Thai air force to battle surging fine dust pollution crisis

With fine dust pollution surging to alarming levels in Thailand, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has tasked the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) with spearheading the nation’s countermeasures. Air Force Chief, ACM Phanpakdee Pattanakul, confirmed the directive on Tuesday.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) revealed that the provinces of Samut Songkhram and Samut Sakhon are presently grappling with high levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter (PM2.5). Power bills likely stable in 2024

Electricity bills in Thailand are unlikely to be trimmed from the existing rate, as the power tariff, which is used to calculate the bills, is expected to stay in a range of 4.2-4.25 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), says Khomgrich Tantravanich, secretary-general of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

The commission agreed earlier to reduce the power tariff to 4.2 baht a unit, down from 4.68 baht a unit, applicable from January to April. Continued …

A bus heading to a pier in Phuket overturned on Tuesday morning, injuring 17 Chinese tourists and three Thais, police said. The accident took place at around 8am on the outbound Thep Kasattree Road in Thalang district.

Thailand’s escalating smog crisis: Choking smog in 55 provinces

People in 55 of the 77 provinces were breathing dirty air this morning, with red-coded pollution levels in 20 provinces, mainly in the Central Plains.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 9am that unsafe levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) ranged from 38.7 to 113.6 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the previous 24 hours. The government-set safe threshold is 37.5µg/m³. Continued …

Bottled water contains more plastic particles than thought

A typical one-liter (33-ounce) bottle of water contains some 240,000 plastic fragments on average, according to a new study. Many of those fragments have historically gone undetected, the researchers determined, suggesting that health concerns linked to plastic pollution may be dramatically underestimated.

The peer-reviewed study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is the first to evaluate bottled water for the presence of “nanoplastics” — plastic particles under 1 micrometer in length, or one-seventieth the width of a human hair. The findings show that bottled water could contain up to 100 times more plastic particles than previously estimated, as earlier studies only accounted for microplastics, or pieces between 1 and 5,000 micrometers. Council of State says no go-ahead for digital wallet yet

The Council of State’s secretary-general rejected claims that the government’s advisory board has given the go-ahead to legislation allowing a 500- billion-baht loan to finance the digital wallet scheme.

Online vendors are required to file taxes for the year 2024, with the Revenue Department mandating online platforms to disclose income data. This directive, effective from Jan. 1, applies to all businesses, including e-commerce, food and product delivery services like Shopee, Lazada, Grab, and TikTok.

These platforms, registered in Thailand and having an annual income exceeding 1 billion baht, are obligated to maintain special accounts. Thailand has welcomed over 600,000 foreign visitors during the first week of 2024, with the Chinese topping the list for the first week of the year. Forty-eight of the 77 provinces were blanketed in unsafe levels of ultra-fine dust this morning, 21 of them reporting red-level air pollution.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) at 9am reported red levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 75.9 to 145.2 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the previous 24 hours. Continued …

Zika cases reach 30 in Hua Hin and Pranburi

In response to a rising number of Zika virus cases, officials in Hua Hin and Pranburi are intensifying their prevention efforts. A meeting held yesterday discussed ways to implement effective measures against the spread of the virus throughout Prachuap Khiri Khan.

The Zika virus, known for being carried by the same mosquitoes that spread dengue fever and Chikungunya, poses a significant risk to pregnant women. Infection during pregnancy can lead to microcephaly, a serious birth defect affecting a baby’s brain development. Continued …

San Paulo Hospital Hua Hin earns AACI accreditation

San Paulo Hospital Hua Hin has achieved a significant milestone in healthcare by receiving the first “AACI” international medical standard certification in upper southern Thailand. The achievement was commemorated in a ceremony held at the hospital yesterday.

Dr. Somphorn Kampong, a board member of the American Accreditation Commission International (AACI) and president of AACI Asia Pacific, presented two AACI standard certificates to Dr. Ekalaph Thongborisut, the chairman and director of San Paulo Hospital Hua Hin. All Entertainment Venues Prohibited From Making Very Loud Noise

All entertainment venues nationwide have been warned to never make very loud noise, which might otherwise disturb their neighborhoods, or else they could be shut down by law, according to Sutthipong Chulcharoen, undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior.

Operators of all entertainment spots throughout the country are officially cautioned to never play music so loud and boisterous that it may ruin public peace in their neighborhood, otherwise they could probably be ordered by the authorities to close for as long as five years, Sutthipong said yesterday. 5-meter python rescued from temple pipes in Satun province

The campaign aims to stimulate domestic spending at the beginning of the year by helping shoppers obtain electronic tax invoices and receipts from the Grab app, enabling tax deductions of up to Bt50,000. Ukrainian drowns trying to swim from Koh Chang to nearby island

A Ukrainian man drowned near Bailan Beach on the island of Koh Chang in the eastern province of Trat. He reportedly tried to swim from Koh Chang to Koh Man Nai after an argument with his family.

Locals discovered the dead body near Bailan Beach in the Koh Chang Tai subdistrict, on Koh Chang at around 2pm yesterday, and reported the matter to the village chief, Termsak Sertsri. Foreigner Filmed Urinating Off the Back of TukTuk in Phuket

A video clip of a foreign man who was standing and urinating on the back of a tuk tuk in Patong has gone viral on social media this week, causing outrage and anger from many Thai social media users who demanded the foreigner be arrested and charged to the fullest extent of the law.

Thailand’s Famed Elephant Tourism Is Controversial — Here’s How to Pick an Ethical Sanctuary

In Thailand, it’s very easy to encounter an elephant. Some sites allow quiet observation, as you admire the massive animals from afar. Other tourist venues offer activities like feeding, riding, or bathing with elephants. Many places toss around the term “ethical” when describing the encounters, but they often are not the sanctuaries they promote.

(Editor note: Expat News visited the Elephant Nature Park outside of Chiang Mai, and we have to dispute one warning about not physically interacting with the elephants. Unlike some “sanctuaries”, where the elephants are basically penned in – or chained or caged, pachyderms at Elephant Nature Park mostly are allowed to roam free in the mountainous jungles of the park and visitors are allowed to mingle with them for bathing, feeding and walks. These are rescued elephants and their young, and as long as there is no riding of the elephants, we see no problem with this activity.)

“Visiting an animal sanctuary while traveling can be a great way to support local animal welfare and conservation efforts, but you need to do your homework because there are many bogus sanctuaries operating that can lure in well-meaning and unsuspecting tourists,” Wendy Higgins, director of international media for Humane Society International. November’s Thai rice exports surged 67.9% in value from the same period last year to US$632 million (23.01 billion baht), according to the Commerce Ministry. Rice exports for the first 11 months of the year rose 29.6% to $4.61 billion (159.55 billion baht).

Swedes in Thailand: Holiday Nightmare

Twenty-year-old Linnea Pakermo had been traveling around Thailand for two months with her friend. For Christmas, they would spend the holiday with her friend’s family, who came to Thailand to visit. Fine dust pollution spikes across Thailand

Intensified fine dust pollution has led to heightened levels of fine particulate matter under 2.5 microns, known as PM2.5, in 30 provinces across Thailand, including Bangkok. This development was recorded yesterday through the satellite-based Check Foon application, developed by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Samut Songkhram experienced the highest dust level, peaking at 84.1 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) at 8am. This level significantly surpassed the safe threshold of 50µg/m³, making it the only province to reach a code red status, indicating potentially harmful air. The air pollution crisis in Thailand, specifically the hazardous PM2.5 particles, presents a formidable challenge to new Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his cabinet. This issue transcends mere environmental concerns, morphing into a litmus test for the government’s commitment to public health and its willingness to confront entrenched industrial and agricultural interests.

It’s 5:50am and I’m in Chaiyaphum province, Thailand, following a single-file column of russet-robed monks as they tread barefoot down the red-dirt road that runs between their monastery and the nearby village. In the latest EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) reported yesterday, Thailand’s grasp of the English language has been categorized as “very low proficiency,” ranking 101st out of 113 non-native English-speaking countries.

Prachuap Khiri Khan recorded the lowest score of the Thai provinces included in the survey. A fire broke out at nine buildings within Rim Ping Flower Market in the northern province of Chiang Mai at 3am yesterday. A witness claimed the blaze was triggered when a lantern from the Loy Krathong and Yi Peng Lantern Festival fell onto the buildings.

Cabinet green-lights 4am extended hours for tourist hotspots

The Thai Cabinet has given the green light to a draft regulation set forth by the Interior Ministry, permitting extended hours until 4am at entertainment venues in prominent tourist hotspots. The affected areas include Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chon Buri, Koh Samui, and Phuket.

Thailand on target to meet 25 million visitors in 2023

A total of 24,081,613 foreign tourists entered Thailand between Jan. 1 and Nov. 25 this year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced on Tuesday, adding foreign arrivals in November alone amounted to 100,059 people.

Doubts over Thai target of 8.2 million Chinese visitors in 2024

Analysts have expressed doubts over the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) ambitious target of attracting 8.2 million Chinese visitors next year. This comes as predictions for overall foreign arrivals next year have been down-scaled, amid concerns over a sluggish global economy.

Kasem Prunratanamala, who leads research at CGS-CIMB Securities in Thailand, stated that while the firm has kept its estimation of 27 million arrivals for this year, the prediction for next year has been reduced from 36 million to 32 million. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)’s governor said on Tuesday that Chinese airlines simply chose to return the extra time slots allocated to them.

Thai government to construct new elevated tollways by 2028

The Thai Transport Ministry unveiled plans to construct two new elevated tollways to improve commuting in the country. These tollways will be built from Pathum Thani to Ayutthaya and from Nonthaburi to western Bangkok, with a combined estimated cost of 87 billion baht.
