“These might help to make Hua Hin the “City of Happiness”: Turn the so-called “entertainment” areas (Walking St, Wonderland, Soi 80, etc.) into genuine family oriented bar/restaurant/cafe entertainment areas; keep the “seafood” wooden piers; have a bridge over Phetkasem road in downtown area to enable safe crossing; encourage fair taxi fares, instead of the “cartel” rip-off; stop the encroachment of food places on HH beach; stop dangerous windsurf and jetskis near the shore on HH beach.” – AJB

Hua Hin launches dengue fever prevention campaign

Local authorities in Hua Hin have launched a dengue fever prevention campaign aimed at reducing the risk of outbreaks through stronger community involvement and coordination.

Heavy rain and strong winds expected across Thailand

The strong southwest monsoon continues to dominate the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, while the monsoon trough stretches across upper Myanmar and upper Laos, the Thai Meteorological Department said today.

At the same time, severe tropical storm Wipha has been downgraded to a tropical depression over Laos, and is expected to weaken further into an active low-pressure system. Continued …

Thailand to host FIVB Women’s World Volleyball Championship in August

For the first time in history, Thailand will host the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship, marking a significant milestone, as the event will also be held in Southeast Asia for the first time.

The tournament is set to take place from Aug. 22 to Sept. 7 across four major cities: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Nakhon Ratchasima. Thailand Rejects 0% Tax Deal with US, Cites Risk to Local Farmers

Thailand has rejected a 0% tax agreement with the U.S., citing significant potential impacts on its agriculture sector. The government is instead launching a 200-billion-baht (£4.5 billion) soft loan scheme to support private sectors and farmers.

Deputy Finance Minister Julaphan Amornwiwat affirmed the country’s firm stance, stating the 0% tax proposal is untenable due to international obligations and the vulnerable nature of the domestic agriculture sector. Thailand says nearing deal with US to lower 36% import tariff

Thailand is close to an agreement with the United States to lower a threatened 36% tariff on its exports ahead of the Aug. 1 deadline, according to Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, who expects trade talks to conclude within days.

The Southeast Asian nation will submit additional clarifications and final details of its proposal to U.S. trade officials in the coming days, Pichai said yesterday. A deal is expected to be announced before the new tariff rate takes effect, as Thailand has already provided the Washington with “almost everything” requested. Continued …

Will Indonesia regret its trade deal with Trump?

Be careful what you wish for, lest it come true. That ancient proverb comes to mind when considering the eagerness of America’s trade partners around the world to negotiate deals with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. Four countries already have, with Indonesia the latest to do so – and possibly the first to regret it.

The United States has announced a complex, tiered tariff regime, including a 25% tariff on labor-intensive goods such as textiles and footwear, a 40% tariff on goods suspected of being “transshipped” or having content of Chinese origin, and a 50% tariff on so-called “strategic sectors”, including aluminium, copper, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals. No more changes to minimum wage this year, says minister

The Ministry of Labor has confirmed there will be no further increases to the minimum wage this year, saying the next shift will take place in 2026. Minister Pongkawin Jungrungruangkit said yesterday that two wage adjustments have already taken place this year.

The minimum wage is usually only adjusted once a year, he said after a meeting of the national wage committee, which includes representatives of government, business and labor. Continued …

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, has unveiled its 2026 strategy under the theme “Value is the New Volume”— ushering in “The New Thailand” and signaling a shift to redefine Thai tourism through quality, balance, and sustainability.

Sorawong Thienthong, minister of Tourism and Sports, said that despite global tourism facing several challenges in 2024, Thailand remains a leading destination, having welcomed more than 18.08 million international visitors and generated 1.4 trillion baht in revenue so far this year. Russian arrivals to top last year’s figure

Despite U.S. sanctions and intense tourism competition, the Russian market this year is expected to exceed the 1.74 million visitors recorded in 2024, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Thai sausages sizzle in global rankings

TasteAtlas, a global platform dedicated to cataloging local cuisines, has ranked Sai Krok Isan and Sai Ua among the top 50 most delicious sausages worldwide. Topping the list is Salsiccia, an Italian sausage made from minced pork, pork fat, salt, pepper, and a variety of spices like fennel seeds, cumin, garlic, and chilli.

Sai Krok Isan, ranking 23rd, is a local delicacy from northeastern Thailand. It is made from minced pork combined with rice, garlic, and salt, stuffed into cleaned pork intestines, and then fermented to develop a distinctive sour taste. Continued …

Thai villages win big for green tourism push

Thailand’s grassroots tourism projects just bagged six major accolades from the Pacific Asia Travel Assn. (PATA). Deputy government spokesperson Sasikarn Watthanachan credited the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) and its community network partners for putting Thailand’s local experiences on the global stage.

Leading the charge was the Ban Na Ton Chan Homestay Community Enterprise, which clinched Thailand’s first-ever PATA Grand Award. The project was hailed for preserving traditional culture while offering immersive, sustainable homestay experiences that benefit the entire village. Continued … 

U Power inaugurates smart battery-swapping station in Thailand

U Power (UCAR) has launched Southeast Asia’s first operational smart battery-swapping station in Phuket. The Thailand station is said to integrate U Power’s UOTTA battery-charging and swapping system technology to improve the transmission of data and station control logic.

The inauguration of the Thailand station comes after U Power’s delivery of the first battery-swapping compatible taxi fleet in Southeast Asia this May. Continued …

President Donald Trump said yesterday the United States had agreed to a “massive” trade deal with Japan that would include a 15% tariff on its exports.   • Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in BangkokThe first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

    Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. Thailand braces for heavy rains as tropical storm Wipha approaches

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has issued its first warning for tropical storm Wipha, which was recorded as a strong tropical storm over the northern South China Sea on July 19. With maximum sustained winds of 93 km/h, the storm is moving toward the Gulf of Tonkin and northern Vietnam, where it is expected to weaken into a tropical depression today.

Minister says no to US demands for zero tariff on agricultural products

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat stated that Thailand cannot yield to all U.S. demands for zero tariffs on U.S. products, as doing so would severely impact Thai farmers and the economy. However, Julapun noted that he could not disclose the specific details of the U.S. demands, as both countries’ negotiators have signed a non-disclosure agreement.

Julapun said Thailand could agree to reduce import tariffs to zero only for products where the country has already established zero tariffs for specific countries. “But we cannot lower import tariffs to zero for agricultural products or other sensitive items, as this would immediately affect the economic system,” Julapun explained. The Ripple Effect of US Tariffs: From Steel to Household Appliances

The United States has introduced import tariffs of up to 50% on electrical appliances containing steel components, effective June 23, 2025. This includes products under HS codes 84 and 85, such as washing machines, refrigerators, dryers, and dishwashers. 11 Thai banks report profit dip, with rising bad debt concerns

Thailand’s commercial banks have announced their Q2 2025 results, with a combined profit of 66.2 billion baht, reflecting a 3% decline compared to the previous quarter’s profit of 68.3 billion baht. However, for the first half of the year, the total profit of 134.5 billion baht saw a 4% increase year-on-year.

The increase in provisions for bad debts reached 57.6 billion baht in Q2, a 5.3% rise compared to the previous quarter, and an 8.7% drop compared to the same period last year. The total provisions for the first half of 2025 amounted to 112.3 billion baht, a decrease of 9% year-on-year. Continued …

The American doctor who helped shape Thai medicine

When Thailand opened its first medical college at Siriraj Hospital in 1890, one of the first people at the front of the classroom was not Thai — but he spoke the language better than most locals. Dr. George Bradley McFarland, a U.S.-born physician raised in Siam, became the first foreign lecturer at the new Faculty of Medicine. His work would go on to shape Thai medical education for decades.

Born in Bangkok in 1866 to American Presbyterian missionaries, McFarland grew up speaking Thai fluently. He later traveled to the United States, where he earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Continued …

Heavy rain forecast in Hua Hin throughout the week

Residents and visitors in Hua Hin are being advised to prepare for a prolonged spell of wet weather, with heavy rainfall expected across the city for much of the coming week.

According to the Thai Meteorological Department’s 7-day forecast, Hua Hin is likely to see heavy rain every day through Saturday , with rainfall affecting between 40% and 60% of the area each day. More than half of edible flowers contaminated with pesticides

Two studies have found that more than half of sampled edible flowers in Thailand were contaminated with hazardous pesticides. The findings were presented recently at the 33rd Medical Academic Meeting held at the Impact Forum in Muang Thong Thani, Nonthaburi.

The first study was conducted by the Food Quality and Safety Office, under the Department of Medical Sciences, in collaboration with officials from the department’s offices in Chiang Rai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Songkhla, and Chonburi. Survey finds public blames monks’ misconduct for Buddhism’s decline

The National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) has released the findings of a new public opinion survey titled “Crisis in Buddhism!”, revealing widespread concerns among Thai Buddhists over the state of the clergy.

Conducted by NIDA Poll between July 14–16, the survey gathered responses from 1,310 Buddhists aged 18 and above across all regions, education levels, occupations, and income brackets nationwide. Thailand ‘can’t match’ Vietnam’s US tariff proposals

Thailand o the United States as Vietnam did, warns Somjai Phagaphasvivat, an expert in international economics, who added that Vietnam was able to remove tariffs on all U.S. imports because it has free trade agreements (FTAs) with 27 countries, which have already reduced most of Vietnam’s import tariffs to zero. In contrast, Thailand is unlikely to do the same, because it has FTAs with fewer countries than Vietnam does, he said.

“Nevertheless, one thing we must consider is that, at some point, we may have to do what Vietnam did in the future. We will need to enhance our competitiveness, and when the time comes and we have more FTAs with other countries, we’ll be able to open up fully,” said Somjai. Continued …

Tourism revival goes into reverse

Over the past three years, Thai tourism has been struggling to regain the peak it once reached prior to the pandemic, while neighboring countries Malaysia and Vietnam have already surpassed their performance in 2019, recording 37 million and 17 million tourist arrivals, respectively.

The closest opportunity occurred in 2024 when Thailand welcomed 35.5 million foreign tourists, an increase of 26% year-on-year. However, repeating the success of 2019 when 39.9 million foreign tourists arrived and spending hit 1.9 trillion baht is unlikely to occur in 2025, given that Thailand only attracted 16.6 million foreign arrivals in the first half, dipping 4.6% year-on-year. During the latest round of tariff negotiations, via video conference on Wednesday, the United States proposed that Thailand increase market access for U.S.-made products, reduce non-tariff barriers, and promote U.S. investment in Thailand, Deputy Commerce Minister Chantawit Tantasith told the media yesterday. He claimed the talks are heading in the right direction, though, as both sides appear to be satisfied.

  • Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in BangkokThe first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

    Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. Good news for Hua Hin fishing: Hua Hin to deploy 800 artificial reefs

Hua Hin is set to deploy 800 artificial reef blocks as part of a project aimed at rehabilitating marine resources and strengthening the livelihoods of local fishers. Soi 94 roadworks set for completion by end of October

Road construction work on Soi 94 in central Hua Hin is now expected to be completed by the end of October, according to local officials. The resurfacing project, which covers a 500-meter stretch of the road, includes the installation of reinforced concrete and upgraded drainage systems.

Electric bills to remain steady through 2025

Electricity bills during the last four months of this year will not be further reduced as the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has decided to maintain the current power tariff despite positive factors that could lead to a lower rate.

The tariff rate, which is used to determine electricity prices, stands at 3.98 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), applicable until the end of August. K-Research puts GDP growth at 1.2%

Thailand has launched two colossal new bridges to stop wild elephants from meeting a grisly end under speeding cars. The towering structures were built in Rayong’s Khao Chamao district and Chanthaburi’s Kaeng Hang Maew district — key corridors for elephant herds roaming the east.

Hua Hin mango plantation ‘encroaching on state land’

Authorities say they have found evidence that a large commercial mango plantation in Hua Hin district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province encroaches on nearly 4,000 rai of state land.

They said the plantation, known as Rai Hub Phueng, covers parts of Kaeng Krachan National Park and adjacent state-owned property. In addition to mango trees, the site features a number of buildings and other infrastructure. Continued …

Heavy rain and strong winds expected as monsoon intensifies

Thailand is set to experience widespread thundershowers and severe weather conditions today as the monsoon trough moves across the upper north, Laos, and upper Vietnam, with a low-pressure cell covering the upper northeast. Simultaneously, the southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf is strengthening.

Wild elephants forage for food, wreak havoc in Prachin Buri

A group of five wild elephants, including a mother and calf, from Thap Lan National Park, invaded a worker’s home late at night, causing significant damage as they searched for food. Thailnd exports threatened by US tariffs

Thailand faces a significant challenge in its export sector, as the U.S. has imposed 36% tariffs on Thai goods under its reciprocal tariff program. This rate is higher than the tariffs agreed by competitors like Vietnam (20%) and Malaysia (25%), and will take effect from Aug. 1.

Lifeguard Rescues French Children Swept Away by Strong Currents at Kata Beach

American Tourist Assaulted by Bar Owner for Filming Venue

The victim, 38, presented himself at Pattaya City Police Station in the early yesterday morning with a bloodied face, a gash over his left eyebrow, and severe swelling around his eye. He also submitted a video clip as evidence of the incident.

Fake Cops in Pattaya rob 230,000 Baht from Chinese Tourist

A Chinese tourist was abducted and robbed of over 230,000 baht by men disguising themselves as police officers. The incident happened early last Thursday morning. CCTV footage shows two men, dressed in dark clothing, forcing 52-year-old Lin Yifan into a car near a North Pattaya Road food stall. Lin was waiting for a ride he had ordered via an app.

Section of Soi 94 closed to Saturday for repair work

Road resurfacing work has resumed on Soi 94 after months of delays, with a section of the road temporarily closed to traffic until July 12, Hua Hin City has announced.

The closure affects the stretch between the junction in front of the 7-Eleven and the junction at Soi Charoen Pattana 2, near Craft, Scruffy’s, and Pizza Garden. The road will be closed daily from 9am to 4pm through to Friday to allow for the installation of drainage pipes, which form part of the ongoing reinforced concrete resurfacing project. Continued …

Thailand Tightens Grip on Ride-Hailing with Tough New Rules

BoT pegs growth at sub-2% for 18 months

The Bank of Thailand has assessed the Thai economy is likely to grow at a rate of less than 2% over the next 18 months, primarily due to pressures from U.S. tariff policies.

The proposed 36% tariff on U.S. imports of Thai products could pile pressure on the manufacturing sector, with workers likely to bear the brunt, says the Employers’ Confederation of Thai Trade and Industry (EconThai).

Easy Airline to Launch Flights Linking Hua Hin, Surat Thani, Phuket & Hat Yai

Easy Airline is set to expand its aviation operations with a new regional service connecting Hua Hin to key southern destinations: Surat Thani, Phuket and Hat Yai. The airline has taken delivery of a new aircraft from the United States, signaling a move to promote tourism and improve regional connectivity. Initial operations will begin as charter flights this September.

These “reciprocal tariffs” have severely disrupted bilateral trade. For example, U.S. imports from China by sea fell 28.5% in May compared to the previous year — the sharpest drop since the Covid-19 pandemic — after the U.S. imposed tariffs as high as 145%. U.S. container imports dropped 7.2% in May to 2.18 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), with major West Coast ports like Long Beach and Los Angeles were hit hardest, seeing Chinese imports fall by over 30%. U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will not extend the tariff deadline further and will proceed with the stringent customs tariffs set for early August. Arsenic contamination in Chiang Mai children linked to river fish

An alarming discovery was made in Mae Ai district, Chiang Mai province, where arsenic levels in two young children were found to exceed normal standards. This was believed to be linked to fish consumption from the Kok River, which flows from Shan State, Myanmar, into Thailand.

The Chiang Mai Provincial Public Health Office conducted tests Monday on four residents from Kaeng Sai Mun village, Mae Ai district, with urine samples collected on May 19. Twelve Arrested in Late-Night Gambling Raid in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Twelve people have been arrested after authorities raided a suspected illegal gambling setup operating out of a private residence in the coastal district of Thap Sakae. The late-night operation saw gamblers scatter in all directions as officials closed in on the property.

The raid took place at a hoU.S.e in Moo 5, Ban Thung Kok, Thap Sakae District, following a tip-off to provincial administrators that an illegal gambling den had been operating regularly at the site, particularly during weekends and holidays. “Imcranib 100”, the first targeted cancer drug in tablet form developed and produced in Thailand, is the result of the research and development work of Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Krom Phra Srisavangavadhana.

Thai woman dies in attack by wild elephant in Surat Thani forest

A Thai woman lost her life in an attack by a wild elephant while traveling on a motorcycle with her son through a forest in the southern province of Surat Thani. Officers rushed to Thap Nok Forest within the Khlong Yan Wildlife Sanctuary after being alerted to the elephant attack by one of the victims, a 37-year-old woman.

A mother has been killed and her son seriousy injured after they were attacked by a wild elephant in a remote forested area in Kanchanaburi. The incident occurred while the pair was foraging for local fruits in a mountainous area near their village.

CPI falls for 3rd straight month

The consumer price index (CPI) declined for a third consecutive month in June, attributed to lower energy and food prices, though there are no signs of deflation, according to the Commerce Ministry.

Headline inflation dipped by 0.25% year-on-year to 100.42 in June, said Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director-general of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office. Thailand Rethinks Tourism Strategy After 34% Plunge in Chinese Arrivals

Thailand’s tourism sector is in a bind, as Chinese visitor numbers slump, forcing tourism bodies to reassess targets and boost their efforts to attract tourists. In the first half of 2025, arrivals from China plummeted by 34%, with only 2,265,556 visitors recorded, putting China behind Malaysia, which recorded 2,299,897 despite a smaller decrease of 5.6%.

Overall, the country accommodated 16,685,466 international tourists during the first six months of 2025, marking a 4.7% year-on-year decline. ‘Moderately Serious’ Arsenic Levels Found in Kok River
