Hua Hin discusses ways to combat drought season water shortage

In response to the looming water shortage during the hot season, officials at Hua Hin Municipality met on Friday to discuss ways to maintain an adequate water supply.

The meeting was aimed at addressing the possible water shortage that is anticipated from April to June. One of the main solutions discussed involved leveraging raw water from the Phetchaburi Dam, a strategy made possible by the completion of a pipeline in 2023. Continued …

Most of Thailand to bake in the heat, but heavy rain for the south

With extreme heat forecast to affect several areas of the northern, northeastern, eastern and central regions, including Bangkok, from today, the meteorological department is warning against working or engaging in outdoor activities for an extended period. Bangkok will face temperatures of 40°C, while the north is likely to record 42°C.

79 confirmed Covid cases at PKK prison

The Covid-19 situation at Prachuap Khiri Khan prison is set to be managed by an imminent emergency operations center (EOC), following the identification of infection clusters. This development comes as the public health permanent secretary, Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, reported intensified surveillance in the wake of 79 confirmed Covid cases at the prison.

The first infection was detected on March 27 after a 35-year-old female inmate exhibiting influenza-like symptoms tested positive for Covid upon her admission to Prachuap Khiri Khan Hospital. Road safety concerns during Songkran addressed

Officials have met in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province to discuss ways to reduce the rates of road incidents during one of Thailand’s most celebrated holidays.

The officials noted that accidents tend to occur more frequently on secondary roads. Consequently, the decision was made to reallocate resources from main roads to enhance safety measures on these less-monitored paths. 86 tigers rescued from Thailand temple die

More than 80 tigers that were rescued from a temple in Thailand have died from a viral disease, according to local media reports.

The Buddhist temple – Wat Pa Luang Ta Bua, known as Tiger Temple, in Kanchanaburi province, west of Bangkok – was a tourist attraction where visitors took selfies with tigers and bottle-fed cubs. Phuket rescue team kept busy with surge in reptile sightings

Rescue workers at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation branch in Wichit Municipality, Phuket, have been kept busy with a surge in reptile sightings. Even before the onset of the rainy season the task of managing the movement of these creatures has become a daily routine.

Yesterday, a massive python and a baby monitor lizard were captured in Soi Thepanusorn. The first call for assistance came early, at 9am, when a small monitor lizard had managed to sneak into a local’s house in Moo 4, Wichit. Applications for factory licenses surge

With requests for the setting up of new factories expected to exceed 250 billion baht in the first half of fiscal 2024, the Department of Industrial Works has introduced an online system for factory licensing, aiming to create confidence, transparency, and efficiency to facilitate investors.

The Industrial Commission in Thailand has exposed law violations on the back of a Chinese steel mill crane collapsing in Rayong. This mill, as it turns out, is under Chinese ownership. The revelation led by Industrial Commission Chairman Akaradej Wongpitakroj has brought to the surface allegations of multiple Thai law violations by these Chinese investors.

The commission informed the public about these alleged violations, which include undertaking construction without the necessary permissions, operating businesses under false pretenses, contributing to local pollution, and employing Thai nominees to manage their businesses, among other offenses. The House committee on industries is checking the legality of Chinese-owned factories nationwide, as it has found some of them had violated the law and affected the environment.

Speedboat Capsizes in Sri Racha, 10 Passengers Safely Rescued

A speedboat carrying 10 passengers capsized off the coast of Sri Racha on March 28. All of them were safely rescued.

According to news reports, the boat was overturned by strong waves and wind between the Harbour Bridge and the Silo Bridge in the Surasak area, Sri Racha district, Chonburi province. A nearby resident saw the boat capsize and called for help. Continued …

World’s worst smog chokes northern Thailand

Most provinces in the north were blanketed with dangerous red-coded levels of PM2.5 this morning, with Chiang Mai rated the city with the worst air pollution in the entire world.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 8am that 14 provinces were facing red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 75.9 to 173.6 micrograms per cubic metre of air over the past 24 hours. Fuel tariff charge for May-August period to remain unchanged

The Energy Regulatory Commission has decided to freeze the fuel tariff (FT) for the May-August period at 39.72 satang/unit, which will keep the price of electricity at an average of 4.1805 baht/unit, excluding VAT, said ERC Secretary-General Komkrit Tantravanich today.

He said that the FT for the four-month period was adopted after the ERC’s office had conducted an online public hearing, from March 8-22, to gauge the opinions of members of the public about the FT; 147 opinions were received. Continued …

Gay marriage bill passes; next up: legal prostitution

Thailand’s lower house on Wednesday finalized a gay marriage law, which now goes to the Senate. Members of the House committee in Parliament celebrated, as did leading political figures. The new law is part of a trio of measures centered on human rights for all Thai people.

Rising risk of influenza and dengue amid Covid-19, warns DDC

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) has issued an alert about the escalating risk of influenza and dengue fever this year, amid the persisting threat of Covid-19. The department’s recent communicable diseases report highlights the significance of these health risks.

Department spokesperson Dr. Jurai Wongsawat disclosed that the beginning of the year saw substantial clusters of influenza in schools, prisons, and military camps. The most vulnerable demographic to influenza turned out to be children between 5 and 9 years old, accounting for a significant proportion of the cases. Continued …

No less than four draft laws on alcohol control will soon go before Parliament, but none appear to contain a middle path that will satisfy everyone. Two drafts, one proposed by the Public Health Ministry’s Disease Control Department (DCD) and the other by an anti-alcohol group, push for strict control – apparently out of concern about health and other impacts of drinking.

Thai labor unions criticize new daily minimum wage

The Thai Labor Solidarity Confederation (TLSC) and State Enterprises Workers’ Relations Confederation (SEWRC) expressed disapproval of the new daily minimum wage of 400 baht approved by the tripartite wage committee. The wage increase is only applicable to some areas in 10 provinces, initiating a wave of criticism from the labor unions, who argue that this decision is unjust.

According to the unions, this wage discrepancy among workers within the same province will generate inequalities. They argue that despite the cost of basic commodities and services remaining consistent across the provinces, the wage disparity will create an unfair system. They urge the government and Labor Ministry to eliminate wage inequalities and maintain a uniform daily minimum wage of no less than 400 baht (US$11), ideally 492 baht (US$14). Continued …

Thailand’s Agricultural Exports Under FTA Reach 500 billion baht

Chantanon Wannakejohn, secretary-general of the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) at the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, revealed the overall picture of Thailand’s agricultural trade with the world in 2023. Thailand had a total trade value of 2.372 trillion baht (65.2 billion USD), down 0.13% from 2022, which was 2.375 trillion baht. However, Thailand still had a trade surplus of 951 billion baht.

Looking only at the countries that have joined the free trade agreement (FTA), namely China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Chile, India and Hong Kong (with the exception of the ASEAN countries), it can be seen that they continue to show steady growth. Continued …

Koh Larn wind energy project under scrutiny for misuse of funds

The wind turbine project to generate renewable power on Koh Larn in Pattaya has reportedly become a waste of resources after critics alleged that the turbines have broken down for a long time and the city lacked enough funding to repair them.

The turbine project, located in Khao Nom Sao mountain near Samae Beach, was initiated back in 2006 with a budget of 95 million baht. It aimed to generate electricity through wind and solar power for 489 households (around 3,000 people) on Koh Larn. Continued …

Pranburi Dam’s water level plummets to 29.7%

As part of an urgent response to the escalating drought situation in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Gov. Somkid Chanthamaruk, accompanied by Deputy Gov. Sinathorn Oeam and other provincial leaders, visited Pranburi district to assess the problem first hand.

With the Oil Fuel fund in the red about 100 billion baht from subsidizing the diesel price, measures are being drafted by the Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO) to propose to the Energy and Finance ministries to help ease the burden on the fund.

‘Selective’ wage hike expected to fill Hua Hin tourism jobs

The Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) on Tuesday estimated that the government’s policy of raising the minimum wage in 10 tourism provinces to 400 baht per day will attract workers from other sectors to shift to tourism, thus further boosting the industry’s capacity. Wildfires persist in northern Thailand, contributing to a surge in air pollution despite recent downpours. As of Monday, Mae Hong Son recorded 6,646 wildfires this year, predominantly in the districts of Mueang Mae Hong Son, Pai, and Mae Sariang. Thai people’s lifespan has dropped by 1.78 years due to PM2.5 air pollution, according to research published by the Kasikorn Research Center.

Thailand is experiencing a significant increase in waste generation due to factors such as population growth, urbanization, and economic development. Hot weather warning issued for Thailand

The Thailand Meteorological Department has warned of hot weather throughout Thailand today, with temperatures rising to 39C in Bangkok and 40C elsewhere in the central region and the north.

It also forecasts a 20% chance of thunderstorms and advises people to take care of their health in hot weather conditions. Thunderstorms may occur in the lower northeast, central region, and east regions due to moisture-laden winds from the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea. Continued …

Thais Among Top Target Of Cyber Criminals In Asia

The Bank of Thailand revealed that Thais are among cyber criminals favorite targets in Asia, and as these scammers continuously come up with new tactics it led to a total of 56,746 online fraud cases in January this year, with 3.981 billion baht being stolen.

Pinyo Tripetcharaporn, director of the central bank’s Overall Risk Management Department, said that statistics show of the total cyber fraud cases in January, 46% involved being deceived in making online purchases, followed by 10% being tricked to borrow money and 7% duped into transferring money. Big Bike Collision in Phuket Claims Three Lives

Yesterday, Chalong police officers received an accident report of a big bike colliding with a motorbike on Wiset Road, Mueang Phuket, claiming three lives and one serious injury.

Phuket emergency services and police officers were dispatched to the accident scene and found a blue big bike and a white motorbike overturned on the road. New compensation guidelines after surge in monkey attacks

A government committee has come up with new regulations for compensation to victims of monkey attacks in response to a spate of attacks by rogue monkeys in Lopburi. Under the new regulation, a maximum of 100,000 baht will be paid in case of death or disability.

The committee in charge of managing funds for wildlife protection convened a meeting on Friday and issued new compensation regulations, which went into effect on Saturday. Continued …

Monkey attacks keep Koh Chang park officials at bay

Koh Chang park officials are fed up with a growing number of macaques that pose a danger to local residents and tourists, as well as damaging property.

Neramit Songsagne, chief of Mu Koh Chang National Park, said on Sunday the park is mulling two plans to manage the marauding monkeys, either by sterilizing them to control their reproduction or moving them off the island to new sanctuaries on the mainland. First Lopburi monkeys relocating Monday to reduce attacks, injuries

The Parks department will today temporarily move the first group of Lopburi monkeys into a special enclosure at a Wildlife Rescue Center, before later moving them to a “monkey garden”, in order to control a population that has become increasingly aggressive while stealing food and attacking people, causing injury to several individuals.

The Kasikorn Research Center (KResearch) has downgraded its Thai economic projection for 2024 to a growth of 2.8 %, from its previous forecast of 3.1 % issued in December.

Burin Adulwattana, managing director and chief economist of KResearch, said, “The global economy in 2024 is expected to grow at the same level as was seen in 2023. Global trade is likely to resume growth while global interest rates will gradually decline as inflation falls to the target level set by central banks worldwide. China continues to face the challenge of its ailing property sector, thus far unresolved amid its weak economy, which would lead to ebbing domestic demand and price reductions by manufacturers to maintain their market share.” Continued …

Wage committee unlikely to raise Thai minimum wage to 400 baht

An anticipated meeting of the tripartite wage committee later this month is expected to sanction a second increase in the minimum daily wage for this year. However, the Employers’ Confederation of Thai Trade and Industry (EconThai) suggests the approved hike is unlikely to take the wage to the 400 baht mark.

Air Asia has announced a significant expansion of its flights between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai. Travelers can look forward to daily flights from May 4 through June 14.

A Thai man survived an attack by an Asian black bear while hunting for ant eggs within the Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary in the Isaan province of Buriram on the weekend.

Gold prices continue to surge in Thailand, with the cost of gold ornaments breaking the 37,000 baht mark for the first time. The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) reported a significant increase compared to the previous day’s rate, where the selling price of gold ornaments reached 37,100 baht per baht-weight as of the latest update on March 11.

The domestic buying price for gold bars was set at 36,500 baht per baht-weight, with the selling price slightly higher at 36,600 baht. Thailand is making plans to shift its trade focus away from China and toward India in the longer term. It comes as news emerged this week of contaminated fruit and vegetables being dumped on Thai markets from China. PM Budgeted 139 Million Baht To Fund World Tours

Progress on 6 Thai FTAs now under negotiation

Thailand is negotiating 11 free trade agreements, including five related to upgrading existing FTAs, along with developing six new FTAs, as the kingdom aims to expand trade and investment with key trading partner countries near and distant.

The MRT’s Yellow Line, which connects Lat Phrao (a neighborhood popular with backpackers) to Samrong in eastern Bangkok, opened in June 2023, while the MRT’s Pink Line, connecting the riverside district of Nonthaburi to Bangkok’s Min Buri district, launched at the end of the year. Two women found shot dead at property in Hua Hin

Police are currently investigating the deaths of two women found shot at a property in Hua Hin. The deceased, identified as a 63-year-old businesswoman and her 46-year-old secretary, were discovered on Sunday by the son of the older woman, after he grew concerned over his inability to contact his mother for several days.

Traveling from Bangkok to Hua Hin, he arrived at his mother’s home to find it securely locked, with the air conditioning still running. Upon entering the house through a back window, he was met with a foul smell, prompting him to alert local authorities. Continued …

Anthrax outbreak in Laos prompts raw meat warning in Thailand

Kenika Ounjit, a deputy government spokesperson, yesterday revealed a public health warning from the Department of Livestock Development. The warning urged the public to refrain from consuming raw meat. This follows a report of an anthrax outbreak in Laos.

According to the report, three cases of anthrax were identified on March 4 in the Soukhoumma district of the Lao province of Champasak. Hazardous smog in 48 provinces

Forty-eight provinces were blanketed with hazardous levels of PM2.5 on Monday morning and 11 provinces, mostly in the north, faced red levels of pollution, with Chiang Mai suffering the most.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency reported at 10am on Monday that the highest level of particulate matter, 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), was detected in the northern province of Chiang Mai, at 125.3 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Boy, 14, arrested for shooting death of teen in Hua Hin

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested following the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old in downtown Hua Hin last Thursday evening. Hua Hin Police Station launched an investigation into the incident, which happened on Naresdamri close to the entrance to Hua Hin Fishing Pier.

The shooting not only claimed the life of the young victim, known as “Nong Din,” but also left his 16-year-old friend seriously injured after being caught in the gunfire. Continued …

Frequent use of mosquito spray urged as dengue death toll rises

In a warning against the spread of dengue fever, the Public Health Ministry has urged people to protect themselves by using anti-mosquito sprays and lotions.

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said on Sunday that at the latest meeting of the National Communicable Disease Control committee, he learned that the number of dengue patients this year has risen to 17,783 cases, more than double the number compared to the same period last year. Someone is poisoning Rayong’s dogs, 36 dead so far

Three dog owners in Rayong’s Nikhom Phatthana district have asked police to take action against those responsible for poisoning their pets in separate incidents, resulting in the deaths of 36 animals. Somjit Palapol, a durian farmer, claims that his 19 dogs were poisoned on March 6, 17 of which died.

Despite increased spending by tourists and tax incentives to encourage buying, Thailand’s retail sector is under strain. The sector, facing the challenges of a surge of substandard goods from China, is burdening local entrepreneurs.

Thai Retailers Assn. Vice President Chatchai Tuongratanaphan predicts a growth of only 1%-2% in the retail sector for the first half of the year. On a weekday afternoon, more and more people start slowly filing into a subterranean plaza off Bangkok’s iconic Khaosan Road – for decades a tourist hub in the Thai capital. Michelin plans to invest 300 million euros in Thailand

The government said on Friday French tire maker Michelin planned to invest 300 million euros (11.63 billion baht) in Thailand over the next three years to increase production capacity.

Michelin has already invested more than €1 billion in Thailand with five plants and 8,000 workers, the government said in a statement issued during Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin’s visit to France, where he met with company executives. Continued …

When the lights dimmed on the 2024 Michelin Guide Thailand awards in Bangkok on Dec. 13, history had been made. Chudaree Debhakam of Baan Tepa had become the first Thai female chef to lead a two-Michelin-star restaurant and Garima Arora the first female Indian chef to clinch two stars for her dining room Gaa.

Both women are very much in the minority, not just within Bangkok’s culinary community but in the international food world. Just over 6% of Michelin-starred establishments globally — one, two and three stars combined — are currently helmed by female chefs.
