Lessons from Bangkok’s Nightlife Economy

The 2026 annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank that ended last week in Bangkok may have come and gone, but the lessons for economic development remain relevant.

Besides the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, an iconic building that first strikes you not just with its architectural design, but also with its size, as it hosted more than 15,000 participants from 191 countries around the world, the warmth and hospitality of the Thai people, another striking takeaway was Bangkok’s flourishing nightlife economy. Thailand’s FDI reaches 271 billion baht as high-tech projects expand

Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Thailand reached 971 projects in the first nine months of this year, a 26% year-on-year increase, with a combined value of more than 271 billion baht. The approved projects covered engineering and technical services, industrial parts manufacturing, goods distribution, machinery services, energy and electric vehicles.

Of these, 494 of the approved FDI projects were supported by investment promotion programs for high-tech industries under the Board of Investment (BOI). These projects included those in digital technology, artificial intelligence (AI), electric vehicles, clean energy, agriculture and food processing. Continued …

What factors caused Thai banks’ 10% profit decline in Q3 2026?

The Thai banking industry experienced a nearly 10% year-on-year decline in net profit during the third quarter of 2026. This downturn was primarily driven by lower interest income and the implementation of financial assistance measures designed to reduce financing costs for customers.

The decline was particularly notable among major banks, such as Kasikornbank, which saw profits fall by 12.2%, and Krungthai Bank, which reported a 9.3% decrease. These financial assistance efforts were part of broader measures to support economic recovery and help customers manage their costs. Additionally, the sector faces ongoing pressure from elevated non-performing loans and sluggish loan growth, which analysts suggest could lead to a deteriorating industry outlook. – Bangkok Post AI

Thailand targeting SME export growth

Thailand is targeting SME export growth to improve the country’s international competitiveness and mitigate the impact of weak domestic economic growth. The government aims to expand export opportunities for these smaller enterprises by enhancing their access to digital trade, international markets, and financing.

By focusing on SMEs, which account for approximately 14% of Thailand’s total export value, the nation seeks to create more added-value production and reduce reliance on imported raw materials and components. Additionally, strategic initiatives like the Stock Exchange of Thailand’s efforts to help SMEs expand overseas aim to bolster business resilience against mounting global risks and geopolitical uncertainties. – Bangkok Post AI

Thailand targets global cannabis, hemp and kratom market

Thailand is seeking to strengthen its position in Asia’s cannabis, hemp and kratom industries by raising medical, cultivation and production standards, while expanding research and higher-value processing.

Industry figures and government officials say the next phase of growth will depend less on production volume and more on scientific evidence, product safety, internationally recognized standards and clear regulation. Continued …

Young Thais favor value and energy savings over large homes

Younger Thais planning to build homes are placing greater importance on practical space, energy efficiency and long-term running costs than on large properties designed to display social status, according to the Home Builder Assn. (HBA).

Anantakorn Amornwatee, president of the HBA, said younger consumers and families starting out increasingly wanted homes suited to the number of occupants, with useful layouts, straightforward maintenance and manageable expenses after moving in. Continued …

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has proposed using 3.5 billion baht in borrowed funds to subsidize domestic travel for 200,000 Thai tourists in 2027, offering accommodation support and digital spending vouchers under Thai Teaw Thai Plus.

The proposed scheme would provide one million accommodation entitlements, with five allocated to each participant. Public registration is planned for January–February 2027, followed by travel between March and June. Continued …

French protests fail to dent Thailand demand as bookings rise 30.5%

Political and social unrest in France has so far had no significant impact on French travel demand for Thailand, with forward bookings for the coming winter season up 30.5%, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Chiravadee Khunsub, TAT deputy governor for international marketing – Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Africa, said the agency’s offices in France had detected no meaningful decline in bookings or cancellations of flights or accommodation following the recent protests. Continued …

Who Qualifies for Free Fast Track Immigration at Thai Airports

Siam Legal International has released a guide to airport fast-track immigration, a priority lane that many travelers can access without a first or business class ticket. The guide sets out which groups already qualify for free, how other travelers can book the service, and how two long-stay visas include it as a built-in benefit.

Fast track is a priority immigration lane with a much shorter queue than the regular counters. Travelers can reach it in two ways. Some can walk straight to the lane, while everyone else can pay a private service to escort them there, with some services also helping with baggage, customs, and departure. Continued …

4 Thailand Getaways to Visit This Winter Beyond Bangkok and Phuket

Thailand remains a favorite winter destination for travelers, thanks to its tropical beaches, lively markets, rich cultural heritage and relatively easygoing holiday options. But as the peak travel season approaches, popular spots such as Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya can get busy, particularly around Christmas and New Year.

For travelers who would rather explore at a slower pace, Thailand has plenty of alternatives beyond its best-known tourist hubs. Think mist-covered mountain viewpoints in the north, old wooden shophouses beside the Mekong River, and quieter stretches of coastline where days revolve around nature rather than nightlife. Climate Change Forces Tourism Reset Across Asia, as Thailand and More Expand Year-Round Travel

The established leisure travel schedule systems in the Asia-Pacific region are undergoing a complete transformation owing to the increasing climatic instability and heat waves, coupled with enhanced monsoon activity, which has led to the breaking down of traditional systems.

As opposed to sporadic marketing campaigns, there is an emerging paradigm of deseasonalization of the region by the government in its true sense. The approach that is being followed is similar to the ones adopted in northern Europe, where multilateral routes, climate-proof civil structures, and yield-maximizing shoulder programs have been employed. Thai ‘Rental Wives’ Serve Older Western Men, Vietnam Media Says

In a case of the pot calling the kettle black, Vietnamese media outlets have claimed Thai women are hired as “rental wives” by retired Western men, particularly in tourist centers including Pattaya. However, the reports provide no official figures, named providers or evidence that such arrangements are a recognized or widespread practice in Thailand.

The claims appeared in Vietnamese newspaper Tien Phong, which cited Chinese outlets Sina and Sohu. According to the reports, foreign visitors may pay Thai women to act as guides, partners and, in many cases, sexual companions. Continued …

The Department of Disease Control said this variant, also called “Nimbus” and is a branch of the JN.1, has a mutation in the spike protein that allows it to evade immunity and spread more easily, but there is still no evidence of it causing more severe illness. Continued …

Russian condo purchases surge 75.9%, while wider foreign market slows

Phuket Israeli arrivals rise 52% as new flights planned

Phuket recorded a 52.5% year-on-year increase in Israeli visitors in July, with arrivals from Israel also up 1,205% on pre-Covid July 2019 levels, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Phuket office.

While total visitor numbers were slightly lower over the first seven months of 2026, tourism income remained comparatively steady. Phuket residents urge cut to Israeli tourists’ visit to maximum 15 days

Around 200 to 300 Phuket residents yesterday aired their bad experiences at the hands of foreign tourists at Loma Park, Patong Beach, and demanded the government restrict Israeli tourists to a maximum 15-day stay to prevent them from engaging in illegal businesses. The forum, entitled “Save Phuket, Save Patong, Respect Thai Law”, was tightly controlled, with numerous uniformed and plainclothes policemen watching over it.

Among those attending were tourism operators, including hotel owners, tuk-tuk drivers, tour guides and Phuket residents who said they were frustrated with the behavior of foreign tourists, particularly those from Israel. They want relevant agencies to convey their concerns to the government and find a solution to this tourist problem. Continued …

From canals to city streets: The story of Thai boat noodles

Few Thai dishes are as instantly recognizable as kuay tiew ruea, or boat noodles — a humble bowl of noodles known for its dark, aromatic broth, bold seasoning and small serving size. The dish has long been associated with Thailand’s waterways.

Its name comes from the vendors who once sold noodles from small boats along canals, serving customers from the water. What makes boat noodles different is not only the portion but also the intensely flavored broth. The soup is typically dark and savory, with a complex mix of herbs and spices. Depending on the recipe, it may contain pork or beef, along with meatballs, liver and other toppings. Continued …
