Pattaya riding elephant rescued, finds new home at WFFT

Elderly elephant Nam Chok spent decades being used to give rides to tourists at an elephant trekking camp in Pattaya. Now in her sixties, her owner agreed to send her to a sanctuary for her retirement.

The partially blind elephant is suspected to have been caught from the wild, and has been in captivity for decades ever since. She has recently been working at a trekking camp in Pattaya, where elephants are used to entertain and give rides to paying tourists. Continued …

Burmese man shot dead by Thai police in Kui Buri after knife attack

A tragic incident unfolded yesterday in the Kui Buri district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province when a 30-year-old Burmese man was shot dead by local police. The man, reportedly suffering from a mental breakdown, had threatened villagers with a knife, leading to a police intervention that resulted in his death.

Upon receiving the report of Ao Ko’s erratic behavior, officers from the Kui Buri Police Station, led by Deputy Inspector Vattanachai Kirinil, rushed to the scene. They found Ao Ko outside a row of nine rental rooms, brandishing a knife in each hand. Continued …

Bangkok air pollution back to hazardous as PM2.5 season gets underway

Air pollution in Bangkok rose to the “orange” level (starting to affect health) on Tuesday, signalling the start of the so-called PM2.5 season.

Levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometres or less in diameter (PM2.5) ranged from 24.3 to 49.8 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m³) across the city, according to the Pollution Control Department (PCD). The PCD reduced the threshold at which PM2.5 levels are considered unsafe from 50 to 37.5μg/m³ in June. Continued …

The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) invited the public to witness the Orionids meteor shower, a spectacle of dust from Halley’s Comet, from Saturday night, Oct. 21, to early Sunday morning, Oct. 22.

600 Thais to be evacuated a day from Israel, says PM, as death toll rises to 30

The UN secretary-general has expressed his condolences over the loss of Thai lives in Israel, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Wednesday, as the Israeli government confirmed the death of another Thai, raising fatalities to 30.

The Israeli government confirmed the death to the Thai embassy in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, although it was not clear when the latest victim had died. The number of injured remained unchanged at 16, while 18 are presumed to have been taken hostage by Hamas. Continued …

Songkhla aquarium: White conch building turns white elephant

A senior official of the southern office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday called on the government to make a decision on what should be done with an aquarium in Songkhla province left unfinished for 14 years after spending 1.4 billion baht.

Kiartisak Putphan, assistant secretary to the NACC Area 9 Office, made the call when he led a team of reporters and NACC officials from his office to inspect the aquarium located inside Tinsulanonda Fisheries College in Tambon Pawong of Songkhla’s Muang district. The rule limiting the spending of the 10,000-baht handout under the digital wallet scheme to a four-kilometer radius of the registrant’s home address was likely to be amended, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said on Wednesday.

Thai banks are likely to report profits in the range of 1.86 billion to 1.91 billion baht for the first nine months of this year, Kasikornbank’s KResearch Center said.

The banks’ financial statements for the third quarter of this year still reflect adjustments to protect their operational performance, despite benefiting from the increase in interest rates, supporting the net interest margin (NIM) of the Thai banking system within the range of 3.14%-3.18%, the center said. A surge of nearly 90% in ridership was recorded on Bangkok’s Red and Purple electric train lines Monday, following the introduction of a 20-baht flat fare.

State revenue outperforms target by 6.9%

For the first 11 months of fiscal 2023, government revenue exceeded its target by 6.9%, or 153 billion baht, achieving a treasury balance of 300 billion baht at the end of August, said Fiscal Policy Office Director-general Pornchai Thiraveja.

Pornchai said the government collected net revenue of 2.36 trillion baht for the first 11 months of fiscal 2023 (October 2022 to August 2023), an increase of 6.9%, an improvement on 4.9% growth recorded in the same period last year. Continued …

World’s biggest eyewear company opens new plant in Rayong

EssilorLuxottica, the world’s leading eyewear producer, officially opened a new plant in Rayong on Tuesday. The integrated ophthalmic lenses and frames manufacturing plant is part of the company’s 16-billion-baht investment to turn Thailand into its Southeast Asia manufacturing hub. The new factory is expected to create 6,000 jobs.

Hotels unable to improve room rates

Hotels in major destinations overall have been unable to improve the average daily room rate during the high season, due to the slow rebound of the mass market, according to the Thai Hotels Assn. (THA).

Petrol prices to drop by 2.50 baht as new year gift

Taxes made simple: the story of VAT

According to an announcement made in September covering additional amendments to reducing the value-added tax (VAT) rate as per Article 80 of the Revenue Code, Thailand’s VAT rate was reduced to 6.3% on the sale of goods, provision of services, or imports, effective Oct. 1, 2017, until Sept. 30, 2024.

Weak baht contributes to 350-billion-baht trade deficit

The private sector has expressed concern at the continued weakness of the baht, which has resulted in Thailand’s trade balance being in deficit for eight consecutive months to the tune of 350 billion baht.

According to the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC)’s Chairman Chaichan Chareonsuk, even though Thai exports have benefited from the weakened baht, reducing the prices of Thai products in line with the currency, it has also increased the costs of importing goods and raw materials needed for production. Western retirees in Thailand feeling rather insecure

Premier Srettha Thavisin’s new Pheu Thai-led administration has already seen massive investment in Thailand’s short-term visa programs. The mass market Chinese tourists are now 30 days visa-free, at least until February 2024, and appear to have no problem obtaining a further month at immigration if wished.

Late king, Rama IX, remembered in Hua Hin

Over a thousand people yesterday attended ceremonies honoring the late H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Participants carried the royal cypher of His Majesty from Phon Kingphet Public Park to Wang Klai Kangwon. Hua Hin’s blue swimming crab bank initiative honored

Hua Hin has been listed in the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories for 2023 for the “blue swimming crab bank” initiative in Khao Takiab. The initiative is organized by the local fishing community of Khao Takiab and focuses on the conservation of the blue swimming crab population.

Under the initiative, any gravied female crabs caught by the local fishing fleet are released back into the sea after they are placed in a nurturing condition to spawn. From October 2018 to May 2023, the crab bank initiative released over 150 million crab larvae into the sea, representing an economic value exceeding 1,000 million THB (approximately 28.5 million USD).

The crabs are released back into the sea every morning from 9am on the beach next to Amazon Coffee in Khao Takiab,. Anyone can take part in the releasing of the crabs.

Australia is interested in investing in infrastructure development projects, water resources in particular, in Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), according to Thailand’s trade representative Nalinee Taveesin.

Australia is Thailand’s 8th largest trading partner, with bilateral trade last year estimated at about US$18.38 billion, with a tendency to increase in line with Australia’s economic strategy in Southeast Asia over the next decade and longer, as announced by the Australian prime minister in September, with the government having initially set aside US$95.4 million across four years to fund the strategy. Mama noodle maker sets out expansion plans

Thai President Foods, the manufacturer of Mama instant noodles, plans to invest more than 2 billion baht over a three-year period to expand its production capacity in response to anticipated future growth, both domestically and abroad.

Thai Air Asia will reduce direct flights from four to twice weekly between Chiang Mai, the gateway city to north Thailand and the beach resort town of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand.

Work in progress viewable at Cha Am’s Mrigadayavan Palace

The Mrigadayavan Palace is opening its doors this weekend. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024.

Today, the palace is open from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. There is a 90-baht admission fee for adults. Lower fees are available for students, while young children and elderly can visit for a voluntary donation.

Two Thai elephants born through artificial insemination

Among the more than 4,000 elephants in Thailand, two hold a special honor: both were born using artificial insemination in a bid to protect the species and maintain the country’s biodiversity.

According to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation as of March 9 this year, between 4,013 and 4,422 elephants lived in 91 national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and non-hunting areas across Thailand. Influenza cases rise five-fold in Thailand

Rising baht forecast to climb higher against dollar

The baht opened at 36.54 baht per U.S. dollar on Wednesday, strengthening from 36.75 at the close of trading yesterday. The dollar weakened after the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield fell to 4.65% yesterday.

Video: Cobra caught by wildlife handlers

A cobra lurking near a resident’s yard was captured by wildlife handlers in Nakhon Ratchasima province. The terrified homeowner called the snake catchers for assistance on Oct. 7. Footage shows the volunteers grabbing the three-meter cobra using snake tongs as it tried to hide in a narrow alley beside the house. Gregal, a beachfront Mediterranean restaurant, has opened in Hua Hin. The restaurant is located beside The Royal Princess Condominium Hua Hin. Wine tax in Thailand: A Protectionist Barrier?

Why is wine tax in Thailand 250% on average? In most cases, duties constitute a state’s first protection against products imported from other countries in direct competition with local production.

Does Thailand produce wine? Yes, local production is around one million liters per year and is based in three areas of the country: Loei, Hua Hin and Khao Yai. The national oil and gas conglomerate PTT Plc has agreed to delay accepting payments of 8-9 billion baht for the gas it sells to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to help the government reduce power bills for the rest of this year. Gas makes up around 60% of the fuel used for power generation in Thailand.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports said yesterday the number of foreign tourists arriving in Thailand dropped week over week (Oct. 2-8, 2023 over Sept. 25-Oct. 1, 2023), especially those from China, with their total plunging by 29.5%.

Royal Thai Police submitted documents and evidence to the Thailand Courts to issue a warrant for the arrest of a Burmese man for the suspected murder of a former Thai diplomat at a house in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district. PTTEP investing over 14 billion baht to reduce global warming

PTT Exploration and Production Plc (PTTEP) is investing over 14 billion baht to capture carbon in the Gulf of Thailand, aiming to reduce global warming.

The company revealed its intention to establish clear mechanisms for carbon credits, or carbon taxes, as well as regulations for tracking and verifying the stored carbon. Tourism fee fund to be fast-tracked after payouts to families in the Siam Paragon mass shooting

The Tourism Ministry and the Siam Paragon Shopping Center came forward last week to compensate the families of the two women murdered during Tuesday’s mass shooting in Bangkok after the government admitted that the Tourism Assistance Fund to compensate tourists involved in emergencies in Thailand had recently been canceled by officials in an efficiency drive.

Tourism Minister Sudawan Wang-Suphakitkosol promised to fast-track the introduction of the long-awaited foreign tourism entry fee, which the ministry now proposes will be paid by travelers on arrival at entry points to the kingdom, providing emergency medical health insurance cover and other benefits for 30 days from the point of entry. Hua Hin now has once-daily bus service to Pattaya, leaving Hua Hin at 9am and departing from Pattaya at 8am. Tickets are 473 THB.

Tickets can be bought in person at the Hua Hin bus station or online. Buses depart from the Hua Hin bus station and in front of Government Savings Bank, Cha Am.. Tickets
