Attracting a lot of attention in Thailand is Laos’ #SaveLaoKip campaign to protect their currency, with Laotian shopkeepers no longer accepting both Thai baht and other foreign currencies but, if necessary, they will give the foreigners a lower rate than that officially set.
Many shops in Laos have kicked off this campaign to only trade in their currency kip and not accept Thai baht. An example is one shop announcing that they will not accept any foreign currencies, with those coming in with Thai currency only getting 30,000 kip for 100 baht. The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) announced a public consultation from yesterday until July 26 to discuss the final electricity tariff adjustment of the year. The proposed adjustments could see electricity bills rise from September to December this year, with costs potentially increasing from 4.18 baht per unit to between 4.65 and 6.01 baht per unit.
The secretary-general and spokesperson of the ERC, Poonpat Leesombatpiboon, revealed that the fuel tariff (FT) might need to be adjusted upwards by 46.8 to 182.9 satang per unit, combined with the base electricity rate of 3.7 baht per unit. Consumer confidence slips again in June
Thai consumer confidence dropped for a fourth straight month in June, falling to its lowest level since October last year on concerns over a global slowdown and political uncertainty, according to a survey carried out by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC).

Thailand on track to upgrade third-class trains with air-con and seats
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) plans to improve the service and facilities of its third-class trains by spending 780 million baht on new seats and air conditioning. For the first phase, 130 third-class carriages will be equipped with air conditioning by next year.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has mandated that individuals possessing between six and 100 SIM cards must verify their identities at mobile operators’ service centers by tomorrow, July 11, or face restrictions on outgoing calls and text messages.
Out of a total of 3,981,251 SIM cards, 1,635,407 had their identities verified as of yesterday, leaving over 2.3 million cardholders to complete the verification process by the deadline. The ongoing public hearings organized by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) over a plan to declare 265,286 rai of land in Thap Lan National Park as no longer being protected forest land – paving the way for these parts of the park to be used for agricultural purposes – have sparked heated debate.
While a number of the villagers – who began occupying parts of the park before the boundary of Thap Lan National Park was declared – support the separation of the 265,286 rai, many conservationists and other members of the public disagree with the plan, approved by the cabinet on March 14 of last year. People in Koh Nang Yuan, a famous tourist island in southern Thailand, have maintained the habit of limiting the use of plastic items for many years, especially single-use products. Tourists are also required to do the same to retain the island’s natural environment and protect the coral reef.

More signals surfaced last week indicating Thailand is likely to reverse course on cannabis by shutting down a combined legal CBD and marijuana market projected to reach billions in value. A key drug committee passed a resolution that would limit products made from flowers of both marijuana and industrial hemp to medical applications that require a doctor’s prescription.
The country famously joined a trend toward 1.0% THC by dry weight allowable in hemp crops in 2019, setting a separate limit of 0.2% for food and cosmetics products. More than 260 people have registered for assistance following the Yaowarat fire on Saturday night in Bangkok’s Chinatown, most of them migrant workers, according to the permanent secretary for human security.

More signals surfaced last week indicating Thailand is likely to reverse course on cannabis by shutting down a combined legal CBD and marijuana market projected to reach billions in value. A key drug committee passed a resolution that would limit products made from flowers of both marijuana and industrial hemp to medical applications that require a doctor’s prescription.
The country famously joined a trend toward 1.0% THC by dry weight allowable in hemp crops in 2019, setting a separate limit of 0.2% for food and cosmetics products. Thailand reported a month-on-month drop in inflation in June to 0.62 %, compared to 1.54% in May, a decline attributed to the end of the low base impact of electricity costs from the previous month, Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), said on Friday. Thailand faces a significant surge in COVID-19 cases, with infections expected to peak in July, according to Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, chief of Thailand’s Disease Control Department. The country reported 3,256 hospital admissions and 16 fatalities between June 23-29, highlighting an alarming rise in cases.

A new international train service connecting Bangkok and Vientiane in Laos will begin services on July 19, the State Railway of Thailand announced on Wednesday.

The Thai property sector will face challenges in meeting sales targets this year due to a decline in demand and purchasing power, Thai Condominium Assn. President Prasert Taedullayasatit said on Tuesday.
He referred to the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and its impact on property prices, as financial institutions and asset management companies turned to offering non-performing assets at cheaper rates than the original sale prices. “The reason behind the decline in property prices during the Tom Yum Kung crisis was a weakening baht that triggered an increase in the debt burden among business entrepreneurs and banks,” he said. The World Bank has advised the Thai government to boost investment in reviving aging infrastructure and strengthening the green economy, to help drive the country’s economic potential beyond 2.7% growth in the medium term.
The bank forecasts Thai GDP growth of 2.4% in 2024 and 2.8% in 2025.
