Wat Hua Hin: A historic temple in the heart of the city

Located in the center of town, Wat Hua Hin is the main temple in Hua Hin and a significant landmark for both locals and visitors. Known for its spiritual significance and historic roots, the temple offers a chance to experience local religious traditions and pay respect to one of the area’s most revered monks, Luang Pu Nak.

Originally established in 1896 during the reign of King Rama V, the temple was first known as Wat Amparam. Over the years, it was renamed Wat Hua Laem before finally becoming Wat Hua Hin, the name it holds today. The temple belongs to the Maha Nikaya monastic order and sits on more than 17 rai of land. Teenage pregnancy rates prompt action in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Prachuap Khiri Khan authorities have reviewed the province’s teenage pregnancy situation, highlighting the need for continued collaboration between health, education, and social sectors to address the issue.

Figures presented at the Provincial Public Health Office on Wednesday showed that from 2017 to 2025 there were 276 births to mothers under 20 years old, including 19 cases aged 10–14. Officials from the Office of Marine and Coastal Resources Region 3 conducted a public awareness campaign at Cha-am Beach on Tuesday to promote the Smoke-Free Beach Project and encourage proper cigarette disposal.

Led by Supachai Ochawat, director of the Marine Resource Conservation Division, the campaign aimed to educate beachgoers, local vendors, and tourists about regulations prohibiting smoking outside designated areas under Section 17 of the Marine and Coastal Resources Management Promotion Act B.E. 2558 (2015). Heavy thundershowers expected in Thailand

Thailand’s Meteorological Department reported today that a low-pressure cell covering northern Laos and Vietnam, combined with the prevailing southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf, is expected to bring widespread thundershowers to the country.

South (east coast): Scattered thundershowers mostly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat; minimum 24-26°C, maximum 33-36°C; waves about a meter high and above 2 meters high in thundershowers. Continued … 

Prosecutors indict 23 in Bangkok building collapse

Thai prosecutors yesterday indicted 23 suspects, including the head or Italian-Thai Development Plc, and a Chinese state-owned firm for violations that led to the collapse of the State Audit Office tower in Bangkok during the March 28 earthquake.

The partially built 30-story tower in Chatuchak district was the only building to collapse from tremors emanating from the powerful 7.7 magnitude quake in neighboring Myanmar. At least 95 people — almost all of them construction labourers — were killed in the incident. Continued …

The poker legalization debate

While poker may be recognized as a sport worldwide, in Thailand, efforts to decriminalize the card game are part of a larger political game linked to plans for entertainment complexes.

The debate flared up again when acting Prime Minister and Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai announced on July 30 that he had signed an order repealing a 1958 Interior Ministry directive, paving the way for legislative changes that would decriminalize poker. Continued …

Thai consumer confidence slips further

Thai consumer confidence dropped for a sixth consecutive month in July to its lowest level in 31 months, due mainly to concerns over US tariffs, a lagging economy, and government instability, a survey showed yesterday.

The index compiled by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce fell to 51.7 in July from 52.7 in the previous month. The sluggish economy and the trade war, as well as high living costs, continue to undermine confidence, it said. Continued …

Compensation package to mitigate impact of Trump’s tariffs

The Thai government plans compensation package to counter Trump’s tariffs, with a proposal for tax cuts in the works, aimed at supporting affected sectors.

According to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, “Some industries, like diamond and gemstone exporters, may be asked by buyers to bear part of the cost burden, such as half of the tariff. Meanwhile, other sectors, with high competition and multiple source countries, may pass most of the cost onto the American buyers or consumers,” Pichai said. Continued …

Thai elecronics firms consider moves to mitigate US tariffs

The electronics sector, which employs roughly 600,000 people, has started to freeze hiring and study partial manufacturing relocation to countries with lower costs and higher production efficiency than Thailand, in a bid to minimize the impact of US tariffs, says the Electronics & Computer Employers Assn.

Sampan Silapanad, president of the association, said while electronics manufacturers are unlikely to completely pull out of Thailand, partial manufacturing relocation is possible, especially for companies that already have production facilities in several countries, giving them more flexibility. U.S. President Donald Trump’s new tariff rates on U.S. imports from dozens of countries took effect yesterday, the latest chapter in the saga of Trump’s reshaping of global trade. But many questions remain.

UOB Thailand expects flat growth for its mortgage portfolio this year for the first time in several decades, in line with a contraction in the property market.

Thai Airways reports 12 billion baht profit in Q2

Thai Airways (THAI) is flying high again, racking up a profit of more than 12 billion baht in the second quarter of 2025, fueled by cheaper jet fuel and strong passenger growth.

The flag carrier and its subsidiaries reported revenue of 44.83 billion baht (excluding one-time items) for the quarter, up 1.9% on last year. The four-day Mother’s Day holiday this weekend is expected to generate 13 billion baht from 3.16 million domestic trips, with most tourists preferring to travel within their own provinces and avoid cross-regional journeys to save on costs, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

A rescue team yesterday discovered the body of a Canadian girl who had drowned in the sea off Kata Beach in Phuket. Officers from Karon Police Station and rescuers from the Kuson Dham Foundation were called to Kata Beach after the 10-year-old was swept away by waves while swimming with her family.

    The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. State hospitals ‘facing financial troubles’

A top Public Health Ministry official has admitted that state-owned hospitals nationwide are facing financial problems, and cooperation is urgently needed from their directors to help fix the issue.

Dr. Opas Kankawinpong, the ministry’s permanent secretary, said the ministry is struggling to run the public health system due to an insufficient budget, which is affecting around 1,000 hospitals that fall under its responsibility. Thailand braces for flood of rain until Tuesday

Heavy rain and potential flash floods have been forecast across Thailand until Tuesday, Sept. 17, warns the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD). The announcement cautioned that several regions would experience increased rainfall and strong winds in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand.

Northern Mekong River provinces battling the most severe flooding in 40–50 years

Northern Thailand is on high alert after heavy flooding mid-week hit Chiang Rai province, particularly the Mae Sai district. However, as water recedes there after closing Chiang Rai Airport, the Mekong River will continue to rise from Friday until next Tuesday.

For instance, elevated water levels were measured as rising 1.23 meters in Nong Khai on Thursday as rescue services and officials prepare for the threatened overflow of the river. This is due to 2-3 times the normal rainfall in the region over the last few days, caused by an acute depression. 36,000+ families in north, central Thailand still flooded in

As many as 36,199 households in 24 districts of seven provinces in the north and central regions are still overwhelmed by heavy flooding, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said. In its last update on Thursday, the department said 545 villages in 24 districts in Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Tak, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Ang Thong and Ayutthaya were still inundated.

From Aug. 16, a total of 106,467 families in 2,975 villages in 125 districts in 27 provinces were affected by floods, the department said. Since then, some 33 people have died from drowning or landslides, and 24 have sustained injuries. Continued …

The economic center of Thailand’s northernmost province is now inundated, with floodwaters reaching waist-deep levels and continuing to rise due to the overflowing Kok River.

Continuous heavy rains over the past few days after typhoon Yagi made landfall in Vietnam have triggered flash floods, river overflows, and landslides across various areas of the northernmost Diocese of Chiang Rai in Thailand.

The government is to launch the first phase of the digital wallet scheme on Sept. 25, disbursing 10,000 baht a head to approximately 14.2 million people from a budget allocation of 140 billion baht, the Finance Ministry said on Thursday.

Doubts cast on central bank’s GDP forecasts

Thailand’s GDP growth is unlikely to increase in the second half of this year as anticipated by the central bank, according to the newly appointed chairman of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), the state planning agency.

Speaking after a seminar held on Thursday entitled “Surfing a Sea of Opportunities Amid Geopolitical Tides”, hosted by Kiatnakin Phatra Financial Group (KKP), Supavud Saicheua, chairman of the NESDC and an adviser to KKP, said the tightening monetary policy of the Bank of Thailand’s (BoT) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has impacted access to loans for individuals and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as increasing financial costs for borrowers. Consumer confidence slips again in June

Thai consumer confidence dropped for a fourth straight month in June, falling to its lowest level since October last year on concerns over a global slowdown and political uncertainty, according to a survey carried out by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC).

The state plan to reduce biomass and biogas fuels in the new power development plan (PDP) has disappointed the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), which wants the authorities to maintain or increase their proportion to make better use of agricultural waste.

The ongoing conflict in Myanmar between the military government and opposition forces shows no sign of abating. Fighting continues in several areas and has prompted Thai companies to pull out and divest 7 billion dollars.

In the past, Thai investors ranked third in investment promotion applications with a total value of 11.6 billion dollars, or 12.47%, in 155 approved projects. Currently, Thai investment in Myanmar ranks fifth with a value of 4.45 billion dollars, with 105 projects underway. Hua Hin’s mayor has confirmed that the water supply to large parts of Hua Hin will be suspended from yesterday ahead of the Songkran festival, which will still go ahead and which is due to get underway from today.

Hua Hin’s water management authorities have said there will be a temporary suspension of the water supply from the Khao Laeng water production plant. Solar inclusive EGAT power project activated, now supplying electricity

Customers are now receiving energy generated by the floating solar cells at Ubonrat Dam in Khon Kaen province after its launch on Tuesday, Jiraporn Sirikham, acting governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), announced.

The key advantage of the 24 megawatt hydro-floating solar hybrid power plant at the Ubonrat Dam lies in its integration of three clean-energy sources: solar energy, hydropower, and an energy storage system using batteries. Salt, sea and spoonbills

During a morning stroll through vast salt fields in the seaside town of Samut Sakhon, I couldn’t resist but take breathtaking photos of a large flock of birds. Close by, experienced birdwatcher Suchart Daengpayon (also known as Mr. Tee) led a small group of foreign tourists on a trip to see the food-seeking behaviors of the spoon-billed sandpiper, an endangered shorebird species.

Fortunately, Mr. Tee kindly allowed me to use his spotting scope and gave me a brief overview of bird conservation efforts in tambon Khok Kham. Over 30 years ago, he and his neighbors established the Khok Kham Natural Conservation Club after working with an international survey team that wanted to get insights on the biodiverse marine habitats in Thailand’s wetlands. Rama II Road upgrades will be completed in 2025, government says

There is an end in sight to the ongoing construction of the main route between Bangkok and the south of Thailand. The Department of Highways has confirmed that the long-awaited upgrades to Rama II Road, a key artery to Thailand’s southern region, are set to be completed by 2025.

The Department of Highways (DOH) and the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) recently moved to address some of the challenges brought about by the extensive construction work on the road, which is one of the main routes to Cha Am and Hua Hin. Continued …

January’s economic data shows Thailand on track for recovery

Thailand’s economic figures in January showed signs of recovery, with a rebound evident in tourism, consumption and exports, though private investments have slowed down, the Fiscal Policy Office said.

Pornchai Theeravet, FPO director-general, said on Wednesday that several economic figures, especially exports that expanded for six consecutive months, showed signs of improvement for the country. Consumer confidence hits 47-month high

Consumer confidence rose in January to the highest level in 47 months, propped up by the economic recovery, says Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) Director-general Pornchai Thiraveja.

AOT and immigration unite to tackle Suvarnabhumi Airport queues

Airports of Thailand (AOT) and Immigration Division 2 are joining hands to tackle a pressing issue at Suvarnabhumi Airport: inordinately long passenger queues. The urgency to address this problem was triggered by the concerns raised by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin about the prolonged processing times at the airport.

AOT President Kerati Kijmanawat and Immigration Division 2’s Police Major Gen. Choengron Rimpadee conducted a subsequent inspection to assess the situation. While flood risk is projected to intensify globally, the main driver of major weather-related economic losses in Southeast Asia, are tropical cyclones, according to data from the Swiss Re Institute.

These are just the lower bound of potential economic losses, as the study does not cover all weather perils (e.g., heatwaves) and account for property losses only. Thai forest area in decline, matching world trend

The world’s total forest areas have shrunk by nearly 20 million square kilometres in the past three decades, from 42.03 million sq.km. reported in 1992, to 40.44 million sq.km. in 2021, according to World Bank data, which was last updated in October 2023.

Thailand, meanwhile, does not make the World Bank’s top 10, or even top 20 list of the largest share of world forests. Data from the Royal Forest Department indicates that the kingdom had a total forest area of 162,909 sq.km. in 2023, a figure that has gradually dropped in recent years. Continued …

Internationally famous Maya Bay saw 1.73 million visitors in 2016 and the National Park raked in about 561 million baht that year. But in 2018, when COVID hit, the Thai government saw a chance to restore the heavily used beach to its former glory.

Marijuana ban put on hold

The proposed legislation that would ban recreational cannabis use in Thailand has been delayed by the government to gather further public feedback, according to Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew.

Slow economic growth, lack of foreign investment are major challenges

Thailand’s biggest economic challenge is that its economy has been growing at a slower pace, about 3% per annum, than Malaysia and China, at about 5% annually, because it lacks the ability to attract foreign investors, according to Kobsak Pootrakool, executive vice president of the Bangkok Bank and a respected economist.

Consumer confidence rose for a sixth consecutive month in January, reaching the highest level in 47 months since March 2020, propped up by the government’s stimulus measures to propel spending and reduce electricity and fuel prices.

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) reported on Tuesday the consumer confidence index rose to 62.9 in January, up from 62.0 in December, 60.9 in November, 60.2 in October, 58.7 in September, 56.9 in August and 55.6 in July. Continued …

AOT sees soaring profits as global aviation industry thrives

Airports of Thailand (AOT) on Monday reported a profit of 4.56 billion baht in the first quarter of fiscal 2024 (October-December 2023), a jump of 1,231% compared to the same period last year, which saw 342.77 million baht of profit.

The airport authority said it had enjoyed significantly increased revenue from both its aviation and non-aviation businesses. A prominent virologist said this morning that a new Covid-19 strain, JN.1, has now taken hold in Thailand and is turning into the most widespread variant, as it is highly contagious, and this leading to a spike in the number of patients.

Energy board sets electricity unit price at Bt4.18

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has set the fuel tariff (FT) surcharge on electricity, for the January through April period, at 39.72 satang per unit and the electricity unit price at 4.18 baht, after adjusting the formula for the calculation of natural gas and electricity prices.

Komkrit Tantravanich, secretary-general of the office of the ERC, said today that, in setting these FT and electricity unit prices, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Thailand’s major power producer, will have to bear the loss, estimated at 15 billion baht, for the 4-month period. Cyclone Mocha to bring heavy rains to much of Thailand over the weekend

The north, central, eastern and southern regions of Thailand will experience isolated heavy to very heavy rains from Friday to Monday due to the influence of tropical cyclone “Mocha”, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) said today.

The cyclone, which was hovering over the central Bay of Bengal as of 4am today, was moving north at about 10 km/hr, with sustained winds of about 105 km/hr. It is expected to make landfall over Myanmar on either Sunday or Monday (May 14-15). Continued …

Thai banks considering cash transaction fee ‘to cover their costs’

The members of the Thai Bankers’ Assn. are considering adjusting banks’ fee structures, including levying a cash transaction fee, the association president, Payong Srivanich, said. The association will have to seek approval for the move from the Bank of Thailand (BOT).

Payong, who is also the executive director and member of Krungthai Bank’s risk oversight committee, said the adjustment of the fee structure was aimed at striking a balance between the banks’ costs and services, and not to increase profits. Continued …

Global warming and smog are boosting production of Thai air conditioners

Scorching heat and air pollution have driven production of air conditioners in Thailand to their highest level in eight years, the Office of Industrial Economics said on Thursday.

Warawan Chitaroon, its general director, said Thailand exported about US$850 million worth of air conditioners in March alone, up 16.7% from the same month last year. Continued …

RTA army chief assures there’ll be ‘no coups on his watch’

Royal Thai Army (RTA) Gen. Narongpan Jittkaewtae assured the Thai public yesterday that there would be no coups on his watch, stating that the term should not exist in anyone’s vocabulary. Narongpan is set to retire on Sept. 30 and provided reassurances in the lead-up to the elections on Sunday. There have been concerns about possible unrest following the polls.

Consumer confidence in April rose for an 11th straight month, reaching the highest level in 38 months, helped by a reduction in Covid-19 infections, the recovery of domestic tourism and lively election campaigns nationwide.

Arson attacks strike 23 locations in far south

Twenty-three locations in Thailand’s southernmost provinces were hit by arson attacks late on Thursday night, resulting in the torching of mobile phone antenna towers and power poles and the burning of tires. The incidents occurred between 9pm and 11pm, officials said.
