Phuket Scams Surge: 5,500 Victims and 413 Million Baht Lost

Phuket is witnessing an alarming rise in financial fraud, with over 5,500 individuals falling victim to scams in the past year, resulting in cumulative losses of 413 million baht. These figures were confirmed by the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) Region 5.

There has been a sharp increase in scam activities since 2022. Last year, while there were 1,365 reported victims, who collectively lost 10.9 million baht. The numbers jumped dramatically in 2023 to 3,538 victims with 18.8 million baht in losses. By 2024, the figures skyrocketed to 5,510 victims, with financial damages amounting to 413 million baht. Clampdown on Parking: Pattaya Enforces Strict Odd-Even Rule

Phuket eyes Bt500 billion in revenue for 2025

Phuket expects to achieve 500 billion baht in tourism revenue this year, said Sophon Suwannarat, the island’s provincial governor. He added that the resort island’s tourism revenue was deemed successful last year.

Sasikarn Watthanachan, deputy spokeswoman for the prime minister’s office, announced on Saturday that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has officially recognised Phu Phrabat Historical Park in Udon Thani as a World Heritage Site under the name Phu Phrabat, a testimony to the Sima stone tradition of the Dvaravati period.

New bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The new first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin will offer two round trips daily. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure will be from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

  • The bus will leave Hua Hin at 7 am and 2 pm
  • It will depart from Don Mueang at 7:30 am and 4 pm

Asian Emergency Medical Services meeting held in Hua Hin

The Taiwan National Fire Agency won an award for its emergency medical services and ambulance safety, at a conference of the Asian Association for Emergency Medical Services in Hua Hin Thursday.

The service includes a national data exchange platform linking the fire departments of 22 cities and counties with 10 emergency medical service systems. The group consisted of representatives from 20 countries working to educate and research emergency aid. As next week marks the onset of summer in Thailand, meteorologists forecast a particularly scorching season, particularly in the north and northeast of the country. 12 fast and furious drivers jailed after Pattaya motorway pile-up

Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin is confident that smart investment in the medical and wellness industry will generate a substantial proportion of the national income this year. Immigration Biometric System Fails to Record Data for 17 Million Travelers

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has admitted to lapses in its biometric system, affecting the tracking of about 17 million travelers last year. Council of State Rejects Plan to Lower Electricity Bills

The new first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin will offer two round trips daily. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure will be from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

New 1st-class bus service from Bangkok airports to Hua Hin, Pattaya

State-run Transport Co. will launch a first-class bus service from Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports to Hua Hin and Pattaya on March 8.

There will be two round trips daily between Don Mueang airport and Hua Hin district in Prachuap Khiri Khan, a distance of 216 kilometers per trip. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. Continued …

Thailand Faces Surge in Influenza: 100,000 Cases, 9 Deaths

Thailand is grappling with a serious influenza outbreak, having witnessed nearly 100,000 infections alongside nine fatalities in just 15 days. The Ministry of Public Health has confirmed this increase, underlining schools as significant hotspots. Cyber Police in about-face on scam workers: Most were trafficked

The cyber police said most of the 260 scam workers who have been screened are victims, with only two to three having volunteered to work for the call-center criminals rather just one of them being trafficked as earlier stated.

The head of the Technology Crime Suppression Division police, said 50 cyber policemen are working with frontline agencies in collecting information on criminal activities of these call-center gangs. They are also checking information on mobile phones and other electronic devices of the 260 scam workers who crossed over from Myanmar’s Myawaddy township to Phop Phra district of Tak province. New Casino Rules May Bar Thais Without $1.5M Fixed Deposits

The driver confessed to transporting the workers from Damnoen Saduak district to a destination in the south. Endangered Leopard Cat Cub Rescued from Roadside in Lampang After Fleeing Wildfire

Officials from the Wiang Kosai National Park rescue team have successfully rescued a male leopard cat found collapsed at the side of the road, believed to have fled from a nearby wildfire. The team discovered the exhausted young leopard cat cub lying near the road leading to the Lam Huai Samai Luang forest, just outside the park’s protected area. Industry restructuring is a key engine for driving the country’s economy, particularly in boosting the national GDP. For this reason, the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) is advancing measures to restructure nine target industries as part of the policy “Industrial Reform for a Modern, Clean, Convenient, and Transparent Economy”, aiming to increase gross domestic product by at least 1%.

Thailand May Ease Overseas Income Tax Rules Amid Global Changes

In a move that could significantly impact expatriates and Thai nationals alike, Thailand’s government is contemplating adjustments to the taxation of overseas income. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira has indicated that the global economic landscape necessitates a re-evaluation of current tax regulations, though specific details were not provided.

Presently, the Thai Revenue Department (TRD) stipulates that, effective Jan. 1, 2024, any assessable income transferred into Thailand from abroad by either Thai citizens or foreigners residing in Thailand for at least 180 days within a calendar year will be subject to personal income tax. Young Woman’s Tragic End in PKK Highlights Gambling Dangers

A 22-year-old woman, Natthaporn, was tragically found dead under a mango tree in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. She was reportedly overwhelmed by debt from online slot machine gambling. Her husband, Sukit, discovered her lifeless body Thursday after she failed to return home.

Wildfires rage across northern Thailand

The north of Thailand is grappling with a surge in wildfires, with 401 hotspots detected across 17 provinces, the Region 3 Forest Fire Control Center said. Phetchabun province has been particularly affected, registering 82 hotspots – the highest in the region – with fires spreading across almost the entire province.

The latest data released Thursday reveals the scale of the crisis. While specific data for other provinces was unavailable as of press time, Phetchabun’s 82 hotspots are of significant concern. Many Thai nationals who were once part of international scam call centers are now claiming they were tricked into it. Thai authorities recently cracked down on fraudulent call centers operating along the Thai-Myanmar border. The Gold Traders Assn. this morning announced buying prices for gold ornaments at 45,222.28 baht per baht weight and for gold bars at 46,050 baht per baht weight.

A fishing ban has been issued to allow fish stock to recover off the coasts of Prachuap Khiri Khan down to Surat Thani, says the Department of Fishery (DoF). The ban is issued over two periods — from Feb. 15 to May 15 and from May 16 to June 14, affecting multiple maritime zones.

Backpacker in Thailand taken on 1,200km detour

A foreign backpacker making his first visit to Thailand was planning an island getaway in the south, but after a miscommunication he ended up in the north nearly 1,200 kilometers away. He also lost his wallet on the way back, according to a policeman in Suphan Buri province who shared the story online.

According to the officer’s post, the backpacker told a driver he wanted to go to Koh Tao, a popular tourist island in the southern province of Surat Thani. “Thank you for the article ‘Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax‘ and thank you ‘Thesatat’ for being a ‘pipe cleaner’ trying to be a good person and file taxes in PKK. The head of the PKK tax office personally promised us at a meeting in Hua Hin that “All DTAs will be honored.” Clearly, he hasn’t shared that with his subordinates. Personally, I’m going through AIT (American International Tax Advisors) and let them deal with these issues. At the end of the day (which may be two to three years out – maybe more – we hope to pay only what is legally required.” – PB

Editor: We have asked the tax consultants we used for our previous reporting to assess this latest news, but this is probably just a lack of understanding on the part of local officials about the tax. We anticipated this might be a problem early on, as the law is ambiguous and there are roughly 90 dual tax treaties to be considered, not all the same. We doubt, at this stage, that there has been any education of local officials, and even if there is, the complications might make them resort to an “everyone has to pay the tax” mentality. There will probably be a lot of misinformation on this issue as we go forward and we will try to keep you informed as we hear about problems or solutions. Getting expert guidance as you have done is probably a wise move.

The 2024 remittance tax changes have introduced complexities that some local tax offices — especially in provincial areas — may not yet fully understand. “In cases like U.S. Social Security, the rules are clear: it is not taxable in Thailand, nor does it need to be included on a Thai tax return. However, misunderstandings at the local level can lead to unnecessary stress and potential disputes with tax authorities.

“For expats looking to avoid these difficulties, using a professional tax filing service can help ensure compliance while avoiding the frustration of dealing with tax offices unfamiliar with international tax agreements.”

Top Thai Officers Probed Over Links to Scams in Myanmar

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) is conducting an investigation into alleged connections between senior police officers and criminal activities linked to scam operations across the Burmese border. This action follows the transfer of five senior officers from Tak province, a move that has raised eyebrows due to the significant wealth of one of the officers.

At the heart of the investigation is Police Maj Gen Ekkarat Intasueb, acting chief of Inspection Division 6 for the Office of the Inspector General. His duties encompass seven provinces, including Tak, which is directly opposite Myawaddy — a known hub for scam syndicates. Myanmar to Repatriate 7,000 Call Center Scam Victims to Thailand

Myanmar is preparing to return approximately 7,000 victims of call center scams to Thailand. Phumtham Wechayachai, deputy prime minister and defense minister, confirmed this plan, stressing that these victims should be repatriated directly to their home countries without being temporarily housed in Thailand.

Thailand moving to cut power, internet, fuel supply to Cambodia

After cutting electricity, internet and fuel supply from five points to Myanmar border townships where scam centers are operating, Deputy Prime Minister/Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is now expanding this strategy to three districts and an island in four provinces along the Thai-Cambodian border to suppress transnational criminals holed up across that border.

Hotel room rates in Thailand rose last year by an average of 15% from 2023, making it the only country to achieve double-digit growth, according to SiteMinder, an e-commerce platform that helps hotels sell rooms on their own websites and through third parties.

The company’s Hotel Booking Trends report, based on more than 125 million reservations – the largest volume of hotel reservations from any single platform – shows that the average daily rate (ADR) in Thailand increased to 5,377 baht from 4,648 baht in 2023.
