The annual Red Cross fair is drawing to a close tonight after more than a week of festivities and fundraising efforts. The “26th Red Cross and Hua Hin District Goods Fair,” which began on Feb. 24, has been held at the 25-rai event space on Soi Hua Hin 102, adjacent to the Bluport Hua Hin.

Park officials wage uphill battle to control forest fires in Chiang Mai

1% fee to be charged on credit-card transactions abroad in baht from May 1

Visa and Mastercard credit card holders will have to pay a fee of 1% for transactions and ATM withdrawals made overseas in baht. The fee is being levied for currency conversion.

500 Phuket Locals Rally At Swiss Expat’s Villa to Reclaim Alleged ‘Private Beach’

Yesterday, over 500 local residents gathered at Ya Mu Beach in Phuket to demonstrate against a Swiss national who allegedly kicked a female doctor. The initial assault, which occurred on Feb. 24, sparked outrage and criticism from Thai citizens after the doctor reported being kicked by near the man’s rented beachfront villa in the Thalang area.

Foreign Man Throws Glass At Thai Woman In Dog Cafe

Hot on the heels of a Swiss businessman and his wife assaulting and verbally abusing a Thai female doctor who was sitting on the steps leading from their villa to Cape Yamu beach in Phuket, another foreign man threw a glass at a Thai woman in a Pattaya dog cafe and then ran away.

Transport Co warns against taxi surcharge at bus terminus

Employment up in Q4 on increased tourism

Thailand’s employment rose 1.7% in the final quarter of 2023 from a year earlier, helped by the tourism sector, after a 1.3% year-on-year increase in the previous quarter, the state planning agency said today.

Electricity and fuel prices are expected to increase next year

Consumers are advised to brace for increases in the prices of electricity and fuel next year, even though the government will try its best to minimize the rises.

After the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) proposed an increase in the price of electricity, from 3.99 baht to 4.68 baht/unit for January-April, the Ministry of Energy is to hold consultations with the ERC on how to trim the fuel tariff (FT), averaging 89.55 satang/unit, to limit the proposed increase, which is considered by the government to be too large. PM rejects electricity tariff hike proposal

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin rejected the electricity tariff hike approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Saturday, explaining that he was worried the increase would be too burdensome for consumers. Most of the general public are currently facing rising cost of living. Srettha added that the increase could hurt the government’s popularity in the next general election.

The ERC earlier approved a 12.5% increase in the electricity tariff for residential consumers, from 4.20 baht to 4.68 baht per unit. Continued …

Pork prices sizzle down, fueling October’s inflation cool-off

Informal debtors owing Bt1.5 billion flood govt mediation service

Over 37,000 people owing a combined 1.5 billion baht applied for the government’s informal-debt resolution program in its first two days, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

Permanent Secretary Suttipong Juljarern revealed that 37,579 people had registered for debt mediation as of Saturday at 4pm. Of these, 36,338 registered online, while 1,241 visited Debt Relief Assistance Centers set up around the country. No alcohol sales on Sunday

The sale of alcohol will be banned on Sunday to observe the end of Buddhist Lent. The ban begins at midnight Saturday and ends midnight Sunday. Alcohol sales are not allowed at restaurants, bars, pubs, hotels, convenience stores, and supermarkets, although you can still buy at duty-free shops in airports. Violators can be fined up to 10,000 baht, a maximum of six months in jail, or both.

Legal casinos and gambling in Thailand being weighed carefully

Thailand’s leaders are considering plans put forward last year for legalizing gambling and casinos in the Kingdom. In September, Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin came out in favor of the move and has promised to bring the matter to cabinet.

By and large, public opinion is hostile to the prospect, as are many experts, given the history of gambling in the country and the social ills it creates. Thai death toll in Israel conflict reaches 33, repatriation efforts underway

Opposition to the government’s digital wallet scheme growing

The government’s controversial digital wallet scheme is facing increasing opposition, with opponents seeking intervention from the Central Administrative Court, the Election Commission, the Office of Auditor-General and the Ombudsman to put the scheme on hold.

Thai Pakdee Party leader Warong Dechgitvigrom filed a complaint with the Auditor-General’s office Wednesday, asking for a probe into the digital wallet scheme before submitting its findings to the Administrative Court to seek the scheme’s suspension. Continued …

Thailand’s latest visa policy reflects much wider economic hopes

BMW unit to settle EV plant plan by year-end

BMW Group Thailand will finalize its plan to build an electric vehicle (EV) factory in Thailand within this year, as the Munich-based premium car manufacturer joins other automakers worldwide in seeking to take advantage of opportunities in the EV industry, which is being strongly backed by the government.

Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) has set a new investment target of 500 billion baht (US$13.7 billion) over the next five years.

The government’s new Commerce minister pledged to address all long-standing obstacles within 99 days to better attract foreign investment into the EEC. This includes finalizing a key high-speed railway project that connects the EEC to three major airports: Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, and U-tapao. Late king, Rama IX, remembered in Hua Hin

Over a thousand people yesterday attended ceremonies honoring the late H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Hua Hin’s blue swimming crab bank initiative honored

Hua Hin has been listed in the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories for 2023 for the “blue swimming crab bank” initiative in Khao Takiab. The initiative is organized by the local fishing community of Khao Takiab and focuses on the conservation of the blue swimming crab population.

Under the initiative, any gravied female crabs caught by the local fishing fleet are released back into the sea after they are placed in a nurturing condition to spawn. From October 2018 to May 2023, the crab bank initiative released over 150 million crab larvae into the sea, representing an economic value exceeding 1,000 million THB (approximately 28.5 million USD).

The crabs are released back into the sea every morning from 9am on the beach next to Amazon Coffee in Khao Takiab,. Anyone can take part in the releasing of the crabs.

Work in progress viewable at Cha Am’s Mrigadayavan Palace

The Mrigadayavan Palace is opening its doors this weekend. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024.

Today, the palace is open from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. There is a 90-baht admission fee for adults. Lower fees are available for students, while young children and elderly can visit for a voluntary donation.

Two Thai elephants born through artificial insemination

Among the more than 4,000 elephants in Thailand, two hold a special honor: both were born using artificial insemination in a bid to protect the species and maintain the country’s biodiversity.

According to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation as of March 9 this year, between 4,013 and 4,422 elephants lived in 91 national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and non-hunting areas across Thailand. Two wild elephants electrocuted in Surat Thani

A woman has been charged with violating the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act after two wild elephants were electrocuted by a live wire stretched around her durian plantation to protect her fruit trees.

Second phase of renewable energy scheme promotes biomass crops

Authorities are preparing for the second phase of the “Energy for All” renewable scheme, aiming to encourage farmers to grow “energy crops” to serve power plants that are expected to have electricity generation capacity of 200 megawatts.

Government to trial 4 am closing for Thailand’s nightlife venues

The Thai government is working to identify pilot locations for a trial of late-night closing for the country’s nightlife. Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul says his office is liaising with related parties to find locations where entertainment venues would be allowed to remain open until 4 am.

Ministry allots Bt600 million for tourism promotions

The Tourism and Sports Ministry plans to use 600 million baht from its central budget to promote the tourism industry during the high season, as fiscal 2024 budget disbursement is expected to be delayed until April next year.

American man arrested in Chiang Mai after two Dutch tourists stabbed

Chiang Mai police arrested an American man early Thursday for allegedly stabbing a Dutch father and his son on a road in Chiang Mai’s Muang district on Wednesday.

Thai baht plummets against the US$

The Thai baht has plummeted to its lowest level against the USD since November last year, driven by concerns of “stagflation in countries that heavily rely on energy imports. That includes Thailand.

The baht experienced its second consecutive day of declines against the USD, falling by 0.6% and reaching its lowest point since Nov.10, 2022. As of yesterday afternoon, the baht is valued at 36.2 per U.S. dollar. Thai lawmakers plan fresh push to tighten use of cannabis

Thailand’s legislators will renew a push for an overarching law on use of cannabis for medical and research purposes, a senior lawmaker said on Wednesday, more than a year after the narcotic was legalized without proper regulations.

Stimulating private consumption is a reasonable strategy for the government to maintain economic growth amid global uncertainties, according to Tim Leelahaphan, an economist at Standard Chartered Bank Thailand. The first half of 2023 saw a 7% year-on-year increase in the country’s private consumption.

The Ministry of Commerce is considering using its extensive network of retail outlets, shops and eateries, under the “Blue Flag” (Thong Fah) program, to allow people, who may have difficulty finding shops under the digital wallet 4km radius rule, to spend the 10,000-baht benefit under the scheme.

Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has instructed officials to consider the possibility of leveraging the 144,821 Blue Flag outlets across the country, to overcome the limitation that the 10,000 baht can only be spent within a 4km radius of the recipient’s residence. Continued …

Thai gold market glistens: Prices sparkle with a 100 baht boost in a day

Gold prices in Thailand saw a significant surge as per the Gold Traders Assn. Compared to the closing price of the previous day, gold ornaments Tuesday were sold at an increased rate of 33,100 baht (US$926) per baht weight, marking an upswing of 100 baht.

For 96.5% pure gold bars, the buying price stood at 32,500 baht, while the selling price was 32,600 baht (US$912). For 96.5% pure gold ornaments, the figures were 31,911.80 baht for buying and 33,100 baht for selling. Continued …

Cha Am has a new ‘naga’ attraction

Tourists have been flocking to a new (ish) cultural landmark in Cha-am, which officials proudly tout as the largest of its kind in all of Thailand. The naga statue “Grandfather Phaya Petch Kiri,” also known as Maha Muni Sri Suthon Nakhon Ratcha, stands 31 meters tall, stretches over 227 meters in length, and has a diameter of two meters. The statue’s body is uniquely crafted as a Yantra talisman, considered the primordial Yantra of all Yantras and regarded as the highest and most sacred. For believers, the landmark stands as a symbol of prosperity for individuals and their families. (HHT)

Arrests ordered in Narathiwat fireworks blast, death toll reaches 12, with 300 homes ruined

Authorities in the southern province of Narathiwat have issued arrest warrants for the owners of a trading center that stored fireworks for resale and exploded on Saturday at 3 pm, killing 12 people and destroying 300 houses and premises in the Muno Market area of Muno subdistrict in the Sungai Kolok district of the province bordering Malaysia.

Over 108 people were admitted to hospital but, currently, only 10 are being held with physical injuries requiring medical supervision. The arrest warrants are effective from today, and call on the owners of the local business to present themselves before the court to answer charges after a police investigation was opened on Saturday on the instructions of National Police Chief Damrongsak Kittiprapas. Restaurant owner confronts negative reviewer at their home

Following an online uproar when a restaurant owner confronted a customer who had left a negative review, the owner herself sought to clarify events. She states she did not intend to cause distress but rather to understand the customer’s complaints.

A tropical depression in the Bay of Bengal, which is moving toward Thailand, is expected to bring heavy rain to the northern, central, eastern, and southern regions from May 11-16, the Meteorological Department warned today.

23 Illegal Immigrants arrested in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province

A substantial operation led by high-ranking officials from the Thai Immigration Bureau has resulted in the arrest of 23 Myanmar nationals who had reportedly crossed into the Kingdom of Thailand illegally.

The operation was directed by Police Lt. Gen. Pakphoomphiphat Sajaphan, the Immigration commissioner. The Energy Ministry should bring the price of diesel down further if it wants to stimulate the economy and tourism, the Land Transport Assn. of Thailand (LTAT) said.

LTAT chief Apichart Prairungruang said on Wednesday that the ministry’s decision to only reduce the price of diesel by 50 satang per liter will have no effect on the cost of transportation. Wild elephant tramples woman to death in front of officials

In a devastating incident, a woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in front of wildlife officials in Wang Chan District, Rayong. Even after firing two magazines of bullets, the authorities could not stop the charging animal, which was extremely fast and caught everyone off-guard.

The tragic event occurred at a palm plantation in the district, where 40-year-old Namthip was fatally assaulted by an elephant. Police Major Saisawat Shinawong, an on-duty official at Wang Chan police station, was immediately informed of the incident and coordinated with local authorities, medical teams, and rescue workers to rush to the scene. Expressway from southern Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi being studied

A feasibility study on the elevated motorway linking southern Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi Airport is underway and, once completed, it will be proposed to Cabinet for approval after an environmental impact assessment (EIA) is conducted, officials at the Expressway Authority of Thailand said.
