Thailand’s Alcohol Control Committee has rejected the State Railway of Thailand’s (SRT) appeal to permit alcohol sales on trains and at the bustling Hua Lamphong station. This decision resonates with a longstanding policy reflecting the country’s commitment to public safety and health.

Chaired by Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin, the recent committee meeting witnessed the denial of SRT’s proposal. Panumat Yannawetsakul, the director-general of the Disease Control Department, conveyed that the SRT must reconsider and resubmit their proposal at an upcoming session, citing concerns that require attention. Due to a significant decline in coffee bean production, Thailand will need to import approximately 80,000 tons of coffee beans, instant coffee, and other coffee products this year, a senior government official stated yesterday.

Thantita Boonyamaneekul, deputy secretary-general of the Office of Agricultural Economics, revealed that in 2023 Thailand produced 15,651 tons of coffee beans, consisting of 10,682 tons of Arabica and 4,969 tons of Robusta. Continued …

Breaking Up with Caffeine: Can Coffee-Free Brews Satisfy?

For most of us, coffee has been the heartbeat of our mornings. It’s the fuel of our deadlines, the companion to our slow Sunday afternoons and an experience that we like to absorb ourselves in.

But in the ever-expanding wellness universe, conversations around anxiety, adrenal fatigue, and the perils of over-caffeination have become louder. The quiet movement of caffeine-free alternatives like date-seed coffee, mushroom coffee, and chicory blends has become prominent. Can caffeine-free coffee alternatives offer the same satisfaction? Many individuals are trafficked into these centers by organized gangs. Continued …

Pact expected to help double trade with European Union

The Thailand-EU free trade agreement (FTA), expected to be signed this year, will help double Thailand’s trade with the European Union (EU) from its current level, according to Somjai Phagaphasvivat, an independent political and economic analyst.

Thailand already signed a partnership cooperation agreement (PCA), which is a crucial first step toward a bilateral FTA. Following the 2014 coup, the EU suspended negotiations with Thailand. The PCA points out that any country entering into an FTA with the bloc must be a free democracy that upholds human rights. Continued …

The way to lose an entire decade

The 2020s are shaping up to be a lost decade, at best, for economic growth. This will be particularly bad for emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) in the short term, but it will leave us all worse off, not least by undermining the global fight against climate change.

The parallels with the 1930s – when the world also faced a major economic shock, intensifying protectionism, growing nationalism, and the weakening of multilateralism – make the situation appear all the more ominous. Then, like now, geopolitics was king. Continued …

Despite government crackdowns, the number of undocumented Thai workers overseas remains high, with 382,699 working illegally last year alone.

While Thailand sent 92,392 legal workers abroad in 2024, a drop of 11% from 2023 due to conflicts in Israel, remittances surged by 9%, reaching 267.8 billion baht, up from 245.7 billion baht in 2023. Continued …

Phuket Hotels Unfazed by Potential 30-Day Visa Limit Change

Phuket hoteliers remain calm amid possible reductions in Thailand’s visa-free period from 60 to 30 days. This strategy, devised by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, aims to mitigate the misuse of visa privileges by foreigners engaging in illicit activities. While this change may rattle some sectors, hotel operators in Phuket maintain an optimistic outlook grounded in current travel patterns.

Suksit Suvunditkul, the president of the southern chapter of the Thai Hotels Assn. (THA), highlights that European visitors generally book two-week stays. Guests looking for extended residencies tend to prefer condominiums over hotels. Consequently, Suksit suggests the proposed visa adjustment will more significantly influence the condo rental market than the hotel industry. Continued …

British octogenarians swapping ‘dreary’ care homes for Thai luxury

Arriving at the Chiang Mai Care Resort in northern Thailand, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re at a standard-issue, luxury Thai resort. A series of low-roof bungalows separated by palm trees and lush tropical plants are dotted around a peaceful lake.

At one end are two swimming pools offering a respite from the heat, at another, an outdoor restaurant has views across the distant mountains. It’s only the sight of a nurse in uniform or a resident being gently pushed in a wheelchair that hints this is a care home rather than a hotel. Continued …

Probe into Kok River Water Quality Amid Gold Mining Concerns

Thailand’s chief of defense forces, Gen. Songwit Noonpackdee, has directed government agencies to immediately investigate the water quality of the Kok River following mounting local concerns over possible toxic contamination from gold mining activities on the Myanmar side.

Songwit, who also serves as director of the Center for Coordinating the Prevention and Mitigation of Threats Affecting Border Security, noted that while regular monitoring of the Sai River in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai, has generally shown that water turbidity remains within safe toxin limits this year, reports from the Mae Sai mayor indicate that the river still appears dark — suggesting heavy contamination. “I am truly concerned about the Sai River; I cannot remain indifferent,” he stated. Thailand To Cut Visa-Free Stay to 30 Days to Combat Abuse

Thailand is set to reduce its visa-free stay allowance from 60 days to 30 days, a move aimed at curbing the misuse of the visa exemption for illegal business activities. The decision, agreed upon in principle by relevant authorities, is spearheaded by the Tourism and Sports Ministry.

Sorawong Thienthong, Tourism and Sports minister, stated that the Foreign Ministry has acknowledged the issue following extensive discussions with stakeholders over the past weeks. They collectively decided to shorten the visa-free period, but more discussions are necessary before the official announcement. Continued …

Investigation deepens into foreign-owned businesses, nominee operations in Hua Hin

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has announced that it is investigating foreign-owned businesses or nominee operations in key tourist areas, following concerns raised by a former member of Parliament in Phuket.

Nationwide, the ministry has conducted inspections in six key areas: Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya, Chonburi, Hua Hin, and Surat Thani. As a result, 40 tourism business licenses have been revoked in 2024 due to illegal changes in board members and shareholding structures. In one instance, a foreign-controlled business in Phuket had to have its license revoked, and legal action is being taken against two companies suspected of nominee operations. Continued …

Government Under Fire Over Rama II Construction Accidents

The Thailand Structural Engineers Association (TSEA) has laid the blame for recent construction-site accidents along Rama II Road squarely at the feet of the government. This crucial artery, linking Bangkok to the country’s southern reaches, has been marred by mishaps, with the latest calamity claiming six workers’ lives on Saturday.

The TSEA attributes these tragic incidents to insufficient adherence to safety standards. As Amorn Pimanmas, TSEA’s president, said, the frequent accidents starkly highlight the peril posed to both workers and the public by safety regulation non-compliance. Continued …

Increased risk on Rama II Road due to land subsidence, rising sea levels

An academic has warned that the completion of construction projects along Rama II Road could lead to more accidents due to land subsidence, rising sea levels and climate change.

A comprehensive analysis of paddy field burning emissions

Paddy field burning, a common practice post-harvest to clear agricultural residues, is widespread in rice-producing regions such as Thailand and ASEAN countries. This method releases significant pollutants, including particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), and short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) like black carbon (BC).

These emissions degrade air quality, impacting human health and climate change. This study conducts a comprehensive analysis of paddy field burning emissions in Thailand from 2018 to 2022. Continued …

Trying to Understand the Logic of Thailand’s 10,000 Baht Handout

As a country with pronounced political polarization, Thailand is used to divisive debates in which the arguments on both sides have merit. But when it comes to the ruling Pheu Thai Party’s economic stimulus program of handing out 10,000 baht ($298) to all Thais aged 16 and older, the debate is increasingly less about whether it’s a bad idea and more about just how bad it is.

Following an announcement last week, the stimulus program is now advancing to its third phase. After distributing money to 14.5 million vulnerable individuals – 12.4 million state welfare card holders and 2.1 million disabled people – in the first phase and 4 million elderly citizens in the second, the third phase will direct payments to 2.7 million youths aged 16 to 20. The Thai economy is navigating turbulent waters, as the nation’s employment landscape reveals ominous signs of distress. Recent coverage from the Federation of Thai SMEs highlights a concerning drop in insured workers under Section 33 of the Social Security Act, affecting over 10 million people and signaling troubling times for job seekers.

The woes don’t stop there. Sangchai Theerakulvanich, president of the federation, points to a surge in business closures and stagnation, reflected in negative financial statements submitted to the Revenue Department. This, he argues, showcases companies’ battles to remain afloat amid escalating production costs and global economic strains. Continued …

World’s biggest stock rout deepens as Thai market rescue falters

An ambitious campaign to revive Thailand’s battered stock market is falling flat, as entrenched pessimism about the economy accelerates a foreign funds exodus.

Seven months after $4.5 billion was newly injected into the Vayupak Fund, analysts have been left perplexed by how little it’s helped the benchmark SET Index. The stock gauge has tumbled more than 16% this year, making it the world’s worst performer among 92 indexes tracked by Bloomberg. Over the past 12 months, foreigners pulled out $4.2 billion, the most across Southeast Asia. Continued …

Phuket’s Tourism Surge Sparks Soaring Demand for Long-Stay Property Investments

Thailand’s booming tourism industry is driving a substantial increase in long-term property investments, with Phuket emerging as a prime destination for regional buyers seeking lifestyle properties with strong rental returns.

According to a recent report by C9 Hotelworks, international arrivals at Phuket International Airport surged by 23% in 2024, reaching 8.65 million visitors. This influx is reshaping the local real estate market, leading to growing demand for resort-style condominiums and branded residences, particularly from investors in Thailand, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Former Minister Reveals Alleged Phuket Police Extortion of Tourists

Former finance minister Sommai Phasee has made explosive claims about corrupt police practices in Phuket, suggesting tourists are being extorted for bribes. According to Sommai, officers are reportedly stopping foreign visitors — particularly those on motorcycles — for minor violations and demanding on-the-spot payments ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 baht to avoid arrest.

Sharing his allegations online, Sommai expressed his frustrations, stating that corruption is a pervasive issue throughout Thailand. His revelations have prompted serious concerns about the impact of such practices on the country’s reputation as a tourist hotspot. Continued …

Following the easing of Covid-19, global tourism has experienced a resurgence, bolstered by the Thai government’s visa-free policy. This has led to a continuous increase in tourists visiting Thailand.

This hidden lake near Chiang Mai offers royal luxury for $3

In Thailand’s northern hills lies a haven so serene that locals escape here every weekend, yet most international travelers never discover it. Huay Tung Tao Lake sits just 12 minutes from Chiang Mai’s bustling Old City, but feels worlds away from the tourist-packed temples and night markets.

Created in 1983 under King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s vision to combat water scarcity, this reservoir has transformed into something extraordinary. What began as practical infrastructure now serves as Chiang Mai’s outdoor living room – a place where time slows and the majestic Doi Pui mountain creates a backdrop worthy of a film set. Thailand travel without the tourists

The new season of The White Lotus is upon us, or rather it’s upon Thailand. Hundreds of thousands of tourists are expected to descend on the paradisiacal setting of Koh Samui, while cashed-up guests at the island’s Four Seasons are already requesting upgrades to the $10,000-a-night villas featured in the show.

For a country that already struggles with overtourism, Thailand is bracing for impact. Local environmentalists are feeling uneasy and quite rightly, too – the Thai government closed Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi for four years in 2018 after boat anchors and propellers, sunscreen contaminants, and sewage destroyed the corals and marine life off the white-sand bay after it went mainstream in the 1999 movie The Beach. Thailand is going green in a big way, with Phuket at the forefront of a bold push to revolutionize sustainable tourism. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) has launched the Green Hotel Plus Phuket Sandbox project, a key initiative to raise hotel sustainability standards to global levels.

Minister Chalermchai Sri-on stressed that while Thailand’s booming tourism industry generated a staggering 1.67 trillion baht last year, the sector also poses serious environmental challenges. With Phuket alone emitting 3.16 million tons of greenhouse gases, the government is racing to transform the industry into a low-carbon, climate-friendly sector. Continued …

Early Warning System Achieves Sustainable Human-Elephant Coexistence

Elephants have long been intertwined with Thai history and way of life, symbolizing the king’s royal power, as they were trained for combat, and playing a crucial role in transportation and labor before the advent of machinery.

Currently, Thailand is home to over 4,000 wild elephants scattered across 91 protected areas. While the increasing elephant population is a positive sign for conservation, their natural habitat has been shrinking due to agricultural and community expansion, leading to overlapping living spaces between humans and elephants. Pattaya’s shift to Asian tourists leaves Europeans searching elsewhere

With Songkran approaching, the question arises whether the weakening baht will entice European tourists back to Pattaya or if the city has already become a hub primarily for Chinese, Indian, and Russian visitors. However, despite these currency shifts, European tourist numbers in Pattaya may not see a significant boost. Many European travelers, once a dominant presence in Pattaya, may now opt for quieter destinations in Thailand or other Southeast Asian countries where the atmosphere better suits their expectations. Hua Hin’s Chiva-Som celebrating 30 years

“Venerable” might seem an odd word to describe a wellness resort. After all, they tend to promote the tireless pursuit of “eternal youth” or at least increased healthspan. But it feels apposite in the case of Chiva-Som.

Thirty years ago, when it first opened, the “spa scene” was a more binary affair than it is today: “fat farms” on the one hand, white-coated medical facilities on the other. Chiva-Som offered something different. Continued …

The deep South’s concerns can’t wait forever

The phone rings. I hold my breath. Every time there’s news of an attack in Narathiwat, my hometown, I call my dad to check. It’s a ritual now. One I wish I didn’t have to follow.

“Are you safe?” I ask, trying to sound calm. “We’re fine. I could hear the bomb – it was about two kilometers away from the house.” His voice is steady, almost resigned. No panic, just the exhaustion of someone who has lived through this for too long. Then, a pause. “Don’t come home yet. It’s not safe.” I was planning to go home this week. Continued …

Plans Unveiled for 900 Million Overpass Project in Prachuap Khiri Khan

The Department of Highways has revealed plans to build a 3.4-kilometer elevated overpass at the Prachuap Khiri Khan junction, set to improve traffic flow across 14 southern provinces. The project, which carries an estimated cost of 900 million baht, is scheduled to begin later this year.

Yesterday, Prachuap Khiri Khan Gov. Sittichai Sawatsan chaired a meeting to discuss the overpass project, which will be located at the intersection of Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road) and Highway 326 (Prachuap Khiri Khan Junction). The meeting was attended by representatives from the Department of Highways, local engineers, and over 80 members of the public. Continued …

Hua Hin couple’s assault case still in the courts

There is much, too much, we do not know about the vicious attacks on the Middlesborough couple in Hua Hin, which have dominated the Thai-UK news channels in recent days. Much of the rhetoric has been devoted to criticism of the Thai legal system and the horrors of being British even before a Thai court has had the chance to hear the evidence.

The initial attack on Des and Mary appears to have occurred in December 2023 after a controversy with neighbors (one Thai and one Brit in some reports) about a land border dispute. Presumably the matter has had some adjudication since the violent neighbors, we are told, initially pleaded guilty to serious assault but later – presumably in mid or late 2024 – changed their plea and accused the Middlesborough couple of “superficial injury and mental anguish”. Public polled on power rates

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) is asking the public whether they want to continue with the same electricity rate of 4.15 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), which is the cheapest of three options for the period from May to August. The current power tariff of 4.15 baht a unit is applicable until the end of April.

The other two options are 4.95 baht a unit or 5.16 baht a unit, which would let ERC allocate more money from electricity bills to the reimbursement of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), PTT Plc and gas shippers, which spent money to help the government subsidize power prices. Thai baht’s gold-fueled rally is now at risk, strategists say

Thailand’s currency has received a boost this year from a rally in gold prices. But strategists warn that won’t be enough to protect it as tariff risks and interest-rate cuts start to bite.

The baht is up around 1.2% against the dollar this year, more than double the gain of a broad gauge of Asian currencies. A key reason is Thailand’s role as a gold-trading hub, which has helped lift the currency as the precious metal hit new highs. Continued …

Thailand’s Growing Obesity Epidemic

Over the past two decades, the obesity rate among school children has tripled, rising from 5.8% to 15%. The situation is equally concerning among adults, with 42% being categorized as obese by 2020.

These statistics are not just numbers; they represent a plethora of risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, hypertension, and stroke, which claim 400,000 lives annually and account for 74% of all deaths in Thailand. The economic impact is also significant, with the cost of overweight and obesity estimated at 281 billion baht annually, roughly 1.5% of Thailand’s GDP in 2019. Continued …

Thailand Anticipates Tourist Surge from China in May

As Thailand eyes a potential upswing in tourist arrivals from China this coming May, hopes hinge on the five-day Labor Day holiday. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is cautiously optimistic, despite a noticeable dip in Chinese visitors earlier this year, attributed to lingering economic woes and safety concerns.

Foreign tourists to pay more as Japan rolls out dual-pricing system

Thais heading to Japan should prepare for potentially spending more, as the country is set to introduce a “two-tier” pricing system at major tourist attractions from July. The policy will set different rates for Japanese citizens and foreign visitors in a bid to tackle over-tourism, while generating additional revenue.

Japan, which has set a target of 60 million foreign tourists annually by 2030, has seen record-breaking visitor numbers, particularly from China and South Korea. The weak yen has further fueled tourism, with 36.86 million international arrivals recorded last year, surpassing Thailand’s 35 million for the first time. Continued …

While many revel in the high-energy water fights and street parties, others find the constant soaking, overcrowded streets, and general mayhem overwhelming.

Roads become impassable due to water battles, and even those who simply want to walk or commute risk getting drenched at any moment. For expats who live and work in the city, this can be a significant inconvenience. Continued …

Political tensions weigh on Thai stocks and casino plans

Rising political tensions could be a drag on major government projects, particularly the proposed entertainment and casino complex, says the Thai unit of China Galaxy Securities (CGS), prompting the brokerage to lower its Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index target for 2025.

Thailand could also face reciprocal tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. According to the Bank of Thailand, the U.S. is the biggest market for Thai exports, comprising 18% of total exports last year, up from 13% in 2019. The country’s trade surplus with the U.S. surged from 2.5% in 2019 to 6.6% of GDP in 2024, a record high for Thailand. Continued …

High Airfares in Thailand Set to Stay as Demand Stays High

Travelers in Thailand can expect air ticket prices to remain elevated this year, despite hopes for more affordable travel. Key factors among major airlines — including airport fees, ground handling charges, and an ongoing supply chain disruption — are driving a steady or slightly increasing airfare trend.

The airline reports that costs tied to airport operations and strong public demand for travel are impacting ticket pricing. Thai AirAsia’s fares could potentially increase by up to 10% this year. Thai Airways Bans Power Bank Charging on Flights from March 1

In response to a recent fire incident aboard a Korean Air flight, airlines worldwide, including Thai Airways, are prohibiting the usage and charging of power banks during flights starting March 1. This decision follows an explosion linked to a faulty power bank that sparked significant safety concerns.

Leading the charge, South Korean airlines — such as Korean Air and Asiana Airlines — have enacted stringent guidelines. While passengers may still carry power banks onboard in their hand luggage, any mid-flight charging or usage is strictly forbidden. These devices, typically powered by lithium-ion batteries, pose a severe fire hazard if mishandled, particularly due to air pressure shifts causing thermal reactions during flights. Continued …

Thailand Grapples with Escalating Challenges in Law Enforcement

Growing concerns over Thailand becoming a “failed state” stem from weak law enforcement, allowing cross-border crimes to thrive. This lack of effective governance has created an environment where illicit activities such as human trafficking, drug smuggling, and illegal wildlife trade flourish unchecked.

Experts warn that the erosion of public trust in institutions and the judiciary further exacerbates the problem, making it increasingly difficult to restore order and stability. If left unaddressed, these systemic issues could undermine both Thailand’s domestic security and its standing on the international stage. Continued …

Thai farmers urged to grow bananas instead of rice

The government is urging beleaguered Thai farmers to pivot to bananas from rice as a strategy to bolster their earnings amid plummeting rice prices. Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan dropped the idea while addressing People’s Party MP Narongdech Ularnkul’s concerns about rice price stabilization.

“A rice oversupply is crushing prices, and bananas could be the alternative farmers need. With high yields and soaring demand in international markets like Japan, where the appetite for bananas tops one million tons annually, it’s a no-brainer for those wanting to cash in,” he said. Continued …
