Bangkok Tower Collapse: Watchdog Warned of Substandard Steel

Test shows larger steel bars at collapsed building are substandard

A six-hour test of 28 steel samples collected from the rubble of the State Audit Building that collapsed during last Friday’s earthquake centered at Mandalay, Myanmar, shows that the larger pieces were substandard.

The samples were collected by a team from the Industry Ministry with the Iron and Steel Institute of Thailand using chemical and mechanical values to test the seven types of steel samples, with the small pieces being flattened before ascertaining their chemical values. Aid rushes into Myanmar as earthquake’s death toll continues to rise

Emergency aid has streamed into Southeast Asia in the two days since a massive earthquake struck Myanmar and Thailand. Relief efforts are focused on Myanmar, where the estimated death toll rose to 1,644 by Sunday. The number of dead from Friday’s 7.7 magnitude quake is expected to increase.  The number of injured was 3,408, while the estimated number of missing rose to 139 on Sunday.

While food, medicine and other vital supplies have reached Myanmar, a report issued Saturday by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said rescue efforts have been hampered by a severe shortage of medical supplies, including trauma kits, blood bags, anesthetics, assistive devices, essential medicine, and tents to house health workers. Earthquake update: 18 dead, 78 still missing

The deadly tremor in Myanmar has left its mark on Thailand, claiming at least 18 lives, with 78 missing as of Sunday. The powerful earthquake wreaked havoc in Bangkok, particularly in Chatuchak, where 10 lives were lost at the State Audit Office building collapse.

Lantao is on the road to recovery. The little long-tailed macaque had an open fracture in her right arm and was severely traumatized when found on the Thai island of Ko Lanta. At the time of her rescue, the baby monkey was blind in one eye and also severely malnourished.

PM2.5 levels exceed safety standard in all of Bangkok

The air quality in all 50 districts of Bangkok was categorized as “orange”, or starting to affect health, this morning, the Air Quality Information Center of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said.

The center reported the average PM2.5 levels throughout the city at 51.2 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), in excess of the country’s standard of 37.5 µg/m³ over a three-hour average (5am to 7am). Continued …

Areas in two Chiang Mai districts where wildfires have been burning for the past two weeks have been declared disaster zones, as local authorities battle to bring the fires under control.

Chiang Mai Gov. Thailand’s annual crop-burning season causes air pollution lethal enough to prematurely kill 34,000 people every year but the solution lies in another agricultural element: plants. Specifically, plant-based proteins. Agricultural burning is the biggest source of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the country, which is one of the main air pollutants. 36 tourists injured, three critically, as tour bus rams utility pole

Thirty-six tourists, both Thai and foreign, were injured when the driver of the tour bus in which they were traveling lost control and slammed into a utility pole in Phetchaburi province, breaking it in half. The accident was reported at around 4am this morning on Phetkasem Road (inbound) in Khao Yoi district of the southern province.

A recent survey by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) reveals widespread dissatisfaction among Thais regarding the government’s and Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s performance. Conducted late last month, the poll sampled 1,310 people nationwide.

Most Thais deported from Cambodia took jobs in scam centers for high pay

Most of the 119 Thais deported from Cambodia recently are believed to have gone there illegally, to work for scam centers in the Poipet border town. Seven of them are wanted by Thai police, according to the Cybercrime Investigation Bureau (CIB).

All the repatriated Thais had their cell phones seized upon their return to Aranyaprathet district in Sa Kaeo province, which is just across the border from Poipet, suggesting that they were not trafficked to work in the scam centers, but were lured by the attractive remuneration. Continued …

How Often Do Thais Use E-hailing In A Week

E-hailing services are becoming increasingly popular among Thais, with more people relying on them for daily commutes and errands. As urban mobility evolves, Maxim’s analytics team examined user habits in 2024, revealing key insights into ride frequency, preferred services, and spending patterns.

According to the data, 49% of active users book rides twice a week, while 39% use the service once a week. Meanwhile, 10% book between three to six rides weekly, and a small but dedicated 1% use Maxim more than seven times a week. Most rides originate from public spaces, transportation hubs, and workplaces, heading toward residential areas. Regular users often commute across various parts of the city.

Among service options, the car service is used for 53% of rides, making it the most popular. Motorbikes make up 41% of trips because their speed and flexibility make them suited for short journeys in cities. While the remaining 5% consists of other services.

According to the data, 59% spend up to Bt50 per week, 36% spend up to Bt250, and only 13% exceed that amount. On average, users spend approximately Bt108 per week.

PKK man murders estranged wife

A 60-year-old man has been arrested after stabbing his estranged wife 11 times, fatally wounding her in their home in Prachuap Khiri Khan. Their son has spoken out, revealing that his father was deeply addicted to gambling.

The attack took place at around 5:30 am Tuesday in Ban Na Thong, Khlong Wan subdistrict, Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan. The suspect, identified as Sumpan Siangsai, used a newly purchased 50-centimeter knife to stab his wife, 53-year-old Sangwan Sualek, in the torso, with multiple wounds penetrating her heart and lungs. Thai nominee crackdown uncovers tourism, property chaos

Authorities have announced progress in a crackdown on foreigners using Thai nominees to illegally run businesses, focusing on tourism and real estate. Council of State Rejects Plan to Lower Electricity Bills

The Council of State, Thailand’s primary legal advisory body, has dismissed a proposal from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) aimed at renegotiating contracts with renewable power firms to reduce electricity bills. Easing Thailand’s existing restrictions on afternoon alcohol sales could inject an additional 50-100 billion baht into the economy, predominantly through increased spending by foreign tourists, experts in the industry suggest.

Recent findings hint that so-called “high-quality” tourists are prepared to pay an extra $250 (approximately 8,400 baht) daily for premium food and beverage experiences. Cabinet Set to Reject Casino Entry Rule for Thai Nationals

Thai Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has indicated that a contentious proposal regulating casino entry for Thai citizens is unlikely to win cabinet approval. The policy, suggested by the Council of State (CoS), requires Thais to maintain a minimum of 50 million baht (approximately US$ 1.5 million) in fixed deposits for at least six months to gain entry to casino entertainment complexes.

Amid Climate Uncertainty, Floating Solar Builds Resilience

Southeast Asia is responsible for nearly a quarter of global energy demand growth through 2035, but it is currently heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels and hydropower. Given recent volatility in both fossil fuel prices and increasing severity and regularity of heatwaves and droughts, which make hydropower less reliable, diversification into domestically located renewable energy sources like solar will have energy security benefits.

This is particularly true for countries like Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, which have significant existing hydropower in their power supply and also significant untapped solar potential.
