Bank of Thailand Forecasts Modest Growth for Remainder of 2024

The Bank of Thailand anticipates slower economic growth in the upcoming third and fourth quarters, attributing this to a high base effect. These projections were shared during a monetary policy forum held yesterday.

The central bank now estimates the growth rate for the third and fourth quarters to be between 0.6% and 0.7% per quarter due to the high base effect. Despite this deceleration, economic activities are predicted to increase, driven by improved domestic demand, a recovery in tourism, and accelerated government budget disbursement. Continued …

Kaiyo Window Films

Kaiyo Window Films is a previous sponsor of Hua Hin Expat News but had to discontinue its position here during the Covid-19 pandemic. They are back now to offer local businesses and home-owning expat readers the best in solar and ultraviolet protection for their homes.

If your building uses air conditioning, you may not feel you have a need to control solar heat gain. However, the fact is fuel costs are spiraling and the excessive use of AC systems plays a significant part in climate change. It has become environmentally damaging and financially costly to allow the sun’s heat to enter a building, only then to be artificially cooled.

KAIYO Window Films Co., Ltd., has 9 years experience in Thailand, and more than 27 years experience in all aspects of solar control and privacy window film application in the UK and Europe, offers the same high standard and invaluable knowledge gained by our experience using the best U.S and Korean-made films with a 5- to 10-year guarantee, and latest high-tech measuring equipment here in Thailand. All our installers are trained by Kaiyo experts or are approved installers from the manufacturers.

We can supply both Nano and Carbon Ceramic films, and films suitable for double glazing. We only use specialized architectural window films on residential and commercial buildings!

We have established direct working relationship with Pure8 Developments, who built the luxury Ban Ing Phu Development and Ban Rom Yen at Springfield Royal Country Club. We now also work closely together with Beautiful World Furniture and White Beach Villas, plus having worked directly with customers in most developments in Hua Hin, having great feedback and recommendations with a 5* Google Rating.

Kaiyo also has completed large projects at Amanpuri 5* residential properties in Phuket, the CAE Flight training center for Air Asia in Bangkok, as well as, locally, Nana Dental Clinic, Bangkok Hospital and Kuiburiwittaya School in Kuiburi.

Installing solar-control window films in your office, hotel or business premises is a cost-effective way to reduce your energy usage for cooling, therefore generating more profits and keeping in line with legislation for business energy usage.

Re: New tax on foreigner income

It is upsetting the Thai tax authorities want to double tax expatriate retirees, etc. As most of us live on a fixed income, it is already difficult to pay for food, rent, utilities, etc.

Many of us pay heavily to support a Thai family and outside relatives with consistent monetary support. Now we are to be burdened with additional taxation? In many countries where we originated from, we are already taxed heavily and every dollar counts.

This new idea of double taxing expatriates will have unintended consequences for Thai revenue aspirations. Many retired people will not be able to pay more tax than they already are already paying in their home countries. Or, even if they are able, they will deeply resent being double taxed. This idea of double taxation will have unintended consequences for the Thai economy.

“Many of us who have bought homes and condos will sadly be leaving Thailand. Some of us who support entire Thai families will reluctantly be doing the same. Those who are renting homes or apartments can leave more easily. The Thai economy will be impacted by the exodus of retired expats. This is an ill conceived idea but I am sure this Thai double tax will continue to be enacted by the Thai tax enforcers.

“Many foreigners who have lived in Thailand for years or even decades will soon leave Thailand, and not look back. It feels like the Thai government, by double taxing us, does not want foreigner retirees to live in Thailand. If that is their goal then they will surely succeed.” – Left Already

(Editor note: Scores of countries already have tax agreements with Thailand that will protect expats living in Thailand from the planned tax. The author apparently hails from a country that does not have such a tax treaty with Thailand. Expats from those countries will definitely feel the effects.)

Older banknotes pushed for occasions

The Bank of Thailand has requested consumers use banknotes that are already in circulation to mark special occasions, rather than demanding newly printed ones, to allow for the longer time frame that banknotes are now in circulation.

Foreign tourist arrivals came to 3.04 million in May, up 9.6% from the same month in 2019 and marking the third straight month at more than three million, the Japan National Tourism Organization said Wednesday. The weak yen has helped spur visitor numbers. Continued …

Doi Inthanon National Park: A biodiverse treasure

It was starting to drizzle and the mountain was shrouded in a sea of mist, making it difficult to see the winding roads leading to Ang Ka Nature Trail nestled in Chiang Mai’s Doi Inthanon National Park. There’s something alluring about traveling in the rainy season, when the forest becomes green and provides a sanctuary from the heat.

It’s called Ang Ka, which means Crow Pond in Thai, since many crows come to bathe here. With its swamp ecosystem, the trail is home to more than 490 different species of bird, as well as rare plants and wildlife, including sphagnum moss and stunning red rhododendron, which serves as a food source for the green-tailed sunbird, ashy-throated warbler, Doi Inthanon frog and Himalayan newt. Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya

Unmissable things to do in Pattaya

Few places in Southeast Asia have taken to tourism as quickly as Pattaya. It used to be a small fishing village until the early 1960s, when American servicemen found the community and kept coming back. By the 1980s, nightclubs, resorts and apartment complexes had sprung up to cater for growing numbers of travelers.

Today, you’ll find everything that makes Thailand so special — the loud and the quiet, side by side. Some of the best things to do in Pattaya take you to temples, stages, beach towels, the saddle of a jet ski, and a floating market. Continued …

Hua Hin Airport to Become International Hub by 2025

In an ambitious stride to elevate Thailand’s aviation clout, Hua Hin Airport in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province is set for a dramatic overhaul. The newly dubbed Phetch-Hua Hin International Airport aims for completion by late 2025.

Golfing in Hua Hin

Few golf course deals can equal the one hatched on the Royal Hua Hin course in 1932. In the middle of a game, Siam’s King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) learned that a powerful alliance of bureaucrats and soldiers in Bangkok were demanding he replace his country’s 700-year old absolute monarchy with a constitutional one. The king reportedly said to his golfing partners “I told you so” and played on. And thus began Siam- Thailand’s sometimes-rocky journey toward democracy.

Golf is still the hottest game in town, with Hua Hin regularly hosting major local and Asian tournaments. It all began when Thailand’s first golf course, Royal Hua Hin, opened here in the 1920s (legend has it that the caddies first had to chase tigers off the fairways). Today, there are nine quality courses along the stretch of the Gulf of Thailand between Cha Am, 20km to the north, and Hua Hin, making this virtually the Gulf of Golf. Continued …

Thai Condos Slump Amid Economic, Myanmar Woes

Prasert Taedulyasatit, president of the Thai Condominium Assn., said yesterday that the Myanmar government’s strict control over condominium purchases in Thailand has affected sales. Currently, Myanmar nationals are the second largest group of buyers after Chinese nationals.

It is expected that this restriction will further worsen the real estate market in the second quarter and continue the negative trend from the first quarter. Foreign demand is crucial, especially when domestic purchasing power is weak due to high household debt and the continued refusal to borrow. Nevertheless, customers from Myanmar still make up a small proportion compared to Chinese buyers, who remain the largest customer group. Continued …

Professor warns against reclassifying cannabis as illegal narcotic

Professor Panthep Puapongphan, dean of the College of Oriental Medicine at Rangsit University, voiced concerns regarding efforts to reclassify cannabis as an illegal narcotic. He says that such a move could worsen drug-related issues rather than improve them.

Panthep stressed that cannabis has played a significant role in helping individuals quit more harmful substances like methamphetamine and heroin. He argued that data comparing post-decriminalization periods with the lockdown year of 2021 is misleading, as fluctuations in psychiatric cases were more likely due to the Covid-19 pandemic rather than cannabis use. These Common Money Practices Can Be Offensive In Thailand

In the United States, handling money is a very mundane, laissez-faire thing — there are no particular rules that delineate how you’re supposed to hold, give, or respect those precious dollar bills. When Americans travel abroad, they might bring along cultural practices that are second nature.

However, some of these seemingly innocuous actions can actually be deeply offensive in other cultures. If you’re headed for Thailand, a bucket list country where the U.S. dollar is strong, do beware. In the “Land of Smiles,” a country with a rich cultural heritage and deep-seated traditions, the way you treat the local currency — the Thai baht — can significantly impact how you are perceived.
