Unsafe dust levels in 51 provinces

Fifty-one of the 77 provinces were shrouded with hazardous levels of ultra-fine dust on Monday morning, most of them in the central plains, the north and the northeast.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said five central plains provinces were blanketed by red (seriously hazardous) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5). Continued …

Public advised to use N95 mask as PM2.5 in Bangkok at unsafe levels

The public has been advised to wear N95 masks whenever they go outside on Sunday as air pollution in Bangkok remains high, with PM2.5 levels reaching unhealthy levels.

As of 10am on Sunday, the air quality index (AQI) in Bangkok was 187, which is classified as “unhealthy for sensitive groups”. The AQI for PM2.5, which are fine particulates that can penetrate deep into the lungs, is 118. Continued …

PM to submit dust control plan to court

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Sunday that he will submit a plan to solve the PM2.5 fine dust problem as ordered by the Chiang Mai Administrative Court within 90 days.

He said the court requires him and the national environment panel to draft a plan in 90 days following a complaint filed by a network of people in the north. Officials will be invited to discuss the matter and draft the plan as ordered by the court, he said. Continued …

In the latest report this week, 45 out of 50 areas in Bangkok have recorded excessive levels of PM 2.5, surpassing the standard threshold of 37.5 micrograms per cubic meter and entering the hazardous range for health.

Thailand bracing for temperature drop due to cold blast from China

A new blast of cold air is set to lower temperatures by four degrees Celsius, warns the Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD). This weather shift, prompted by a strong high-pressure system from southern China and northern Vietnam, is anticipated to affect the northeastern and eastern parts of Thailand today.

The cold weather and strong winds in the northeast are expected to result in a drop of 2-4 degrees Celsius, while the eastern region will experience a 1-3 degrees Celsius decrease. Focus on food courts as Thailand moves to tackle food waste

Thailand produces 9.7 million tons of food waste per year, or 146 kilograms for each resident, says Pollution Control Department Director-general Preeyaporn Suwanaged.

She explained that most of the waste came from wet markets, followed by shopping malls, convenience stores, and office buildings. According to Preeyaporn, the main source of food waste was food courts, and hence the issue should be tackled at its origin. Continued … 

New tiger discovery in Chumphon province

Three tigers, believed to traverse between Thailand and Myanmar, have been discovered in Chumphon province’s forests. The big cats were detected last Friday in the Tanao Sri Mountain Range, which forms the border between the two countries.

The tigers are suspected of patrolling the forests of Duang Charoen, Nern Thong, and Chong Kamew in the Ta Sae district’s Song Pee Noing subdistrict. According to Attapon Charoenchansa, head of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation (DNP), continuous monitoring suggests that these tigers regularly cross between Thailand and Myanmar. Wild gaurs in rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima

Tourism business operators from Wang Nam Khieo district in Nakhon Ratchasima have put forward initiatives to tackle the escalating number of incidents involving wild gaurs. These large, wild bulls are causing havoc, attacking individuals, and wreaking destruction on crops.

The most recent incident occurred on Jan. 11 when a mother and her seven-year-old daughter were assaulted by a rogue gaur while they were traveling on a motorbike along Highway No. 3052, connecting Wang Nam Khieo and Pak Chong district. The gaur charged at the motorbike, causing it to skid across the road. The young girl was caught in the gaur’s horns and was carried off into the nearby forest as the animal dashed off the road. Thailand has a great potential to become a global medical hub, with 60 hospitals meeting international healthcare standards, the Office of the Board of Investment (BOI) chief said. Narit Therdsteerasukdi, secretary-general of the BOI Office, said on Sunday that BOI would also offer initiatives to support this ambitious goal.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has directed the Industry Ministry to launch a comprehensive development initiative for the cocoa industry in eastern Thailand, spanning the process from farming to marketing.

The top five commercial banks of Thailand have reported combined net profits of 138.9 billion baht for 2023, beating the forecasts of financial analysts.

In their announcements of their fourth quarter financial performance, the five commercial banks —TMBThanachart Bank Plc (TTB), CIMB Thai Bak Plc, SCB X Plc, Krungsri (Bank of Ayudhya) Plc, and Kasikornbank Plc — said their profits were a result of higher net interest income, net fee and services, and mostly effective cost management. Thailand witnessed a near 400% surge in registrations of electric vehicles (EV) in 2023 over the previous year. The Electric Vehicle Assn. of Thailand (EVAT) released a summary of the EV landscape, showcasing significant growth and a promising future for electric mobility in the country.

New registrations for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), particularly electric cars, reached 76,366 units in 2023, marking a substantial increase from 9,678 units in the previous year. The Excise Department estimates electric vehicle (EV) imports will reach 175,000 units within two years, says Director-general Ekniti Nitithanprapas.

Deadly explosion at fireworks factory leaves all 23 workers dead in Suphanburi

All the 23 workers in a fireworks factory in Suphanburi province were killed in a deadly explosion on Wednesday afternoon, local authorities said. Police and local officials said the accident happened at 3.30pm at the factory in Ban Khoi Ngam or Moo 3 village in Tambon Sala Khao of Muang district.

Authorities believe the 23 workers were assembling the fireworks when suddenly there was an explosion, flattening the factory and killing all of them. Continued …

Rangers in a Phetchabun wildlife sanctuary rescued a baby elephant stuck in a pool of mud and successfully returned it to its herd last week. Ronnarat Sirimakorn, chief of Phetchabun’s Tat Mok National Park, said on Wednesday that a team of rangers spotted the baby elephant stuck in a dry creek at 2pm last Thursday.

Thailand aims for 40 million tourists and 3.5 trillion baht revenue

Thailand targets 23.1 million MICE visitors in fiscal 2024

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has set a target to attract a minimum of 23.1 million meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) visitors by fiscal 2024. Through this, they aim to generate a revenue of 136 billion baht, which equates to 75% of the income recorded in 2019.

Thai air force to battle surging fine dust pollution crisis

With fine dust pollution surging to alarming levels in Thailand, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has tasked the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) with spearheading the nation’s countermeasures. Air Force Chief, ACM Phanpakdee Pattanakul, confirmed the directive on Tuesday.

Power bills likely stable in 2024

Electricity bills in Thailand are unlikely to be trimmed from the existing rate, as the power tariff, which is used to calculate the bills, is expected to stay in a range of 4.2-4.25 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), says Khomgrich Tantravanich, secretary-general of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

Hua Hin’s long journey toward a fully functioning, modern airport has reached yet another juncture with the latest updates on its ongoing upgrades.

The long-standing issue of the airport’s inability to accommodate larger aircraft such as the A320, which seats up to 180 passengers, remains a significant hurdle. Police raids in response to murder plot linked with Bt1 billion family business concern

Thai police on Friday morning cut the head off a dangerous plot that was already in motion to murder a businessman, his mother and their lawyer. The suspected mastermind behind the diabolical scheme, however, turned out to be the man’s father and the woman’s estranged husband.

Police with the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) were alerted to the plot in November linked to a substantial business dispute. The matter became urgent in recent days when investigators detected three hit men pursuing the target while traveling in Bangkok. House says yes to marriage equality

The House’s approval of all four bills seeking to amend the Civil and Commercial Code to allow same-sex marriages in the country during their first reading has received positive responses from members of society, according to government spokesman Chai Watcharonke.

PTT Exploration and Production Public Co. (PTTEP) has received the International Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice 2023 in the environmental improvement category with gold level from the green organization, for the PTTEP reforestation project. “We don’t want our brothers and sisters in other parts of the country to face the impacts we have been facing,” says Thanawan Kainok, addressing a panel discussion on the “Past, Present and Future of Potash in Isan” in Wanon Niwat district, in northeast Thailand’s Sakon Nakhon province.

At the same time, rice farmers remain among the poorest occupational groups in Thailand and are extremely vulnerable to the impacts of a changing climate — rice farming is a water-intensive and temperature-sensitive activity conducted in a climate that is becoming increasingly characterized by longer dry spells and higher temperatures.

The Cabinet has resolved to cap the price of diesel and electricity for households in a bid to ease people’s financial burden, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Tuesday.

Fine dust pollution spikes across Thailand

Intensified fine dust pollution has led to heightened levels of fine particulate matter under 2.5 microns, known as PM2.5, in 30 provinces across Thailand, including Bangkok. This development was recorded yesterday through the satellite-based Check Foon application, developed by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Samut Songkhram experienced the highest dust level, peaking at 84.1 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) at 8am. This level significantly surpassed the safe threshold of 50µg/m³, making it the only province to reach a code red status, indicating potentially harmful air. Overseas Thai workers, particularly those in Israel, are in the limelight as the conflict escalates in the region. Over 7,000 Thai individuals are awaiting evacuation, with instances of Thais being kidnapped by militants.

Records from the Bank of Thailand reveal that the remittance from these overseas workers in the first three quarters of the current year was around 184 billion baht. Flu outbreak sweeps Thailand

Thailand is grappling with a severe flu outbreak, with tens of thousands of patients reported in the past two months. The Office for Disease Control and Prevention 9 in Nakhon Ratchasima (OCP9) urges everyone to intensify precautionary measures and to continue wearing masks.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) between a teacher and students in a Chiang Mai secondary school, which required students to pay a fine of 2,000 baht per credit if they failed or scored zero in exams, has been scrapped.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is to hold a public hearing to consider the new garbage collection and disposal fee this month following the expiration of the current rate on Oct. 1, Bangkok Deputy Gov. Jakkapan Phiewngam said on Monday.

Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai expressed confidence on Monday that the government’s “Quick Win” policy to reduce the cost of living by reducing consumer goods’ prices would create a “win-win” for both operators and consumers.

Phumtham told a press conference that 288 business operators had agreed to support the measure to reduce prices of 151,675 items of goods and services from now until the end of this year. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has asked the armed forces to delay their arms procurement plans for the 2024 fiscal year so the government can spend its budget to help those who are most in need, sources said.

Hua Hin-Pattaya bus service twice a day

Hua Hin now has once-daily bus service to Pattaya, leaving Hua Hin at 9am and departing from Pattaya at 8am. Tickets are 473 THB.

Tickets can be bought in person at the Hua Hin bus station or online. Buses depart from the Hua Hin bus station and in front of Government Savings Bank, Cha Am.. Tickets
