Thailand Weighs Crypto Payment Zones for Tourists in Phuket, Hua Hin

Cryptocurrency experts support the government’s idea of investigating the use of Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies for payments in tourist destinations such as Hua Hin or Phuket.

They see this as a positive move that will encourage a more systematic approach to the use of cryptocurrencies and make it easier for foreigners to spend large sums of money, for example when buying condos or houses, without having to carry large amounts of cash. Thailand is seen as ripe for this move, with examples from over a hundred countries that have designated certain cities for cryptocurrency use, including in the U.S., Switzerland, Argentina and Dubai. Farmers begin burning crops as annual pollution starts in Thailand

Air pollution soared as rogue farmers began their annual crop burning in Thailand. Thick smoke drifted from burning rice fields and shrouded buildings and roads in northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima province on Dec. 17. Local authorities dispatched fire trucks as the blaze spread from farmlands toward nearby residential areas.

Dr. Taweechai Wisanuyothin, director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Control Region 9, said: “Smoke from industrial factories and power plants, vehicle exhaust, and open burning contribute to PM 2.5 fine dust. This particulate matter can enter the bloodstream through the respiratory system and infiltrate internal organs.” Continued and video …

Severe air pollution continues to affect 21 provinces across Thailand, with Mahachai in Samut Sakhon facing the most significant challenges due to high levels of PM2.5. Officials have warned residents in Bangkok and its surrounding areas to brace for worsening air quality over the next few days.

The Pollution Control Department’s Air Pollution Resolution Communication Center reported yesterday that PM2.5 levels, particulate matter measuring 2.5 micrometers or smaller, were recorded across the country. The 24-hour average levels ranged from 7 to 57.5 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), with the national standard set at a maximum of 37.5 µg/m³. Continued …

Is Bangkok air good to breathe?

Bangkok, the bustling capital of Thailand, is frequently grappling with air pollution, which has become a growing concern for both residents and visitors. The city’s air quality often reaches levels considered hazardous to health, especially during the cooler months from November to February, when temperature inversions trap pollutants close to the ground.

The primary contributors to air pollution in Bangkok are vehicle emissions, industrial activities, and open burning of agricultural waste, particularly during the annual burning season in neighboring regions. Traffic congestion is a significant factor, with thousands of vehicles on the road, emitting exhaust fumes that contribute to the high levels of particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the air. Data paints economy as ‘black hole’

I am known for being pessimistic about the Thai economy. Apart from encouraging official economic growth figures of 1.6% in Q1, 2.2% in Q2, and 3.0% in Q3, I do not think anyone can be optimistic about the economy. It is obvious that GDP data and the actual economic situation do not go hand in hand.

It is beyond my comprehension that the non-performing loan (NPL) level rose 14.1% in Q3 while the economy expanded 3.0%. Shouldn’t it be the opposite when debtor’s income rises? Continued …

6 Red Flags You’re About To Eat At A Tourist Trap Restaurant

For those who travel to eat, meals while away from home are precious. A marquee meal can be the most memorable highlight of a trip, and when you only get so many per day with no do-overs, there is literally no room for mediocre food. And even harder to stomach is when it’s expensive, inauthentic, or — even worse, in a world with such diverse cuisine — boring. In other words, a tourist trap restaurant.

According to a study by online passport photo service provider PhotoAiD, the top three criteria that make a place a tourist trap are above-average pricing, amenities tailored for tourists, and a lack of cultural authenticity. Continued …

What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Thailand

I first visited Thailand a few years ago – a month of solo travel to avoid the rainy British winter. My first stop, Bangkok. I ate deep fried insects at Khao San Road and visited Siriraj Medical Museum, which exhibits grisly medical specimens in a decidedly maximalist fashion. I traveled south to visit a few of Thailand’s islands with a friend, then north to Chiang Mai and the small mountain town of Pai, which is popular with backpackers.

Last year I returned to Thailand on a hiking and kayaking trip, and visited the south of the country. We went to Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, a vast lake in the heart of Khao Sok National Park, where narrow karst islands jut out from the turquoise water. We spent the night in a floating bungalow, soaking up the tranquility and jumping into kayaks whenever we wanted to explore. Continued …

A substantial amount of water evaporates as part of the cooling process and must be constantly replaced. According to a NPR 2024 report, data centers use around “300,000 gallons of water a day to keep cool, roughly equivalent to water use in 100,000 homes.” Continued …

Vogue Magazine profiles Hua Hin’s Chiva-Som

When was the last time you didn’t have your phone while waiting for someone in public? I asked myself this over and over again in my head as I sat at Chiva-Som Hua Hin upon my arrival, waiting for my health and wellness adviser. For a split second, I felt anxious, lost, and lonely at the same time — but also relieved. Oh, so relieved. It was as if Chiva-Som’s no-phones policy finally granted me the permission to free myself from what society deems the norm: that your phone is a signifier of social adequacy, a tool for camouflage, a natural extension of its owner. Thailand’s property sector will benefit from the China + One policy of U.S. president-elect Donald Trump, which experts say will drive foreign firms to shift their manufacturing bases to ASEAN and Thailand to evade tariff walls and boost land sales in the industrial sector next year, property consultant JLL Thailand says.

The policy, coupled with growing geopolitical tensions in several parts of the world, will direct foreign manufacturers to high-potential destinations such as Thailand’s EEC (Eastern Economic Corridor), Michael Glancy, JLL’s managing director for Thailand and Indonesia said on Wednesday. Thai factory output down 0.91% y/y in October, seen rising in 2025

Thailand’s manufacturing production index dropped 0.91% in October from a year earlier, the industry ministry said on Wednesday, falling less than analysts’ expectations. The figure compared with a forecast fall of 1.85% for October in a Reuters poll, and followed an annual drop of 3.51% in September.

Factory output for the first 10 months of 2024 contracted 1.63% from a year earlier, and the ministry forecast it would fall 1.6% for the full year. Output has been weighed down by weaker car production and high household debt that has crimped domestic spending, the ministry said. Continued …

Medical Tourism: Can China compete with Thailand?

China is aiming to boost its medical tourism industry, but faces stiff competition from neighboring countries like Thailand, South Korea, and Taiwan. While China boasts rapid innovation and technological development in healthcare, it lacks the established reputation and branding enjoyed by its neighbors.

Thailand, in particular, has carved a niche for itself in medical tourism due to its high-quality services, affordable prices, and emphasis on hospitality. South Korea has also established a strong presence in medical tourism, particularly for cosmetic surgery, and is aiming to attract 700,000 foreign patients annually by 2027. Continued …

Street food in Bangkok’s Chinatown

Bangkok’s memorable street food tours

One of the most delectable, and difficult, articles to write about in this country is on the subject of street food. Where do you start and where do you end?

One of my most enjoyable evenings when we moved to Bangkok many years back was spent sitting on a plastic stool by a noisy road and relishing a plate of pla pao (fish marinated in rock salt and cooked over a charcoal) with a spicy chili sauce washed down with a glass of chilled Chang beer. Tensions have erupted in Thailand’s government as Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga lock horns over the nation’s clean energy future. A disagreement, which has reportedly been simmering for weeks, boiled over Tuesday, leading to the abrupt cancellation of a joint press conference following a National Energy Policy Board meeting.

According to Government House insiders, the PM pressed for the Energy Ministry to fast-track plans to acquire 2,000 megawatts of clean energy from private providers via the Direct Power Purchase Agreement (Direct PPA). In stark contrast, Pirapan ordered the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to hold off on clean energy purchases, effectively stalling the policy’s second phase. Continued …

But this is not the first instance of methanol poisoning. Experts say it is widespread but often goes undiagnosed, and describe it as a “forgotten crisis”. Continued …

It suggested the council immediately withdraw the lawsuit for the sake of patients.

Saree Aongsomwang, secretary-general of the Thailand Consumer Council (TCC), on Saturday expressed concern about the conflict between the Medical Council of Thailand and the Pharmacy Council of Thailand after the Supreme Administrative Court accepted the council’s complaint against the NHSO policy, which provides free medicine at pharmacies for symptoms on the list. “They sent their goods here to be repackaged … and then sent them onto the U.S.,” said Cheng, director of recruitment agency Agensi Pekerjaan TSM, recalling the frantic scramble to find staff to accommodate the influx. Continued …

Laos-China railway boosts trade and tourism, but also Beijing’s clout

In the Laotian border town of Boten, the arrival of a sleek, modern train on a route that connects with southern China is a sign of growing trade and tourism links between one of Southeast Asia’s poorest countries and its giant neighbor. But it also signifies a marked rise in Chinese influence in Laos, and the drawing of the country closer into Beijing’s orbit.

How Japan Contributed to the Development of Thailand

Looking at the past seven decades of Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Thailand was like looking at how Thailand modernized herself. Japan has dispatched 12,000 technical experts and 1,100 volunteers to Thailand over the decades, while Thailand sent 33,000 technical trainees to Japan.

The past two decades or so, in particular, saw key infrastructures developed, partly thanks to Japan’s Yen Loan (or low-interest loan) and made possible the completion of Suvarnabhumi International Airport (2006) and the MRT Blue Line (2004). Destination Thailand Visa: a hugely successful move but with ongoing ambiguities

Nostradamus the seer was very wise not to include the still-evolving DTV in his futuristic predictions. Still, over the course of the last four months, we have learned a lot: Thai embassies and consulates worldwide interpret the published rules and required documentation at their own discretion.

In general, the rules have softened so that applicants can apply not only from their main base, but wherever they are on a visa run. But illegal applications from within Thailand remain a risky non-no. After all, your Thai immigration record will show when you are – or, in fact, are not – resident in the kingdom. Continued …

How Rolled Ice Cream Made Its Way From Thailand To Worldwide Fame

Once upon a time, social media was captivated by Thai rolled ice cream. Unlike your typical scoop, this sweet treat began as a liquid base, spread on a frosty pan, chopped, mixed with fresh fruits or toppings, and rolled into delicate strips right before your eyes. It was a show served in a cup with colorful toppings that quickly became an Instagram sensation.

The rolled ice cream trend, while not new, has been a street favorite in Thailand since its debut in 2009 as “I-TIM-PAD” by Kajitsa Premwimol. Gaining popularity across Thailand and neighboring countries, the concept made its way to the U.S. in 2015, when Premwimol and two friends opened I-CE-NY in New York City. Continued …

Key points on the new funding deal from the UN climate talks agreement

In the wee hours Sunday at the United Nations climate talks, countries from around the world reached an agreement on how rich countries can cough up the funds to support poor countries in the face of climate change.

It’s a far-from-perfect arrangement, with many parties still deeply unsatisfied but some hopeful that the deal will be a step in the right direction. World Resources Institute President and CEO Ani Dasgupta called it “an important down payment toward a safer, more equitable future,” but added that the poorest and most vulnerable nations are “rightfully disappointed that wealthier countries didn’t put more money on the table when billions of people’s lives are at stake.” Continued …

We are passionate about solar energy. We had our own solar system installed. After a few days, we found it so inspiring we were hooked and decided to start a business. Personally, we would like to see every house on the planet equipped with solar power.

We had been hearing of people with less than positive experiences after having their system installed, so decided we should provide a professional service to ensure people do not experience anything other than excellence in their new venture, whilst making a significant contribution to the environment.

The solar industry is rapidly expanding, largely due to falling prices, along with peoples’ desire to see their monthly electricity bill reduced, as the cost of electricity steadily increases. Couple this with more and more people being aware and taking action against global warming, solar power is one of the obvious ways to help achieve this.

Therefore, it not only becomes a financial saving, but also helps the environment for future generations. A win-win situation for all.

All of our products (Inverters/Panels/Batteries/Hardware) are sourced locally from distributors in Thailand. This facilitates quick and easy backup or replacement, should it ever be needed.

It is hard not to emphasize enough that all of our products are genuine items. Our solar panels are backed up with certificates from the manufacturer. We will never sell counterfeit products. We only install PEA approved equipment.

Chinese buyers in Chiang Mai spark Thai fears for future stability

In a recent surge of property acquisitions in Chiang Mai, Chinese buyers are acquiring homes and other investments, fueling both economic growth and local unease. In the heart of Thailand’s cultural capital, signs in Chinese adorn shops and cafes, marking a stark shift driven largely by Chinese nationals who now invest heavily in the area.

This buying spree, primarily focused in Hang Dong, San Kamphaeng, and San Sai, totaled investments from Chinese buyers of up to 5 billion baht in recent years. Houses priced from 3 million baht have proven particularly appealing, given the comparative affordability against China’s urban property markets, where prices can far exceed $700,000. Continued …

Trump tariffs ‘could cost Thailand Bt160 billion’

Thailand risks missing its economic growth target next year if U.S. President-elect Donald Trump follows through with his pledge to raise tariffs, as it could hurt the country’s exports and weaken the baht, according to a study.

The economy could potentially lose about 160 billion baht ($4.6 billion), shaving off about 0.9 percentage points from a projected 3% gross domestic product growth rate next year, Thanavath Phonvichai, president of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, told a briefing on Wednesday in Bangkok. He expressed support for the development of entertainment complexes, nuclear energy, and the strategic use of artificial intelligence (AI) to drive growth.

This neutrality allows Thailand to serve as a platform for dialogue, helping to facilitate agreements between the two economic giants. Continued …

Is the Thai baht at risk with Trump’s return to the White House?

The Thai baht is on track to experience significant vulnerability amid changing political dynamics, particularly due to Donald Trump’s resurgence in the White House. Given Thailand’s high dependency on trade — boasting a trade volume that is 129% of its GDP — the baht’s position is precarious, especially as U.S. monetary policy, under the hawkish Federal Reserve, threatens to further weaken it.

The rise of the dollar, fueled by Trump’s policies intended to enhance U.S. production, poses additional risks for trade-reliant economies, positioning Asian currencies, including the baht, for potential declines. Continued …

10 healthiest Thai food orders, according to a nutritionist

Traditional Thai food is made with flavorful, good-for-you ingredients. (Think: a colorful, vegetable-filled coconut curry made with dozens of health-boosting herbs and spices, served over an energizing pile of rice.) But, as with many cuisines, what you’ll find in most restaurants is a higher-sugar, higher-salt, and higher-fat spin on many Thai dishes.

There’s good news though: So many popular Thai options are still nutritious and filling (or at least can be with some slight order tweaks). After all, Thai cooking typically puts vegetables and other plant-based foods in the spotlight — and many options use coconut milk instead of cream and herbs instead of cheese, says dietitian Amy Gorin, owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in New York City.
