Lantao is on the road to recovery. The little long-tailed macaque had an open fracture in her right arm and was severely traumatized when found on the Thai island of Ko Lanta. At the time of her rescue, the baby monkey was blind in one eye and also severely malnourished.

PM2.5 levels exceed safety standard in all of Bangkok

The air quality in all 50 districts of Bangkok was categorized as “orange”, or starting to affect health, this morning, the Air Quality Information Center of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said.

The center reported the average PM2.5 levels throughout the city at 51.2 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), in excess of the country’s standard of 37.5 µg/m³ over a three-hour average (5am to 7am). Continued …

Areas in two Chiang Mai districts where wildfires have been burning for the past two weeks have been declared disaster zones, as local authorities battle to bring the fires under control.

Chiang Mai Gov. Nirat Phongsittithaworn announced yesterday that five subdistricts in Chiang Dao and Omkoi districts were designated disaster areas where emergency relief measures and wildfire monitoring were being stepped up. Thailand’s annual crop-burning season causes air pollution lethal enough to prematurely kill 34,000 people every year but the solution lies in another agricultural element: plants. Rice farmers to receive 1,000-baht incentive to plant other crops

The final draft of incentives to encourage farmers to plant other crops will soon be sent to the National Rice Policy and Management Committee (NRPMC) for approval, a well-informed source from the Commerce Ministry has said.

The Kasikorn Research Center (KResearch) has downgraded its Thai economic projection for 2024 to a growth of 2.8 %, from its previous forecast of 3.1 % issued in December.

Burin Adulwattana, managing director and chief economist of KResearch, said, “The global economy in 2024 is expected to grow at the same level as was seen in 2023. Global trade is likely to resume growth while global interest rates will gradually decline as inflation falls to the target level set by central banks worldwide. Wage committee unlikely to raise Thai minimum wage to 400 baht

An anticipated meeting of the tripartite wage committee later this month is expected to sanction a second increase in the minimum daily wage for this year. However, the Employers’ Confederation of Thai Trade and Industry (EconThai) suggests the approved hike is unlikely to take the wage to the 400 baht mark.

According to Thanit Sorat, the vice-chair of EconThai, the committee, comprised of government representatives, employers, and employees, will convene on March 26. Two women found shot dead at property in Hua Hin

Police are currently investigating the deaths of two women found shot at a property in Hua Hin. The deceased, identified as a 63-year-old businesswoman and her 46-year-old secretary, were discovered on Sunday by the son of the older woman, after he grew concerned over his inability to contact his mother for several days.

Traveling from Bangkok to Hua Hin, he arrived at his mother’s home to find it securely locked, with the air conditioning still running. Upon entering the house through a back window, he was met with a foul smell, prompting him to alert local authorities. Continued …

Anthrax outbreak in Laos prompts raw meat warning in Thailand

Kenika Ounjit, a deputy government spokesperson, yesterday revealed a public health warning from the Department of Livestock Development. The warning urged the public to refrain from consuming raw meat. This follows a report of an anthrax outbreak in Laos.

According to the report, three cases of anthrax were identified on March 4 in the Soukhoumma district of the Lao province of Champasak. This province shares a border with Thailand’s eastern Ubon Ratchathani province, raising concerns for potential cross-border transmission, said Kenika, highlighting raw beef, buffalo, goat, and sheep meat as potential carriers of the bacterium. Hazardous smog in 48 provinces

Forty-eight provinces were blanketed with hazardous levels of PM2.5 on Monday morning and 11 provinces, mostly in the north, faced red levels of pollution, with Chiang Mai suffering the most.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency reported at 10am on Monday that the highest level of particulate matter, 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), was detected in the northern province of Chiang Mai, at 125.3 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Boy, 14, arrested for shooting death of teen in Hua Hin

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested following the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old in downtown Hua Hin last Thursday evening. Hua Hin Police Station launched an investigation into the incident, which happened on Naresdamri close to the entrance to Hua Hin Fishing Pier.

The shooting not only claimed the life of the young victim, known as “Nong Din,” but also left his 16-year-old friend seriously injured after being caught in the gunfire. Continued …

Frequent use of mosquito spray urged as dengue death toll rises

In a warning against the spread of dengue fever, the Public Health Ministry has urged people to protect themselves by using anti-mosquito sprays and lotions.

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said on Sunday that at the latest meeting of the National Communicable Disease Control committee, he learned that the number of dengue patients this year has risen to 17,783 cases, more than double the number compared to the same period last year. Alarm sounded for tainted fruit, vegetable imports

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) is calling on the government to examine fruit and vegetables purchased from neighboring countries and China more carefully after pesticide contamination was discovered in some imports of farm produce.

Someone is poisoning Rayong’s dogs, 36 dead so far

Three dog owners in Rayong’s Nikhom Phatthana district have asked police to take action against those responsible for poisoning their pets in separate incidents, resulting in the deaths of 36 animals. Somjit Palapol, a durian farmer, claims that his 19 dogs were poisoned on March 6, 17 of which died.

He said that he raised his dogs with love and best care, but they were killed by poison-laced food. ‘I am speechless and broken-hearted. I have already filed a complaint with the police, as the killings violate the law,’ he said. Continued …

Thai citizens view corruption within the civil service sector as motivated by greed more than any other reason, a new NIDA poll published on Sunday revealed.

Despite increased spending by tourists and tax incentives to encourage buying, Thailand’s retail sector is under strain. The sector, facing the challenges of a surge of substandard goods from China, is burdening local entrepreneurs.

Thai Retailers Assn. Vice President Chatchai Tuongratanaphan predicts a growth of only 1%-2% in the retail sector for the first half of the year. Majority of 12,000 Thais in Dubai are working illegally

Most of the 12,000 Thais employed in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates are illegal workers who were lured with promises of high pay. There are only about 4,500 who are fully and correctly documented.

Nipa Nirannoot, the Thai consul-general in Dubai, said many Thai women have been lured to work in massage parlors, but end up being forced into prostitution. Bangkok’s eastern and central bus terminals set for relocation

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit announced plans on Tuesday to move the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) and the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Mo Chit 2) to the Krung Thep Abhiwat Central Terminal. The intention behind the move is to offer more convenience to travelers, as the Central Terminal can be easily reached using the MRT electronic rail system.

Black panther spotted in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park

A black panther sighting near Phanoen Thung in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park has been reported by the Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP). Thailand welcomed 5,981,234 overseas visitors between Jan. 1 and Feb. 25, Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol announced on Tuesday. She added that these visitors have generated revenue of around 290.92 billion baht for Thai entrepreneurs.

Chiang Mai tops world’s most polluted cities due to rampant forest fires

Chiang Mai has been blanketed by worsening haze, catapulting it to the top of the list of the world’s 10 most polluted cities. The thick smog is a direct consequence of forest fires that have been burning unabated for approximately two weeks.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) detected a total of 1,420 hotspots on Monday alone. Of these, 193 were located in Chiang Mai. Satellite information revealed that the hotspots were distributed across various areas, with 490 in forest conservation zones, 375 in forest reserve areas, 237 in agricultural regions, 186 in land reform areas, and the remaining in community areas. Chiang Mai national park calls for troops to help fight forest fire

With forest fires raging for more than a week, Chiang Mai’s Ob Luang National Park officials have decided to turn to troops from the Third Army Area for help. So far, more than 33,000 rai (5,280 hectares) of forested land in the national park has been destroyed.

Kritsayam Kongsatree, director of the 16th protected zones administration office, said park officials had tried but failed to put out the fires raging for more than a week, mainly because local villagers set them off to harvest wild plants or hunt animals. A power bank exploded on an AirAsia flight mid-air, sending passengers into panic. The plane was flying from Bangkok to Nakhon Si Thammarat in the south of the country when flames and smoke were seen.

7-Eleven in Thailand Reports Record Income of 399 Billion Baht, plans expansion

CP All has revealed business profit results for 2023 for 7-Eleven, in which the convenience stores had an overall income of 399 billion baht, having a gross profit of 112 billion baht and increasing from the previous year by 16.1%.

CP All stated the increasing profit and income was from an increase in average sales of 5.5%, or 80,837 baht daily on average in each 7-11. It was reported that each customer spent 83 baht on average per bill and each store had 965 customers daily on average. Continued …

Songkran forecast: Domestic tourism surge dampened by trickle of foreign arrivals

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) expects to see 13.5 billion baht in revenue from domestic tourism during the Songkran holidays (April 13-16), up 22% from 11 billion baht last year.

However, it is far less optimistic about foreign arrivals over the traditional New Year.

The tourism agency estimates Thais will make up to 3.8 million trips to domestic attractions this Songkran, a rise of 14% from the 3.34 million trips made last year. Continued …

Songkran spending to surge to Bt125 billion

Spending sentiment for the upcoming Songkran festival is expected to be lively as people have been hesitant for many months, but the country’s economy is showing signs of recovery, driven by rapidly reviving tourism.

According to the latest survey conducted by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC), spending during the festival is expected to increase by 17.3% to 125 billion baht, up from 107 billion in 2022. Continued …

Over 14,200 flights, 2.37 million passengers expected at 6 airports during Songkran week

As many as 14,220 flights are expected to be operated at six airports during the Songkran festival from April 11 to 17 this year, 59.6% higher than in the previous year, Airports of Thailand (AOT) said on Tuesday.

AOT runs Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang (Chiang Rai), Phuket and Hat Yai airports.

More than 90,000 Tourists to Visit Surat Thani, Samui Island During Songkran

More than 67,000 foreign tourists, and 23,000 Thai tourists are expected to visit Surat Thani, including Samui Island, during the Songkran Festival period.

Surat Thani Gov.Vichawut Jintoe said from April 13 to April 16 the tourism authority is expecting to welcome 91,000 tourists.

Of those, 23,000 will be Thai tourists, while 60,000 will be foreign tourists. Continued …

The Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) has announced that it is waiving toll fees for three expressways on Thursday to mark Chakri Memorial Day.

Maldivian tourist caught smuggling 25 live birds

Officials at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok caught a tourist attempting to smuggle 25 exotic live birds out of Thailand on a flight to the Maldives yesterday morning.

Customs officials made the discovery when they inspected luggage destined to board flight PG711 to Malé in the Maldives, reported Prasert Sornsathapornkul, the director of the Division for the Protection of Wildlife and Wild Plants under the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. Australian Resort Boss Murdered While at Work in Krabi

A 57-year-old Australian resort boss was killed by the husband of one of his employees who was apparently upset about her pay at a resort in Krabi.

The Ao Nang Police tsaid they were notified by the Krabi Hospital that a foreign man had been pronounced dead yesterday morning. Multiple stab and slash wounds were found on his body, said Ao Nang police. Continued …

Phuket Airport gains new direct flights to Vietnam and China

Phuket International Airport in southern Thailand is gaining two new direct flights to China and Vietnam. The first is to Chongqing in China operated by Chongqing Airlines and the second is the first-ever service from Phuket to Hanoi in Vietnam serviced by VietJet.

Chongqing Airlines’ inaugural flight OQ2093 landed on the runway in Phuket yesterday afternoon with 128 tourists on board. Tourists were welcomed with gifts from Airports of Thailand (AOT) staff. Continued …

Inflation up 2.83% in March, slowest pace in 15 months

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) rose a less than forecast 2.83% in March from a year earlier, the slowest pace in 15 months due to lower energy and food prices, the Commerce Ministry said.

The reading compared with a forecast rise of 3.3% in March in a Reuters poll. The core CPI index was up 1.75% in March from a year ago, versus a forecast increase of 1.82%. Continued …

Exports expected to decline in first half

The Thai export sector faces a spate of challenges in 2023, with a trade group forecasting that shipments may decline by as much as 7.4% in the first half of the year.

Chinese trio facing prospect of execution for a horrific murder in Thailand

Three men accused of the sadistic torture and murder of Chinese student Jin Can are in the custody of Chinese police after being arrested in the last 24 hours in Wuhan, China, according to Thai National Police Chief Damrongsak Kittiprapas. On Tuesday, he confirmed that the suspects would not be extradited to Thailand but would face a joint investigation and trial before a Chinese court, with the prospect of them facing the death penalty or execution for the outrage they committed in Thailand.

Hua Hin now has twice-daily bus service to Pattaya, starting Feb. 19. The bus leaves Hua Hin at 9am and 3pm, and departs from Pattaya at 8am and 4pm. Tickets are 473 THB.
