Huay Mongkol Temple Mother’s Day draping draws crowd

Crowds gathered at Wat Huay Mongkol Saturday evening to take part in the 12th annual draping ceremony of the giant Luang Pu Thuat statue, held to mark Mother’s Day and honor Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother’s 93rd birthday.

More than 1,000 Thai and foreign visitors joined the ceremony, carrying a saffron-yellow cloth measuring 3 meters wide and 247 meters long in a clockwise procession before draping it over the statue, which bears the royal cypher “Sor Kor.” Continued …

South-bound trains resume normal services after Saturday’s derailment

The State Railway of Thailand has resumed its normal south-bound train services after removing three derailed carriages and repairing damaged tracks in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

The SRT said Sunday night that the removal of the three derailed passenger carriages in Kui Buri district of Prachuap Khiri Khan was complete and the damaged tracks were repaired. All south-bound trains could resume normal operations. Continued …

    The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

    Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

Express Train Derails in Kui Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan

An express train traveling from Padang Besar to Bangkok Apiwat Station derailed this morning, leaving nine passengers injured, including a Buddhist monk and a young girl.

Tourist Stabbed in Patong Over 60-Baht Fruit Dispute

A disagreement over the price of fruit has left a foreign tourist in hospital with a serious stab wound after an incident in Patong in the early hours yesterday. Officers arrived to find the victim, from Azerbaijan, lying on the pavement with a deep abdominal wound. He was rushed to Patong Hospital for emergency treatment.

Saengduean Lek Chailert was five years old when she saw an elephant for the first time. It was in chains, lumbering past her home in rural Thailand on its way to help loggers pull trees from the forest. Back then, she saw the giant mammals like everyone else – as animals that served humans. But that changed the day she heard a scream from the forest.

Chailert was 16 when she heard the terrible noise. Prosecutors indict 23 in Bangkok building collapse

Thai prosecutors yesterday indicted 23 suspects, including the head or Italian-Thai Development Plc, and a Chinese state-owned firm for violations that led to the collapse of the State Audit Office tower in Bangkok during the March 28 earthquake.

The partially built 30-story tower in Chatuchak district was the only building to collapse from tremors emanating from the powerful 7.7 magnitude quake in neighboring Myanmar. At least 95 people — almost all of them construction labourers — were killed in the incident. Continued …

Thai consumer confidence slips further

Thai consumer confidence dropped for a sixth consecutive month in July to its lowest level in 31 months, due mainly to concerns over US tariffs, a lagging economy, and government instability, a survey showed yesterday.

According to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, “Some industries, like diamond and gemstone exporters, may be asked by buyers to bear part of the cost burden, such as half of the tariff. The electronics sector, which employs roughly 600,000 people, has started to freeze hiring and study partial manufacturing relocation to countries with lower costs and higher production efficiency than Thailand, in a bid to minimize the impact of US tariffs, says the Electronics & Computer Employers Assn.

Sampan Silapanad, president of the association, said while electronics manufacturers are unlikely to completely pull out of Thailand, partial manufacturing relocation is possible, especially for companies that already have production facilities in several countries, giving them more flexibility. “These might help to make Hua Hin the “City of Happiness”: Turn the so-called “entertainment” areas (Walking St, Wonderland, Soi 80, etc.) into genuine family oriented bar/restaurant/cafe entertainment areas; keep the “seafood” wooden piers; have a bridge over Phetkasem road in downtown area to enable safe crossing; encourage fair taxi fares, instead of the “cartel” rip-off; stop the encroachment of food places on HH beach; stop dangerous windsurf and jetskis near the shore on HH beach.” – AJB

Local authorities in Hua Hin have launched a dengue fever prevention campaign aimed at reducing the risk of outbreaks through stronger community involvement and coordination.

Heavy rain and strong winds expected across Thailand

The strong southwest monsoon continues to dominate the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, while the monsoon trough stretches across upper Myanmar and upper Laos, the Thai Meteorological Department said today.

Thailand to host FIVB Women’s World Volleyball Championship in August

For the first time in history, Thailand will host the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship, marking a significant milestone, as the event will also be held in Southeast Asia for the first time.

The tournament is set to take place from Aug. 22 to Sept. 7 across four major cities: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Nakhon Ratchasima. Thailand Rejects 0% Tax Deal with US, Cites Risk to Local Farmers

Thailand has rejected a 0% tax agreement with the U.S., citing significant potential impacts on its agriculture sector. The government is instead launching a 200-billion-baht (£4.5 billion) soft loan scheme to support private sectors and farmers.

Deputy Finance Minister Julaphan Amornwiwat affirmed the country’s firm stance, stating the 0% tax proposal is untenable due to international obligations and the vulnerable nature of the domestic agriculture sector. Thailand says nearing deal with US to lower 36% import tariff

Thailand is close to an agreement with the United States to lower a threatened 36% tariff on its exports ahead of the Aug. 1 deadline, according to Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, who expects trade talks to conclude within days.

The Southeast Asian nation will submit additional clarifications and final details of its proposal to U.S. trade officials in the coming days, Pichai said yesterday. A deal is expected to be announced before the new tariff rate takes effect, as Thailand has already provided the Washington with “almost everything” requested. Continued …

Will Indonesia regret its trade deal with Trump?

Be careful what you wish for, lest it come true. That ancient proverb comes to mind when considering the eagerness of America’s trade partners around the world to negotiate deals with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. Four countries already have, with Indonesia the latest to do so – and possibly the first to regret it.

The United States has announced a complex, tiered tariff regime, including a 25% tariff on labor-intensive goods such as textiles and footwear, a 40% tariff on goods suspected of being “transshipped” or having content of Chinese origin, and a 50% tariff on so-called “strategic sectors”, including aluminium, copper, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals. No more changes to minimum wage this year, says minister

The Ministry of Labor has confirmed there will be no further increases to the minimum wage this year, saying the next shift will take place in 2026. Minister Pongkawin Jungrungruangkit said yesterday that two wage adjustments have already taken place this year.

The minimum wage is usually only adjusted once a year, he said after a meeting of the national wage committee, which includes representatives of government, business and labor. Continued …

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, has unveiled its 2026 strategy under the theme “Value is the New Volume”— ushering in “The New Thailand” and signaling a shift to redefine Thai tourism through quality, balance, and sustainability.

Sorawong Thienthong, minister of Tourism and Sports, said that despite global tourism facing several challenges in 2024, Thailand remains a leading destination, having welcomed more than 18.08 million international visitors and generated 1.4 trillion baht in revenue so far this year. Russian arrivals to top last year’s figure

Despite U.S. sanctions and intense tourism competition, the Russian market this year is expected to exceed the 1.74 million visitors recorded in 2024, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Thai sausages sizzle in global rankings

TasteAtlas, a global platform dedicated to cataloging local cuisines, has ranked Sai Krok Isan and Sai Ua among the top 50 most delicious sausages worldwide. Topping the list is Salsiccia, an Italian sausage made from minced pork, pork fat, salt, pepper, and a variety of spices like fennel seeds, cumin, garlic, and chilli.

Thai villages win big for green tourism push

Thailand’s grassroots tourism projects just bagged six major accolades from the Pacific Asia Travel Assn. (PATA). Deputy government spokesperson Sasikarn Watthanachan credited the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) and its community network partners for putting Thailand’s local experiences on the global stage.

U Power inaugurates smart battery-swapping station in Thailand

U Power (UCAR) has launched Southeast Asia’s first operational smart battery-swapping station in Phuket. The Thailand station is said to integrate U Power’s UOTTA battery-charging and swapping system technology to improve the transmission of data and station control logic.

The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

    Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. Heavy rain forecast in Hua Hin throughout the week

Residents and visitors in Hua Hin are being advised to prepare for a prolonged spell of wet weather, with heavy rainfall expected across the city for much of the coming week.

According to the Thai Meteorological Department’s 7-day forecast, Hua Hin is likely to see heavy rain every day through Saturday , with rainfall affecting between 40% and 60% of the area each day. Wind speeds are forecast to range from 15 to 22 km/h, blowing predominantly from the west-southwest, while wave heights along the coast are expected to reach up to two meters. Continued …

Sunbears to elephants: life at a Thai wildlife hospital

The patient lay prone on the operating table. An IV line snaking from his left leg, near the wound from the tranquilizer dart that sedated him. Yong, a pig-tailed macaque rescued from a life harvesting coconuts, was being treated at Thailand’s only NGO-run wildlife hospital.

Thailand Braces for Downpours as ‘War Room’ Springs into Action

Thailand has activated a round-the-clock “war room” for real-time monitoring and disaster management as a powerful storm approaches. This measure comes after warnings from the Thai Meteorological Department about heavy rain expected in several northern provinces due to Typhoon Wipha’s proximity to northern Vietnam today and tomorrow.

Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai announced that the north and northeast should prepare for intense rainfall Tomorrow and Wednesday, potentially causing a rise in the Mekong River’s levels. More than half of edible flowers contaminated with pesticides

Two studies have found that more than half of sampled edible flowers in Thailand were contaminated with hazardous pesticides. The findings were presented recently at the 33rd Medical Academic Meeting held at the Impact Forum in Muang Thong Thani, Nonthaburi.

The first study was conducted by the Food Quality and Safety Office, under the Department of Medical Sciences, in collaboration with officials from the department’s offices in Chiang Rai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Songkhla, and Chonburi. Survey finds public blames monks’ misconduct for Buddhism’s decline

The National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) has released the findings of a new public opinion survey titled “Crisis in Buddhism!”, revealing widespread concerns among Thai Buddhists over the state of the clergy.

Conducted by NIDA Poll between July 14–16, the survey gathered responses from 1,310 Buddhists aged 18 and above across all regions, education levels, occupations, and income brackets nationwide. Thailand is on the brink of facing trade woes, no matter whether the U.S. imposes steep or gentler reciprocal tariffs on Thai imports.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s threatening reciprocal tariff policy has not only sparked concerns over sales of more expensive Thai goods in the American market but has also prompted businesses and the government to take a serious look into problems in the export sector and possible changes that may ensue amid uncertainties surrounding Washington’s trade policy. Thailand ‘can’t match’ Vietnam’s US tariff proposals

Thailand o the United States as Vietnam did, warns Somjai Phagaphasvivat, an expert in international economics, who added that Vietnam was able to remove tariffs on all U.S. imports because it has free trade agreements (FTAs) with 27 countries, which have already reduced most of Vietnam’s import tariffs to zero. In contrast, Thailand is unlikely to do the same, because it has FTAs with fewer countries than Vietnam does, he said.

“Nevertheless, one thing we must consider is that, at some point, we may have to do what Vietnam did in the future. We will need to enhance our competitiveness, and when the time comes and we have more FTAs with other countries, we’ll be able to open up fully,” said Somjai. Continued …

Thailand is cementing its reputation as a leading international filming destination, with foreign film productions injecting 2.866 billion baht into the national economy during the first six months of 2025. Tourism revival goes into reverse

Over the past three years, Thai tourism has been struggling to regain the peak it once reached prior to the pandemic, while neighboring countries Malaysia and Vietnam have already surpassed their performance in 2019, recording 37 million and 17 million tourist arrivals, respectively.

The closest opportunity occurred in 2024 when Thailand welcomed 35.5 million foreign tourists, an increase of 26% year-on-year. However, repeating the success of 2019 when 39.9 million foreign tourists arrived and spending hit 1.9 trillion baht is unlikely to occur in 2025, given that Thailand only attracted 16.6 million foreign arrivals in the first half, dipping 4.6% year-on-year. Suvarnabhumi Airport to Introduce Indoor Smoking Rooms by End of July

The Department of Disease Control has revealed detailed plans for new prototype indoor smoking rooms at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport. US to Hike Visa Fees by $250, Sparking Tourism Industry Outcry

The U.S. government is poised to introduce a substantial new fee on temporary visa applications, adding an extra $250 to the existing charges. Section of Soi 94 closed to Saturday for repair work

Road resurfacing work has resumed on Soi 94 after months of delays, with a section of the road temporarily closed to traffic until July 12, Hua Hin City has announced.

The closure affects the stretch between the junction in front of the 7-Eleven and the junction at Soi Charoen Pattana 2, near Craft, Scruffy’s, and Pizza Garden. The road will be closed daily from 9am to 4pm through to Friday to allow for the installation of drainage pipes, which form part of the ongoing reinforced concrete resurfacing project. Continued …

Thailand Tightens Grip on Ride-Hailing with Tough New Rules

Hua Hin to host snooker tournament starting Monday

Hua Hin is set to welcome some of the country’s top snooker players beginning Monday as the city hosts the “TKC Hua Hin Cup 2025”, a professional-ranking snooker tournament. Road work on Soi 94 still in turmoil

Hua Hin City has held an urgent meeting in a bid to speed up the delayed construction of Soi 94, a key road project that has caused months of disruption for local residents and businesses.

Prayad Marksaeng crowned Toyota Senior Championship winner in Hua Hin

Local golf pro Prayad Marksaeng clinched the championship title at the Toyota Senior Championship/Zenn Cup 2025, the third stop on the 2025 Thai Senior Tour. Prayad, 59, finished with a 14-under-par total of 202, earning him the winner’s cheque of 120,000 Thai baht.

On the final day at the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course, Prayad delivered a flawless performance, shooting a bogey-free 6-under-par 66. He started strong with birdies on his first three holes, adding three more on holes 8, 11, and 16 to secure his first win on the Thai Senior Tour this year. Continued …

Alcohol sales easing awaits ministry nod

The committee on alcohol beverage control has acknowledged that the easing of alcohol bans on Buddhist holy days has yet to be extended to ordinary retail shops, pending clarification from the Ministry of Interior.

Dr. Nipon Chinanonwait, director of the Office of Alcohol Control Committee under the Ministry of Public Health, said the committee has yet to receive a response from the Interior Ministry regarding the definition of “place of business”, particularly regarding ordinary shops. Continued …

Weekend sees more heavy rain across Thailand in seasonal deluge

Thailand’s Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning for 57 provinces to prepare for heavy rainfall over the weekend. The northeastern and northern regions, as well as Bangkok and surrounding areas, are expected to experience significant rainfall, covering 60%-80% of these areas.

The southern region (east coast) will experience thunderstorms across 40% of the area, mainly affecting Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Temperatures will range between 23-25°C at the lowest and 32-35°C at the highest. Continued …

Thailand delays some requirements of new cannabis rules

Thailand’s health ministry has postponed the enforcement of new cannabis regulations by 30–60 days, responding to public concern and allowing more time for adaptation. Under the upcoming rules, sellers will need official permits and must document every cannabis flower sale.

U.S. President Donald Trump said his July 9 trade deadline was not a fixed date, telling reporters at the White House that it could be sooner or later than that date, when wider U.S. tariffs are set to be re-imposed if deals are not reached.

Thailand’s BOI Approves $870 Million in New Investment Projects

The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) has approved investment applications worth a total of 28.6 billion baht (US$870 million) in digital infrastructure and travel sector projects, as well as improved incentives for the use of local content in the manufacturing of electric vehicles (EV) and hybrids, as well as electrical appliances (E&E).

The largest project approved is Stratus Technology Co.’s plan to invest 23.7 billion baht to build a Tier 3 data center with an IT load of approximately 203 megawatts (MW). Thai-Cambodian border closure could lead to a 60-billion-baht decline in border exports if the situation persists until the end of the year, the Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) warned yesterday.

Phuket tourism operators fear discovery of devices may deter tourists

Despite the introduction of heightened security measures following the discovery of several suspected explosive devices in two southern tourist provinces on Thursday, tourism operators are still concerned the incident will reinforce negative perceptions concerning safety in Thailand, though none have reported cancellations.

Phuket authorities have announced a sweeping upgrade to security protocols across the province following the discovery of suspicious objects resembling explosive devices in high-profile locations.
