Thailand EV sales shatter forecasts

The Department of Land Transport’s electric vehicle (EV) sales forecast for Thailand is substantially higher in light of a much better than expected first-half performance, with EV sales totaling 49,319, exceeding the original full-year outlook.

Thammanoon Sriroj claims victory at the Toyota Senior Championship in Hua Hin

Thai golf veteran Thammanoon Sriroj has added another feather to his cap, emerging as the champion of the Toyota Senior Championship 2023 held at the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course.

Baht depreciates further

Thailand’s baht slumped to its lowest in more than 10 months on Thursday, hit by persistent worries over the country’s fiscal outlook, while other Asian currencies steadied after recent losses against a rallying United States dollar.

UTCC cuts estimate of economic growth to 3%

Several economic factors are signaling a less-optimistic outlook for the Thai economy, leading to a revised growth forecast for 2023, Thanawat Polvichai, rector of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC), said this week.

Thanawat, who also serves as chief adviser to the UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting, said that the UTCC has now revised Thailand’s economic growth rate for this year to 3% from the initial 3.6%. Labor minister vows to raise daily minimum wage by year-end

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced on Thursday that the raising of the minimum wage would be a New Year’s gift for the labor sector, but could not confirm whether the increase would bring it up to 400 baht per day.

Formal discussions with the tripartite committee, composed of employers, employees, and government representatives, would first be necessary, he said, adding that the decision would be based on inflation rates, minimum wages in each province, varying wages in different industries, and the country’s inflation rate. The HSBC Global Connection survey, a new research commissioned by HSBC Commercial Banking, shows that international businesses from nine major economies are increasingly optimistic about their growth prospects in Southeast Asia.

A retired senior police sergeant major, in the central province of Kampaeng Phet, raised a few titters after he completed an unusual erection on his land, three penis statues. He believes the phallic erections will bring him good luck in selling his land, which is worth 60 million baht.

Three penis statues stand prominently on the land of the 86-year-old Thai man, Thoop Lamoonmorn. The largest one-eyed monster, standing at an impressive 3.5 meters tall, is painted in a pristine white hue and takes center stage. US dollar surge hits Asian currencies: Thai baht suffers

Asian currencies experienced a dip today, with the Thai baht and Indonesian rupiah bearing the brunt of the losses. This was mainly due to the rising strength of the U.S. dollar, bolstered by robust economic indicators and the threat of inflation from the Federal Reserve, which have pushed U.S. bond yields to a 16-year peak.

The amount of usable water across 27 medium-sized reservoirs across the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima has dropped to alarmingly low levels despite the rainy season, raising fears of an impending drought, according to a provincial irrigation office official.

Thai baht plummets against the US$

The Thai baht has plummeted to its lowest level against the USD since November last year, driven by concerns of “stagflation in countries that heavily rely on energy imports. That includes Thailand.

The baht experienced its second consecutive day of declines against the USD, falling by 0.6% and reaching its lowest point since Nov.10, 2022. As of yesterday afternoon, the baht is valued at 36.2 per U.S. dollar. Yesterday, under the leadership of Police Lt. Gen. Phanthana Nuchcharoen, deputy commissioner of the Royal Thai Police, a joint operation led by Police Col. Thailand’s legislators will renew a push for an overarching law on use of cannabis for medical and research purposes, a senior lawmaker said on Wednesday, more than a year after the narcotic was legalized without proper regulations.

Thai economy to be driven by private consumption, tourism in 2023

Stimulating private consumption is a reasonable strategy for the government to maintain economic growth amid global uncertainties, according to Tim Leelahaphan, an economist at Standard Chartered Bank Thailand. The first half of 2023 saw a 7% year-on-year increase in the country’s private consumption.

Expectations are high for private consumption and tourism to be the main drivers of economic growth in the latter half of the year. The Ministry of Commerce is considering using its extensive network of retail outlets, shops and eateries, under the “Blue Flag” (Thong Fah) program, to allow people, who may have difficulty finding shops under the digital wallet 4km radius rule, to spend the 10,000-baht benefit under the scheme.

Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has instructed officials to consider the possibility of leveraging the 144,821 Blue Flag outlets across the country, to overcome the limitation that the 10,000 baht can only be spent within a 4km radius of the recipient’s residence. Continued …

Gold prices in Thailand saw a significant surge as per the Gold Traders Assn. Compared to the closing price of the previous day, gold ornaments Tuesday were sold at an increased rate of 33,100 baht (US$926) per baht weight, marking an upswing of 100 baht.

M&T Computer moving, Hua Hin Mall closing

Expat News has learned that Hua Hin Mall, located just north of the municipal office on Phetkasem Road, will be closing by December. Intown residents are most familiar with the grocery store, which generally has lower prices than Makro, or with the computer repair shop.

Many of the tenants have already moved out, with M&T Computer planning to relocate by Oct. 1 across from the Malee shopping center at 5/233 Soi Village, Khlong Chonprathan Road. M&T is where many people go for computer repairs and equipment. They can be reached at 089-174-0589 or 094-985-9947.

No word yet on where, of if, the grocery or the other stores at the mall will relocate.

New “electrical” blue tarantula species found in Thailand

Entomologists in Thailand have been stunned by an electrifying new species of tarantula found in the southern part of the country.

Thailand to tax all income from abroad starting 2024

Thailand’s revenue departments has released new guidelines that will see all income from abroad taxed as personal income tax regardless of whether it was earned income or savings.

According to the document, “…those that have earnings from occupation or business abroad or wealth that is located abroad…and has brought these assets into Thailand…must factor this into their personal income tax for the year.”

It is unclear at this point how this will apply to foreigners living in Thailand on a retirement visa. Continued …
