Hua Hin marks Loy Krathong

Hua Hin celebrated Loy Krathong last night, with residents gathering at several locations across the city to take part in one of Thailand’s most recognizable annual cultural traditions. This year’s Loy Krathong celebrations in Hua Hin were scaled back following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, but the events continued in a respectful and reflective manner.

At Khao Tao Reservoir, families and groups of friends released krathongs made from natural materials such as banana leaves and bread into the water as part of the long-standing tradition of paying respect to the Goddess of Water and symbolically letting go of misfortune. Similar scenes took place near the Hua Hin fishing pier, as well as at Queen’s Park (Suan Luang Rajini 19 Rai), Khao Noi, Hua Don, Nong Kae and Saphan Khee Lek. Continued …

Everyone’s buzzing about the blood test that detects 50 types of cancer

“No cancer signal detected.” The blood test results popped up in my online health portal without much fanfare. A doctor would chat about them with me later, congratulating me on the “phew”-worthy result.

I took the Galleri multi-cancer early detection (MCED) test about a year ago in 2024 as part of my longevity-focused stay at Canyon Ranch, a luxury wellness retreat in Tucson, Arizona. Bribery probe deepens police credibility crisis

The reputation of the Royal Thai Police (RTP) has suffered a significant blow following a decision by the Police Complaints Review Committee (PCRC) to formally accuse former National Police Chief Torsak Sukvimol and more than 200 police officers of disciplinary misconduct for allegedly accepting bribes from online gambling networks.

This case is unusual. In the past, most corruption probes often targeted a group of low-ranking policemen. However, this case has shaken the entire RTP, as the probe points a finger at the former national police chief who oversaw 200,000 cops. Continued …

Bangkok collects 391,027 krathongs in Loy Krathong festival

Bangkok collected 391,027 krathongs during Loy Krathong, a 24% drop from last year, with most made from natural materials and properly disposed of.

Aekvarunyoo Amrapala, spokesperson for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), reported that all 50 district offices collected krathongs from 110 sites across the city during the Loy Krathong Festival. The cleanup began at 8 pm yesterday and was completed by 5 am today. Continued …

Thailand to Tax All Online Shopping Imports Starting 2026

In a significant policy shift, Thailand’s Customs Department announced today that starting Jan. 1, 2026, all foreign goods sold online will face an import duty if valued at more than 1 baht. This move will end the current exemption for items priced below 1,500 baht, which will expire at the end of this year.

The introduction of this duty, alongside the existing value-added tax (VAT), is predicted to generate at least 3 billion Thai baht annually for the government. The policy change arises from the observation that foreign goods imported through various platforms and priced below 1,500 baht total over 30 billion baht per year. Director-general of the Customs Department, Panthong Loikulnan, stated that failing to collect any duties gives an edge to foreign goods over Thai businesses, impacting local producers, especially SMEs. Thai exports on course for double-digit growth this year

The improving global economy is expected to boost Thai exports by 9.5%-10% this year, higher than previously estimated, but Thailand will not gain significantly from the growth, says the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB). The panel previously projected export growth of 2%-3% for 2025.

Improved international trade was attributed for declining concerns over US tariffs, while new purchase orders arrived for industrial products, said Poj Aramwattananont, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, who chaired a JSCCIB meeting yesterday. Continued … 

Inflation eases for seventh month straight

The headline consumer price index (CPI) decreased by 0.76% year-on-year to 100 in October, marking the seventh straight month of decline, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

Nantapong Chiralerspong, director-general of the Ministry of Commerce’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), attributed the reduction in the rate of inflation to government measures aimed at easing the cost of living, energy price reductions, and decreases in the prices of essential items such as pork, chicken eggs, fresh vegetables, and fresh fruit. EV and PPV boost car production in September, while pickup truck sales decline

Automotive Industry Club of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) reported that in September car production grew by 14% compared to the previous month, driven largely by the increase in electric vehicles (EVs) and pickup passenger vehicles (PPVs). However, pickup truck production declined, impacted by the challenging economic conditions and stricter lending policies.

A total of 128,104 cars were produced in September 2025, reflecting a 14% increase from August and a 4.8% increase from September 2024. This growth is mainly attributed to the increased production of electric passenger vehicles (EVs), which compensate for the reduced imports of EVs into the country in 2023-2024. National parks generate 2.2-billion baht from tourists in fiscal 2025

Thailand’snational parks have collected approximately 2.2 billion baht in entrance and accommodation fees from tourists in fiscal year 2025, announced the chief of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) yesterday.

Atthapol Charoenshunsa, DNP director-general, stated that the revenue from tourists between October 2024 and September 2025 rose by 8.39 million baht, or 0.38%, compared to the same period last year. Finnair piles on Thailand flights for winter sun seekers

The Thai Life Assurance Assn. (TLAA) has issued a warning to the public against purchasing life or health insurance policies from unlicensed foreign entities operating online. The association said buyers have no legal protection under Thai law, while sellers could face serious criminal penalties.

Thailand’s Foreign Tourist Numbers Drop 7.2% This Year

Foreign tourist arrivals in Thailand from Jan. 1 to Nov. 2 have decreased by 7.2% compared to the same period last year, according to the Tourism and Sports Ministry. The total number of foreign visitors during this period was reported at 26.89 million. Malaysia emerged as the largest source market with 3.88 million visitors, closely followed by China, contributing 3.8 million.

All nations of the world had homework this year: submit new-and-improved plans to fight climate change. But the plans they handed in “have barely moved the needle” on reducing Earth’s future warming, a new United Nations report finds. A good chunk of that progress is counteracted by the United States’ withdrawal from the effort, the report adds.

Forest Taskforce Probes Kaeng Krachan Land Grab

A special taskforce from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) has launched an investigation into alleged forest encroachment and destruction in Kaeng Krachan National Park and adjacent state land in Hua Hin district, Prachuap Khiri Khan. The probe follows reports that investors have cleared forested hillsides and excavated soil in protected zones.

The taskforce is examining claims of land ownership under Nor Sor 3 Kor documents allegedly covering 3,162 rai — 2,016 rai of state property and 1,146 rai within the national park. Investigators found new evidence of encroachment beyond these documents, totaling 914 rai, 81 rai within the park and 833 rai of state land. The area shows extensive soil removal, hill excavation, and unauthorized blockage of public waterways. Continued …

Bus crashes in Hua Hin, 8 students injured

Eight student cadets were injured when a Hua Hin–Pranburi route bus skidded on a rain-soaked road and crashed into a power pole while descending Khao Dang Pass yesterday. Police have charged the driver with reckless driving and damaging government property.

The accident occurred at around 6 pm. Police at Hua Hin Police Station received a report of a crash near the downhill section of Khao Dang Pass on the Hua Hin–Nong Phlab Road. Rescue teams from the Sawang Hua Hin Foundation were dispatched to the scene. Continued …

Super Full Moon to Grace Loy Krathong Night

Thailand will experience a spectacular celestial event on Nov. 5, coinciding with the Loy Krathong festival. The Super Full Moon, the closest the moon will be to Earth this year, will be visible in the sky.

The moon will be only 356,966 kilometers away from Earth, appearing larger and brighter than usual. This astronomical phenomenon occurs due to the moon’s elliptical orbit, reaching its nearest point, or perigee, with an average distance of 357,000 kilometers from Earth. Heavy rain forecast across Thailand as low-pressure system strengthens

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) reported today that an active low-pressure cell covering the upper Gulf of Thailand is drawing moisture-laden easterly winds into the upper part of the country, while a weak high-pressure system lingers over northern areas. The confluence of easterly and southeasterly winds across the north is expected to bring increased rainfall, including isolated heavy showers in several regions.

A 55-year-old man was found dead after being attacked by a wild elephant in the Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary in Bueng Kan province. The discovery followed a three-day search after the man was reported missing by his relatives.

Authorities believe he encountered the elephant at close range while collecting forest produce and was trampled to death. Preliminary examinations indicated that the man sustained fatal injuries consistent with being attacked by a wild elephant. Thai September exports stronger than expected

Customs-cleared exports rose 19.0% in September from a year earlier, the fastest rate of growth in 42 months, the commerce ministry said today, comfortably beating analysts’ expectations. Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother passed away peacefully at 9.21pm on Friday at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, the Thai Red Cross Society, the Bureau of the Royal Household announced.

The bureau said in a statement that a team of doctors monitoring and treating Her Majesty’s health at the hospital since Sept. 7, 2019, found she had several illnesses and abnormalities in multiple systems that required ongoing medical care. Continued …

Petrol, diesel pump prices cut

The energy minister yesterday ordered a reduction in pump prices of 50 satang per liter for diesel and 30 satang for all kinds of petrol, effective from 5am today.

Baby turtles make a break for it on PKK’s Koh Thalu Beach

Over 100 endangered hawksbill sea turtles hatched on Koh Thalu Beach in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Bang Saphan Noi district, marking a significant win for marine conservation efforts.

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) confirmed that 101 hatchlings were born, following 65 days of careful monitoring by rangers and marine conservation teams. Airports of Thailand (AOT) has announced that Suvarnabhumi Airport has been ranked among the world’s top 10 airports in the Readers’ Choice Awards 2025. The ranking was based on votes from travelers worldwide.

Thailand open to US role only as facilitator in Cambodia peace talks

Thailand has expressed openness to an offer from a major power to assist in its talks with Cambodia, but only in a facilitating role, not as a negotiator, Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said yesterday.

“Thailand has preferred to resolve the conflicts with Cambodia through bilateral means. But if that major power has good intentions and wishes to serve as a facilitator rather than a negotiator, we have no objection,” Sihasak said. Continued …

Thailand’s fascination with large and powerful animals is blurring the line between pet ownership and public safety. Experts warn that the combination of lax ownership laws, online fame, and the urge to interact with predators is a recipe for disaster – especially for children.

Microsoft blocks offline Windows 11 installs, forces account login

Microsoft has closed the loophole that allowed users to install Windows 11 offline, now requiring an internet connection and Microsoft account login to complete setup.

Previously, users could bypass the mandatory account step by entering the command oobe\bypassnro during installation. This method allowed installation without connecting to the internet or signing in with a Microsoft account. But in its latest Windows 11 preview build, Microsoft has removed this option, along with other known workarounds. Continued …

Thailand Has Become Southeast Asia’s Hub of Transnational Repression

On Sept. 29, Murray Hunter, a retired Australian researcher, was arrested in Bangkok in relation to a defamation suit filed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Hunter had lived in Malaysia for years, and was a university lecturer there until 2015, when he moved to Thailand.

In Thailand, he “continued to write about Malaysian politics and Southeast Asian issues and his “critical reports have earned the ire of Malaysian authorities. In April 2024, the MCMC accused him of ‘slanderous postings.’ In February 2025, it filed defamation charges against the writer. Continued …

Thailand rated as top 5 global PCB manufacturing hub

Narit Therdsteerasukdi, secretary-general of the Board of Investment (BOI), revealed that as the global economy increasingly relies on data, speed, and smart devices, printed circuit boards (PCBs) have become one of the hottest areas for investment. Thailand is rapidly establishing itself as a key regional and global center for the industry.

Between 2022 and June 2025, investment in Thailand’s semiconductor and advanced electronics sector has grown significantly. During this period, 517 investment promotion applications were filed, totaling over 700 billion baht, of which 180 projects were specifically for PCBs, with a combined value exceeding 200 billion baht. Thai shippers expect 5% export growth for 2025

The Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) is confident that the country’s exports will grow by 5% this year despite a potential slowdown in the final quarter.

Chairman Dhanakorn Kasetrsuwan said total export value rose by 13.3% year-on-year to $223.2 billion in the first eight months of this year, while imports increased by 11.3% to $224.9 billion. Continued …

Thai exports to trading partners under free trade agreements (FTAs) have steadily expanded, especially shipments to neighboring countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the 10-member bloc’s dialogue partners.

Arada Fuangtong, director-general of the Commerce Ministry’s Department of Foreign Trade, said Thai exports under FTAs exceeded 53 billion US dollars during the first seven months of 2025, representing 11.6% year-on-year growth. Continued …

Aerothai to offer seaplane service in Phuket and Trang from mid-next year

Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (AeroThai) is preparing to test seaplane operations between islands, piloting services in a sandbox environment in Phuket and Trang from October to November. The initiative aims to provide alternative travel options for both residents and tourists.

Mallika Jirapunvanit, deputy minister of transport, stated that AeroThai will study the environmental impact of seaplane operations, including propeller and engine noise, potential oil leaks, and effects on coral reefs.
