picture ever returning home to Scotland

A friend recently said that living in Southeast Asia was akin to winning one of Willy Wonka’s golden tickets. And it’s impossible to dismiss a long list of advantages that include the cuisine, cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, low cost of living, and generally friendly, laid-back hosts.

There are trade-offs, including terrible air quality, horrendous traffic congestion, and temperatures that veer toward the inhumane. But on the plus side, I get sun-kissed winters, palm-fringed beaches, and a less stringently regulated existence. Continued …

Can AI alleviate the burden for Thailand’s overworked doctors?

Thailand’s universal free healthcare system may be the envy of many in the Asia-Pacific region, but it is overworking staff and doctors, and forcing medical workers to leave the industry as entrepreneurs turn to technology for solutions to ease the caseload burden.

With little triaging of illnesses or minimal health education for the public, hospitals and clinics are swamped with patients with minor illnesses who severely tax an under-resourced public medical system, according to the entrepreneurs. Continued …

An overview of Thailand’s real estate industry

Property sector likely to see uptick in Q2 or Q3

Thailand’s real-estate sector continued to languish during the first quarter of this year and expectations are that the second quarter is unlikely to see any major improvements amid continued tightening of the loan-to-value ratio by the Bank of Thailand and the more than 50% rejection rate of mortgage loans by the commercial banks in the country.

ThepProperty sector, which Patchara Klinchuanchun sector analyst at Krungsri Research estimates accounted for about 10% of Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2022, is a major driver for economic growth of the country, but subdued sentiments on the state of the economy going forward, coupled with over cautious banks, has all led to a slowdown in the economic activities in the sector.
