220-pound catfish rescued after getting stuck inside flooded train station

Rescuers had the ultimate catch-and-release experience after saving a monster Mekong River catfish that became trapped inside a flooded train station in Thailand. “It was one of the biggest I have seen,” Boonsong Tangrid said of the dramatic rescue, which occurred in Chiang Mai.

Student Bus Crashes into Pig Truck, 31 Injured in Nakhon Pathom

A student bus from Srinakharinwirot University, returning from a field trip, was involved in a collision, crashing into a 12-wheeled truck carrying pigs, leaving 31 students injured. There were two buses in a convoy returning from the trip to Suan Phueng, Ratchaburi Province, but only one involved in the crash.

Nationwide Alcohol Sales Ban Set Thursday as Thailand Marks End of Buddhist Lent

The end of Buddhist Lent, Awk Phansa, will take place on Thursday, and a nationwide sales ban on alcohol will be enforced for 24 hours.

Weather warning for heavy rain in 40 provinces

Thailand’s Meteorological Department issued another serious weather warning for 40 provinces, urging residents, especially in Bangkok, its surrounding areas, the southern region, and the eastern region, to prepare for heavy rainfall affecting up to 70% of these regions.

In the southern region, the eastern coast will experience thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with some areas getting heavy rain. Provinces affected include Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. The temperatures will be between 23-25°C at the lowest and 30-34°C at the highest. New cap for private hospital claims

The Social Security Office (SSO) will have to reimburse hospitals contracted to provide healthcare under the social security system a fixed rate of 12,000 baht per patient per year in case of high-cost treatments, the government says.

Bt23 billion parliament complex has some problems

Last week, officials at Thailand’s parliament called in a former Bangkok MP to witness ongoing problems that staff and engineers at the building are dealing with. The former MP was told of ongoing issues with toilet water flooding part of the building. Three people perished in flood-related incidents in Nakhon Si Thammarat and Yala yesterday as the southern border region braces for more rain, potential flash floods, and forest runoff.

Mun River overflows, flooding farms, low-lying areas in Phimai

The Mun River burst its banks on Saturday morning, sending a huge volume of water to flood paddy fields and low-lying areas in Phimai district of Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Water levels in the river were high in several locations, particularly upstream areas of Phimai Dam.

As the dam exceeded its holding capacity by 3. 6 million cubic meters, irrigation officials at the Thung Samrit water operation and maintenance project had to open all six sluice gates, allowing water to flow downstream into the Mun River and protecting economic areas from flooding. Continued …

Mae Sai Flood Recovery Underway, River Safety Measures Enforced

The Flood, Storm, and Landslide Disaster Relief Operations Center has provided an update on recovery efforts in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai province, where flash floods and mudslides have caused significant damage.

Jirayu Huangsap, spokesperson for the center, reported that multiple agencies are working to clear mud and debris from homes and businesses, with the Ministry of Labor employing 400 workers to assist in the cleanup across affected communities. Flooding ravages Chiang Mai district known for elephant parks

Apple stuck her trunk out of the swollen river like a snorkel, paddling desperately to stay afloat. But the 2-ton, 15-year-old elephant was no match for the flooding that inundated the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai last week. By the time a team of rescuers saw her, she had been swept more than a mile downriver.

“It was heartbreaking to see an animal so strong struggling to stay afloat,” said Pasit Insamran, one of the rescuers, describing the incident Friday. “We kept shouting at her, hoping she would follow the sound and have the strength to swim closer to the shore so we could rescue her.” Continued …

Suitability index for buying property and a new car continues to fall

The Center for Economic and Business Forecasting at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) has reported that the suitability index of purchasing a new car in September 2024 declined for the seventh consecutive month, reaching its lowest point since March 2023. The index for September 2024 was recorded at 67.0, down from 70.2 in August.

UAE firm EDGNEX to invest $1 billion in data center projects in Thailand

Dubai-based global digital infrastructure company EDGNEX Data Centers by DAMAC has announced a joint venture with PROEN Crop, a leading Thailand technology provider, to invest US$1 billion (32 billion baht) in several data center projects in the kingdom.

With a 70% stake in the joint venture, EDGNEX will lead the operation in data services to fulfill increasing needs in AI technology and data processing in the Southeast Asian region, DAMAC founder Hussain Sajwani said. Continued …

Thailand’s foreign tourism is struggling against a negative turn of sentiment in the third quarter, up to the end of September. Data from an industry survey showed performance declined not only from the second quarter but also against the same period in 2023.

Chiang Mai’s Ping River recedes, but downstream areas still at risk

Chiang Mai authorities announced that the Ping River, which had broken its banks and flooded the province earlier, has dropped to 3.85 meters, though downstream areas were still at risk of flooding. Muang Chiang Mai Municipality announced that the river’s level at the P1 measuring station by the Nawarat Bridge stood at 3.85 meters as of 10am on Monday.

Hotel occupancy rate in Chiang Mai down 30%

Hotels in Chiang Mai saw the average occupancy rate decline by 30% over a three-day period of severe floods covering Oct. 4-6, which heavily impacted 1,500-2,000 rooms in the province.

Headline inflation quickens in September

Thailand’s annual headline inflation quickened in September due mainly to higher prices of diesel and some vegetables, the Commerce Ministry said on Monday, and was still below the central bank’s target range of 1% to 3%.

The headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.61% in September from a year earlier, after August’s annual increase of 0.35%, and missed a forecast rise of 0.80% in a Reuters poll. Continued …

Thailand’s casino bill faces overhaul

The Fiscal Policy Office has completed public hearings on the entertainment complex bill and will submit its results to the Cabinet soon, a well-informed source said.

The source explained that the FPO has categorized the results of the hearing into 45 main points, which it will ask the Cabinet to consider and select for improving the draft. TAT seeks 10 million arrivals in final quarter

Corruption scandal: Thailand’s bus industry whistleblows dirty dealings

A shocking revelation has swept through the coach bus industry of Thailand, as several anonymous companies have blown the whistle on rampant corruption within the Land Transport Department‘s vehicle-inspection process. A bribe of 3,000 to 4,000 baht is all it takes to fast-track an inspection, the reports say.

This practice was put under the spotlight following the recent bus blaze tragedy that claimed the lives of 23 children and teachers. The vehicle involved was discovered to have illegally installed gas tanks. Out of 10 NGV gas tanks on the coach, only six were there legitimately. Continued …

Land Transport Department puts five parties on notice over deadly bus inferno

The Department of Land Transport (DLT) plans to pursue legal actions against five parties over the deadly tour bus blaze that killed 23 people on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road in Pathum Thani province on Tuesday.

Airlines serving Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport on Thursday canceled all flights for the rest of the day because of severe flooding in the northern province.

Thousands of animals trapped at badly-flooded Elephant Nature Park

More than 5,000 large animals are trapped in the heavily flooded Elephant Nature Park at Chiang Mai’s Mae Taeng district since 4 p.m. Wednesday, with torrential rain and fast-flowing floodwaters preventing officials from entering the area.

Elephants and other sick animals evacuated from flooded shelter

National park officials, boats and FWD trucks are rushing to an elephant conservation center in Mae Taeng district of Chiang Mai to evacuate about 100 elephants and hundreds of other animals, as floodwater reaches two meters and is still rising.

Isan area benefits from cash handout

Of the top five provinces in the country that received the most money in the first phase of the government’s cash handout, tota ling 145 billion baht, four are located in the northeast. Nakhon Ratchasima province had the most beneficiaries in the nation, said Pornchai Thiraveja, director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office.

The first phase of cash distribution used the Pao Tang app, rather than through a digital wallet as originally proposed by the Pheu Thai Party. Thailand will introduce electronic travel authorization for business travelers from Dec 1

From Dec. 1, business travelers traveling to Thailand will be required to present an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This regulation affects travelers from a total of 93 countries, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland, who were previously exempt from the visa requirement.

The ETA is intended to simplify entry processes and improve the tracking of foreign visitors. The approved ETA allows a single entry for up to 60 days, which can be extended by 30 days. 13 million speed pills seized in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Highway police seized over 13 million methamphetamine pills and arrested two couriers in Bang Saphan district of Prachuap Khiri Khan on Monday.

The discovery was made when officers stopped a 22-wheel trailer truck with a Songkhla license plate at a checkpoint at kilometer marker 378 of Phetkasem Road, police said at a briefing in Bangkok on Tuesday. Continued …

Death toll in bus blaze tragedy rises to 22 students, 3 teachers

The death toll from a devastating bus blaze tragedy on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road in Pathum Thani province near Bangkok has soared to 25. Among the victims were 22 young students and three teachers.

According to a grim update, the ill-fated coach was packed with 44 students, aged between three and nine, along with their teachers from Wat Khao Phraya Sangkharam School in Uthai Thani. Thailand needs to revamp its rules for school bus operations

As details emerge of the gruesome school bus fire yesterday that claimed the lives of 22 young children and three teachers, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Transport need to start to ponder on the revamping the rules governing use of vehicles used for transporting children.

In the early afternoon incident yesterday, the three teachers in the back were unable to open the emergency exit’doors and were reportedly covering the students when their charred bodies were found by the forensic team. Water levels in Phitsanulok rise as Yom River receives upstream runoff

The flooding in Phitsanulok province, particularly in the Bang Rakam Model area, is being impacted by the overflow from the Yom River basin, which is flooding both the old and main channels of the Yom River. The affected areas include Phrom Phiram, Mueang and Bang Rakam districts.

The Bang Rakam flood retention field, part of the project to manage floodwaters after the harvest season, has now exceeded its capacity, holding 440 million cubic meters of water (110%). Python pops into Pattaya mall

A bustling Pattaya City mall turned into a scene of chaos when a nearly 3-meter- long python made an unexpected appearance. Airbnb reports 30% surge in Thailand bookings

Scientists Unveil Countdown To Save Oceans From Plastic Pollution

A report published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin by researchers from Japan’s Kyushu University has, for the first time, established a clear numerical target for addressing global marine plastic pollution. Through their mapping of plastic waste movement and its impacts on the oceans, the team determined that a minimum 32% reduction in plastic littering is required by 2035 to avert further harm to marine environments.

Marine plastic pollution has been a growing issue for the world, and unless considerable interventions are placed the situation will only get worse. For several years, Prof. Atsuhiko Isobe from Kyushu University’s Research Institute for Applied Mechanics has been working to monitor and track plastic pollution in the ocean. Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has assured the public that despite this year’s rainfall and floodwaters being on par with 2011’s catastrophic floods, a disaster of similar scale is not anticipated. Speaking yesterday, Anutin noted that although Thailand is also impacted by water released from neighboring countries, manageable measures are being undertaken to mitigate potential flooding impacts.

Chiang Mai City: Floods Expected to Surpass 2011 Levels

The flooding in Chiang Mai continues to worsen as the Ping River reaches record-breaking levels. As of 9pm last night, the water level in the city of Chiang Mai had risen to 4.83 meters, surpassing the 2022 flood level. Authorities expect the level to climb above 5.10 meters, exceeding the 2011 flood levels.

Reports from Chiang Mai indicate that the situation remains critical, as new floodwaters from Mae Taeng District have reached the city. The flooding has expanded, inundating major economic areas such as the Night Bazaar, San Pa Khoi Market, and parts of the Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road, with water depths ranging from 50 to 100 cm. More areas in the northern provinces of Lampang and Sukhothai are now flooded. Residents have been moving their belongings to higher ground and are avoiding flooded routes as advised.

The severe flooding that has gripped much of northern and northeastern Thailand is taking a heavy toll on the country’s economy, with the Thai Chamber of Commerce estimating damages at over 242 billion baht.

The flooding, exacerbated by the El Niño and La Niña weather patterns, has disrupted agriculture, fisheries, livestock, and business sectors across the affected regions. First phase of 10,000-baht disbursement started

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra presided over the handing out of 10,000-baht to the first group of recipients on Wednesday morning and pledged to hold the second and third phases soon. In a ceremony held at the Government House, Paetongtarn pressed a mock button to gesture the start of the remittance of the economic stimulus money to the first group of recipients.

Playful rain, cheerful mist at Ban E-Tong

As soon as we arrived at Ban E-Tong, a small village in Kanchanaburi province, in the late afternoon, everyone found themselves in a kingdom engulfed by mist. The familiar scenes were almost entirely swallowed up. We willingly stepped out of the car, humbly embracing the clarity of the season.

The journey, more than 300 kilometers from Bangkok, felt longer. Although the M81 motorway has begun trial service, significantly reducing travel time, once we reached Thong Pha Phum district, we still had to drive another 70km up the mountain to Ban E-Tong. B.Grimm Power Public Co. (B.Grimm Power) has signed 25-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) through its subsidiaries and joint ventures. The agreements cover eight companies and represent a combined total contracted capacity of 323.3 megawatts (MW) for solar farm projects.

Mechanic Crushed to Death by Truck in Cha Am

An incident claimed the life of a 28-year-old truck mechanic yesterday while he was repairing the undercarriage of a 10-wheeler truck. The incident occurred at a truck repair shop along the Cha Am-Pranburi bypass, heading toward Bangkok.

According to police reports, the mechanic had finished replacing parts under the truck and was preparing to reattach the rear wheels. Soulik downgraded to depression, to bring heavy rain

Tropical storm Soulik over Khammouane province in Lao PDR weakened into a tropical depression in the early hours of Friday, but is still forecast to bring isolated heavy rains to several parts of Thailand.

In a weather warning issued on Friday, the Thai Meteorological Department said the storm was centered about 100 km northeast of Nakhon Phanom province, with sustained winds about 55 kilometers per hour. You Don’t Know Moo Deng

If you’ve been on the internet in the past two weeks, you have likely seen a video of a miniature hippopotamus gallivanting in the puddles of a Thailand zoo. Her name is Moo Deng, she is two months old, and she has built quite a reputation for her surly attitude. She has taken big, toothless chomps out of the legs of attending zookeepers, unhinged her jaw to appear as if she is screaming in either joy or existential horror, and done a lot of sleeping in between.

But what you might not be aware of is that Moo Deng is a pygmy hippo, a species that is exceptionally rare. Physiologically, pygmy hippos are significantly smaller than their cousins, and it is estimated that only 3,000 exist in the wilds of West Africa. Thai auto industry expects impact of Fed rate cut in 2-3 months

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI)’s Automotive Industry Club said the U.S. Federal Reserve’s reduction of its key interest rate by an unusually large half a percentage point would start impacting the Thai auto industry in the next 2-3 months.

Household debt NPLs jump 2.8% in one month and rising

Thailand’s household non-performing loans (NPLs) increased 2.8%, from 1.16 trillion baht in June to 1.19 trillion baht in July, and will rise to 1.2 trillion baht in the foreseeable future, said Surapol Opasatien, CEO of the National Credit Bureau.

He said that although total household debt in June and July remained unchanged at about 13.6 trillion baht the NPLs for July increased to 1.19 trillion baht, accounting for 8.76% of all household debt. Continued …

Global solar power adoption surges, Thailand up 18%

The world is on track to add 593 gigawatts of solar power in 2024, a jump of 29% year on year, London-based energy analysis company Ember noted in its latest report published on Thursday. The report said that thanks to declining costs, installations of solar panels maintained strong growth even after an estimated 87% surge in 2023. In 2024, an estimated 292 GW of solar capacity had been installed by the end of July, it added.

Ember’s report said the combined additions of China, the U.S., India, Germany and Brazil are on track to make up 75% of global solar additions in 2024. Meanwhile, Kasikorn Research Center reported that solar panel installations in Thailand grew at an average rate of 17.9% year on year. Continued …

Microplastics found in Thai coral skeletons

Researchers from Japan and Thailand investigating microplastics in coral have found that all three parts of the coral anatomy – surface mucus, tissue, and skeleton – contain microplastics. The findings were made possible thanks to a new microplastic detection technique developed by the team and applied to coral for the first time.

These findings may also explain the “missing plastic problem” that has puzzled scientists, where about 70% of the plastic litter that has entered the oceans cannot be found. The team hypothesizes that coral may be acting as a “sink” for microplastics by absorbing it from the oceans. Continued …

Thailand’s ‘green’ investment tops 938 billion baht since 2019

Thailand’s transition to a green economy has accelerated rapidly since 2019, with promotional privileges granted to some 6,183 projects worth a combined 938.06 billion baht, the Board of Investment (BOI) said. Green investments cover BCG (bio, circular, green) industries, electric vehicles (EVs), clean energy generation, and transition from fossil fuels to renewables.

In the first six months of 2024, the BOI approved privileges for 448 projects in BCG industries with a combined investment value of 118.16 billion baht, and 25 EV projects worth 6.26 billion baht, BOI Secretary-general Narit Therdsteerasukdi said. Continued …

Mae Sai district’s most famous cave, Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non, is currently facing its worst flooding in 13 years, after the mountain range was lashed by torrential rain, measured at 263mm yesterday alone.

Manpower, equipment and relief supplies from various sources have been arriving in Chiang Rai province to help flood victims, many of whom remain stranded in their homes by the worst flooding for three decades.

Runoff water from a mountain range in Myanmar’ Shan state and from watershed areas is yet to reach the Sai and Ruak rivers. Satellite images, provided by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), show 767 hectares on the Myanmar border under water, while nearly a thousand hectares in Mae Sai district are flooded. Thailand is seeing increasing cases of diseases caused by flooding, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) said on Wednesday, urging the public to avoid wading through floodwater and mud.
