A canal journey into Bangkok’s quiet soul

For much of its history, Bangkok was less a city of roads than a city of water. Canals once carried not only goods and people but habits of life — how neighbors greeted one another, how monks moved between temples, how food and ideas circulated. Long before expressways and sky trains defined the urban rhythm, water was the city’s infrastructure.

That earlier tempo is what the Tourism Authority of Thailand, working with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and cultural partners, is trying to recover with a new route called Lad Lor Long Krung — “Explore Bangkok Through the City’s Historic Waterways.” Continued …

Foreigners rush to buy Phuket villas on long-term leases

Thailand’s property market is witnessing a real estate revolution, as foreigners snap up houses on long-term leases instead of just condominiums. This trend, particularly in tourist hotspots like Phuket, Chon Buri, and Surat Thani, has been booming since Thailand reopened its borders in 2021.

According to Wichai Wiratkaphan, an independent scholar in urban development and housing, the leasehold market for villas has seen explosive growth, especially in Phuket, where between 2022 and 2023, 90% of long-term lease contracts for single-family homes were signed by foreign buyers. High Airfares in Thailand Set to Stay as Demand Stays High

Travelers in Thailand can expect air ticket prices to remain elevated this year, despite hopes for more affordable travel. Key factors among major airlines — including airport fees, ground handling charges, and an ongoing supply chain disruption — are driving a steady or slightly increasing airfare trend.

Asia Aviation, which holds a majority stake in Thai AirAsia, noted that the airline saw a surge in revenue due to higher airfares in 2024, totaling 49.4 billion baht from sales and services — a 20% increase from the previous year. The airline reports that costs tied to airport operations and strong public demand for travel are impacting ticket pricing. Thai AirAsia’s fares could potentially increase by up to 10% this year. Thai Airways Bans Power Bank Charging on Flights from March 1

In response to a recent fire incident aboard a Korean Air flight, airlines worldwide, including Thai Airways, are prohibiting the usage and charging of power banks during flights starting March 1. This decision follows an explosion linked to a faulty power bank that sparked significant safety concerns.

Leading the charge, South Korean airlines — such as Korean Air and Asiana Airlines — have enacted stringent guidelines. While passengers may still carry power banks onboard in their hand luggage, any mid-flight charging or usage is strictly forbidden. These devices, typically powered by lithium-ion batteries, pose a severe fire hazard if mishandled, particularly due to air pressure shifts causing thermal reactions during flights. Continued …

This Thai food can cause serious kidney problems and cancer

Everyone loves delicious food, but sometimes our favourite dishes can be harmful to our health if we eat too much of them. Processed foods, especially meats like sausages, are popular in Thailand, but eating them too often can lead to serious health issues, such as kidney disease and cancer.

Processed meats, like sausages, are convenient and tasty, but they can be harmful if consumed regularly. They often contain high levels of sodium (salt), phosphorus, and preservatives. These substances put extra stress on our organs, especially the kidneys, and can lead to severe health issues over time. Continued …

Compact, convenient and functional, 7-Eleven seems to be a successful concept that caters to the needs of both travelers and locals alike, especially in places where general trade is not really a pervasive presence. Thailand’s Consumer Outlook: Stable Medium-Term Prospects Despite Short-Term Political Challenges

Total household spending growth in Thailand will be moderate but positive in 2025. Although easing inflationary pressures and a stable labor market will form the base for stable consumer spending, high-frequency data indicate that the trajectories for consumer confidence and retail sales growth will continue to be sluggish, as political instability continues to cast uncertainty on the economic climate.

Real household spending (calculated at 2010 prices) is projected to grow by 4.0% y-o-y, accelerating from the 3.5% estimated for 2024, as consumer spending continues to stabilize with the volatility witnessed from 2020 to 2023, induced by Covid-19 lockdowns and a subsequent recovery subsiding. Thai car market suffering sales slump

Thailand’s auto market has been sluggish this year, with October sales hitting just 37,691 units – the lowest monthly figure in over four years. This decline has been attributed to several factors, including a slow economic recovery and increasingly stringent credit policies from financial institutions dampening consumer purchasing power.

Thawatchai Jungsanguanpornsuk, managing director of Phranakorn Automotive Co., said that loan rejection rates have surged to 70%, particularly impacting pickup trucks, like single-cab and extended-cab models. Strict credit policies have also been exacerbated by falling second-hand car prices leading to a noticeable downturn in the auto market. Continued …
