Work in progress viewable at Cha Am’s Mrigadayavan Palace

The Mrigadayavan Palace is opening its doors this weekend. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024.

Today, the palace is open from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. There is a 90-baht admission fee for adults. Lower fees are available for students, while young children and elderly can visit for a voluntary donation.

What to do in Hua Hin, Thailand’s easy-to-reach city by the sea

With the vegetarian festival approaching, the Ministry of Commerce insists the prices of fruits and vegetables remain stable thanks to relatively high supply.

Siam Paragon shooting claims third victim

1,593 arrests made in gun crackdown

Police have seized more than 2,000 illegal guns and 75,000 bullets and arrested 1,593 suspects in a three-day nationwide crackdown following a deadly shooting at a Bangkok shopping mall.

Thailand unveils 13-point plan to tackle cancer

The Department of Medical Services (DMS) has unveiled its 13 Quick Win strategy, led by the director-general’s representative, Amporn Benjaphonpitak. This public health strategy is designed to tackle liver and bile duct cancer diagnoses, establish mini-rehabilitation centers in every province, set up four health zones, and enhance services in Bangkok’s Don Mueang district and Chiang Mai’s Mueang district.

19 More Thais Returning From Israel Today

The Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv has arranged for the return of 19 more Thai workers injured in the Israel-Hamas war, with the El Al airline flight having departed at 4.30 am local time this morning and due to land at Suvarnabhumi Airport at 5:15 pm.

The death toll of Thai workers in Israel has risen to 21 following another reported death, announced Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.

Middle East tensions cause gold rush, prices poised to strike US$1,875

The escalating conflict in the Middle East could drive global gold prices to US$1,875 (67,950 baht) per ounce, as predicted by the Gold Traders Assn. (GTA).

The association’s president, Jitti Tangsithpakdi, pointed out that prices have risen by US$20-30 per ounce since the onset of hostilities between Israel and Hamas militants. Gold prices reached a one-week high of US$1,860 Wednesday, and briefly touched US$1,870 later that day. Continued …

Two Thai elephants born through artificial insemination

Among the more than 4,000 elephants in Thailand, two hold a special honor: both were born using artificial insemination in a bid to protect the species and maintain the country’s biodiversity.

According to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation as of March 9 this year, between 4,013 and 4,422 elephants lived in 91 national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and non-hunting areas across Thailand. Two wild elephants electrocuted in Surat Thani

A woman has been charged with violating the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act after two wild elephants were electrocuted by a live wire stretched around her durian plantation to protect her fruit trees.

Second phase of renewable energy scheme promotes biomass crops

Authorities are preparing for the second phase of the “Energy for All” renewable scheme, aiming to encourage farmers to grow “energy crops” to serve power plants that are expected to have electricity generation capacity of 200 megawatts.

Government to trial 4 am closing for Thailand’s nightlife venues

The Thai government is working to identify pilot locations for a trial of late-night closing for the country’s nightlife. Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul says his office is liaising with related parties to find locations where entertainment venues would be allowed to remain open until 4 am.

Ministry allots Bt600 million for tourism promotions

The Tourism and Sports Ministry plans to use 600 million baht from its central budget to promote the tourism industry during the high season, as fiscal 2024 budget disbursement is expected to be delayed until April next year.

Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol said the proposed budget will be allocated to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) for their promotions, starting from the fourth quarter this year through to the first quarter of 2024. Continued …

American man arrested in Chiang Mai after two Dutch tourists stabbed

Chiang Mai police arrested an American man early Thursday for allegedly stabbing a Dutch father and his son on a road in Chiang Mai’s Muang district on Wednesday.

Police said Brian Andrew Burggraf, 27, was arrested at 1am while walking on a road in Tambon Jed Yod. Police say they found a 15-centimeter-long knife in his trouser pocket, along with a packet of hashish marijuana. Continued …

Influenza cases rise five-fold in Thailand

A startling surge in influenza cases has been observed in Thailand this year, with a five-fold increase compared to last year’s monthly averages. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to the public about illegal antiviral medications labeled as oseltamivir being smuggled into the country.

Rising baht forecast to climb higher against dollar

The baht opened at 36.54 baht per U.S. dollar on Wednesday, strengthening from 36.75 at the close of trading yesterday. The dollar weakened after the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield fell to 4.65% yesterday.

Loy Krathong to be proposed for addition to UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list

Thailand’s Culture Ministry is preparing to register Loy Krathong festival in 2024 in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage to complement the government’s policy of promoting Thai culture and soft power at global level.

Loy Krathong is one of Thailand’s most popular festivals, celebrated on the full moon of the 12th lunar month. It involves releasing “krathong” — lotus-shaped rafts decorated with candles, incense and flowers — onto lakes and rivers to honor the Buddha and the water goddess. Video: Cobra caught by wildlife handlers

A cobra lurking near a resident’s yard was captured by wildlife handlers in Nakhon Ratchasima province. The terrified homeowner called the snake catchers for assistance on Oct. 7. Footage shows the volunteers grabbing the three-meter cobra using snake tongs as it tried to hide in a narrow alley beside the house. When they snared the cobra’s head, they then dragged it to an open space, where they hauled it inside a fertilizer sack to be released into the wilderness. Video 

Video: Enormous coiled python rescued from car dealership ceiling

Wildlife rescuers in Phetchabun removed a massive python that was found on the ceiling of a secondhand car dealership on Oct. 9. An epic battle between man and serpent unfolded as the python coiled itself around a metal beam 33 feet above the ground. The skilled team utilized a boom lift to safely capture the 14-foot, 24-pound python. Video 

Israel-Hamas conflict: 20 Thai nationals dead

Foreigners from at least 26 countries have been confirmed killed, taken hostage or are still unaccounted for in the war between Israel and Hamas as of Wednesday.

Kanchana Patarachoke, director-general of the Thai Department of Information and spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told reporters on Wednesday that 20 Thai nationals have been confirmed deceased, 14 have been taken hostage, and 13 are being treated in hospital for injuries. Government defends 10,000-baht digital-wallet scheme amid economic criticism

IMF lowers Thai GDP growth forecast for 2023 to 2.7% due to global situation

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lowered its economic growth projections for Thailand for this year and 2024.

Bank of Thailand predicts 2024 growth of 4.4%

The Bank of Thailand has maintained its GDP growth forecast for next year at 4.4%, inclusive of the government’s economic stimulus measures, says Assistant Gov. Piti Disyatat.

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) cut its growth forecast for 2023 from 3.6% to 2.8%, yet hiked its outlook for next year from 3.8% to 4.4%. Continued …

Gregal, a beachfront Mediterranean restaurant, has opened in Hua Hin. The restaurant is located beside The Royal Princess Condominium Hua Hin. Wine tax in Thailand: A Protectionist Barrier?

Why is wine tax in Thailand 250% on average? In most cases, duties constitute a state’s first protection against products imported from other countries in direct competition with local production.

Does Thailand produce wine? Yes, local production is around one million liters per year and is based in three areas of the country: Loei, Hua Hin and Khao Yai. The projects are relatively recent, and the quality of the wine produced is rather low, with a high price. The national oil and gas conglomerate PTT Plc has agreed to delay accepting payments of 8-9 billion baht for the gas it sells to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to help the government reduce power bills for the rest of this year. New electricity tariff approved, reducing power bills to end of year

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved a new electricity tariff of 3.99 baht per kilowatt-hour, a reduction aimed at decreasing power bills for households and businesses for the remaining four months of this year.

In its initial meeting on Sept.13, the cabinet agreed to lower the electricity tariff from 4.45 baht to 4.10 baht per unit. However, in a subsequent meeting on Sept. 18, it resolved to further reduce the rate to 3.99 baht per unit. Continued …

Hua Hin municipality outlines plans for future development

The Thai Revenue Department has explained more about the taxation of income overseas, which will affect both some foreigners and some Thai people.

The basic idea is, that when money is transferred into Thailand it should be taxed in Thailand if it is income. If the income has been received in another country and later within the same tax year is being transferred to the taxpayer’s account in Thailand, it must be taxed in Thailand. If Thailand has a double tax agreement with the country where the money comes from, the tax paid in that foreign country can be deducted in Thailand according to the rules in the double tax agreement. Two dead, five wounded in Siam Paragon shooting, suspect used modified BB gun

A Chinese tourist and a woman from Myanmar were killed at Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok on Tuesday afternoon, by a teenager using a modified BB gun, according to Police Gen. Torsak Sukvimol, the national police chief. Some media reported a third death.

On Monday, Police Capt. Thongkham Phoyai, Saraburi Province, received a report that 13 14-meter-tall concrete poles with high voltage wires fell down during installation at the Ban Krua subdistrict, Ban Mo District. A giant python, almost 5 meters long and weighing 7 kilograms, caused a stir yesterday when it slithered into a noodle shop in Yala. Tourism confidence in Thailand plummets amid economic jitters

Mrigadayavan Palace 3-day reopening Oct 13-15

The historic Mrigadayavan Palace in Cha Am will temporarily reopen to the public for three days Oct. 13-15. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024

The can be viewed Oct. 13 from 1:30-4:30 pm, and on Oct. 14-15 from 9am-4:30 pm.

Admission fees are as follows:

  • Adults (both Thai nationals and foreigners: 90 baht per person
  • Higher education students and teachers: 60 baht per person
  • High school students and their teachers: 30 baht per person
  • Elementary school and kindergarten students, young children, teachers, priests, monks, the elderly, and people with special needs are encouraged to make a donation.

Navy Confirms Retrieving HTMS Sukhothai From Sea Off PKK

The Navy yesterday confirmed it is going ahead with its project to retrieve a sunken corvette from the Gulf of Thailand sea floor, while categorically dismissing allegations of non-transparency over it.

Navy spokesman Adm. Pokkhrong Monthatpalin said the Navy Fleet based at Sattahip will certainly have the sunken HTMS 442 Sukhothai retrieved by a private firm from the bottom of the sea off Prachuap Khiri Khan, though six bidders had earlier failed to meet specifications under the 200-million-baht project’s terms of reference. Late-night drive in Bangkok takes a twist with surprise python visit

A woman’s late-night drive took a slithery turn when a python surprised her by emerging from the engine compartment after she returned from a meal. At around 1am today, emergency services from the Thung Mahamek Fire Station were called to a parking lot in front of a convenience store in the Yan Nawa district of Bangkok.

Cabinet takes steps to ease cost of living, sets dates for visa-free scheme

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin set up a committee on Tuesday to oversee the implementation of his government’s much-publicized 10,000 baht digital wallet scheme. The committee will be chaired by the premier himself in his capacity as finance minister, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said.

Digital wallet scheme could take a decade to pay off, economists warn

Driver Dies, 14 Injured After Bangkok to Songkhla Bus Crashes in Chumphon

A bus driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while 14 people sustained injuries, after a passenger bus from Bangkok to Hat Yai (in Songkhla) crashed in Chumphon.

Drought forcing elephants to venture further in search of food and water

Acute water shortages in Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife sanctuary in Uthai Thani province have led to several elephants venturing out of the sanctuary to forage for water and food on farmland, according to Tarasak Nipanan, chief of the Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife breeding station.

He said that the sanctuary has been experiencing a water shortage since late last year and the situation appears to be worsening as a result of the El Niño, as natural water sources in the sanctuary have dried up. Continued …

VAT: The untouchable tax

Since the introduction of value-added tax (VAT) in Thailand in 1992, no government has dared to increase the rate because of concerns regarding the economic impact, the greater burden in terms of living expenses, and most importantly how politically unpopular such a move would appear.

Thailand’s cities outside Bangkok can accelerate the country’s growth but will need to find ways to access private capital to improve urban infrastructure, a World Bank study produced with the Program Management Unit on Area-Based Development (PMU-A) and Khon Kaen University says.

Bangkok has long been the country’s hub of economic growth and productivity. But as that growth slows, cities such as Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, and Rayong could pick up the baton with investments in mass transit systems, renewable energy, and other urban infrastructure, which will be critical for Thailand’s competitiveness and ability to adapt to a changing climate, according to the study, “Thailand Urban Infrastructure Finance Assessment.” Continued …

A total of 451 companies were identified as family businesses on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), and they have a combined market capitalization of about 8 trillion baht (about US$ 226 billion), representing a 43% share of the market, a survey by the SET found.

Over the past seven years, 149 family businesses have raised over 3.08 trillion baht through initial public offerings, the survey found. Continued …

Thai exporters warned to prepare for worst as China’s economy heads downward

The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) is urging Thai businesses, especially exporters, to brace themselves for the effects of China’s economic slowdown.

The warning is in response to slower-than-expected growth in China, as its real-estate sector suffers severe debt and liquidity problems. Manufacturers of electric vehicles (EV) from South Korea have expressed interest in investing in Thailand for the manufacturing of small EVs, motorcycle EVs, and EVs for agriculture, according to the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI).

Omoda & Jaecoo International Co., a subsidiary of China’s state-owned automobile manufacturer Chery International, plans to apply for Board of Investment (BoI) privileges to set up an electric vehicle (EV) production base in Thailand.
