3 dogs attack, kill man in Lopburi

Flooding disrupts Thai agriculture, vegetable prices surge

Flooding in several provinces across Thailand has led to significant disruptions in the supply of agricultural products, prompting the Commerce Ministry to closely monitor price movements. According to Wattanasak Sur-iam, director-general of the Internal Trade Department, the floods have reduced supply, causing a noticeable increase in vegetable prices compared to last week.

Hom mali paddy rice is currently priced at approximately 16,050 baht per ton, white paddy rice at 11,300 baht per ton, and sticky paddy rice at 13,900 baht per ton. Thailand to launch digital money handout in two weeks

The coalition government is set to initiate its policy implementation, including the digital money handout scheme, in two weeks, according to caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.

Expert Urges Government To Raise Tax for Foreign Condo Buyers

Agency for Real Estate Affairs (AREA) points to the trend toward foreign ownership: a new post-COVID peak will be reached in 2024. It is estimated that 5,700 units will be transferred by the end of this year, surpassing the 1,000-5,000 units that weretransferred annually in 2020-2023.

More than 12 million foreign arrivals expected before end of year

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) estimates that 12.22 million foreign tourists will visit Thailand in the last four months of 2024, pushing the total for the year to nearly 36 million, surpassing the target of at least 35 million. Revenue from international markets is expected to reach 1.8 trillion baht.

TAT Gov. Thapanee Kiatphaibool says the foreign tourism market in the last four months of 2024 is showing signs of improvement compared to the same period last year. It is expected that 12,226,500 foreign tourists will visit, a 20% increase and generating 652.826 billion baht in revenue, 29% more than the same period in 2023. Another snake in a toilet

A Samut Prakan man making his morning visit to the toilet was startled on Wednesday by a sudden, sharp pain in his testicles after he sat down. He had been bitten by a python hiding in the toilet bowl, after which the reptile remained firmly attached to his scrotum before he was able to shake it off.

Strong baht to affect Q4 exports

10 Northeast provinces at risk of severe drought in next 10 years

Ten provinces in Thailand’s northeastern region are likely to experience severe drought over the next decade, according to drought trends forecast by the Climate Change and Environmental Department on Wednesday. The forecast was based on two climate model scenarios: one assuming moderate greenhouse gas emissions and one with high emissions.

The moderate emissions scenario assumes greenhouse gas emissions in 2100 will be close to current levels, potentially raising the global average surface temperature by about 2.7 degrees Celsius between 2081 and 2100. Thai-Chinese high-speed railway 36% behind schedule

The first phase of the Thai-Chinese high-speed railway running from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima province is currently 71.4% complete, but around 36.4% behind its scheduled opening in 2028, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) reported on Thursday.

A woman experienced a terrifying ordeal when the lift she was using at her condo in Bangkok suddenly plummeted from the 32nd floor and stopped at the 15th floor, leaving her shaken.

Through extensive campaigns on sexual well-being at the community level over the past decade, Thailand has successfully brought down the number of teenage mothers (aged 15-19) by half, the Public Health Ministry has announced, as it embarks on a more ambitious goal.

Thai unemployment drops, except in Bangkok

Thailand’s overall unemployment rate dropped from May to June, except in Bangkok, according to a new survey conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO).

Institute predicts 8.8% jump in food exports to Bt1.6 trillion

The value of Thailand’s food exports is expected to increase by 8.8% year-on-year to 1.6 trillion baht this year, driven by growing global demand and a decrease in the prices of raw materials, says the National Food Institute (NFI).

Haier, the Chinese consumer electronics and home appliance company, has invested 10 billion baht to set up its first air-conditioner manufacturing plant in Thailand to tap the rapid growth of the air-conditioner market in Thailand worth more than 1 billion baht.

Rice farmers to sue if water is drained into their rice fields

Rice farmers in the Sena district of Ayutthaya province are threatening to sue the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) for compensation if the department drains excess water into their rice fields before Sept. 15, flooding their unharvested crops.

Pradab Kongpramoon, a farmer in Ban Krathum in Sena district, said that there are more than 22,400 hectares of rice fields, with only some having been harvested. Fishermen told the media that they had never seen so many Blackchin tilapia being washed ashore, although they had seen them at sea.

Effort to reduce energy subsidies wins backing

Tax authorities and energy advocates support the Oil Fuel Fund Office’s (OFFO) initiative to better manage the loss-ridden Oil Fuel Fund, with its universal diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) price subsidy programs likely to end, according to a public hearing on the 2019 OFFO Act.

A substantial sum from the fund is being spent to help households and businesses, with no clear criteria to determine who really needs subsidies, said participants in the hearing co-organized by OFFO and Thammasat University. Participants support OFFO’s plans to spend money more carefully after Pornchai Jirakulpisan, head of the policy and strategy department at OFFO, said earlier the office is considering helping only specific groups of people to avoid incurring huge debts. PTT Station cuts petrol and gasohol prices by 30 satang per liter

PTT Station announced a reduction in retail fuel prices, effective from 5am tomorrow. Petrol and all types of gasohol will drop by 30 satang per liter, with diesel prices remaining unchanged.

The cut means petrol will now be priced at 44.94 baht per liter. Gasohol 95 will be 37.05 baht per liter, Gasohol 91 at 36.68 baht per liter, E20 at 34.94 baht per liter, and E85 at 34.69 baht per liter. Premium Gasohol 95 will be available at 45.64 baht per liter. Continued …

Inward immigration may be the only thing that can halt Thailand’s economic decline

As Thailand’s government launched its digital wallet scheme, and with results for the second quarter expected shortly, maybe it is time to look at the bigger picture and confront Thailand’s economic prospects. In short, the genuine likelihood is that its GDP may at some point go into decline if it fails to overcome its population crisis.

This week, an Economic Intelligence Center (EIC) study from Siam Commercial Bank suggested that Thailand is on the same road as Japan. It suggested weak growth extending until 2050. However, the reality is that the kingdom, whose population may halve over the next 5o years or so, is facing a severe decline in GDP. The answer, if there is any, may lie in inward immigration. WTA’s Thailand Open stage to be held in Hua Hin Sept 18

The WTA on Friday announced two key changes to the 2024 calendar during the Asian swing later this season. The WTA 500 sanction previously held by the Zhengzhou Open will be transferred to the Ningbo Open starting in 2024, increasing its status from a WTA 250 event. The new WTA 500 Ningbo Open will take place during Week 42 of the calendar, commencing Oct. 14.

The vacant WTA 250 sanction will see a special one-year return to Hua Hin for the second staging of the Thailand Open this season, which will be held in Week 38 and begin Sept. 16. – wtatennis.com

Online retailers set to hike sales fees

Shopee, Lazada and TikTok are expected to continue to increase sales transaction fees to grow revenue, which raise costs for local merchants. TikTok Shop announced two fee increases this year. Electricity bills to remain unchanged at 4.18 baht per unit

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) resolved on Thursday to keep the fuel tariff (FT) for electricity unchanged at 39.72 satang for September to December, which will keep electricity capped at 4.18 baht per unit.

Poonpat Leesombatpaiboon, the commission’s secretary-general, said the move to keep the FT unchanged was in line with the Cabinet’s resolution on July 23 to retain the ceiling on power bills as part of the government’s bid to help ease people’s financial burdens. Continued …

Power tariff set to fall by early 2025

The power tariff, which will be capped at 4.18 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit) to maintain electricity prices until the end of this year, is likely to decrease early next year, as global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is thought to be decreasing, which would result in lower gas prices.

The demand and supply of LNG plays a key role in determining the tariff rate, which is used to calculate power bills. Gas, from domestic sources and LNG imports, makes up 60% of the fuels used to generate power in Thailand. Continued …

Chinese Tourist Killed by Falling Tree in Chiang Mai

In a tragic accident in Chiang Mai, a Chinese tourist lost her life, and another was injured when a tree fell on them while they were ziplining. Baht set to further strengthen this year despite headwinds

The baht could appreciate further to 35.30 to the U.S. dollar in the short term, after hitting a four-month high of 35.72 early Wednesday, but political instability and deteriorating fiscal positions as a result of the government’s populist policies could limit the Thai currency’s rebound.

Little by little, the canopy of branches and interlocking leaves closes overhead as our vehicle rollicks deeper into the plantation. Foreign direct investment (FDI), a key barometer for economic growth for developing countries, has seen a decline of about 2% in 2023, with Thailand’s share of FDI inflow declining among the highest in the world, according to latest data released by United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD), with ASEAN continuing to remain in the positive trajectory witnessing a 1.2% uptick in its FDI to US$ 226.3 billion.

UNCTAD, in a report released recently, said that global FDI in 2023 decreased marginally, by 2%, to $1.3 trillion. This headline figure was affected by wild swings in financial flows through a small number of European conduit economies; excluding the effect of these conduits, global FDI flows were more than 10% lower than in 2022. Call to educate public over nuclear push

 

A new public perception of nuclear technology in the power sector is needed and crucial for the Energy Ministry’s efforts to push for small modular reactor (SMR) projects in the 2024 power development plan, say energy and nuclear technology experts.

SMR is a type of nuclear power technology with a capacity of up to 300 megawatts per unit, about one-third of the generating capacity of larger, traditional nuclear power reactors, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Continued …

Reports that the energy ministry is conducting a feasibility study into developing small nuclear power plants have been met with mixed reactions – from welcome, mainly by the energy and industrial sectors, to reluctance and fear.

Pickup truck loan defaults surge 39% in May

The National Credit Bureau (NCB) reported a significant 39% increase in bad debt for pickup truck loans in May, highlighting an alarming trend in the auto finance sector.

Thailand’s July 15 visa revolution offers radical benefits for travelers, more to come

A senior Thai civil servant at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the last week has brought home the significance of the crucial visa changes ushered in on July 15. Undeniably, the changes offering a 60-day visa exemption to travelers from 103 countries extendable to 90 days and the new DTV visa are radical departures.

For instance, on the 60-day exemption, Naruechai Ninnart explained that this was a new visa from the previous 30-day one. In short, it allowed for business engagement and ad hoc working. Similarly, with the DTV or Destination Thailand visa, here is a visa for genuine freelancers or digital nomads that for Bt10,000 offers them the ability to enter and exit the country for five years, staying for up to 180 days at a time. AoT greenlights Suvarnabhumi airport expansion plan

The Airports of Thailand’s (AoT) board has approved the master plan for a five-year expansion project at Suvarnabhumi airport, which will take place between 2025 and 2030.

Tourists accused of killing kitten with luggage

Consumption of shark fin has declined by more than one-third in Thailand since 2017, according to a new report from wildlife advocacy group WildAid. But with more than half of urban Thai citizens reporting they still plan to eat shark in the future, demand remains high.
