Thailand braces for cold snap, heavy rains

A sudden drop in temperature by up to 6 degrees Celsius and strong winds have been forecast across multiple regions in Thailand, with Bangkok experiencing a 4 degree Celsius decrease.

The northeastern part of Thailand is bracing for cold to very cold weather conditions, accompanied by gusty winds, leading to temperature reductions of 4 to 6 degrees Celsius. The central region, including Bangkok and its vicinity, as well as the eastern part, are also expected to experience cooler climates, with a 1 to 4 degrees Celsius dip in temperature. Continued … 

Thai boy, 8, to cross Gulf of Thailand on a kite foil from Pattaya to Hua Hin

Thanawat “Shane” Promwen, 8 years old, started his adventure across the Gulf of Thailand this morning, embarking on a journey of 110 kilometers (70 miles) from Pattaya to Pak Nam Pran, in the Hua Hin area, setting the record for being the youngest child ever to achieve this goal. by crossing with kite foil.

Shane has been making waves in the kite and wing foilling world since the age of 3, and his latest adventure marks a big step forward. In preparation for international competition in 2024. At present, he is too young to compete and has to rely on special invitations to participate in adult competitions.

Shane’s trip will start from Pattaya Club Lung Chat at Na Jomtien Beach. and will end at Prince Chumphon Shrine Beach At Pak Nam Pran, 30 kilometers south of Hua Hin.

Green plankton bloom mars Hua Hin beaches

Hua Hin Beach is currently witnessing a “plankton bloom.” This phenomenon has turned the sea from the Tubtim shrine right along the beach toward Khao Takiab, a green color.

Bangkok region hit by unsafe levels of PM2.5 smog again

Air quality in Bangkok and surrounding areas was still poor on Tuesday, with levels of PM2.5 pollution exceeding the safety threshold in 68 districts in and around the capital. According to the Air Quality Management Department, the highest PM2.5 levels across the country were recorded in eastern and central provinces.

In Ayutthaya, PM2.5 levels reached 100 micrograms per cubic meter (mcg/m3), almost three times higher than the safe standard of 37.5mcg/m3. In Pathum Thani, the PM2.5 level was 97 mcg/m3, which is also considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. Continued …

Workers on garbage truck roof killed by overpass

Two garbage truck workers in Kanchanaburi were killed yesterday when their truck passed under a low bridge overpass. The incident occurred on on the motorway connecting Bang Yai and Kanchanaburi in Tambon Takramen, Amphoe Thamaka, Kanchanaburi Province.

10 days of rainfall predicted in Thailand, with lower temperatures

The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) predicted rainfall for the next 10 days, from Jan. 22-31. The TMD anticipates thunderstorms in the northern, central and upper northeastern regions, with a temperature rise expected.

From Jan. 22-26, a moderate to strong mass of cold air will spread over the northeast and the South China Sea, which will result in a southerly wind and a southeasterly wind bringing moisture from the Gulf of Thailand. This will cover the lower central region, the eastern region, Bangkok and its vicinity, and the upper southern region. The weather forecast for the next seven days, from Jan. 23-27, suggests that Thailand will experience thunderstorms and a temperature decrease of 1-4 degrees Celsius. Continued …

COVID-19 hospital admissions increase 12.9% during the past week

COVID-19 infections in Thailand are on the rise, with 718 patients being admitted to hospitals between Jan. 14-20. Of these, 11 have died, compared to four a week earlier, according to the Department of Disease Control.

Unsafe dust levels in 51 provinces

Fifty-one of the 77 provinces were shrouded with hazardous levels of ultra-fine dust on Monday morning, most of them in the central plains, the north and the northeast.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said five central plains provinces were blanketed by red (seriously hazardous) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5). Continued …

Public advised to use N95 mask as PM2.5 in Bangkok at unsafe levels

The public has been advised to wear N95 masks whenever they go outside on Sunday as air pollution in Bangkok remains high, with PM2.5 levels reaching unhealthy levels.

As of 10am on Sunday, the air quality index (AQI) in Bangkok was 187, which is classified as “unhealthy for sensitive groups”. The AQI for PM2.5, which are fine particulates that can penetrate deep into the lungs, is 118. Continued …

PM to submit dust control plan to court

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Sunday that he will submit a plan to solve the PM2.5 fine dust problem as ordered by the Chiang Mai Administrative Court within 90 days.

He said the court requires him and the national environment panel to draft a plan in 90 days following a complaint filed by a network of people in the north. Officials will be invited to discuss the matter and draft the plan as ordered by the court, he said. Continued …

A new blast of cold air is set to lower temperatures by four degrees Celsius, warns the Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD). Court orders government to form urgent plan to address PM2.5

The Administrative Court in Chiang Mai yesterday ordered Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and the National Environment Board to draw up an emergency plan within 90 days to deal with the PM2.5 pollution problem in northern provinces and to develop short- and long-term plans to deal with it.

Split-second decision saved mother’s life at Suphan Buri fireworks plant

As Thailand and the province of Suphan Buri, just to the northwest of Bangkok, mourn the deaths of 23 people in a catastrophic firework explosion, it emerged that one fortunate woman survived. Namfon Bunkom, in a tizzy, just minutes before the explosion, hastily departed the building. Her son, who normally collected money from her, had failed to turn up and was at home instead.

Namfon’s flustered decision, a near-run thing because of her commitment to work, saved her life. However, any joy or relief for the Thai woman was subdued. Afterwards, she confirmed that her mother and many of the people she knew had perished. Continued … 

500kg of explosives in storage at factory

Authorities estimate that the fireworks factory in Suphan Buri may have had at least 500 kilograms of explosive materials stored in its compound before the blast on Wednesday afternoon.

The explosion occurred at village Moo 3 in tambon Salakhao of Muang district at about 3.30pm, killing 23 workers instantly. The explosion also caused damage to four houses located about 300 meters from the factory. Continued …

Thailand halts poultry imports from Belgium, France

Thailand has suspended poultry imports from Belgium and three provinces of France in a bid to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The announcement by the Department of Livestock Development, published in the Royal Gazette on Thursday, will be in effect for nine days.

The move follows a World Organization for Animal Health report on the spread of HPAI in both countries. Question: When you look beyond traditional mainstream markets like Bangkok, Phuket and Bali, where do you see exciting things happening in real estate?

I always think it’s interesting to look within a short distance of capital areas where people are going. Khao Yai outside of Bangkok is one example where things are happening. And I think Hua Hin will continue to transform.

Hua Hin is interesting because the international school and infrastructure — the highway — have grown along with it. That’s creating a new market for people to live there full-time. It’s transforming from a holiday or retirement place into something where people want to live. Continued …

Thick haze shrouds Bangkok and vicinity this morning

Bangkok and its vicinity were shrouded in a thick haze this morning, as the amount of PM2.5 dust in the atmosphere has exceeded the standard threshold in 79 areas of the capital and 11 areas in surrounding provinces. (Hua Hin areas were in the “orange” level this morning.)

The Pollution Control Department reported today that the average level of PM2.5 in the air in the past 24 hours was measured at between 38.3-85.1µg/m³ (microns/cubic meter of air) against the standard level of 37.5µg/m³. Continued …

The cannabis industry is pushing back at Pheu Thai’s efforts to again criminalize the drug for recreational purposes. This week, Minister of Public Health Dr. Cholnan Srikaew was forced to clarify that a hard line draft bill signed by him was not final. The minister said it was a draft position prepared by his industry for the prime minister’s office.

However, the final law to be presented to parliament would, first of all, be agreed by the cabinet. Excise considers tax revisions for cigarettes

The Excise Department is considering whether a single tax rate or weight-based levy should be applied for cigarettes, says Director-general Ekniti Nitithanprapas.

Electricity price support has cost PTT Bt10.8 billion in lost revenue

Thai Tourism Agencies Get Huge Budget Boost

Led by a record 60% increase in the 2023/24 fiscal year budget of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Thai government is positioning the tourism industry as “the primary engine of economic growth” this year. However, those hopes are likely to be dashed in the event of a wider conflict in the Middle East.

A detailed analysis of the Thai budget bill, currently going through Parliament, shows that the budget allocation for the TAT is up from 3,258 million baht in fiscal year 2022/23 (beginning in October) to 5,201 million baht in fiscal year 2023/24, the largest percentage increase of any government agency. In the same period, the budget allocation for the Thai Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) is up from 637 million baht to 826 million baht and the Department of Tourism in the Ministry of Tourism and Sports up from 1,753 million baht to 1,896 million baht. Concert and music performance are the most popular Children’s Day activities, while top music artists are the individuals Thai youths are most interested to meet in person, according to a poll jointly conducted by the Ministry of Culture and Suan Dusit Poll. In Thailand, Children’s Day is observed on the second Saturday of January, which falls on Jan. 13 this year.

Chiang Mai’s war on farm fires heats up

Chiang Mai Gov. Nirat Pongsitthithavorn is leading the charge against the annual curse of PM2.5 pollution caused by the burning of agricultural residue. In a teleconference with the province’s 25 district chiefs, he laid down strict instructions to tackle the issue head-on.

A prominent virologist said this morning that a new Covid-19 strain, JN.1, has now taken hold in Thailand and is turning into the most widespread variant, as it is highly contagious, and this leading to a spike in the number of patients.

Energy board sets electricity unit price at Bt4.18

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has set the fuel tariff (FT) surcharge on electricity, for the January through April period, at 39.72 satang per unit and the electricity unit price at 4.18 baht, after adjusting the formula for the calculation of natural gas and electricity prices.

Komkrit Tantravanich, secretary-general of the office of the ERC, said today that, in setting these FT and electricity unit prices, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Thailand’s major power producer, will have to bear the loss, estimated at 15 billion baht, for the 4-month period. Thailand’s escalating smog crisis: Choking smog in 55 provinces

People in 55 of the 77 provinces were breathing dirty air this morning, with red-coded pollution levels in 20 provinces, mainly in the Central Plains.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 9am that unsafe levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) ranged from 38.7 to 113.6 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the previous 24 hours. The government-set safe threshold is 37.5µg/m³. Continued …

Bottled water contains more plastic particles than thought

A typical one-liter (33-ounce) bottle of water contains some 240,000 plastic fragments on average, according to a new study. Many of those fragments have historically gone undetected, the researchers determined, suggesting that health concerns linked to plastic pollution may be dramatically underestimated.

The peer-reviewed study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is the first to evaluate bottled water for the presence of “nanoplastics” — plastic particles under 1 micrometer in length, or one-seventieth the width of a human hair. The findings show that bottled water could contain up to 100 times more plastic particles than previously estimated, as earlier studies only accounted for microplastics, or pieces between 1 and 5,000 micrometers. Hua Hin Grab driver praised for trying to save foreigner

In an act of courage and quick thinking, an unnamed Grab rider became an unexpected hero after performing CPR on an unconscious foreigner involved in a traffic accident in Hua Hin. Despite the efforts of the Grab driver and first responders, the motorcyclist later died.

Council of State says no go-ahead for digital wallet yet

The Council of State’s secretary-general rejected claims that the government’s advisory board has given the go-ahead to legislation allowing a 500- billion-baht loan to finance the digital wallet scheme.

Thai online vendors required to file taxes from 2024

Online vendors are required to file taxes for the year 2024, with the Revenue Department mandating online platforms to disclose income data. This directive, effective from Jan. 1, applies to all businesses, including e-commerce, food and product delivery services like Shopee, Lazada, Grab, and TikTok.

These platforms, registered in Thailand and having an annual income exceeding 1 billion baht, are obligated to maintain special accounts. These accounts should display the income data of the online vendors selling goods or services on these platforms and must be submitted to the Revenue Department within 150 days from the end of the accounting period. Thailand set to surpass 2023 rice export target

Over 600,000 foreign tourists arrive in Thailand on first week of 2024

Thailand has welcomed over 600,000 foreign visitors during the first week of 2024, with the Chinese topping the list for the first week of the year. According to a report, Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, Thailand’s tourism minister, says a total of 605,537 have arrived in the kingdom in the period Jan. 1 – 7.

Zika cases reach 30 in Hua Hin and Pranburi

In response to a rising number of Zika virus cases, officials in Hua Hin and Pranburi are intensifying their prevention efforts. A meeting held yesterday discussed ways to implement effective measures against the spread of the virus throughout Prachuap Khiri Khan.

All entertainment venues nationwide have been warned to never make very loud noise, which might otherwise disturb their neighborhoods, or else they could be shut down by law, according to Sutthipong Chulcharoen, undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior.

5-meter python rescued from temple pipes in Satun province

Grab Thailand is participating in the government’s tax refund scheme, “Easy E-Receipt,” by launching the “GrabMart Easy E-Receipt” campaign in collaboration with leading retailers, as well as small and medium merchant partners nationwide.

The campaign aims to stimulate domestic spending at the beginning of the year by helping shoppers obtain electronic tax invoices and receipts from the Grab app, enabling tax deductions of up to Bt50,000. Ukrainian drowns trying to swim from Koh Chang to nearby island

A Ukrainian man drowned near Bailan Beach on the island of Koh Chang in the eastern province of Trat. He reportedly tried to swim from Koh Chang to Koh Man Nai after an argument with his family.

Locals discovered the dead body near Bailan Beach in the Koh Chang Tai subdistrict, on Koh Chang at around 2pm yesterday, and reported the matter to the village chief, Termsak Sertsri. Foreigner Filmed Urinating Off the Back of TukTuk in Phuket

A video clip of a foreign man who was standing and urinating on the back of a tuk tuk in Patong has gone viral on social media this week, causing outrage and anger from many Thai social media users who demanded the foreigner be arrested and charged to the fullest extent of the law.

Thailand’s Famed Elephant Tourism Is Controversial — Here’s How to Pick an Ethical Sanctuary

In Thailand, it’s very easy to encounter an elephant. Some sites allow quiet observation, as you admire the massive animals from afar. Other tourist venues offer activities like feeding, riding, or bathing with elephants. Many places toss around the term “ethical” when describing the encounters, but they often are not the sanctuaries they promote.

(Editor note: Expat News visited the Elephant Nature Park outside of Chiang Mai, and we have to dispute one warning about not physically interacting with the elephants. Unlike some “sanctuaries”, where the elephants are basically penned in – or chained or caged, pachyderms at Elephant Nature Park mostly are allowed to roam free in the mountainous jungles of the park and visitors are allowed to mingle with them for bathing, feeding and walks. These are rescued elephants and their young, and as long as there is no riding of the elephants, we see no problem with this activity.)

“Visiting an animal sanctuary while traveling can be a great way to support local animal welfare and conservation efforts, but you need to do your homework because there are many bogus sanctuaries operating that can lure in well-meaning and unsuspecting tourists,” Wendy Higgins, director of international media for Humane Society International.
