Heat index hits extreme levels

Temperatures hit “very dangerous” levels in Phuket yesterday and “dangerous” levels in Bangkok and 34 other provinces, and the heatwave was expected to continue today. People in vulnerable groups, including the elderly and sick, were warned to stay out of the sun.

Dr. Amporn Benjaponpitak, director-general of the department of health, said a “heat index” at the very dangerous red level could result in rashes, cramps, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, or fainting, and even death. Continued …

Thailand cracks down on foreigners using student visas to work illegally

Amid growing concerns over foreign nationals, particularly Chinese engineers, using student visas to illegally work on construction sites in Thailand, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) and the Immigration Bureau have joined forces to address the issue.

The concern intensified after reports revealed that foreign workers were exploiting student visas to bypass work permit regulations. Notably, online platforms like CSI LA and “Ru Tan Jeen” highlighted operations in provinces like Lamphun, where student visas were allegedly renewed for 10,000 baht per person and used as a cover for nationwide illegal employment, complete with transportation networks. Bangkok to require registration, microchips for pets

From Jan. 10, 2026, pet lovers in Bangkok are on a new leash, thanks to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s (BMA) latest law.

Double-decker buses have been prohibited from plying potentially dangerous routes after a fatal crash on a highway in Prachin Buri, according to the Ministry of Transport.

Thailand’s Most Wanted Gunman Captured in Surat Thani

Thailand’s top-ranked contract killer in the southern region, known for a string of violent crimes and a reputation for being heavily armed, was arrested after a tense standoff with police at a resort in Chaiya District, Surat Thani.

The suspect, 38-year-old Thanawat, also known as “Ae”, was apprehended by a special task force from the Royal Thai Police’s anti-gang and contract killer suppression unit. 14 million baht vanishes from Thai Parliament savings co-op

A scandal is brewing at Parliament’s doorstep after a whopping 14 million baht mysteriously vanished from the Parliamentary Official Saving and Credit Cooperative. But despite the fraud, House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha insists there’s no need to panic.

Stimulus plan pitched to cope with US tariffs

Thailand’s main opposition party called for an economic stimulus package to cope with U.S. tariffs after Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra signaled that trade talks to secure relief from the levy have been stalled.

Thai exports rise to 3-year high

Thailand-US Direct Flights To Resume After FAA Safety Upgrade

US Government Finalizes Tariffs on Southeast Asian Solar Imports

The U.S. government has finalized severe tariffs on imports of solar panels from four Southeast Asian countries, in connection with a complaint filed last year by major U.S.-based solar manufacturers.

The tariffs varied widely depending on the company and country, ranging from just over 41% on Jinko Solar products from Malaysia to over 375% on products manufactured by Trina Solar in Thailand. New Schedule: Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer four round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.

Gunshot wound, infection kill Kui Buri elephant

A wild elephant believed to be between 50 and 60 years old has died after becoming trapped in a muddy waterhole in Kui Buri National Park. Authorities later discovered a bullet embedded in the animal’s body and signs of a severe internal infection, possibly contributing to its death.

Anuchart Art-han, head of Kui Buri National Park, reported that on Saturday, a concerned local resident notified park officials after spotting the elephant stuck in a muddy pool near Ban Ruam Thai, Moo 7, Hat Kham subdistrict, Kui Buri District. Two more bodies recovered as death toll of collapsed building rises to 51

Two more bodies have been recovered from the rubble of the collapsed 30-story building in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, bringing the death toll to 51, a rescue official confirmed yesterday. As of yesterday morning, 43 individuals were still missing.

Stores urged to keep pork prices stable

The Department of Internal Trade (DIT) is encouraging retail and wholesale stores to keep pork prices stable, despite recent increases driven by a decline in supply.

Surat Thani School Stunned by Massive King Cobra

Residents of Don Sak, Surat Thani, were shocked to find a massive king cobra roaming outside Baan Nang Kam Community School yesterday. Local rescue teams who captured the snake without incident. Snapshots of the rescue effort showed the snake, locally known as a bong la, gliding across the road. Upon successful capture, the giant king cobra was safely released into a remote forest. Fires pollute Mae Hong Son, 61 hotspots detected

Mae Hong Son was blanketed by unhealthy ultra-fine dust yesterday as wildfires continued to spread across the northern province, with 61 live hotspots detected.

Fire guts Chiang Mai’s Lanna-style Dhara Dhevi Hotel

A fire destroyed the debt-burdened Lanna-style Dhara Dhevi Hotel in Muang district early this morning. There were no casualties. Dozens of fire crews and engines responded. It took them three hours to control the blaze at the famous hotel in tambon Tha Sala.

A Thai-Chinese company yesterday denied allegations its steel rods did not pass safety standard tests after nationwide criticism prompted an investigation into the collapse of a high-rise building under construction after an earthquake last month in Bangkok.

Remains of 18 more people recovered from collapsed SAO building

Search teams found partial remains of what are believed to be 18 people under the debris of the collapsed SAO building during yesterday and overnight, said Suriyachai Rawiwan, director of the Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). All the remains were have been taken to the Forensic Medicine Institute for identification.

Deputy Bangkok Gov. Tavida Kamolvej says that the BMA sought help from the Thai Embassy in Myanmar, by collecting DNA samples from relatives of missing Myanmar nationals, to be used in the identification process, adding that 97 sets of DNA have been collected so far. – thaipbs.com

DSI Arrests Chinese Tycoon Linked to Collapsed Government Building

Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has arrested a prominent Chinese businessman in connection with an alleged nominee shareholding arrangement linked to the collapsed 30-story State Audit Office building, which was under construction by China Railway No. 10 (Thailand) Co.

Chuanling Zhang, a key shareholder and director of the company, was apprehended at a luxury hotel in Bangkok’s Ratchadaphisek area after being under surveillance for two days. He was taken into custody following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the Criminal Court under Sections 37 and 41 of the Foreign Business Act B.E. 2542 (1999), which prohibits foreign nationals from using Thai nominees to circumvent business ownership restrictions. Seven earthquakes were recorded in Mae Hong Son and along the Myanmar border this morning, according to the Thai Meteorological Department’s Earthquake Observation Division.

Between midnight and 7 am, six of the quakes had their epicenters in Myanmar, while one occurred in Pai District, Mae Hong Son. The strongest tremor, measuring 4.3 in magnitude, struck Myanmar at 4.17 am. Continued …

Seven Dead as Runaway Bus Slams into Trucks and Bursts into Flames

At least seven people have died and 39 others were injured after a passenger bus suffered brake failure and plowed into three trucks before catching fire in a crash this morning.

A 32-year-old woman had a terrifying brush with death when she discovered a cobra hiding under the seat of her motorbike as she was on her way to work on Friday.

Is using the Chinese greeting “ni hao” (你好 or hello) on Thais by Westerners considered a racist move? The question was fiercely debated when a video showing a national park adviser in Krabi province telling a Russian couple that their vacation on an island is over after they were found enjoying themselves on the island during off-limits period by hiring a guide to take the boat there. When informed about why it’s not permissible, the Russian man replied to Siranath Bhiromphakdee, AKA Sai Scott, the park adviser, with the word “ni hao”.

Will the global economy stall?

The timing could hardly have been less propitious. Just as the world economy was showing signs of stabilizing, the odds of a policy-induced global recession have risen significantly. The latest update to the Brookings-FT Tiger index reveals a mixed picture, with the financial index declining and private-sector confidence crumbling, even as macroeconomic data (which lag the other indicators) suggest a more benign scenario.

Obviously, the biggest factor is U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policy, which has disrupted world trade and fueled turmoil in financial markets, undermining growth prospects that had looked promising at the start of the year. The U.S. economy performed well in the first quarter of 2025: output and employment grew robustly through March, and inflation fell gradually. Songkran road accidents claim 253 lives, down 12%

The “seven dangerous days” of traveling on the road for this year’s Songkran holidays ended on Thursday, with the accumulated death toll reaching 253, a 12% decline from the same period last year.

The Road Safety Operation Center reported yesterday there were 147 traffic accidents, 145 injuries and 22 deaths on the last day of the period. This led to a total of 1,538 accidents and 1,495 injuries recorded between April 11 and April 17. Continued …

Severe storms hit Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai

Severe summer storms yesterday battered the northern provinces of Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, causing widespread damage. In Chiang Rai’s Mae Suai district, strong winds brought down high-voltage power poles, leading to overnight blackouts in the Doi Chang and Ban Saen Charoen areas.

Bangkok set for major law shake-up after 40 years

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) announced plans to revise the BMA Act 1985, a 40-year-old law that city leaders say no longer meets the needs of a bustling 21st-century metropolis.

Government set to lift martial law in south

The government is set to lift martial law in four districts of the three southern border provinces, says Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.

He said he plans to meet state agencies to discuss the lifting of martial law after a mobile cabinet meeting in Songkhla on Feb. 17–18 decided the enforcement of martial law in four districts of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat should be revoked. Continued …

Police Rescue Kidnapped Indian Nationals in Bangkok

In a successful operation in Bangkok, police rescued four Indian nationals who were kidnapped by fellow countrymen in a ransom scheme. The rescue mission unfolded after Sanjeeve Kumar, an Indian resident in Bangkok, approached Yannawa Police Station on April 16 to report the abduction of his friends, Ramesh Sharmar and Amandeep Kajal.

Kumar recounted that upon arriving in Bangkok on April 5, he, Sharmar, and Kajal initially stayed at a hotel in Sathon before moving to Silom. During their stay, they met an Indian national who offered an invitation to Vietnam. Due to visa delays, Kumar could not accompany them and allowed his friends to proceed alone on April 14. Thailand Assists Major Wildlife Smuggling Bust

In May 2024, authorities uncovered a major wildlife smuggling operation in Dan Singkhorn, southern Thailand, near the Myanmar border.

Six smugglers, transporting wildlife in four vehicles via Sumatra, Indonesia, were arrested, along with an associate who operated a holding facility. Songkran road toll 171, mainly from speeding and drink-driving

Traffic accidents killed 171 people and injured 1,208 others during the first five days of the Songkran holiday, as of Tuesday night. Officials reported yesterday that from April 11-15 there were 1,216 reported traffic accidents nationwide in which 171 people were killed and 1,208 others were injured.

The southern province of Phatthalung reported the highest number of accidents, 44, Bangkok the most traffic accident fatalities, 15, and the northern province of Lampang the most road injuries, 47. Continued …

Twelve mild earthquakes were recorded in Myanmar and northern Thailand today, with magnitudes ranging from 1.6 to 3.5, according to the Thai Meteorological Department. The Earthquake Observation Division of the department stated that two of these earthquakes occurred in Thailand.

138 Deaths in First Four Days of Songkran’s ‘Seven Dangerous Days’

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has reported a total of 138 deaths and 1,002 injuries from 1,000 road accidents across Thailand during the first four days (April 11–14) of the Songkran festival’s road safety campaign.

Speeding and drunk driving remain the leading causes of road crashes, accounting for 44.4% and 24.9% of incidents, respectively. Poor visibility contributed to 14.5% of the crashes. Motorcycles were involved in 77.2% of all crashes, with most incidents occurring on straight roads (85.9%), particularly on highways and rural village roads. Continued …

Sales of alcoholic beverages to underage buyers and illegal promotion of alcoholic beverages were apparent during the Songkran holidays, says StopDrink Network, an NGO-run alcohol watch organization.

Major alcoholic brands in Thailand organized various promotional events including concerts or sales booths at 137 or more locations nationwide, said Teera Watcharapranee, director of StopDrink Network. These activities violated alcohol control and excise tax laws, he said. Continued …

Thailand, along with the rest of Southeast Asia, got some temporary relief when U.S. President Donald Trump chose to delay his “Liberation Day” tariffs by 90 days. Now, the country’s U.S.-bound exports only have a 10% tariff, as opposed to the 36% threatened by Trump.

“Reciprocal tariffs, we thought, were excessively high,” said Victor Cheng, the CEO of Delta Electronics Thailand, last week before Trump announced his tariff pause. U.S. actions were causing “anxiety and great concern,” Cheng said, but noted that customers had yet to change or cancel any orders as a result of the tariffs and were instead adopting a wait-and-see attitude. Cheng added later, after Trump paused his tariffs, that customers are using the 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs to “stock up.” Continued …

Songkran Road Death Toll Reaches 100 After Three Days

Authorities have reported a 100 fatalities and 752 injuries from 756 road crashes in the first three days of the Songkran holiday period, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).

The leading causes of the accidents were speeding (44.3%), drink-driving (29%), and abrupt lane changes (17.9%). Motorcycles were involved in 85.9% of the reported incidents, with straight road sections accounting for the majority of crashes (81.4%). Most accidents occurred between 6 pm and 9 pm. Continued …

1,472 Drink-Driving Cases Reported in First Three Days of Songkran

The Department of Probation has revealed that within the first three days of the Songkran holiday period this year, there have been 1,579 traffic-related cases dealt with, under court-ordered probation orders, with 1,472 involving drink-driving offenses. Chiang Mai ranks highest in the country with 136 cases, followed by Samut Prakan (123 cases) and Bangkok (118 cases).

Police Lt. Col. Suriya Singhakomol, director-general of the Department of Probation, emphasized the department’s strict monitoring measures being used. These include the use of electronic monitoring (EM) bracelets ordered by the courts, and collaboration with local police stations to track driver behavior through CCTV footage. Continued …

Pickup Truck Ploughs Through Songkran Revellers, Injuring Nearly 20, Driver Beaten by Mob

An incident marred Songkran celebrations in Chachoengsao province yesterday when a pickup truck driver rammed through a large crowd of water festival revellers, injuring nearly 20 people, six of them seriously. The chaotic aftermath saw an enraged crowd of over a hundred people drag the driver from the vehicle and beat him severely before police arrived.

The driver’s motives remain unclear, but according to onlookers, he appeared to deliberately speed into the crowd. As panic turned to fury, the crowd smashed the truck’s windows and attacked the man inside. Two more bodies found under collapsed building, death toll rises to 43

Two more bodies were discovered in Zone C of the collapsed 30-story building in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district yesterday, bringing the confirmed death toll to 43, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported.

The under-construction State Audit Office (SAO) building on Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road collapsed on March 28 due to the impact of an 8.2-magnitude earthquake near Mandalay, Myanmar, trapping over a hundred workers inside. Continued …

Changed elevator shaft design may be behind SAO building collapse

The government-appointed investigating committee currently thinks that a change in the design of the elevator shaft of the State Audit Office building, reducing its wall thickness from 30cm to 25cm, may be the reason why the building collapsed when it was hit by tremors from an earthquake in Myanmar on March 28, according to Prof. Amorn Pimanmas, president of the Association of Structural Engineers.

He said the investigation will examine the details of the elevator shaft, including its design, how and by whom the design was changed, and the quality of the concrete and rebar used in its construction. Continued …

A 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck Khlong Khamao subdistrict of Krabi province yesterday, about 791 kilometers from Bangkok. The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI), in collaboration with the Earthquake Research Center of Thailand, provided a summary of the earthquake that occurred at 2:27 pm.

The 3.5-magnitude quake struck Khlong Khamao subdistrict of Krabi province, near the Khlong Marui Fault Line, about 791 kilometers from Bangkok. The tremor could be felt in some of the nearby areas. Continued …

Thailand may now be in ‘technical recession’

Thailand’s economy may have slipped into a technical recession, with gross domestic product (GDP) estimated to have contracted in two consecutive quarters, according to Pongnakorn Pochakorn, a macroeconomics expert at the Fiscal Policy Office (FPO).

A new official revision of the FPO’s previous economic projection was expected to be released on April 28, he said. Songkran: The world’s biggest water fight

Every year from April 13-15, Thais across the country cool off and celebrate new beginnings with what is arguably the nation’s largest and most important festival: Songkran. Tied to the Thai New Year and the close of the annual rice harvest season, this annual celebration is all about purification, honoring elders and fostering a sense of renewal. However, it’s most well-known among travelers as a raucous country-wide splash fest.

59 Dead, 458 Injured in First Two Days of Songkran Holiday Travel

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reported statistics on the second day of Thailand’s Songkran holiday road safety campaign, with 59 people killed and 458 injured in road crashes nationwide.

On April 12 alone, there were 248 road accidents, resulting in 30 fatalities and 257 injuries. The most common causes were speeding (39.9%), drink-driving (22.2%), and abrupt lane cutting (21%). The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) has warned about summer storms during the Songkran festival. Thunderstorms, strong winds, and potential hail are expected, especially in the upper northeastern and northern regions. From April 10 to 12, increased rainfall is anticipated in the south.

As millions of Thais prepare to celebrate the Songkran holiday, the government has unveiled an extensive road safety initiative to reduce traffic accidents and fatalities. Radar Detects Potential Survivor in Collapsed Bangkok Building

Rescue workers from the Phetkasem Foundation have reported a significant breakthrough at the site of the collapsed Auditor General’s Office building. They detected a mobile phone signal emanating from beneath the debris and subsequent radar scans have located what appears to be a human body approximately three meters below the surface, with rescuers estimating a 90% likelihood that the individual is alive.

Snake handler rescues Satun family from giant king cobras

A renowned snake handler was called to assist a rubber plantation family in Satun province after discovering a pair of giant king cobras had made a nest and laid 29 eggs near their plantation. The presence of these snakes had halted rubber-tapping activities for the family residing in Palm Pattana subdistrict, Manang district, since March.

Snake handler Bang Ya Bongla King was initially unable to assist due to his observance of Ramadan, but he promptly traveled to the site after the fasting month ended. Thailand’s ‘second’ tiger population stable, but barriers to expansion persist

Populations of the critically endangered Indochinese tigers in eastern Thailand’s forest reserves remained stable between 2018 and 2021, but a shortage of prey and the presence of highways prevented their expansion to promising habitat, a recent study has found.

Scientists have been monitoring Indochinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti) populations across the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai forest complex since 2008. They’ve even found evidence of the tigers breeding. Thailand Requires Digital Arrival Card Submission 3 Days Before Entry

Starting May 1, foreign visitors heading to Thailand must fill in an online arrival card before their trip, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) website, created by the Immigration Bureau, is ready to capture essential traveler details. Smart app versions on Android and iOS will soon be available to make the process even smoother.

Diplomatic workers, some international organization members, and foreign officials in Thailand are exempt. This digital shift replaces the TM6 paper card, which was discontinued last year. Thailand welcomes 9.55 million foreign tourists in Q1, Chinese remain no.1

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has reported that 9,549,004 foreign tourists entered Thailand during the first three months of 2025 (Jan. 1–March 31) marking a modest 1.9% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
