Heatwave alert in Thailand with temperatures hitting 39 degrees Celsius

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning forecasting sweltering conditions across the country today, with peak temperatures expected to soar between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius. Despite the heat, there is a possibility of isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon, with some regions experiencing light rainfall.

The weather on the east coast is expected to be hot during the day, with a 20% chance of thunderstorms in areas like Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat. Bangkok’s eastern and central bus terminals set for relocation

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit announced plans on Tuesday to move the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) and the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Mo Chit 2) to the Krung Thep Abhiwat Central Terminal. The intention behind the move is to offer more convenience to travelers, as the Central Terminal can be easily reached using the MRT electronic rail system.

A black panther sighting near Phanoen Thung in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park has been reported by the Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP). The images, captured by a tourist named Sith Naowanirut on Feb. 25, were confirmed by park chief Mongkol Chaipakdee, who stated that the panther appeared unaffected by the tourist’s presence. Chiang Mai tops world’s most polluted cities due to rampant forest fires

Chiang Mai has been blanketed by worsening haze, catapulting it to the top of the list of the world’s 10 most polluted cities. The thick smog is a direct consequence of forest fires that have been burning unabated for approximately two weeks.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) detected a total of 1,420 hotspots on Monday alone. Of these, 193 were located in Chiang Mai. Satellite information revealed that the hotspots were distributed across various areas, with 490 in forest conservation zones, 375 in forest reserve areas, 237 in agricultural regions, 186 in land reform areas, and the remaining in community areas. Some 250 firefighters backed by two helicopters on Tuesday managed to halt a forest blaze that raged through 33,000 rai of Ob Luang National Park in Chiang Mai’s Hot district.

The fires were put out just a day after the Third Army Area deployed troops to help fight the blaze and deter local villagers from setting new fires in the vast national park. 650,000 people treated for PM2.5-induced illnesses so far this year

More than 650,000 people have received medical treatment for illnesses caused by air pollution since the beginning of this year, particularly related to PM2.5, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Of these, more than 300,000 had respiratory diseases, about 80,000 heart and brain diseases, over 110,000 eye infections and irritations, and over 140,000 had skin infections. Continued …

Thai exports in January see highest growth in 19 months

Thailand’s exports in January expanded for the sixth consecutive month, totaling US$22.6 billion (815.7 billion baht), and growing 10% year on year. Ministry of Commerce permanent secretary Keerati Rushchano said on Friday that the growth in January was the highest in 19 months, since June 2022.

The Immigration Bureau on Monday updated its online service for foreigners who need to report their presence in the kingdom every 90 days.

The Immigration police chief said the “90 Days Online Notification” service initially covers foreign investors who have received promotional privileges from the Board of Investment. It would later be expanded to cover other kinds of visas, he said. Continued …

PKK officials plan measures to combat air pollution, water shortages

On Monday, the Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Committee, led by Deputy Gov. Kittiphong Sukhapakul, convened to address drought conditions and formulating strategies for the prevention and management of wildfires, smog, and PM 2.5 dust particles.

Slow economic growth, lack of foreign investment are major challenges

Thailand’s biggest economic challenge is that its economy has been growing at a slower pace, about 3% per annum, than Malaysia and China, at about 5% annually, because it lacks the ability to attract foreign investors, according to Kobsak Pootrakool, executive vice president of the Bangkok Bank and a respected economist.

Consumer confidence rose for a sixth consecutive month in January, reaching the highest level in 47 months since March 2020, propped up by the government’s stimulus measures to propel spending and reduce electricity and fuel prices.

AOT sees soaring profits as global aviation industry thrives

Airports of Thailand (AOT) on Monday reported a profit of 4.56 billion baht in the first quarter of fiscal 2024 (October-December 2023), a jump of 1,231% compared to the same period last year, which saw 342.77 million baht of profit.

The airport authority said it had enjoyed significantly increased revenue from both its aviation and non-aviation businesses. Satellite images show there are some 600 hotspots in Thailand, mostly on forested land, and more than 4,000 in Cambodia, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Agency (GISTDA) said.

Boat Carrying Chinese Tourists Capsizes, All Safely Rescued

A long-tail boat carrying seven Chinese tourists plus the vessel’s crew members capsized off Krabi yesterday, but fortunately all were safely rescued by a passing boat. The accident occurred near Koh Lao Lading island, around 300 meters from Koh Hong, with the two islands being part of Krabi’s Than Bok Khorani National Park.

Koh Samui Sees Increase in Visitors Following Visa Exemptions

Wiwat Chuenban, the chairman of the Surat Thani Provincial Tourism Industry Council, revealed an increasing number of foreign and Thai tourists visiting Koh Samui in January and February.

After a visa exemption for Chinese tourists, there were four direct flights from Chengdu, China, to Surat Thani in one week. 5,000 Chinese tourists a day on Phuket over Chinese New Year

Chinese tourists have descended on Phuket to celebrate Chinese New Year, pushing hotel occupancy on the island to 81%. Phuket has long been a popular destination for Chinese travelers due its strong Chinese heritage and ancestry.

The director of the Phuket office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand says the number of Chinese arrivals has jumped to between 4,000 and 5,000 a day. A 35-year-old Chinese man on vacation with his family in Pattaya for the Chinese New Year reportedly fell to his death from a condo in north Pattaya yesterday afternoon. The incident took place at approximately 2pm at a condo in central Pattaya whose name has been withheld pending further investigation.

Suvarnabhumi’s capacity to increase after third runway is operational in July

The construction of the third runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport will be completed in time for its use in July, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said Sunday. Once the new runway is in use, the airport capacity will be increased from 67 flights per hour to 94 flights per hour, Suriya added.

It was a case of “third time lucky” for Shane, whose two previous attempts at the epic crossing were scuppered by poor wind conditions.

The boy wonder achieved his kite foil crossing in just four hours and 10 minutes – the fastest time yet for windsurfers of any age. He even beat the four hours and 45 minutes crossing time recorded by a jetskier. Thailand’s wee windsurfing wizard was flagged-off from Surfspot in Hua Hin and landed at Pattaya Kitesurfing Clubloongchat on Na Jomtien Beach.

Unsafe levels of smog cover upper Thailand

Forty-eight from all 77 provinces, especially those in the northeast, experienced hazardous levels of ultrafine dust on Thursday morning, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

GISTDA reported at 10am that 13 provinces were blanketed by red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 75.8 to 97.7 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air over the past 24 hours. The government’s safe threshold for PM2.5 is 37.5 µg/m³, while the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines recommend 25 µg/m³. Continued …

Elephant Tramples Owner to Death

Thailand said not in a big enough crisis to warrant huge loan for digital wallet

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has come up with an opinion on the government’s 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme, questioning its transparency and necessity in the current economic climate.

Apart from listing the pain points of the scheme, the watchdog also called on the Election Commission (EC) to look into the discrepancies between the Pheu Thai Party’s initial policy proposal and its eventual presentation before Parliament in September. Commerce, industry and banking group worried over Thailand’s declining inflation

The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) on Wednesday maintained its gross domestic product growth prediction for the year at 2.8%-3.3%, but warned that continuous decline in inflation rates were a sign of a weak economy.

Thai rice exports face fraught year ahead

Myriad risk factors still loom over rice exports this year, notably the volatility of exchange rates, the declining competitiveness of Thai rice, intense price competition, the impact of the El Niño weather phenomenon, and India’s restrictive export policy, according to the Thai Rice Exporters Assn.

Chookiat Ophaswongse, the association’s honorary president, said the latest data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicted global milled rice production would remain stable at 513 million tons this year, with China the largest producer at 144 million tons, followed by India at 132 million tons.
