Chiang Mai not declared a disaster zone in bow to tourism

The government of Thailand has chosen not to declare Chiang Mai a disaster zone despite escalating air pollution, according to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. The decision was largely influenced by concerns that such a declaration could negatively impact the province’s tourism industry.

Hazardous smog cloaks 50 provinces

Fifty provinces were blanketed with hazardous levels of PM2.5 dust this morning and 13 of them, mainly in the north, with seriously harmful levels of pollution.

The worst reading was in Mae Hong Son and the cleanest air was in Phuket. The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency reported that the highest level of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) was detected in the northern province of Mae Hong Son, at 159.1 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Rocky start for Thailand’s latest alcohol tax reform

Thailand has decided to cut its prohibitive alcohol taxes. The tax changes were announced earlier this year, and took effect from March 1. The cabinet proposed an alcohol tax slash at three levels.

First, the import duties of 54% will be reduced to 0%. Second, the excise tax will drop from 10% to 5%. Another excise tax, which applies to the volume and percentage of alcohol and calculated at 1,500 baht (£32.84) per liter for every 100 degrees of alcohol content, will now come down to 1,000 baht. Chiang Mai’s atmosphere the world’s most polluted today

Chiang Mai is top of the world’s 10 cities with the highest levels of air pollution, according to the Air Quality Index (AQI) readings today.

According to the IQAir website, the AQI reading in Chiang Mai is 200, followed by Tashkent in Uzbekistan at 193, 154 in Lahore in Pakistan, 160 in Beijing, 157 in Wuhan, 155 in Yangon, 154 in New Delhi, 154 in Dubai, 153 in Hang Zhou and 151 in Calcutta. Continued …

Thousands more chemicals in plastic than previously thought

At least 3,000 more chemicals are present in plastics — from food packaging to children’s toys to medical devices — than previously estimated by international environment agencies, a report published on Thursday found.

Temperatures set to soar in Hua Hin this week and next

Temperatures in Hua Hin and across Thailand are set to soar over the next week. The Thai Meteorological Department’s seven-day forecast for Hua Hin says maximum temperatures will range from 36–38 °C, with average temperatures between March 6-12 reaching 35°C.

However, forecasters say the temperatures may actually feel much warmer. According to the heat index, average temperatures will feel like 42 °C. Continued …

More than 10 million Thais sought treatment for illnesses linked to air pollution in 2023, authorities said.

The data from the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) come as Thailand’s air quality is worsening. The Immigration Bureau revoked the visa of the Swiss man involved in the physical assault on a female Thai doctor near Yamu Cape in Phuket last week.

The Thai doctor, 26-year-old Tarndao Chandam, filed a complaint against Urs Fehr after the Swiss man attacked her on Saturday, Feb. 24, when she and her friend sat on the steps outside his luxury villa near Yamu Cape in Phuket. Salt, sea and spoonbills

During a morning stroll through vast salt fields in the seaside town of Samut Sakhon, I couldn’t resist but take breathtaking photos of a large flock of birds. Close by, experienced birdwatcher Suchart Daengpayon (also known as Mr. Tee) led a small group of foreign tourists on a trip to see the food-seeking behaviors of the spoon-billed sandpiper, an endangered shorebird species.

Fortunately, Mr. Tee kindly allowed me to use his spotting scope and gave me a brief overview of bird conservation efforts in tambon Khok Kham. Over 30 years ago, he and his neighbors established the Khok Kham Natural Conservation Club after working with an international survey team that wanted to get insights on the biodiverse marine habitats in Thailand’s wetlands. Mid-sea airport for Hua Hin would cater to the rich

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming Thailand into a global aviation hub. The plans involve a nationwide overhaul and expansion of Thailand’s airport infrastructure to support both domestic and international travel.

And while Hua Hin’s existing airport wasn’t mentioned in the plans specifically, another interesting development for the region was. Swiss man’s visa revocation requested

The commander of Region 8 Police in Phuket, Lt. Gen. Surapong Thanomjit has announced that Phuket police have made an official request to the Immigration Police to revoke the visa of 45-year-old Urh ‘David’ Fehr – he’s the Swiss citizen who is alleged to have attacked a female Thai doctor at the beachfront step of his villa in Cape Yamu.

Thai Airways International (THAI) will begin services to Perth in Western Australia and to Colombo in Sri Lanka on March 31, and to Cochin airport, which serves Kochi city in Kerala, southwestern India, on April 2.

Chiang Rai hits highest air pollution levels in Thailand

Air pollution has reached critical levels in the northern and northeastern regions of Thailand, with 36 provinces reporting particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations exceeding the safe standard, according to a recent report from the Air Pollution Control Department (APCD) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

A power bank exploded on an AirAsia flight mid-air, sending passengers into panic. The plane was flying from Bangkok to Nakhon Si Thammarat in the south of the country when flames and smoke were seen.

7-Eleven in Thailand Reports Record Income of 399 Billion Baht, plans expansion

CP All has revealed business profit results for 2023 for 7-Eleven, in which the convenience stores had an overall income of 399 billion baht, having a gross profit of 112 billion baht and increasing from the previous year by 16.1%.

5,000 Nurses To Be Trained In 2 Years Amid Severe Shortage

Three distinct prehistoric animal fossils unearthed in Khon Kaen

A new discovery has surfaced in the Tambon Muang Wan region of Nam Phong district, Khon Kaen, as fossils of three different prehistoric animals have been unearthed. This comes as an addition to the previous findings in the same area.

The analysis of the collected fossils is being undertaken by a team led by Sasa-On Khansubha, a palaeontologist affiliated with the Sirindhorn Dinosaur Museum in Kalasin. MPs say ‘no’ to gender recognition bill

Parliament on Wednesday rejected the draft bill for legal gender recognition, title, and protection of gender-diverse people, with 154 votes in favor, 257 against, one abstention, and one vote not cast.

Health ministry wants ban on recreational cannabis by year-end

The government wants to ban recreational use of cannabis by the end of this year, Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said on Wednesday, threatening to put thousands of marijuana shops and farms that have sprung up around the country since a decriminalization drive two years ago out of business.

Thailand will seek to get a new cannabis bill — which will explicitly outlaw recreational use of cannabis — approved by lawmakers in the lower house by the end of October, before parliament goes into recess, Dr. Cholnan said in Bangkok. The Ministry of Finance is planning to revise the criteria for value-added tax (VAT) exemption on products sold via online platforms by reducing product value from 1,500 baht to 1,000 baht, a source familiar with the matter said Friday.

Foreigners invested over 73.16 billion baht in condominiums in Thailand last year, increasing 23.5% year on year (YoY), the Government Housing Bank’s Real Estate Information Center (REIC) reported on Friday.
