Beneath the surface, however, lies a tale of hope, greed, and hard truths affecting everyday investors. Foremost, the adage “There’s no such thing as a free lunch” rings true. Fast riches rarely come without cost, as victims of the iCon scheme discovered. iCON Group scandal points to deeper problems in various Thai sectors

The allegations against The iCON Group, a direct-selling business led by “Boss Paul” Waratphol Waratvorakul, reveal increasingly deep connections to various sectors. The situation then extends to the political sphere, with an audio clip surfacing of a politician asking for bribes and promising the support of “divine forces” (big-name politicians) to protect the group. Simultaneously, questions have been raised about the “civil servants and government agencies” involved, corruption and abuse of power to benefit risky business operations. Continued …

Ekkapop Luengprasert, an adviser to the Interior minister said that, “An unusual money trail – over US$247,911,936, worth more than 8,223 million baht, was transferred out just an hour before ‘Coach Lab’ of The iCon was arrested.” Continued …

Court denies bail for 17 iCon executives

Creating a ‘Goldilocks’ business climate for all

Whenever the odds seem stacked against human progress – when economic growth looks set to remain feeble, when too many countries appear destined to grow old before they become rich, when climate change seems out of control – it is worth remembering the distinctive virtue of our species. Human ingenuity is the reason why predictions of global doom, which have proliferated throughout our history, have never materialized.

It was ingenuity that defused the so-called “population bomb”, the 1970s threat that “hundreds of millions of people” would starve to death as rapid population growth exhausted finite supplies of food. Instead, agricultural innovations such as high-yield, pest-resistant crops caused global food production to grow faster than the population in nearly every part of the world. Continued …

How is Thailand Investing in Climate and Nature for Resilience?

Recently, the private sector has raised $45 billion annually to support climate initiatives, while 73 public and partially public climate funds are now in place. The World Bank has called for a leap from billions to trillions of dollars in investment to truly make a difference.

Thailand’s major strengths of 4 decades ago have been eroded by high costs, outdated rules

Addressing the challenges facing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) today, Kriengkrai Thiennukul, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), noted that over the past 40 years Thailand’s strengths have been first, a large workforce, second, cheap labor, third, low-cost land, and fourth, a strategic location as a regional investment hub.

He further explained that Thailand’s industrial structure remains heavily reliant on labor-intensive original equipment manufacturing (OEM), with electricity costs nearly double those of regional competitors. The link between climate and talk of ‘remigration’

‘Remigration”: the word had a harmless origin, as a term academics used to describe the phenomenon of migrants who failed to thrive in their new home and decided to go back to their birth country.

Then, about 10 years ago, French nationalists and racists started using it to mean forcible repatriation of legal immigrants. However, it didn’t catch on beyond the narrow circle of conspiracy theorists who subscribed to the “great replacement” myth (the paranoid belief that there is a systematic plot to replace white people with non-white immigrants). Dammed in the Mekong: Averting an Environmental Catastrophe

Environmental degradation caused by infrastructure development in the Mekong basin, especially large-scale hydropower and sand mining, threatens the region’s ecological balance and the livelihoods of 70 million people. None of the Mekong basin states – China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam – has achieved a satisfactory balance between the imperatives of economic growth and environmental preservation, while climate change has resulted in higher temperatures and severe droughts, exacerbating the harmful effects of new infrastructure. Plastic waste will surpass marine life by 2050

Plastic pollution has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century. Its pervasive presence, from the depths of the oceans to the peaks of the highest mountains, reminds humanity’s unchecked consumption of single-use plastics and the inadequate systems in place to manage plastic waste.

Globally, an estimated 400 million tons of plastic are produced every year, and roughly half of this is for single-use items such as packaging, bottles and bags. Alarmingly, over 8 million metric tons of plastic end up in oceans annually, according to the United Nations. This accumulation of plastic in the environment has devastating effects on marine ecosystems. Continued …
