Hua Hin’s Chiva-Som celebrating 30 years

“Venerable” might seem an odd word to describe a wellness resort. After all, they tend to promote the tireless pursuit of “eternal youth” or at least increased healthspan. But it feels apposite in the case of Chiva-Som.

Thirty years ago, when it first opened, the “spa scene” was a more binary affair than it is today: “fat farms” on the one hand, white-coated medical facilities on the other. Chiva-Som offered something different. Continued …

Hua Hin couple’s assault case finally settled

In an astonishing twist of fate, an elderly British couple have narrowly avoided what had seemed an inevitable prison sentence in Thailand. Instead, they’ve been handed 9,000 baht fines (£200), allowing them to plan their much-anticipated return to the UK.

Their ordeal began in 2020 when Des and Mary Byrne retired to Hua Hin, envisioning a peaceful, sun-soaked retirement. Instead, the dream rapidly unraveled into a nightmare due to a violent dispute over land access. Continued …

The deep South’s concerns can’t wait forever

The phone rings. I hold my breath. Every time there’s news of an attack in Narathiwat, my hometown, I call my dad to check. It’s a ritual now. One I wish I didn’t have to follow.

“Are you safe?” I ask, trying to sound calm. “We’re fine. I could hear the bomb – it was about two kilometers away from the house.” His voice is steady, almost resigned. No panic, just the exhaustion of someone who has lived through this for too long. Then, a pause. “Don’t come home yet. It’s not safe.” I was planning to go home this week. Continued …

Thai auto market suffers 10% slump in early 2025 sales

Thailand’s automotive market has faced a challenging start to 2025, with sales down by 10% in the first two months compared to the same period last year. Total sales reached approximately 97,000 units, with both industry giants Toyota and Isuzu, alongside electric vehicle maker BYD, experiencing notable declines.

This decision marks the third phase of the initiative, aimed specifically at fostering technology-driven spending habits among tech-savvy youths.

Why some foreign tourists and expats avoid madness of Songkran Festival in Pattaya

Some foreign tourists and expats prefer to stay away from Pattaya during Songkran, the Thai New Year water festival, due to the chaotic and intense celebrations. While many revel in the high-energy water fights and street parties, others find the constant soaking, overcrowded streets, and general mayhem overwhelming.

One major reason for avoidance is the sheer scale of the festival in Pattaya, which extends beyond the official April 13-15 dates and lasts up to a full week. Roads become impassable due to water battles, and even those who simply want to walk or commute risk getting drenched at any moment. For expats who live and work in the city, this can be a significant inconvenience. Continued …

Thailand Grapples with Escalating Challenges in Law Enforcement

Experts warn that the erosion of public trust in institutions and the judiciary further exacerbates the problem, making it increasingly difficult to restore order and stability. If left unaddressed, these systemic issues could undermine both Thailand’s domestic security and its standing on the international stage. Continued …

The 17 Best Places to Visit in Thailand

To describe Thailand as postcard perfect is underselling it. The country’s untamed beauty is as soaring as its limestone karsts, wild as its lush evergreen rainforests, and calming as its pristine beaches.

The shape of the country resembles an elephant head, which is fitting due to its beloved native population of Indian elephants. And with roughly 93% of the population identifying as Buddhist, the culture here is wonderfully rich. And the food! Many of the dishes here are spicy and common flavorful ingredients include lemongrass, coconut milk, basil, and — of course — chili peppers. Continued …

China’s EV makers are facing a reality check in Southeast Asia

On a recent Thursday morning in Hanoi, Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD began the day with a showroom devoid of customers. Just a few kilometers away, a dealership for upstart Vietnamese EV maker VinFast Auto was buzzing, with would-be buyers pouring over new models.

“We see an average of 20 customers every day during weekdays,” said Tran Trung Hieu, a VinFast salesman in black suit and tie. “That can double or triple on a weekend.” Continued …

White Lotus Effect Could Be a Disaster for Thailand’s Koh Samui

The Four Seasons positioning itself with The White Lotus is one of the smartest marketing partnerships in travel. It is a master class in old-school, top-of-funnel marketing, achieving something few luxury brands manage: catapulting into mainstream awareness while maintaining exclusivity.

My beef here is that much of the media coverage surrounding this phenomenon (and the launch of the new season set in Thailand) has been largely uncritical. The surge of attention is set to bring an influx of hyper-tourism to Koh Samui, a small Thai island already grappling with infrastructure challenges: namely water scarcity and issues with garbage processing. A beautiful island is in danger of being completely overloaded. Continued …

Ethics in Thailand’s elephant tourism?

An elephant experience is one of Thailand’s most popular tourist attractions; however, tourists should exercise caution and adopt ethical practices by refraining from touching the elephants when visiting elephant camps.

World Animal Protection Thailand has called on camps to stop using elephants to entertain tourists, specifically requesting that hands-on participation by tourists in bathing and feeding activities be banned. Continued …

Passing the buck on paying for emergency medical treatment in Thailand

An unfortunate British tourist Gatehouse is facing medical and repatriation costs of around 80,000 pounds (3 million baht) and much more if a private plane evacuation proves necessary. Her husband says their travel insurance proved worthless because they visited India before Thailand, a technicality that invalidated all claims.

Inevitably, the British embassy was contacted but there is no slush fund to cover non-insured tourists or expats. Indeed, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in London has in the past pointed out that British taxpayers cannot, and should not, subsidize overseas tragedies no matter how pitiful. Pad Thai: A wartime invention turned global culinary icon

Pad Thai, a dish now synonymous with Thai cuisine, has a fascinating origin rooted in necessity. During World War II, Thailand faced a severe food crisis. Rice, the nation’s staple, became scarce and expensive, putting pressure on the government to find an alternative to sustain its people.

This led to a creative solution by then-prime minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram, introducing a new national dish that would reduce rice consumption while fostering a sense of unity among Thais. That dish was Pad Thai. Continued …

Koh Mak: The tiny island that’s redefining travel to Thailand

As season three of The White Lotus prepares to thrust Thailand’s islands into the global spotlight, drawing fresh waves of visitors to the already bustling shores of Phuket and Koh Samui, a very different story is unfolding across the Gulf of Thailand. Here, a speck of an island named Koh Mak has quietly positioned itself as a model for sustainable tourism, offering a rare vision of what the future of travel in Thailand could be.

Heading toward Koh Mak’s southern shores by speedboat, my first impression was disarmingly simple: golden sand curving into clear shallows while coconut palms leaned toward the sea as though caught mid-bow. There were no high-rises, no blaring beach clubs. Instead, low-slung bungalows peeked through the trees and bicycles outnumbered cars on the island’s quiet roads. Continued …

Digital Nomad Paradise: Top 5 Destinations In Thailand

Like moths to a flame, it’s practically a given digital nomads will be flocking to Thailand at some point: Be it the lush nature, the higher quality of life (at cheaper prices), or the vibrant expat community, it’s the textbook definition of a workcation paradise: as a matter of fact, it is the top destination for remote workers in Asia.

Thailand: A Surfer’s secret stash of hidden waves

While it might not boast the legendary waves of Hawaii or Bali, Thailand has plenty to offer, especially for those just starting out or looking for a relaxed surf trip.

The best time to catch some waves depends on which coast you’re hitting. The Andaman Sea side, home to Phuket and Khao Lak, gets its best swells from May to October, thanks to the southwest monsoon. Over on the Gulf of Thailand, around Hua Hin and Rayong, the waves are smaller but still fun from October to December. Continued …

EGAT tasked with studying small modular nuclear reactors

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has been told to accelerate the study of nuclear power plants using small modular reactors (SMRs) to boost Thailand’s energy security. A source from the Energy Ministry said laws and regulations should be implemented to supervise private companies’ investment in SMRs in order to ensure safety.

The most difficult part, however, is creating an understanding with the public sector, a source said, adding that Thailand would look at setting up national nuclear power plants before allowing private investment. Continued …

The effects of Trump’s Ukraine deal

At the end of World War I, John Maynard Keynes was part of the British delegation to the Paris Peace Conference, where the victorious Allies dictated the peace terms for the defeated Central Powers. He emerged from the conference distraught. As he subsequently wrote in The Economic Consequences of the Peace, delegates’ focus on short-term political considerations, including the desire to “punish” Germany for its aggression, would come at the cost of long-term social and political stability in Europe. It is a warning worth remembering today. Continued …

Rising number of factory closures points to bleak future for Thai industries

Visa Agencies in Thailand: Balancing Immigration Assistance with Challenges

Visa agencies throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand, have long played a crucial role in easing the complex immigration processes for foreigners. However, changing regulations and technology are presenting new challenges to their operations.

Over the decades, the landscape of visa options expanded significantly, leading to a surge in demand for agency services to navigate the increasingly complex immigration regulations. Continued …

“Even though the council has amended some points in the bill, it has added some minor technicalities, such as the specification that only 10% of an entertainment venue will be a casino,” said Atavit Suwanpakdee, chairman of an advisory board to the Minister of Industry. “However, it is still unclear how many locations will be chosen and in which regions.” Continued …

Mercedes-Benz anticipates another gloomy Thai sales year

German luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) expects another tough year for the Thai car market, caused by difficulties for consumers in accessing car loans, as well as high interest rates, which led to a 23% decrease in newly registered premium cars last year.

The total number of registrations stood at 33,472 units. Mercedes-Benz also saw a 30% year-on-year drop in its car sales in Thailand in 2024 to 9,189 vehicles in 2024, the lowest level recorded in three years. Continued …

‘Rose-colored glasses’: The stressful reality of being a digital nomad

Working from a tropical paradise, taking calls with an ocean view, and then unwinding at the beach afterward sounds idyllic. But the day-to-day reality of the digital nomad life can be far more chaotic than what’s shown on social media.

When Deryn Russell and her partner were working remotely in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, enjoying the sunshine and surf, things started to go downhill. Their Starlink router refused to connect properly when Russell needed to log onto a video call for work and forced her partner, a video editor, to take the week off of work. Adding insult to injury, he also dealt with a bad bout of food poisoning and their laundry service lost all their clothes. Continued …

Phuket makes waves with water transport plan

Phuket is set to make a splash with an innovative plan to tackle its notorious traffic woes — by taking to the water. In a bid to ease the island’s increasing congestion, local officials gathered at Phuket Provincial Hall’s Smart Operations Center yesterday to explore the integration of water transport systems, with a focus on a pioneering “Boat Taxi” project.

Discussions centered around the impact of ongoing construction and the potential for bypass roads, with the Phuket Marine Office leading the charge on developing an aquatic alternative to ease the landlocked chaos. Continued …

What it’s like to sail Thailand’s wild Andaman Coast onboard a catamaran

I didn’t anticipate starting the day by accidentally slapping a jellyfish. Yet it’s hard to maintain a personal sense of space underwater when surrounded by dozens of these pastel-pink, deceptively ethereal creatures.

As they pulse and undulate around me in the serene waters of the Andaman Sea, my unintended victim floats away, seemingly unfazed — but that brush sends my limbs into uncontrollable panic, like branches buffeted by a hurricane. Continued …

Thai Beachfront Resorts Featured in White Lotus — Here’s What They’re Really Like

For everyone who watched the premiere of hite Lotus and is now planning a Thailand vacation — albeit one without the drama — staying at the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui is an obvious choice. The first season of White Lotus filmed at the Four Seasons Maui at Wailea in Hawaii; the second season shot at San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel in Sicily. The spike in tourism to both destinations (and hotels) even became known as “The White Lotus effect.”

But as a devoted fan of the show and repeat visitor to Thailand, I instead chose to start my White Lotus tour at Anantara BoPhut Koh Samui, because it’s the first hotel I spotted in the new season’s trailer. During my White Lotus-inspired trip, I stayed at three resorts where the new season filmed: Anantara BoPhut Koh Samui, Anantara Lawana Koh Samui, and Anantara Mai Khao Phuket. Continued …

This Tucked-Away Corner of Thailand Is One of Asia’s Most Exciting Wine Countries

With wine crafted everywhere from England to China, new wineries and regions are redefining what we think of as traditional wine country. One of the latest contenders? Thailand’s tropical wine region of Khao Yai, which sits just a two-and-a-half-hour drive north of bustling Bangkok (a high-speed rail slated for 2026 will make the trip even shorter)

Wealthy Bangkokers consider this their weekend country getaway, since it’s home to Thailand’s first national park, the UNESCO-listed Khao Yai National Park, as well as bucolic fields, farms, and wineries that are championing the notion of “tropical wine.” Continued …

The initiative aligns with Thailand’s upcoming Climate Change Act, expected to take effect in 2027, which will mandate responsibility from high-emission businesses and industries. Continued …
