Rainmaking flights over Hua Hin give air quality instant boost

The air quality index (AQI) in Hua Hin, Bangkok, its adjacent provinces and some northern provinces has reportedly improved following the first day of rainmaking flights by the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation (DRRAA).

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Itthi Sirilathayakorn said on Tuesday that the Royal Rainmaking Operation Units in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Hua Hin district and Kanchanaburi province began their mission in the afternoon on Monday. Continued …

Thailand faces worsening air quality crisis, health warnings issued

Thailand’s air quality has significantly deteriorated, with 20 provinces reporting pollution levels exceeding health standards. The most severe pollution is found in Pak Kret, with Bangkok also experiencing widespread poor air quality.

Severe flooding in south claims 25 lives

Severe flooding in the south has claimed 25 lives and affected more than 660,000 households in 10 provinces, with large areas of six provinces still inundated as the water drains slowly off.

Phatsakorn Bunyalak, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), said on Tuesday that from Nov. 23 to Dec. 3, flooding triggered by days of heavy rain was reported in 10 southern provinces – Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Trang, Satun, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. Baby elephants’ trunks caught in snares, rescue underway

Authorities from the Department of Conservation Area 2 (Sriracha) mobilized a team of veterinarians and wildlife officers to rescue two injured baby elephants trapped in snares. Concerns have been raised over the potential danger posed by the protective elephant herd during the operation.

The injured elephants were first spotted on Sunday in the forest around Kaeng Hang Maew, Kaeng Hang Maew District, Chanthaburi. One elephant has a snare wound on the middle of its trunk, while the other is injured near the trunk’s tip. Both calves remain with their herd of approximately 40 wild elephants. Continued …

AIS expects consolidation with TTTBB by next year

Advanced Info Service (AIS) targets completion of the consolidation of its own fixed broadband internet system with that of Triple T Broadband (TTTBB) by the end of 2025. AIS took over TTTBB in November 2023. The consolidation covers operations, billing, services and back-up systems.

According to Tee Seeumpornroj, chief executive of broadband business at AIS, AIS fiber business operated under the brand AIS 3BB Fiber 3 since last year following the takeover. Continued …

40% of fathers smoke, survey shows

Almost four in 10 fathers in Thailand smoke cigarettes, which mostly has a negative influence on their children, especially as more young people are now vaping while the average age of people who vape drops each year, according to new survey findings.

The survey, conducted recently on 1,159 fathers and other male relatives who have a key role in raising a child from birth until six years of age, found that 39.8% of respondents are smokers. Most (77.22%) smoke cigarettes, 12.36% vape and the rest both smoke both, he said. Continued …

Cabinet puts Bt10,000 benefit for the elderly on hold

The cabinet instructed the Finance Ministry today to review the second phase of the digital wallet scheme, under which about four million people over 60 would have received a 10,000 baht cash benefit next January.

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra asked the Finance Ministry to study the legal aspects of the scheme in more detail and to resubmit its findings to the cabinet for consideration. Economy Faces Strain from Chinese Goods Influx: BoT

The influx of Chinese goods has put pressure on Thailand’s manufacturing growth and has hindered loan expansion within the banking sector, according to Bank of Thailand Gov. Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput yesterday. He addressed these concerns at the “Thailand Next Move 2025: Resiliency for an Uncertain World” seminar held by Money and Banking magazine.

Since 2014, Southeast Asian countries have witnessed a consistent rise in Chinese imports, with a noticeable acceleration starting in 2020. This surge is largely attributed to escalating geopolitical and economic fragmentation, Sethaput noted. By 2023, Thailand’s imports from China reached $71.1 billion (roughly 2.53 trillion baht), making Thailand the second largest importer of Chinese goods in Southeast Asia, just after Vietnam. Thai manufacturers brace for impact of Trump tariffs

More trade barriers and hindrances to campaigns against carbon dioxide emissions are major concerns among Thai manufacturers who need to adapt to changes expected from the Donald Trump administration, according to the latest survey by the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

All 150 respondents, who are executives and members of the FTI, say Trump’s economic policy will certainly affect the Thai manufacturing sector, with 56.7% expecting a moderate impact, 25.3% warning of a high impact, and 18% anticipating a limited impact. Continued …

Declining competitiveness, loan growth dent GDP outlook

The deteriorating competitiveness of Thai automotive companies, coupled with contracting loan growth and uncertainty regarding U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s trade policies, pose threats to the Thai economy next year, say economists who downgraded the nation’s GDP growth outlook.

Thai export performance improving steadily

Thai exports have performed better than expected this year, says the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC), which expects 2024 forecasts to be upgraded as the year draws to a close.

The group now expects the U.S. dollar value of Thai exports to rise by 4% from 2023, compared with earlier estimates of 1%-2%. It predicts further growth of 1%-3% in 2025. Continued …

Cabinet approves 38.58 billion baht for rice farmers’ subsidies

The Cabinet on Tuesday earmarked 38.58 billion baht to cover subsidies for 4.68 million rice-farming households nationwide this year, Agriculture Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat said. She said the funds would be spent on providing a 1,000 baht per rai subsidy, capped at 10 rai per family.

Once the budget is formally approved by the Cabinet, the Agricultural Extension Department will send the list of eligible farmers to the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives to remit the money within this year, Narumon said. Continued …

Saudia Arabia flights to Phuket begin

Thailand’s tourism sector is poised to welcome an influx of Saudi Arabian tourists, thanks to new direct flights connecting Riyadh and Jeddah to the resort island of Phuket. Saudia, the national airline of Saudi Arabia, has initiated three services a week to Phuket, starting with its inaugural flight SV852 from Riyadh, which landed on Monday. Cabinet to consider carbon tax next week

The Finance Ministry is set to propose a carbon tax for cabinet approval on Dec. 11. Speaking at the Sustainability Forum 2025 seminar on Tuesday, Kulaya Tantitemit, director-general of the Excise Department, said the implementation of the carbon tax would not affect operators or consumers of oil and petroleum products because the overall tax burden on oil and petroleum products will remain the same.

The department will simply adjust the proportion of the tax on oil and petroleum products and incorporate the carbon tax into the oil and petroleum tax structure, she said. Continued …

Dow Leads Mangrove Cleanup, Recycling Over 2.2 Tons

Dow Thailand Group has conducted its second annual “Save the Mangroves, Reduce Waste” campaign. The initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Thailand Mangrove Alliance and the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, brought together government agencies, employees, and over 400 community volunteers to restore mangroves in Rayong Province.

Rama II Road fix in two weeks, new lane to relieve traffic

The outbound lanes on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon will be re-opened to traffic within 14 days after work to clear the site of Friday’s crane collapse is finished, according to the Department of Highways (DoH).

Director-general Apirat Chaiwongnoi said on Sunday work was underway to remove debris from the collapsed section of the elevated Ekkachai-Ban Phaeo Intercity Motorway 82 (M82) project. Continued …

Rama 2 motorway construction deaths reach 142

Six more workers were killed and 11 injured in Rama 2 motorway collapse, pushing the total death toll to 142 since 2018. Thailand’s police chief ordered a criminal probe, as officials investigate the cause of the disaster and promised compensation for victims’ families.

Driver Fires Shots to Scare Wild Elephants in Kaeng Krachan National Park

Authorities are pursuing legal action against unidentified individuals in a black car who fired four gunshots at wild elephants in Kaeng Krachan National Park, Prachuap Khiri Khan. The perpetrators face six serious charges under wildlife, firearm, and national park laws.

Mongkol Chaiphakdee, chief of Kaeng Krachan National Park, revealed that on Nov. 29, at around 7 pm, a concerned citizen reported the incident, seen via a TikTok video. The footage captured individuals in the car firing shots on Nong Phlap–Huai Sat Yai Road, Huai Sat Yai subdistrict, Hua Hin district. Wild elephants were present on the road during the shooting. Thailand Flooding Kills Nine, Displaces Thousands

Flooding driven by heavy rains in southern Thailand has killed nine people and displaced more than 13,000, officials said Saturday, as rescue teams using boats and jet skis worked to reach stranded residents. Local media footage showed residents wading through murky, chest-deep water and cars submerged in flooded streets.

“Flooding across eight provinces in southern Thailand has affected 553,921 households and claimed nine lives, prompting agencies to mobilize urgent assistance,” the country’s disaster agency said. Continued …

The Pollution Control Department is warning that people in Greater Bangkok will face thick smog from Monday to Friday due to smoke from farmland and stagnant air over the capital and nearby provinces.

Laos factory owner arrested in methanol poisoning tourist tragedy

In a case that has sent shockwaves across the globe, police in Laos arrested the owner of a factory believed to be the source of a deadly methanol poisoning incident that claimed the lives of six foreign tourists. Van crash in Thap Sakae district leaves 3 dead

In the early hours yesterday, a crash occurred on Phetkasem Road Huai Yang subdistrict, Thap Sakae District, Prachuap Khiri Khan. A red-plate Toyota van used for transporting a psychiatric patient collided with the rear of a trailer truck, resulting in three fatalities and one injury.

The accident happened at approximately 2: am just 2 kilometers before Wanakorn Beach National Park. The van used by the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) to transport a psychiatric patient for treatment in Nakhon Pathom was returning to Chumphon when the crash occurred. Continued …

New Zealand citizen poisoned by tainted alcohol in Laos returns home

A New Zealand citizen poisoned after drinking contaminated alcohol in a popular tourist town in Laos has returned home, authorities said today, as Laos pledged to prosecute those responsible for the incident that has killed six tourists.

“The New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok has been providing assistance to one New Zealander who we believe to have been poisoned with methanol in Laos. They have now departed Laos and returned home,” a New Zealand Foreign Ministry spokesperson said by email, without providing further details on the person. Continued …

Here’s where methanol poisonings happen most

Two Australian teenagers died this week after becoming ill with suspected methanol poisoning in Laos, along with a dozen other tourists. Six people have now died, and they are all believed to have consumed drinks laced with methanol.

The Australian government has updated its travel advice for Laos, telling residents to be alert to the potential risk of spirit-based drinks, including cocktails. Bangkok choked by pollution

Prof. Rawiwan Oranratmanee was an impressively health-conscious person. Her routine workout included yoga, jogging and cycling, among others. Yet, at the age of only 55, she was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.

Alarm over end of Thailand’s free medicines policy

A civil society group is unhappy with the Medical Council of Thailand’s legal action against the National Health Security Office (NHSO)’s policy over free medicine for 16 ailments under the universal healthcare scheme. It suggested the council immediately withdraw the lawsuit for the sake of patients.

Saree Aongsomwang, secretary-general of the Thailand Consumer Council (TCC), on Saturday expressed concern about the conflict between the Medical Council of Thailand and the Pharmacy Council of Thailand after the Supreme Administrative Court accepted the council’s complaint against the NHSO policy, which provides free medicine at pharmacies for symptoms on the list. Car production in Thailand fell 25.1% in October from a year earlier to 118,842 units, as truck output slumped heavily, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said on Monday.

Japan has dispatched 12,000 technical experts and 1,100 volunteers to Thailand over the decades, while Thailand sent 33,000 technical trainees to Japan.

The past two decades or so, in particular, saw key infrastructures developed, partly thanks to Japan’s Yen Loan (or low-interest loan) and made possible the completion of Suvarnabhumi International Airport (2006) and the MRT Blue Line (2004). A long-tail tour boat carrying 13 people capsized in the Cheow Lan Dam lake (Ratchaprapha Dam) in Surat Thani province after being hit by a sudden storm, leaving one French tourist missing and others injured.

The incident occurred just before noon Saturday, near the scenic Three Friends Mountain (Khao Sam Kler), a popular tourist attraction in the area. Authorities have arrested a man holding a Singaporean passport following a bomb threat called in against an AirAsia flight departing from Bangkok to Hat Yai.

Israel raises travel warning for Thailand amid ‘persistence of threat’

The Israel National Security Council has raises the travel warning for Thailand to Level 2, nearly two weeks after an initial warning cited “the emergence of a potential threat to Israelis in the country.”

Passengers record satisfaction with airlines

Airline passenger satisfaction remained high and stable this year, according to the International Air Transport Assn. (IATA), though the association suggested investing more in technology to meet customer demand.

Thailand’s household debt rises to Bt1.2 trillion

Starting today, petrol and gasohol prices are set to climb by 30 satang per liter, courtesy of PTT Station’s latest price tweak. In contrast, diesel users can breathe a slight sigh of relief as their prices remain untouched.

In a move that’s sure to delight frequent flyers, Thai Airways (THAI) revealed plans to swap its A320s for wide-bodied aircraft on select domestic routes this December, just in time for the peak holiday season. The airline is ramping up capacity to accommodate the soaring demand during the Christmas-to-New Year rush, from Dec. 20 to 31.

While official word from THAI’s communications team is still pending, several travel sources, including Nation Online, have confirmed the changes. Starting in early December, Boeing 777s, Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and Airbus A330s will replace the smaller A320s on key domestic routes, including those to Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. Hotel booze rules relaxed over New Year’s

Hotel guests will be allowed to order alcoholic drinks to their rooms from in-house bars and restaurants around the clock over the New Year, according to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. The new rule was approved by the board, chaired by Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin, when it met on Monday.

Global EV sales up 35%

Global sales of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles rose 35% in October from the same month last year, led by a 54% jump in sales in China, market research firm Rho Motion said on Wednesday.

Thai developer Property Perfect has sold the Hyatt Regency Sukhumvit in Bangkok for 5.055 billion baht (US$155 million). The property owned by Grand Asset Hotels & Property represents Thailand’s largest single asset hotel transaction on record.
