Researchers in Thailand are exploring the science behind herbal compresses

The scent of fragrant lemongrass mingles with earthy ginger and tangy tamarind, punctuated by the sharp, menthol-like aroma of camphor. It’s a familiar smell for spa-goers: a traditional Thai herbal compress. The treatment combines herbs in a cotton cloth, which is wrapped into a compact ball and steamed for around 10 minutes before the practitioner applies it to the body, typically after a massage.

Herbal compresses have been used for centuries for muscle aches, joint pain, and to reduce inflammation. However, it’s unclear how much benefit comes from the herbs: a 2015 review paper highlighted that the effects were mainly associated with heat, which increases blood flow and reduces pain. The Thai government recently announced that over 30 million foreign tourists have visited the country in 2024, reflecting a strong recovery for the tourism sector after the pandemic. However, many businesses in Pattaya, a major tourist hub, report they are still struggling. Several factors contribute to this disconnect.

While Thailand has seen a surge in tourists, their travel patterns and preferences have shifted. Popular emerging destinations such as Chiang Mai, Krabi, and Koh Samui are drawing visitors who might have otherwise chosen Pattaya. Continued …

Data paints economy as ‘black hole’

I am known for being pessimistic about the Thai economy. Apart from encouraging official economic growth figures of 1.6% in Q1, 2.2% in Q2, and 3.0% in Q3, I do not think anyone can be optimistic about the economy. It is obvious that GDP data and the actual economic situation do not go hand in hand.

It is beyond my comprehension that the non-performing loan (NPL) level rose 14.1% in Q3 while the economy expanded 3.0%. Shouldn’t it be the opposite when debtor’s income rises? Continued …

6 Red Flags You’re About To Eat At A Tourist Trap Restaurant

For those who travel to eat, meals while away from home are precious. A marquee meal can be the most memorable highlight of a trip, and when you only get so many per day with no do-overs, there is literally no room for mediocre food. And even harder to stomach is when it’s expensive, inauthentic, or — even worse, in a world with such diverse cuisine — boring. In other words, a tourist trap restaurant.

According to a study by online passport photo service provider PhotoAiD, the top three criteria that make a place a tourist trap are above-average pricing, amenities tailored for tourists, and a lack of cultural authenticity. Continued …

What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Thailand

I first visited Thailand a few years ago – a month of solo travel to avoid the rainy British winter. My first stop, Bangkok. I ate deep fried insects at Khao San Road and visited Siriraj Medical Museum, which exhibits grisly medical specimens in a decidedly maximalist fashion. I traveled south to visit a few of Thailand’s islands with a friend, then north to Chiang Mai and the small mountain town of Pai, which is popular with backpackers.

Last year I returned to Thailand on a hiking and kayaking trip, and visited the south of the country. We went to Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, a vast lake in the heart of Khao Sok National Park, where narrow karst islands jut out from the turquoise water. We spent the night in a floating bungalow, soaking up the tranquility and jumping into kayaks whenever we wanted to explore. Continued …

Microsoft unveils closed-loop liquid cooling design for data centers

Tech-giant Microsoft announced on Monday that it will start its “zero-water evaporated” liquid cooling systems operations for data centers in 2026. The design is said to optimize AI workloads and consume zero water with the use of a closed-loop design.

(Editor: Thailand is poised to be a leading center for data centers in Southeast Asia, posing concerns about water use in a country consistently battling drought conditions.)

Data centers rely heavily on water to remove heat from data halls containing servers and other IT equipment. A substantial amount of water evaporates as part of the cooling process and must be constantly replaced. According to a NPR 2024 report, data centers use around “300,000 gallons of water a day to keep cool, roughly equivalent to water use in 100,000 homes.” Continued …

Covid-19: from ticking time bomb to mild inconvenience

The past few weeks have seen increasing online discussion as to whether Covid-19 is now a mild disease and whether the initial response, in particular the prevention measures and vaccine distribution, was excessive. Prof. Dr. Yong Poovorawan, head of the Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, addressed this issue in an online post, stating that times and circumstances have changed, making direct comparisons impossible.

“We cannot compare the situation during the first two years of the outbreak to that in the fourth or fifth year. The disease has significantly diminished in severity due to the evolution of the virus itself and the immunity humans have developed from vaccines and infections. As a result, the disease is now much less severe compared to the early stages of the outbreak,” Dr. Yong wrote. Continued …

Hua Hin International School teacher shares his thoughts on education

Sixty-five years ago, in a University of Cambridge lecture called “Two Cultures”, the writer and scientist C. P. Snow bemoaned the fact that students saw themselves either as scientists or as following a humanities path. He despaired that “There seems…to be no place where the cultures meet.”

When I was at school studying A levels, it was taken for granted that the boys would choose mathematics and science subjects while the girls would go down the arts and humanities route. Roll forward a few (well, a lot of) years, and this is still a hard nut to crack: I work in an IB school where very few girls choose higher-level physics and only rarely do boys choose higher-level art and design. Supporting a Circular Economy in Thailand

A circular economy for any type of material is a disruption to the traditional, linear thinking of “take-make-dispose”, in which natural resources are developed into products and then disposed of after use. It is a new way of doing business and consuming goods that maximizes the value of resources — supporting the repurposing, or circularity, of materials.

This transition is important to support a more sustainable future around the world, and it will take collaboration and innovation to achieve it. A circular economy takes a product’s total lifecycle into account — from the resources used to create it, to how it is made, to its use, disposal, and reuse. Continued …

Economy Faces Strain from Chinese Goods Influx: BoT

The influx of Chinese goods has put pressure on Thailand’s manufacturing growth and has hindered loan expansion within the banking sector, according to Bank of Thailand Gov. Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput yesterday. He addressed these concerns at the “Thailand Next Move 2025: Resiliency for an Uncertain World” seminar held by Money and Banking magazine.

Since 2014, Southeast Asian countries have witnessed a consistent rise in Chinese imports, with a noticeable acceleration starting in 2020. This surge is largely attributed to escalating geopolitical and economic fragmentation, Sethaput noted. By 2023, Thailand’s imports from China reached $71.1 billion (roughly 2.53 trillion baht), making Thailand the second largest importer of Chinese goods in Southeast Asia, just after Vietnam. Thai car market suffering sales slump

Thailand’s auto market has been sluggish this year, with October sales hitting just 37,691 units – the lowest monthly figure in over four years. Thawatchai Jungsanguanpornsuk, managing director of Phranakorn Automotive Co., said that loan rejection rates have surged to 70%, particularly impacting pickup trucks, like single-cab and extended-cab models.
