Speaking yesterday, Anutin noted that although Thailand is also impacted by water released from neighboring countries, manageable measures are being undertaken to mitigate potential flooding impacts.

Residents in flood-prone areas, such as Bangkok, have been reassured that the devastating floods of 2011, which saw parts of the capital severely inundated and numerous roads turning into canals, are unlikely to recur. The 2011 floods remain the most damaging in Thailand’s history. Continued …

You Don’t Know Moo Deng

If you’ve been on the internet in the past two weeks, you have likely seen a video of a miniature hippopotamus gallivanting in the puddles of a Thailand zoo. But what you might not be aware of is that Moo Deng is a pygmy hippo, a species that is exceptionally rare. Physiologically, pygmy hippos are significantly smaller than their cousins, and it is estimated that only 3,000 exist in the wilds of West Africa. Beyond her adorable face and winning demeanor, Moo Deng’s existence alone is a major story in conservation circles. Continued …

Microplastics found in Thai coral skeletons

Researchers from Japan and Thailand investigating microplastics in coral have found that all three parts of the coral anatomy – surface mucus, tissue, and skeleton – contain microplastics. The findings were made possible thanks to a new microplastic detection technique developed by the team and applied to coral for the first time.

These findings may also explain the “missing plastic problem” that has puzzled scientists, where about 70% of the plastic litter that has entered the oceans cannot be found. The team hypothesizes that coral may be acting as a “sink” for microplastics by absorbing it from the oceans. Continued …

Re: Thailand’s air pollution problem

“Serious actions against burning garbage could lead to a quick and effective improvement of air quality but it seems authorities are not much interested.” – RB

Expat News: If only it were that simple. First, most of the air pollution is caused by agricultural burning, not garbage burning. Second, much of the air pollution from burning is coming from neighboring countries and most is from agriculture. Third, unless somehow Thai farmers are provided with modern farming equipment, which they cannot afford and which will cause the price of their products to escalate, they will continue to do what they have done for centuries.

This is particularly important for expat retirees, as foreigners do not qualify for Thailand’s public health insurance scheme. Continued …

Following the waste that’s choking the Chao Phraya

Political turmoil threatens baht resurgence

The Thai baht’s recent rally is under threat as markets digest the nation’s latest political drama ahead of this week’s central bank policy meeting.

The baht has been one of the region’s top performing currencies since the start of July – aided partly by a rebound in tourism – after hitting a near two-year low against the dollar in May. The resurgence may be derailed however, following a tumultuous period that included Paetongtarn Shinawatra winning a parliamentary vote to become the new prime minister, while a court ousted her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin. The US dollar is a problem for everyone

In 1971, U.S. Treasury Secretary John Connally famously told his counterparts in the G10 that “the dollar is our currency, but it’s your problem”. Connally was being unexpectedly candid about the fact that, even though the greenback was the world’s main reserve currency, its foremost purpose was to advance U.S. interests.

That remains true today. But in recent decades, the dollar’s central role in global trade and finance has posed more of a problem for emerging-market and developing economies than for the world’s rich countries. Continued …

The Thais have a few things over us

A week on Thailand’s Koh Samui and Koh Phangan islands provided a great escape from a cold and sometimes wet winter without having to stress about the lawn getting out of control, as well as a complete break from New Zealand’s eternal debates in the media about everything that’s wrong in this country.

I hadn’t realised just how depressing exposure to politicians indulging in puerile arguments and constant whining on radio, TV and in the papers can be. So it was good to have warm weather, sun, beach and pool, to be able to avoid TV and to be exposed to a country where the people genuinely appear to be happy. Continued …

Move Forward Party dissolved, leaders banned for 10 years

The Constitutional Court of Thailand has announced a verdict to dissolve the Move Forward Party (MFP) over their efforts to reform the lese majeste law, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Law, and ban the managing executives of the party for 10 years.

In April, the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) requested that the Constitutional Court consider dissolving the MFP due to its promotion of the reformation of Section 112 during last year’s general election. The ECT argued that these reforms posed a threat to both the monarchy and the democratic form of government with the king as head of state. Continued …

New Day for Thailand After Court Dissolved Move Forward Party

In the end, the Constitutional Court today acted out of fear, citing eventual concerns that the monarchy institution will be eventually abolished if the main opposition Move Forward was allowed to continue to exist and charismatic former leader Pita Limjaroenrat allowed to hold political office. Thus, the party was dissolved and Pita along with about 10 others, including current party leader Chaithawat Tulathon, were banned from political office for 10 years.

This leads to the question as to whether Thailand can still call itself a democracy when disenfranchising 14 million voters, or the biggest winner in the May 2014 general election, means little or nothing as long as voters want to see the monarchy institution reformed instead of being treated like a semi-divine institution from the Middle Ages in Europe. US and EU express concern over the demise of Thailand’s Move Forward party

The United States and the European Union voiced strong concerns on Wednesday following the Constitutional Court of Thailand’s decision to dissolve the opposition party, Move Forward. The verdict raises alarm about the country’s democratic trajectory, especially considering Move Forward’s significant electoral support.

In a statement, the U.S. State Department highlighted the potential threat to Thailand’s democratic progress. “This decision jeopardizes Thailand’s democratic progress and runs counter to the aspirations of the Thai people for a strong, democratic future,” said spokesperson Matthew Miller. The department emphasized that the ruling disenfranchises over 14 million voters who supported Move Forward in the May 2023 elections. Continued …

Call for new tariffs on Chinese goods

The influx of Chinese industrial products into Southeast Asia is dealing a blow to Thailand’s trade, reducing its market share in the region and leading to a trade deficit with China worth nearly US$20 billion, says the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB).

The entry of Chinese online retailer Temu into Thailand is expected to worsen the situation, causing the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), a key member of JSCCIB, to call on the government to impose more tariffs on some imported products. Continued …
