Covid-19: from ticking time bomb to mild inconvenience

Prof. Dr. Yong Poovorawan, head of the Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, addressed this issue in an online post, stating that times and circumstances have changed, making direct comparisons impossible.

“We cannot compare the situation during the first two years of the outbreak to that in the fourth or fifth year. The disease has significantly diminished in severity due to the evolution of the virus itself and the immunity humans have developed from vaccines and infections. ADB upgrades Thailand growth forecast, trims developing Asia’s outlook

The Asian Development Bank has upgraded Thailand’s GDP forecast for this year and kept the forecast for next year unchanged. The bank also said developing Asia is likely to grow more slowly than previously thought this year and next, and the outlook could worsen if President-elect Donald Trump makes swift changes to U.S. trade policy.

Developing Asia, which includes 46 Asia-Pacific countries stretching from Georgia to Samoa – and excludes Japan, Australia and New Zealand – is projected to grow 4.9% this year and 4.8% next year, slightly lower than the ADB’s forecasts of 5.0% and 4.9% in September. Continued …

The Bhumjaithai Party has opposed a bill proposed by the ruling Pheu Thai Party to amend the Defense Ministry Administration Act, which is seen as a bid to curb the military’s ability to stage a coup d’etat.

In an incident in Lom Sak district, Phetchabun province, five workers were found dead in a waste pit at a fermented fish factory in Nong Khwai subdistrict. The incident occurred yesterday.

Thailand trails Asia in rice yield race – by a lot

Thailand’s rice yields are significantly lower than other major Asian rice producers, according to Anon Nonsee, deputy director general of the Department of Rice. The average rice yield in Thailand is about 400 to 500 kilograms per rai (0.16 hectares), far below Vietnam’s 1,000 kilograms per rai and China’s 1,000 to 1,200 kilograms per rai.

While some Thai rice varieties can achieve yields similar to these countries, jasmine rice, renowned for its fragrance and soft texture, brings the average down due to its lower yield of 350 to 400 kilograms per rai. Thailand MICE sector grows 42% to 1.16 million tourists in 2024

This growth brings the sector close to its pre-pandemic peak of 1.2 million MICE tourists in 2019, according to the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB).

Looking ahead to 2025, Thailand is set to continue its growth, with several major international events expected to attract between 5,000 and 10,000 attendees each. The top five markets driving this growth were China, India, Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany, the United States and Japan. The air quality index (AQI) in Hua Hin, Bangkok, its adjacent provinces and some northern provinces has reportedly improved following the first day of rainmaking flights by the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation (DRRAA).

Baby elephants’ trunks caught in snares, rescue underway

Authorities from the Department of Conservation Area 2 (Sriracha) mobilized a team of veterinarians and wildlife officers to rescue two injured baby elephants trapped in snares. Concerns have been raised over the potential danger posed by the protective elephant herd during the operation.

The injured elephants were first spotted on Sunday in the forest around Kaeng Hang Maew, Kaeng Hang Maew District, Chanthaburi. 40% of fathers smoke, survey shows

Almost four in 10 fathers in Thailand smoke cigarettes, which mostly has a negative influence on their children, especially as more young people are now vaping while the average age of people who vape drops each year, according to new survey findings.

The survey, conducted recently on 1,159 fathers and other male relatives who have a key role in raising a child from birth until six years of age, found that 39.8% of respondents are smokers. Most (77.22%) smoke cigarettes, 12.36% vape and the rest both smoke both, he said. Continued …

The influx of Chinese goods has put pressure on Thailand’s manufacturing growth and has hindered loan expansion within the banking sector, according to Bank of Thailand Gov. Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput yesterday. He addressed these concerns at the “Thailand Next Move 2025: Resiliency for an Uncertain World” seminar held by Money and Banking magazine.

Since 2014, Southeast Asian countries have witnessed a consistent rise in Chinese imports, with a noticeable acceleration starting in 2020. This surge is largely attributed to escalating geopolitical and economic fragmentation, Sethaput noted. Cabinet approves 38.58 billion baht for rice farmers’ subsidies

The Cabinet on Tuesday earmarked 38.58 billion baht to cover subsidies for 4.68 million rice-farming households nationwide this year, Agriculture Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat said. She said the funds would be spent on providing a 1,000 baht per rai subsidy, capped at 10 rai per family.

Once the budget is formally approved by the Cabinet, the Agricultural Extension Department will send the list of eligible farmers to the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives to remit the money within this year, Narumon said. Continued …

Cabinet to consider carbon tax next week

The Finance Ministry is set to propose a carbon tax for cabinet approval on Dec. 11. Speaking at the Sustainability Forum 2025 seminar on Tuesday, Kulaya Tantitemit, director-general of the Excise Department, said the implementation of the carbon tax would not affect operators or consumers of oil and petroleum products because the overall tax burden on oil and petroleum products will remain the same.

The outbound lanes on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon will be re-opened to traffic within 14 days after work to clear the site of Friday’s crane collapse is finished, according to the Department of Highways (DoH).

Rama 2 motorway construction deaths reach 142

Six more workers were killed and 11 injured in Rama 2 motorway collapse, pushing the total death toll to 142 since 2018. Thailand’s police chief ordered a criminal probe, as officials investigate the cause of the disaster and promised compensation for victims’ families.

Authorities are pursuing legal action against unidentified individuals in a black car who fired four gunshots at wild elephants in Kaeng Krachan National Park, Prachuap Khiri Khan. The perpetrators face six serious charges under wildlife, firearm, and national park laws.

Mongkol Chaiphakdee, chief of Kaeng Krachan National Park, revealed that on Nov. 29, at around 7 pm, a concerned citizen reported the incident, seen via a TikTok video. Flooding driven by heavy rains in southern Thailand has killed nine people and displaced more than 13,000, officials said Saturday, as rescue teams using boats and jet skis worked to reach stranded residents. Electricity price will be cut to 4.15 baht per unit for January-April

The Ministry of Energy has agreed to cut the price of electricity by three satang, from 4.18 baht per unit to 4.15 baht, from January through April next year.

Thai factory output down 0.91% y/y in October, seen rising in 2025

Thailand’s manufacturing production index dropped 0.91% in October from a year earlier, the industry ministry said on Wednesday, falling less than analysts’ expectations. The figure compared with a forecast fall of 1.85% for October in a Reuters poll, and followed an annual drop of 3.51% in September.

Factory output for the first 10 months of 2024 contracted 1.63% from a year earlier, and the ministry forecast it would fall 1.6% for the full year. Output has been weighed down by weaker car production and high household debt that has crimped domestic spending, the ministry said. Continued …

In the early hours yesterday, a crash occurred on Phetkasem Road Huai Yang subdistrict, Thap Sakae District, Prachuap Khiri Khan. A red-plate Toyota van used for transporting a psychiatric patient collided with the rear of a trailer truck, resulting in three fatalities and one injury.

The accident happened at approximately 2: am just 2 kilometers before Wanakorn Beach National Park. The van used by the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) to transport a psychiatric patient for treatment in Nakhon Pathom was returning to Chumphon when the crash occurred. Continued …

New Zealand citizen poisoned by tainted alcohol in Laos returns home

A New Zealand citizen poisoned after drinking contaminated alcohol in a popular tourist town in Laos has returned home, authorities said today, as Laos pledged to prosecute those responsible for the incident that has killed six tourists.

“The New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok has been providing assistance to one New Zealander who we believe to have been poisoned with methanol in Laos. Passengers record satisfaction with airlines

Airline passenger satisfaction remained high and stable this year, according to the International Air Transport Assn. (IATA), though the association suggested investing more in technology to meet customer demand.

Hotel booze rules relaxed over New Year’s

Hotel guests will be allowed to order alcoholic drinks to their rooms from in-house bars and restaurants around the clock over the New Year, according to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. The new rule was approved by the board, chaired by Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin, when it met on Monday.

Normally, guests can only order alcohol to their rooms during the regular hours: until 10pm from an in-house restaurant, or until 2am from an in-house bar. Continued …

The Labor Ministry will study Sweden’s pension system in a bid to improve the Social Security Office’s (SSO) scheme and better address the needs of social security subscribers in an aged society, according to Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan has sought help from 50 American influencers to promote Thai restaurants in the U.S. that have won certificates of authenticity from his ministry. Pichai presided over a ceremony in Hollywood, California, to award Sa Wad Dee Thai Select certificates to seven U.S.-based Thai restaurants.

Thais who are over 60 will be the next group to receive the 10,000-baht cash benefit under the “digital wallet”, payable before the Chinese New Year.

The policy committee on economic stimulation projects, chaired by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, agreed at its meeting yesterday to go ahead with the second phase of the digital wallet scheme by giving the 10,000 baht cash to about 4 million people in the 60-plus age group. Thai rice prices surge in 2024 as demand outstrips supply

The Commerce Ministry has announced an increase in Thai rice prices for 2024, with both export prices and paddy prices on the rise. Jasmine rice has seen a significant price increase, with premium varieties fetching 16,000 baht per ton. Projections suggest exports could hit 9 million tons this year.

Twenty-five tons of krathong floats and garbage have been collected from the Ping River after Friday’s Loy Krathong festival, down from 33 tons last year.
