Among the highlights are the nightly sight of millions of bats leaving their cave in Na Yang subdistrict and the bustling Wednesday Night Market, the largest of its kind in the area. Suspended prison sentences, fines for owners and driver of school bus fire that killed 23

The Thanyaburi Provincial Court yesterday handed down three suspended sentences to the bus owners and driver responsible for last October’s deadly school bus explosion in Pathum Thani. The blast claimed 23 lives, including teachers and students.

An intensive investigation by the Ministry of Transport revealed the bus was part of a fleet legally modified to run on gas. On the day of the disaster, the driver abandoned the bus as flames consumed passengers. Meanwhile, the operating company tried to hide other buses secretly and illegally reconfigured. Is Vietnam Becoming the New Thailand?

In 2015, Thailand was in the midst of a major export boom, running a current account surplus of $28 billion. The following year, the surplus jumped to $43 billion. Thailand maintained these large current account surpluses, anchored by exports of agriculture, manufactured goods, and services, right up until the COVID-19 pandemic.

An economy based around exports like Thailand’s is especially vulnerable to external shocks that disrupt normal patterns of travel and commerce, like pandemics or trade wars. Even now, Thailand is struggling with a slow recovery in exports that has contributed to the country’s weak economic growth. Truck overturns on Phetkasem Road spilling 5 million meth pills

Tracing ‘waste colonialism’ in Southeast Asia

For much of the last 50 years, high-income countries have consumed massive amounts of plastic and trash and given little thought to what would become of it. This was largely because it was out of sight, out of mind, as much of that trash ended up being shipped overseas, first to China, and then recently to Southeast Asia and other Global South countries.

But this model could be coming to an end as some of the top waste-importing countries in Southeast Asia have started to ban foreign waste imports this year. Bangkok Bank enforcing stricter account verification

Bangkok Bank has recently begun enforcing stricter account verification requirements, in line with new government directives aimed at boosting security and cracking down on cybercrime and scams. Customers have been asked to visit their branch with identification documents, such as a passport, to verify their account details.

However, many foreign customers have reported that their accounts were suspended — leaving them unable to withdraw cash, transfer funds, or pay bills. Even after completing the verification process, some expats have reported their accounts being frozen for up to seven days.

Other banks are expected to adopt similar measures soon, as part of broader changes to Thailand’s banking and SIM card registration systems. – HHT

Expat News reader makes plea for missing friend

I’ve been a subscriber for a number of years, and I’ve lived in Thailand for a couple of decades. Decided to retire down here over the last few years.

A friend of mine, a friend of many of ours, James, didn’t return home Tuesday in the afternoon. He had lived in Thailand for decades, he wasn’t the sort to cause trouble or get into it.

The goal here from his wife, also a friend, is just to get any information anyone might have who might have seen him, or, if luck is on our side, who might know where he is.

The government has announced stricter measures for SIM card registration to combat rising online fraud, following cases in which criminals have exploited SIM-swap scams to steal from victims.

The system will apply to all new mobile subscribers, both prepaid and post-paid, as well as existing users replacing SIM cards while keeping the same number. The technology verifies identity in real time through facial recognition, similar to banking applications. The Ministry of Commerce has issued a 2,000 baht fine to Michelin-starred street food vendor Jay Fai following a pricing complaint by a Thai YouTuber.

The controversy began when Pitchaya “Peachii” Chaychana, a YouTuber residing in the UK, visited Jay Fai’s establishment in Bangkok and was astonished by the price of her crab omelette. Wild Elephants Kill Villager in Khon Kaen

A group of wild elephants entered agricultural land in Si Chomphu District, Khon Kaen Province, and fatally attacked a local villager during the night.

Police from Si Chomphu District, together with volunteers from the Sattha Tham Si Chomphu Charity Assn., discovered the body floating face-down in a pond in Dong Lan subdistrict. Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

Thailand records 7% y/y drop in foreign visitors so far in 2025

Thailand’s foreign tourist arrivals from Jan. 1 to Aug. 17 fell 7% from the same period a year earlier, the Tourism and Sports Ministry said today. There were about 20.81 million foreign visitors during the period, it said. China was the largest source market, with 2.93 million visitors.

Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. These policies/programmes change from time to time – they certainly have in Australia over the past 70-odd years of my life. One should expect changes in any country’s immigration/visa policies/programmes over time; Thailand is no different. The world is changing, and changing very quickly, and we must prepare and plan as best as possible for change. Thailand may require all citizens, foreign residents to file tax returns in 2027

Thailand is preparing to launch one of the most comprehensive tax overhauls in its modern history. Despite political instability, a border crisis with Cambodia, and fallout from the new US tariff regime, the Pheu Thai-led government is pressing ahead with reforms aimed at reshaping the country’s economic foundations.

At the center of the plan is a mandatory filing system requiring all adult citizens and businesses to submit annual tax returns by 2027. Foreign residents will also be included. Thai banking, health insurance issues leading to DTV’s increasing popularity

The crackdown on tourists vainly trying to open Thai bank accounts has resulted in a surge of applications for the Destination Thailand Visa. That’s according to visa officers in Thai embassies, especially in nearby countries such as Laos and the Philippines.

Although no regular government figures are published, over 120,000 DTVs have been issued by about 70 Thai diplomatic posts abroad in the first year of operation. A key attraction of DTV is that applicants do not need a Thai bank account to show the liquid asset bond of 500,000 baht (US$ 16,000) since financial institutions abroad are acceptable depositaries.
