Police seized 23 luxury cars valued at 220 million baht from the network associated with the “Big Boss of The Icon.” The most significant seizure belonged to Boss Paul, totaling 61 million baht. Thai authorities believe there are more assets to uncover as the investigation continues, with suspects allegedly converting cash into digital currency to avoid detection.

Yesterday, police raided The Icon Group’s network, seizing assets from 18 suspects believed to have been obtained through illicit activities. After a court ordered the detention of 18 The iCon Group executives yesterday (Oct. 17) with 17 of them taken straight to prison, while the big boss, Woratphon Waratvorakul, or Boss Paul, was still being questioned by police, it was alleged that more than US247 million, or over 8 billion baht, was transferred out the country by the company’s programmer just an hour before he was rounded up.

Ekkapop Luengprasert, an adviser to the Interior minister said that, “An unusual money trail – over US$247,911,936, worth more than 8,223 million baht, was transferred out just an hour before ‘Coach Lab’ of The iCon was arrested.” Continued …

Court denies bail for 17 iCon executives

Seventeen executives and core members of the iCon Group were ordered detained last night, after the Criminal Court rejected the bail applications for three of them on the grounds that they may try to interfere with evidence or flee, and because their alleged offenses are serious and have widespread impacts.

Two Thai women were arrested for creating fake Facebook pages to scam tourists out of deposits for luxury resort bookings in Pattaya. The suspects were arrested by Tourist Police at their residences in Chonburi and Samut Prakan provinces. Both face charges of “fraud by entering false information into a computer system”.

Water problems escalate in Hua Hin

Expat News is seeing online reports of widespread water rationing in Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. The Pran Buri Dam, which supplies 90% of Hua Hin’s water supply, is reportedly at 25% of capacity, while the city seeks more water from the Phetchaburi dam.

There are reports of launderettes closing for lack of water, restaurants and other businesses closing or rationing water. Hotels and other large businesses are using water trucks to replenish their tanks.

With the temperatures expected to increase over the next two weeks, the water shortage problem will not go away until the rainy season arrives.

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a health warning today as Thailand grapples with a heatwave, as temperatures soar to extreme highs of up to 43 degrees Celsius in the north, northeast, and central regions, compounded by moderate to high levels of dust accumulation and smoke haze.

Smog levels continue to rise

Smog levels continued to rise this morning, with PM2.5 dust readings exceeding 200 micrograms per cubic meter of air in three northern provinces, including Chiang Mai.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 9am that 20 provinces recorded red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5). Diesel at Shell stations rises to 30.49 baht per liter

Shell Thailand raised its retail price for diesel to 30.49 baht per liter as soon as the government announced it was lifting the 30-baht price ceiling on Tuesday. The government decided to lift the price ceiling on diesel after the Oil Fuel Fund recorded a deficit of 100 billion baht from the subsidy.

The 30-baht price cap was implemented last September in a bid to ease people’s financial burden and was extended every three months until it expired on March 31. Continued …

Cabinet endorses 400-baht daily wage to hotel workers in 10 provinces

Employment up in Q4 on increased tourism

Thailand’s employment rose 1.7% in the final quarter of 2023 from a year earlier, helped by the tourism sector, after a 1.3% year-on-year increase in the previous quarter, the state planning agency said today.

Jobs in the hotel and restaurant sector rose 8% annually in the final quarter of 2023, as the number of tourists increased, the National Economic and Social Development Council said. Continued …

Electricity and fuel prices are expected to increase next year

Consumers are advised to brace for increases in the prices of electricity and fuel next year, even though the government will try its best to minimize the rises.

After the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) proposed an increase in the price of electricity, from 3.99 baht to 4.68 baht/unit for January-April, the Ministry of Energy is to hold consultations with the ERC on how to trim the fuel tariff (FT), averaging 89.55 satang/unit, to limit the proposed increase, which is considered by the government to be too large. PM rejects electricity tariff hike proposal

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin rejected the electricity tariff hike approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Saturday, explaining that he was worried the increase would be too burdensome for consumers. Most of the general public are currently facing rising cost of living. Srettha added that the increase could hurt the government’s popularity in the next general election.

The ERC earlier approved a 12.5% increase in the electricity tariff for residential consumers, from 4.20 baht to 4.68 baht per unit. Continued …

Pork prices sizzle down, fueling October’s inflation cool-off

A decline in pork prices significantly contributed to a reduction in the inflation rate in October, an anonymous figure within the Finance Ministry has revealed. Informal debtors owing Bt1.5 billion flood govt mediation service

Over 37,000 people owing a combined 1.5 billion baht applied for the government’s informal-debt resolution program in its first two days, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

Permanent Secretary Suttipong Juljarern revealed that 37,579 people had registered for debt mediation as of Saturday at 4pm. Of these, 36,338 registered online, while 1,241 visited Debt Relief Assistance Centers set up around the country. No alcohol sales on Sunday

The sale of alcohol will be banned on Sunday to observe the end of Buddhist Lent. The ban begins at midnight Saturday and ends midnight Sunday. Alcohol sales are not allowed at restaurants, bars, pubs, hotels, convenience stores, and supermarkets, although you can still buy at duty-free shops in airports. Violators can be fined up to 10,000 baht, a maximum of six months in jail, or both.

To celebrate their 7th anniversary, the Hua Hin Ladies (HHL) are seeking donations of rice on Thursday, Oct. 26, with the donations given to Jungle Aid.

Donations should be dropped off at Cheers Restaurant & Bar any time from 9am until closing. Those attending the HHL party that day can bring donations the evening of Oct. 26.

Canned fish, soap, and toothbrushes and toothpaste are also welcomed. Last year, the event collected 715 kg of rice, 220 cans of fish, and 150 bars of soap.

Cost of living concerns mount

Late king, Rama IX, remembered in Hua Hin

Over a thousand people yesterday attended ceremonies honoring the late H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Participants carried the royal cypher of His Majesty from Phon Kingphet Public Park to Wang Klai Kangwon. Hua Hin’s blue swimming crab bank initiative honored

Hua Hin has been listed in the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories for 2023 for the “blue swimming crab bank” initiative in Khao Takiab. The initiative is organized by the local fishing community of Khao Takiab and focuses on the conservation of the blue swimming crab population.

Under the initiative, any gravied female crabs caught by the local fishing fleet are released back into the sea after they are placed in a nurturing condition to spawn. From October 2018 to May 2023, the crab bank initiative released over 150 million crab larvae into the sea, representing an economic value exceeding 1,000 million THB (approximately 28.5 million USD).

The crabs are released back into the sea every morning from 9am on the beach next to Amazon Coffee in Khao Takiab,. Anyone can take part in the releasing of the crabs.

Tropical depression triggers heavy rain warnings for 47 Thai provinces

Today, 47 provinces of Thailand, including Bangkok, brace for heavy rainfall due to a tropical depression covering the Gulf of Thailand.

The public has been warned to be cautious of flash floods and forest runoff, especially in hillside areas and low-lying regions. The sea waves are expected to reach a height of two meters in areas affected by thunderstorms. Continued …

What the Srettha government has done during its first month in office

After a month in office, the Pheu Thai-led coalition government has launched a slew of policies with many more to come, according to Prommin Lertsuridej, the head of Pheu Thai Party’s economic affairs committee and secretary-general of the prime minister’s office.

Prommin acknowledged that though the government had officially announced its policies, some were introduced a bit hastily, including the initiatives to reduce energy prices, support farmers, boost tourism, and implement soft power. Australia interested in investment in Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor

Australia is interested in investing in infrastructure development projects, water resources in particular, in Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), according to Thailand’s trade representative Nalinee Taveesin.

Australia is Thailand’s 8th largest trading partner, with bilateral trade last year estimated at about US$18.38 billion, with a tendency to increase in line with Australia’s economic strategy in Southeast Asia over the next decade and longer, as announced by the Australian prime minister in September, with the government having initially set aside US$95.4 million across four years to fund the strategy. Mama noodle maker sets out expansion plans

Thai President Foods, the manufacturer of Mama instant noodles, plans to invest more than 2 billion baht over a three-year period to expand its production capacity in response to anticipated future growth, both domestically and abroad.

The VIP bus service from Hua Hin to Suvarnabhumi Airport has a new Cha Am boarding location in front of Government Savings Bank.

Hua Hin-Pattaya bus service twice a day

Hua Hin now has once-daily bus service to Pattaya, leaving Hua Hin at 9am and departing from Pattaya at 8am. Tickets are 473 THB.

Tickets can be bought in person at the Hua Hin bus station or online. Buses depart from the Hua Hin bus station and in front of Government Savings Bank, Cha Am.. Tickets 

November Hua Hin-Chaing Mai flight schedule

Hua Hin-Chiang Mai flights reduced to two per week

Thai Air Asia will reduce direct flights from four to twice weekly between Chiang Mai, the gateway city to north Thailand and the beach resort town of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand.

From Chiang Mai, the new schedule switches to two weekly flights (Friday and Sunday), starting Oct. 30. The one-way is around USD78.40 (THB2,846), including fees and tax. Continued …
