Hua Hin-Chiang Mai flights go daily May 4

Air Asia has announced a significant expansion of its flights between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai. Travelers can look forward to daily flights from May 4 through June 14.

Flights will depart from Chiang Mai to Hua Hin at 10:20am and from Hua Hin to Chiang Mai at 12:20pm every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Continued …

Hua Hin love triangle tragedy: Millionaire and secretary’s deaths linked to affair

The police suspect that a love affair and jealousy may have been the motives behind the deaths of a millionaire and her secretary in a house located in the Hua Hin district of Prachuap Kiri Khan province. This suspicion arose after the secretary’s friend informed officers that the two individuals shared a relationship that extended beyond mere colleagues and friends.

Thai man survives black bear attack during ant egg hunt

A Thai man survived an attack by an Asian black bear while hunting for ant eggs within the Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary in the Isaan province of Buriram on the weekend.

The victim’s wife shared details of the incident on Sunday. She explained that her 60-year-old husband, Phumin Joysaku, entered the forest in the morning to search for ant eggs. The eggs and pupae of weaver ants are also known as Khai Mod Daeng in Thai. Continued …

Thailand’s gold prices hit new high, breaking 37,000 baht mark

Gold prices continue to surge in Thailand, with the cost of gold ornaments breaking the 37,000 baht mark for the first time. The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) reported a significant increase compared to the previous day’s rate, where the selling price of gold ornaments reached 37,100 baht per baht-weight as of the latest update on March 11.

The domestic buying price for gold bars was set at 36,500 baht per baht-weight, with the selling price slightly higher at 36,600 baht. PM Budgeted 139 Million Baht To Fund World Tours

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has been given a sum of 139 million baht in government funding at his disposal with which he may travel the world over for the current fiscal year, according to a government official.

Progress on 6 Thai FTAs now under negotiation

Thailand is negotiating 11 free trade agreements, including five related to upgrading existing FTAs, along with developing six new FTAs, as the kingdom aims to expand trade and investment with key trading partner countries near and distant.

According to information from the Department of Trade Negotiations, Ministry of Commerce, Thailand appears to have successfully negotiated and implemented a total of 15 FTAs with trading partners from 18 countries or territories. Sarun Benjanirat, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Office of Thailand (CAAT), has announced that 38 additional flights have been scheduled to transport passengers during the upcoming Songkran festival in response to the directive of Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit to implement short-term measures to counteract high airfare prices. Health Ministry Sets Alcohol Sales Guidelines for Songkran

The Ministry of Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew chaired a meeting of the Alcohol Control Committee, approving guidelines for alcohol control during the 2024 Songkran Festival. The MRT’s Yellow Line, which connects Lat Phrao (a neighborhood popular with backpackers) to Samrong in eastern Bangkok, opened in June 2023, while the MRT’s Pink Line, connecting the riverside district of Nonthaburi to Bangkok’s Min Buri district, launched at the end of the year. Two women found shot dead at property in Hua Hin

Police are currently investigating the deaths of two women found shot at a property in Hua Hin. The deceased, identified as a 63-year-old businesswoman and her 46-year-old secretary, were discovered on Sunday by the son of the older woman, after he grew concerned over his inability to contact his mother for several days.

Traveling from Bangkok to Hua Hin, he arrived at his mother’s home to find it securely locked, with the air conditioning still running. Upon entering the house through a back window, he was met with a foul smell, prompting him to alert local authorities. Continued …

Anthrax outbreak in Laos prompts raw meat warning in Thailand

Kenika Ounjit, a deputy government spokesperson, yesterday revealed a public health warning from the Department of Livestock Development. The warning urged the public to refrain from consuming raw meat. This follows a report of an anthrax outbreak in Laos.

According to the report, three cases of anthrax were identified on March 4 in the Soukhoumma district of the Lao province of Champasak. This province shares a border with Thailand’s eastern Ubon Ratchathani province, raising concerns for potential cross-border transmission, said Kenika, highlighting raw beef, buffalo, goat, and sheep meat as potential carriers of the bacterium. Hazardous smog in 48 provinces

Forty-eight provinces were blanketed with hazardous levels of PM2.5 on Monday morning and 11 provinces, mostly in the north, faced red levels of pollution, with Chiang Mai suffering the most.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency reported at 10am on Monday that the highest level of particulate matter, 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), was detected in the northern province of Chiang Mai, at 125.3 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Boy, 14, arrested for shooting death of teen in Hua Hin

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested following the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old in downtown Hua Hin last Thursday evening. Hua Hin Police Station launched an investigation into the incident, which happened on Naresdamri close to the entrance to Hua Hin Fishing Pier.

The shooting not only claimed the life of the young victim, known as “Nong Din,” but also left his 16-year-old friend seriously injured after being caught in the gunfire. Continued …

Frequent use of mosquito spray urged as dengue death toll rises

In a warning against the spread of dengue fever, the Public Health Ministry has urged people to protect themselves by using anti-mosquito sprays and lotions.

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said on Sunday that at the latest meeting of the National Communicable Disease Control committee, he learned that the number of dengue patients this year has risen to 17,783 cases, more than double the number compared to the same period last year. The disease has claimed 25 lives in 16 provinces this year alone, he said. Continued …

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) is calling on the government to examine fruit and vegetables purchased from neighboring countries and China more carefully after pesticide contamination was discovered in some imports of farm produce.

Someone is poisoning Rayong’s dogs, 36 dead so far

Three dog owners in Rayong’s Nikhom Phatthana district have asked police to take action against those responsible for poisoning their pets in separate incidents, resulting in the deaths of 36 animals. Somjit Palapol, a durian farmer, claims that his 19 dogs were poisoned on March 6, 17 of which died.

He said that he raised his dogs with love and best care, but they were killed by poison-laced food. ‘I am speechless and broken-hearted. I have already filed a complaint with the police, as the killings violate the law,’ he said. Continued …

Thai citizens view corruption within the civil service sector as motivated by greed more than any other reason, a new NIDA poll published on Sunday revealed.

Thai retail sector struggles despite tax incentives and tourist spending

Despite increased spending by tourists and tax incentives to encourage buying, Thailand’s retail sector is under strain. The sector, facing the challenges of a surge of substandard goods from China, is burdening local entrepreneurs.

Thai Retailers Assn. Vice President Chatchai Tuongratanaphan predicts a growth of only 1%-2% in the retail sector for the first half of the year. This is due to the postponed fiscal 2024 budget and the termination of the Easy E-Receipt scheme, which provided tax rebates of up to 50,000 baht (US$1,409) for spending from Jan. 1 to Feb. 15. Most of the 12,000 Thais employed in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates are illegal workers who were lured with promises of high pay. There are only about 4,500 who are fully and correctly documented.

Nipa Nirannoot, the Thai consul-general in Dubai, said many Thai women have been lured to work in massage parlors, but end up being forced into prostitution. Chiang Mai offers 10,000 baht reward, uses artificial rain to control pollution

The Chiang Mai governor is offering 10,000 baht to anyone who can lead to the arrest of forest fire suspects and has ordered rainmaking operations to control PM2.5 pollution.

Michelin plans to invest 300 million euros in Thailand

The government said on Friday French tire maker Michelin planned to invest 300 million euros (11.63 billion baht) in Thailand over the next three years to increase production capacity.

When the lights dimmed on the 2024 Michelin Guide Thailand awards in Bangkok on Dec. 13, history had been made. Chudaree Debhakam of Baan Tepa had become the first Thai female chef to lead a two-Michelin-star restaurant and Garima Arora the first female Indian chef to clinch two stars for her dining room Gaa.

Both women are very much in the minority, not just within Bangkok’s culinary community but in the international food world. A dispute that started on Facebook resulted in a 16-year-old teenager being shot dead in Hua Hn on Thursday night. The incident, which also left another person seriously injured, unfolded on Nares Damri Road in the municipal area of Hua Hin.

54 of 77 provinces face hazardous smog levels

Fifty-four out of 77 provinces in Thailand were blanketed with hazardous levels of ultrafine dust on Thursday morning, with 27 provinces, mostly in the north and the northeast, experiencing red (seriously harmful) levels of pollution.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported on Thursday that the highest level of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) was detected in the northernmost province of Chiang Rai, at 128.8 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air over the past 24 hours. The government’s safe threshold for PM2.5 is 37.5 µg/m³, while the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines recommend 25 µg/m³. Continued …

Temperatures set to soar in Hua Hin this week and next

Temperatures in Hua Hin and across Thailand are set to soar over the next week. The Thai Meteorological Department’s seven-day forecast for Hua Hin says maximum temperatures will range from 36–38 °C, with average temperatures between March 6-12 reaching 35°C.

During a morning stroll through vast salt fields in the seaside town of Samut Sakhon, I couldn’t resist but take breathtaking photos of a large flock of birds. Close by, experienced birdwatcher Suchart Daengpayon (also known as Mr. Tee) led a small group of foreign tourists on a trip to see the food-seeking behaviors of the spoon-billed sandpiper, an endangered shorebird species.

Fortunately, Mr. Tee kindly allowed me to use his spotting scope and gave me a brief overview of bird conservation efforts in tambon Khok Kham. Over 30 years ago, he and his neighbors established the Khok Kham Natural Conservation Club after working with an international survey team that wanted to get insights on the biodiverse marine habitats in Thailand’s wetlands. Heat stroke is a real danger with “feels like” temperatures of around 50 degrees Celsius possible in the current humid conditions, the weather office warns.

Mergers in the telecommunications industry have resulted in poor network quality and rising prices, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said on Tuesday.

Mid-sea airport for Hua Hin would cater to the rich

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming Thailand into a global aviation hub. The plans involve a nationwide overhaul and expansion of Thailand’s airport infrastructure to support both domestic and international travel.

And while Hua Hin’s existing airport wasn’t mentioned in the plans specifically, another interesting development for the region was. Contractors ordered to speed up work on Rama II

Contractors building the elevated motorway on Rama II Road, which has been the source of notorious bottlenecks, have been ordered to complete the job no later than mid-next year.

Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit summoned the contractors to a meeting on Monday to discuss the cause of their construction delays after Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said he wanted the contractors to clear the road before the Songkran holidays. Continued …

Swiss man’s visa revocation requested

The commander of Region 8 Police in Phuket, Lt. Gen. Surapong Thanomjit has announced that Phuket police have made an official request to the Immigration Police to revoke the visa of 45-year-old Urh ‘David’ Fehr – he’s the Swiss citizen who is alleged to have attacked a female Thai doctor at the beachfront step of his villa in Cape Yamu.

30 rainmaking planes to battle drought, pollution

The government plans to deploy 30 aircraft nationwide for cloud-seeding operations to induce artificial rain to battle air pollution and ease dry weather conditions in the main crop-growing areas.

The annual royal rainmaking program began on Thursday, with seven centers set up across the country to coordinate efforts in all 77 provinces for operations in March and April, the government said. Continued …

Motorists to pay more for expressway travel from today

Toll fees for Bangkok’s Chalong Rat (Ramindra-At Narong) and Burapha Withi expressways will be more expensive from today.

The Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) announced earlier this month that the fee for 4-wheel vehicles on the Chalong Rat Expressway will increase by 5 baht to 45 baht. Toll fees for six to 10-wheelers, meanwhile, will also be 5 baht more expensive, going from 60 to 65 baht, while those for vehicles with more than 10 wheels will be 90 baht, up from 80 baht. Economy improves slightly but overall recovery remains slow

The Thai economy in January showed signs of improvement from the previous month, but, overall, economic expansion remained slow, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) said on Thursday.

BOT spokesperson Chayawadee Chaianant said contributing factors include increasing foreign arrivals and direct foreign investment, while the value of exports, excluding gold, also rose after contracting the previous month. Continued …

Analysts are forecasting a weakened Thai baht due to factors including poor economic performance, high freight costs, and disagreements over interest rate reductions. The baht is anticipated to fluctuate within the range of 36-36.50 to the U.S. dollar this month.

The Royal Thai Consulate in Sydney has announced it will stop issuing “sticker visas” and go live with eVisa online applications from March 19. The Sydney Consulate will only accept applications from people who live in NSW from that date.

You can apply until March 9 the previous way. As of today, there is no mention of any visa fee increases on their website.

What a difference 30 minutes makes. That’s how long it takes to sail by public ferry from Phuket to Koh Yao Yai. You’ll have heard of the first island; Thailand’s most popular and overdeveloped holiday hub. But the latter, not so much.

Rama II Road upgrades will be completed in 2025, government says

There is an end in sight to the ongoing construction of the main route between Bangkok and the south of Thailand. The Department of Highways has confirmed that the long-awaited upgrades to Rama II Road, a key artery to Thailand’s southern region, are set to be completed by 2025.

Thai forest area in decline, matching world trend

The world’s total forest areas have shrunk by nearly 20 million square kilometres in the past three decades, from 42.03 million sq.km. reported in 1992, to 40.44 million sq.km. in 2021, according to World Bank data, which was last updated in October 2023.

Thailand, meanwhile, does not make the World Bank’s top 10, or even top 20 list of the largest share of world forests. Data from the Royal Forest Department indicates that the kingdom had a total forest area of 162,909 sq.km. in 2023, a figure that has gradually dropped in recent years. Continued …
