Heatwave alert in Thailand with temperatures hitting 39 degrees Celsius

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning forecasting sweltering conditions across the country today, with peak temperatures expected to soar between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius. Despite the heat, there is a possibility of isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon, with some regions experiencing light rainfall.

The weather on the east coast is expected to be hot during the day, with a 20% chance of thunderstorms in areas like Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat. The temperatures are slightly cooler, with lows of 23 to 25 degrees Celsius and highs of 32 to 36 degrees Celsius. Continued …

Bangkok’s eastern and central bus terminals set for relocation

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit announced plans on Tuesday to move the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) and the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Mo Chit 2) to the Krung Thep Abhiwat Central Terminal. The intention behind the move is to offer more convenience to travelers, as the Central Terminal can be easily reached using the MRT electronic rail system.

In the proposed new location, both stations will be housed within a multi-story building, where different routes are catered for on each floor. An air-conditioned food center will also be situated in the main hall. The timeline for the planned relocation has not yet been confirmed. Continued …

Black panther spotted in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park

A black panther sighting near Phanoen Thung in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park has been reported by the Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP). The department disseminated photographs of the elusive animal on its Facebook page, sparking interest among wildlife enthusiasts.

The images, captured by a tourist named Sith Naowanirut on Feb. 25, were confirmed by park chief Mongkol Chaipakdee, who stated that the panther appeared unaffected by the tourist’s presence. Demolition ordered of illicit resorts on Khao Yai farmland

BMW to establish first Southeast Asian EV battery factory in Thailand

BMW Group Thailand has revealed plans to establish an electric vehicle (EV) battery factory in the country this year. This move is in response to China’s escalating EV investment and supply chains in Thailand. The factory, to be positioned in Rayong, will bolster the firm’s sales of battery EVs and plug-in hybrid EVs.

Almost 6 million tourists arrive in first eight weeks of 2024

Thailand welcomed 5,981,234 overseas visitors between Jan. 1 and Feb. 25, Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol announced on Tuesday. She added that these visitors have generated revenue of around 290.92 billion baht for Thai entrepreneurs.

In the first eight weeks of this year, China was the top source market for foreign tourists to Thailand with 1,114,316 arrivals, followed by Malaysia (759,828), Russia (397,006), South Korea (387,475), and India (293,129). Continued …

PM visits southern provinces to promote tourism

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has embarked on a three-day visit to the three Muslim-majority provinces of southern Thailand, specifically to promote tourism. Chiang Mai tops world’s most polluted cities due to rampant forest fires

Chiang Mai has been blanketed by worsening haze, catapulting it to the top of the list of the world’s 10 most polluted cities. The thick smog is a direct consequence of forest fires that have been burning unabated for approximately two weeks.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) detected a total of 1,420 hotspots on Monday alone. Of these, 193 were located in Chiang Mai. Satellite information revealed that the hotspots were distributed across various areas, with 490 in forest conservation zones, 375 in forest reserve areas, 237 in agricultural regions, 186 in land reform areas, and the remaining in community areas. Enormous Damage In Chiang Mai National Park Fire

Interior Minister Anutin Charnivarikul said yesterday he is closely following the forest fire at Ob Luang National Park in Chiang Mai’s Hot district, with this causing enormous damage both in the forested areas and triggering dust and smoke problems that has spread to many provinces.

Firefighters and helicopters halt huge Chiang Mai forest fire

Some 250 firefighters backed by two helicopters on Tuesday managed to halt a forest blaze that raged through 33,000 rai of Ob Luang National Park in Chiang Mai’s Hot district.

The fires were put out just a day after the Third Army Area deployed troops to help fight the blaze and deter local villagers from setting new fires in the vast national park. Tak province battles spreading wildfires across nine districts

Wildfires in the province of Tak have intensified, expanding across nine districts and prompting coordinated emergency responses to combat the flames and prevent hazardous smog, including the dangerous PM2.5 particles. The province’s governor Somchai Kitcharoenrungroj has mobilized all units for swift action to contain the wildfires within a limited area to minimize damage and reduce smoke haze.

A power bank exploded on an AirAsia flight mid-air, sending passengers into panic. The plane was flying from Bangkok to Nakhon Si Thammarat in the south of the country when flames and smoke were seen.

7-Eleven in Thailand Reports Record Income of 399 Billion Baht, plans expansion

CP All has revealed business profit results for 2023 for 7-Eleven, in which the convenience stores had an overall income of 399 billion baht, having a gross profit of 112 billion baht and increasing from the previous year by 16.1%.

CP All stated the increasing profit and income was from an increase in average sales of 5.5%, or 80,837 baht daily on average in each 7-11. It was reported that each customer spent 83 baht on average per bill and each store had 965 customers daily on average. Continued …

PM ramps up pressure to force rate cut, baht slides

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin asked the Bank of Thailand (BoT) to urgently hold an unscheduled meeting of its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to cut the interest rate, saying the latest data indicated that the country’s economy was in a crisis.

Thai Chamber foresees 2%-3% expansion in exports in 2024

The Thai Chamber of Commerce University (UTCC) forecasts exports to rebound to an expansion of 2%-3% this year, with the value ranging from US$290-293 billion, or an average of 2.5%, equivalent to $291.6 billion, from a contraction of 1% last year.

Thanavath Phonvichai, president of the UTCC, attributed the rebound in exports largely to the growing global economy and global trade, as well as the recovering demand in main export markets. Continued …

Air quality in most of the country to improve for a week

Bangkok and 37 other provinces are still facing high levels of PM2.5 airborne pollution, but the situation is expected to improve tomorrow through next Saturday, the Pollution Control Department reported yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reports that, during the first two weeks of this month, 113 people visited the city’s eight air pollution clinics seeking treatment for pollution-related symptoms, compared to 100 during the same period last year. Continued …

Thailand braces for intense heat with temperatures soaring

Thailand is bracing for a severe heatwave, with weather maps turning a deep red, verging on black, indicating extreme temperatures are on the way. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) forecasts this year to be hotter by approximately 1.2 degrees Celsius compared to the previous year.

Dengue fever cases in Thailand on the rise

Dengue fever is on the rise, with a total of 13,126 cases, including 12 fatalities, being reported so far this year. This is a 2.2-fold increase over the same period last year, according to Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, director-general of the Disease Control Department.

Of this year’s cases, 3,776 were children aged from 5 to 14, followed by 3,072 in the 15 to 24 age group, and 2,350 cases in the 25 to 34 age group. Most of the fatalities were people over 65 years old. Continued …

Thailand battles highest bile duct cancer rate in Southeast Asia

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew has revealed that Thailand has the highest rate of cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) among the ASEAN nations. The minister announced this worrying statistic at an event commemorating World CCA Day in Maha Sarakham. The primary cause of this cancer is identified as liver fluke.

Thailand, being the Southeast Asia nation with the highest prevalence of CCA, is focusing on efforts to eliminate and treat existing CCA cases across 30 high-risk provinces. What is a liver fluke?

A liver fluke is a parasitic worm. You can become infected after eating contaminated raw or under-cooked freshwater fish or watercress. Infections are usually treated with a drug called triclabendazole. After liver flukes have been ingested, they travel from your intestines to your bile ducts in your liver, where they then live and grow.

Bangkok’s Mo Chit 2 bus terminal closes arrival area

Average IQ level of Thais is ranked 5th in ASEAN and 64th globally

According to the World of Statistics, the Japanese have the highest IQ in the world, ranking first with a score of 106.48. Thailand is ranked 64th globally and, in the ASEAN region, it comes in fifth place behind Singapore, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

8-year-old becomes the youngest to windsurf across the Gulf of Thailand

Water sports history was written yesterday when eight-year-old Thanawat “Shane” Promwaen became the youngest to windsurf 107 kilometers (66 miles) across the Gulf of Thailand – a claim to fame he most wanted as a gift for his ninth birthday this coming Sunday. It was a case of “third time lucky” for Shane, whose two previous attempts at the epic crossing were scuppered by poor wind conditions.

The boy wonder achieved his kite foil crossing in just four hours and 10 minutes – the fastest time yet for windsurfers of any age. He even beat the four hours and 45 minutes crossing time recorded by a jetskier. Thailand’s wee windsurfing wizard was flagged-off from Surfspot in Hua Hin and landed at Pattaya Kitesurfing Clubloongchat on Na Jomtien Beach.

Unsafe levels of smog cover upper Thailand

 

Forty-eight from all 77 provinces, especially those in the northeast, experienced hazardous levels of ultrafine dust on Thursday morning, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

GISTDA reported at 10am that 13 provinces were blanketed by red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 75.8 to 97.7 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air over the past 24 hours. The government’s safe threshold for PM2.5 is 37.5 µg/m³, while the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines recommend 25 µg/m³. Continued …

Young organ donor saves lives after death in Hua Hin

Doctors from Hua Hin Hospital and the Thai Red Cross Society have posthumously honored a 13-year-old patient for donating organs following his tragic death.

Patcharaphon Srilert, 13, from Hua Hin recently passed away from a brain aneurysm, with his family choosing to donate his organs to assist numerous patients awaiting treatment. The donated organs, which include the liver, kidneys, and heart valves, were transported from Hua Hin Hospital to Chulalongkorn Hospital by the Thai Red Cross. Continued …

New policies raise prices paid for agricultural products

The prices paid for several agricultural products have increased in the past six months thanks to the Commerce Ministry’s new policies, Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said on Thursday

Phumtham, who is also a a deputy prime minister, said that in the past six months the prices of Hom Mali and sticky rice rose by 12%, tapioca by 49%, oil palm by 9%, rubber by 22%, corn for animal feed by 6%, shallot up 27%, and oranges by 57%. 44.3% jump in spending for inbound Chinese New Year bookings

Data from leading global travel service provider Trip.com Group has revealed that Thailand will see an increase of 44.3% in total trip expenditure for inbound bookings when comparing this year’s Chinese New Year (CNY) festive period with 2023’s CNY period, with expenditure for outbound travelers increasing by 70.8%.

The increase in spending may be attributed to Southeast Asian tourists taking longer trips, traveling beyond Southeast Asia for the 2024 Chinese New Year period. Elephant Tramples Owner to Death
