Seized drug assets to fund addict rehabilitation in Thailand

Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin endorsed initiatives to allocate seized assets from narcotic drug cases toward funding the rehabilitation of drug addicts.

Increasing foreign ownership limit for condos would boost economy

The Thai Real Estate Assn. is backing the government’s proposal to increase the foreign ownership limit for condominiums, as it expects such a move would boost the domestic economy, its president, Meesak Chunharakchot, said on Tuesday.

Foreign Condo Transfers in Thailand Hit 6-Year High in Q1 2024

Acting director of the Real Estate Information Center Vichai Viratkaphan revealed that ongoing observation of condominium ownership transfers by foreigners has shown that the country’s reopening to foreign tourists since 2022 has had a positive impact on the growth of tourism.

The Thai government considers the tourism industry a key economic growth driver, combined with domestic factors that have greatly increased the demand for foreign condominium purchases. New foreign business investment rises 58% in first 5 months

Investment by new foreign businesses rose 58% in the first five months of this year compared with the same period last year, the Department of Business Development announced on Tuesday.

Newly registered foreign firms rose 16% to 317 and invested a combined 71.702 billion baht in Thailand from January to May 2024. They hired 1,212 Thai employees, a fall of 60% from the 2,999 Thais hired by new foreign firms during the same period of last year. Continued … 

Thailand’s auto production falls 16.2% in May

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI)’s Automotive Industry Club announced on Tuesday that Thailand’s auto production in the month of May had dropped by 16.2% year on year to 126,161 vehicles.

Surapong Paisitpattanapong, vice president of the FTI’s auto club, said the drop in production in May compared to last year was mainly attributed to fewer pick-up trucks and sedans manufactured for the local market. Continued … 

Thailand imports shrimp from Ecuador amid local production crisis

Thailand, once the world’s leading shrimp exporter, now finds itself importing shrimp from Ecuador. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin directed the Department of Fisheries to investigate and report back in the next Cabinet meeting.

The nation, which used to produce and export 600,000 tons of shrimp annually, now produces only 200,000 tons. This significant decline has necessitated the importation of shrimp, primarily from Ecuador, leading to a drop in Thai shrimp prices and severe financial hardship for local shrimp farmers. Public cloud spending set to soar

Worldwide end-user spending on public cloud services is forecast to grow by 20.4% to $675 billion in 2024, from $561 billion in 2023, according to the latest forecast from Gartner Inc. The growth is being driven by demand for generative AI (GenAI) and application modernization.

Organizations in Thailand are expected to spend $1.8 billion on public cloud services, an increase of 30.1% from 2023, the technology research and consulting group said. Phraya Nakhon Cave pavilion’s 134th anniversary

A ceremony commemorating the 134th anniversary of the Kuha Karuhas Pavilion in the Phraya Nakhon Cave in Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, saw attendance from notable figures. Police rev up crackdown on illegal exhausts to silence street racers

Thailand mulls allowing foreigners to buy 75% of condo units

The Thai Cabinet has tasked the Interior Ministry with amending the Condominium Act to increase the foreign ownership limit in condominium projects from 49% to 75%. Additionally, they have been directed to modify the Land Act to allow foreigners to lease land for 99 years, up from the current 50 years.

Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul indicated on Friday that the Land Act requires minimal changes. The existing law already permits a 50-year lease with an option to extend for another 50 years. Thailand approves VAT on cheap imported goods

Thailand has approved the collection of 7% value-added tax (VAT) on imported goods sold for less than 1,500 baht (US$40.93) from July to December, a finance ministry official said on Friday.

Imported goods sold for less than 1,500 baht are currently exempt from VAT in Thailand. After December, there will be a law change to allow the revenue department to continue collecting VAT on such products. Continued …

Thai exports in May hit their highest value in 14 months, coming in at US$26.22 billion (961.75 billion baht) and marking a 7.2% increase.

Probe into missing oil-smuggling ships linked to police force

An investigation into officers involved with the three missing seized oil-smuggling vessels is underway after a leaked chat showed a connection between some police and the mastermind of the oil smuggling gang.

The three seized ships, containing 330,000 liters of smuggled oil, had been docked at the marine police pier in Chon Buri’s Sattahip district along with two other seized vessels on March 19. PM Tests Positive for Covid-19

The KP.2 strain of Covid-19 will become dominant in Thailand, according to a renowned virologist. It will be more transmissible and vaccines will be hard-pressed to keep up with its mutations, but its symptoms will not be more severe than those of previous strains of the virus.

Economist warns of further industry closures

Government expedites waterway upgrades

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives is moving to expedite the waterways improvement project, which it planned to honor His Majesty the King’s sixth cycle anniversary, which falls on July 28, government spokeswoman Kenika Ounjit said yesterday.

Under Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Thamanat Prompow, she said, the ministry is overseeing 72 projects to mark His Majesty’s 72nd birthday this year, which include dredging 24 irrigation canals and 21 reservoirs across the country, as well as the construction of 27 new water sources and irrigation systems. Woman in Hua Hin Arrested for Allegedly Organizing Fake Weddings

Thai cyber police have apprehended a woman believed to be at the center of an elaborate wedding scam in Hua Hin. Wimonrat, the alleged mastermind behind this matrimonial fraud, has left many couples high and dry after pocketing substantial deposits for venue and wedding preparations that never materialized.

Wimonrat, a 37-year-old resident of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, was a wanted individual with no less than three different arrest warrants issued against her. These date back to early 2021 from courts across Thailand, including Samut Prakan Provincial Court, Chon Buri District Court, and Thon Buri Criminal Court. Her deceitful actions have reportedly caused damages exceeding 150,000 baht (£3,500). Continued …

Following the pandemic-induced economic crisis of 2020-21, the new Thai government has been focused on boosting the rate of economic growth. Thailand’s economic growth has fallen more than Southeast Asian neighbors Indonesia or Vietnam due to its high dependence on exports and the tourism sector.
