Thailand Weighs Crypto Payment Zones for Tourists in Phuket, Hua Hin

Cryptocurrency experts support the government’s idea of investigating the use of Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies for payments in tourist destinations such as Hua Hin or Phuket.

They see this as a positive move that will encourage a more systematic approach to the use of cryptocurrencies and make it easier for foreigners to spend large sums of money, for example when buying condos or houses, without having to carry large amounts of cash. Thailand is seen as ripe for this move, with examples from over a hundred countries that have designated certain cities for cryptocurrency use, including in the U.S., Switzerland, Argentina and Dubai. Farmers begin burning crops as annual pollution starts in Thailand

Air pollution soared as rogue farmers began their annual crop burning in Thailand. Thick smoke drifted from burning rice fields and shrouded buildings and roads in northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima province on Dec. 17. Dr. Taweechai Wisanuyothin, director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Control Region 9, said: “Smoke from industrial factories and power plants, vehicle exhaust, and open burning contribute to PM 2.5 fine dust. Is Bangkok air good to breathe?

Bangkok, the bustling capital of Thailand, is frequently grappling with air pollution, which has become a growing concern for both residents and visitors. The city’s air quality often reaches levels considered hazardous to health, especially during the cooler months from November to February, when temperature inversions trap pollutants close to the ground.

The primary contributors to air pollution in Bangkok are vehicle emissions, industrial activities, and open burning of agricultural waste, particularly during the annual burning season in neighboring regions. Traffic congestion is a significant factor, with thousands of vehicles on the road, emitting exhaust fumes that contribute to the high levels of particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the air. Kui Buri Model for peaceful co-existence of humans and wild elephants

Attapong Pao-on, chief of the Kui Buri National Park, revealed that pushing wild elephants back into the forest zone was a key approach to reducing damage to properties and crops. Implementation, however, is by no means easy.

Discouraging wild elephants to not invade people’s farmlands involves many risks and challenges. It is necessary to lay down structure and delegate duties for smooth operations, which focus on the effectiveness and efficiency of wild elephant monitoring, as well as the safety of the staff involved. The safety of wild-elephant monitoring teams’ members, in particular, receives a strong emphasis because they directly face straying giant mammals. Continued …

The president of ATTA, Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, voiced caution over meeting the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) goal of attracting 9 million Chinese visitors by 2025. He cites a mix of global geopolitical tensions and China’s internal economic strains as key obstacles to substantial growth. Continued …

Upgrade of Hua Hin Airport to continue next year

Transport Deputy Minister Manaporn Charoensri said on Saturday the ministry had ordered the Department of Airports, the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, and other agencies to develop Hua Hin’s operations, including acquiring a certificate to operate it as an international airport.

Danai Ruangsorn, director-general of the Department of Airports (DoA), said the development plan for Hua Hin Airport consists of two major projects. The first, expanding the runway, has been completed. The second, work on related infrastructure aspects of the airport, such as the runway tunnel over the highway, still need 300 billion baht and budget approval. Continued …

“It will be the end of Hua Hin as a laid back beach town resort. Tourist operators from China, India and Russia will promote Hua Hin as a place to have a vacation.”

“Heard this rubbish for years and they cannot even get a single service yet from Singapore or KL . And, of course, if you noticed the traffic congestion already in peak season, and the new train station, the road system will also need upgrades. Have they planned for that?”

“Economically it would be good for Hua Hin, but it would be sad to see it become another Pattaya or Phuket.”

“I have been hearing this every year for the past 10 years, or more. Upgrading the airport without the surrounding areas will be a disaster. The center is already gridlocked at weekends. It will also signal the death knell for H.H. as a relaxing holiday town, another one bites the dust in the relentless grab for money and profits. Sadly, it will join the ranks of Pattaya, Phuket, Samui, as a place to avoid.”

“I will only believe it when I see it happen. Air Asia has been interested in using Hua Hin as a regional hub for years now, and all they have ever gotten is Neanderthal-style foot dragging from the officials here. Hua Hin Airport is one of the least utilized airports in Thailand, possibly even in the world. Shame on these guys. They can do so much better. Thailand desperately needs more regional airports, especially within a few hours of Bangkok. Anything to ease congestion, and save souls from the nightmare of getting in and out of Bangkok has to be a good thing for the nation and it’s people.”

“Cha Am Beach is invaded every weekend with people from BK. You can’t get near it on the weekends. Hua Hin is filling up with people from BK, plus Chinese tour buses are all over the place at present, The airport might make it worse.”

“I hope it never happens. And it won’t happen if the airlines don’t see a profit. Too small and not enough interest dooms this idea yet again. Good.”

“So, where will they fly to and from internationally? Apparently, they couldn’t even find enough passengers for the domestic routes they’ve tried over the years.”

Researchers in Thailand are exploring the science behind herbal compresses

The scent of fragrant lemongrass mingles with earthy ginger and tangy tamarind, punctuated by the sharp, menthol-like aroma of camphor. It’s a familiar smell for spa-goers: a traditional Thai herbal compress. The treatment combines herbs in a cotton cloth, which is wrapped into a compact ball and steamed for around 10 minutes before the practitioner applies it to the body, typically after a massage.

Herbal compresses have been used for centuries for muscle aches, joint pain, and to reduce inflammation. It is beyond my comprehension that the non-performing loan (NPL) level rose 14.1% in Q3 while the economy expanded 3.0%. Shouldn’t it be the opposite when debtor’s income rises? Continued …

For those who travel to eat, meals while away from home are precious. A marquee meal can be the most memorable highlight of a trip, and when you only get so many per day with no do-overs, there is literally no room for mediocre food. And even harder to stomach is when it’s expensive, inauthentic, or — even worse, in a world with such diverse cuisine — boring. In other words, a tourist trap restaurant.

According to a study by online passport photo service provider PhotoAiD, the top three criteria that make a place a tourist trap are above-average pricing, amenities tailored for tourists, and a lack of cultural authenticity. Continued …

What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Thailand

I first visited Thailand a few years ago – a month of solo travel to avoid the rainy British winter. My first stop, Bangkok. I ate deep fried insects at Khao San Road and visited Siriraj Medical Museum, which exhibits grisly medical specimens in a decidedly maximalist fashion. I traveled south to visit a few of Thailand’s islands with a friend, then north to Chiang Mai and the small mountain town of Pai, which is popular with backpackers.

Last year I returned to Thailand on a hiking and kayaking trip, and visited the south of the country. We went to Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, a vast lake in the heart of Khao Sok National Park, where narrow karst islands jut out from the turquoise water. We spent the night in a floating bungalow, soaking up the tranquility and jumping into kayaks whenever we wanted to explore. Continued …

Microsoft unveils closed-loop liquid cooling design for data centers

Tech-giant Microsoft announced on Monday that it will start its “zero-water evaporated” liquid cooling systems operations for data centers in 2026. The design is said to optimize AI workloads and consume zero water with the use of a closed-loop design.

(Editor: Thailand is poised to be a leading center for data centers in Southeast Asia, posing concerns about water use in a country consistently battling drought conditions.)

Data centers rely heavily on water to remove heat from data halls containing servers and other IT equipment. A substantial amount of water evaporates as part of the cooling process and must be constantly replaced. According to a NPR 2024 report, data centers use around “300,000 gallons of water a day to keep cool, roughly equivalent to water use in 100,000 homes.” Continued …
