Bangkok Urges Work from Home Amid Severe Air Pollution Threat

Bangkok residents are being urged to work from home next week, as the city’s air quality is set to deteriorate drastically. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has made this call to counter rising levels of PM2.5 particles, which are anticipated to worsen due to pollution and adverse weather conditions.

Thailand is taking its fight against air pollution to the skies, deploying special flight operations to tackle the dangerous PM2.5 dust particles. Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri announced that the innovative operations have already improved air quality in key regions, including Bangkok, the central region, and the upper north.

Launched by Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (AEROTHAI), the mission began on Dec. 1 last year in Bangkok and surrounding areas, expanding to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Tak, and Mae Hong Son provinces the following day. 256 tons of electronic waste seized from Laem Chabang Port

The Customs Department has seized over 256 tons of electronic waste smuggled from Japan and Hong Kong via Laem Chabang Port, department spokesperson Panthong Loykulnanta told a press conference.

Panthong said that the Customs Department has been vigilant in monitoring illegal imports of electronic waste. PTT Global Chemical says it has started producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Thailand for the first time, with planned annual output of 6 million liters for the first phase.

Belgian tourist dies kite surfing in Pranburi

A Belgian man lost his life yesterday while kitesurfing off Pranburi’s coastline. The victim, identified as Mr. Brendan, 55, was swept onto rocks by powerful waves at Khao Kalok, located within the Thaokosa Forest Park in Pak Nam Pran, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

Local police were alerted to the incident in the evening after the kitesurfer failed to return to shore. Emergency services, including rescue volunteers and forest park officials, responded swiftly, but the challenging weather conditions, including high tides and strong waves, made the rescue operation extremely hazardous. Transwoman robbed by teenager in Hua Hin

An 18-year-old man befriended and later robbed a transwoman, leaving her with nothing. The incident began when the transwoman met a young man named Ball online on Jan. 4, after he posted in an online Hua Hin community group seeking companions.

The transwoman, named Ice Cream, and her friends invited Ball to join them, learning he was alone in Hua Hin and staying at a hotel. The group spent time by the sea, with Ball generously buying snacks and showing kindness, earning their trust. Continued …

Thailand braces for cold snap with Bangkok at 16 degrees

The Thai Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) today issued a weather forecast indicating a further drop in temperatures across Thailand, with Bangkok experiencing lows of 16 degrees Celsius and strong winds. The upper northern and northeastern regions are expected to see cold to very cold weather.

Huge waves, floods batter Surat Thani, including Koh Phangan

Strong waves and flooding due to higher sea levels wreaked havoc in coastal communities in seven districts of Surat Thani province yesterday. The affected districts were Tha Chana, Chaiya, Tha Chang, Kanchanadit, Don Sak, Muang and Koh Phangan, the popular holiday island.

Unsafe air detected in only 16 Thai provinces

Unsafe levels of ultrafine dust were detected in 16 out of Thailand’s 77 provinces, mostly in the north and the northeast, while good air was recorded in many southern provinces, as well as Bangkok and Samut Prakan.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 10am yesterday that the unsafe levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) in the 16 provinces were at the orange level (starting to affect health). Continued …

Hua Hin Swedish consulate suspends operations after death

The Swedish Consulate in Hua Hin will become vacant starting Jan. 15, following the passing of Honorary Consul Vajaravudh Sukseree. Consequently, the consulate cannot provide consular services until a new honorary consul takes office.

Teen Cuts Off Stepfather’s Arm in Attack in Prachuap Khiri Khan

An 18-year- old boy has been arrested after attacking his mother’s ex-husband yesterday with a machete, severing his arm in a fit of rage. The incident, captured on video, occurred in the Prachuap Siri area of Prachuap Khiri Khan municipality, leaving the 54-year-old victim critically injured.

The violent altercation reportedly began as an argument outside a grocery store, where the teenager confronted the man for insulting his biological father. Witnesses described seeing the young man wielding a machete, striking the victim’s left arm with such force that it was severed and fell onto the road. Holiday death toll hits 436 in 10 ‘dangerous’ days on Thai roads

A total of 436 people died and a further 2,376 were injured in 2,467 traffic accidents across Thailand from Dec. 27 to Jan. 5, the 10-day period the government considered the high-risk New Year holiday travel period.

Retired nurse rakes in a nest egg with ostriches

A retired nurse from Trang’s Mueang district has traded scrubs for feathers, earning a tidy nest egg by raising ostriches and selling their eggs and chicks. Prachuap Singkerk has transformed a two-rai plot of land next to her home into an ostrich haven, where she cares for nine of the towering birds: four males and five females.

Restaurants at the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in the central province of Ratchaburi have come under criticism after a foreigner filmed staff washing dishes in a canal filled with murky, greyish water.

Inflation rises slightly in December, driven by food and fuel

Expat tax returns due by March 31

Editor: We posted this news Saturday but several of our readers reported that the online site is in Thai only. We checked and translation is available in English, and in other languages if you use most any major Google or Microsoft platform – by right-clicking on the site. However, we found navigating the site dificult and could not find where to even start a filing.

There is also the question of how the dozens of dual tax treaties will be handled online – 95% of expats residing in Thailand reportedly come from countries with dual tax treaties with Thailand. Each one of those treaties is different. (information provided by Thai Examiner)

Highlights:
  • All income remitted to Thailand by foreign residents in the country for over 180 days last year is declarable;
  • all expats who have been residents of Thailand for 180 days or more in the course of the last year are liable to file a return;
  • taxpayers should use the D-MyTax (Digital MyTax) system;
  • the income tax payable by each foreigner depends on the nature of such income and the tax treaty with their country of origin;
  • for most foreign expats on basic incomes such as Bt60,000 a month, the tax bill is approximately Bt11,000;
  • only electronic forms will be accepted until April 8, 2025; paper returns must be received by the end of March;
  • the return pertains to taxable income earned within Thailand and remitted to Thailand during 2024;
  • 95% of foreign expats originate from countries that have tax treaties with Thailand,
  • each country’s treaty with the kingdom is substantially different;
  • each individual residing in Thailand has unique circumstances, complicating the matter, particularly with the differences in tax treaties;
  • it is unclear how each individual’s situation will be treated;
  • the Thai government is reportedly drafting legislation to increase the tax burden on foreign residents, meaning that foreign residents in the kingdom will eventually be liable to pay tax on their worldwide income;
  • an independent survey showed that 16% of people plan to take professional advice, while a full 58% would not file a return at all;
  • 55% of expats in the survey are considering relocating to avoid spending 180 days in the country.

The director-general of the Revenue Department on Thursday called on taxpayers to file their end-of-year returns for 2024. This will be the first year that all foreign residents in Thailand are included.

54% tariff on wine imports eliminated ‘indefinitely’

Thailand is cutting alcohol taxes and tariffs in a bid to lower the cost of a night out and attract more tourists. A 54% tariff on wine imports will be “exempted indefinitely”, according to local media accounts of a Thai cabinet meeting, while excise duties on locally produced wine will be cut to 10% or below.

The measure is designed not only to expand the budding domestic industry, but also to add to supplies of less-expensive alcohol. The government had in recent years increased tariffs on wine in a bid to raise revenues. Hikers told to take care of own waste

Visitors at Phu Kradueng National Park in Loei generated over 4.5 tons of waste between Oct. 1 and Dec. 27, park chief Adison Hemathanon said on Sunday, before urging tourists to dispose their waste to protect the park’s natural environment.

2024’s elephant tragedy sparks soul-searching on safety of national icon

Tall, strong and excellent swimmers, it’s hard to imagine that elephants – Thailand’s national emblem – could succumb to floodwaters. So, when news emerged that two elephants had drowned in floods that struck Chiang Mai in October, shock and dismay rippled through Thai society.

On Oct. 5, two elephants were found dead in the Mae Taeng River, six kilometers from their home at the Elephant Nature Park in the northern capital. Park staff identified the drowned creatures as 16-year-old Fah Sai and 40-year-old Ploy Thong. The latter was blind. Continued …

15% multinational corporate tax begins Jan 1

The Royal Gazette website yesterday published a royal decree for the top-up tax on multinational corporations operating in Thailand, to come into effect on Jan. 1. The top-up tax is a mechanism designed to ensure that multinational corporations pay a minimum level of corporate income tax, typically aligned with the global minimum tax (GMT) initiative led by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

If a multinational corporation pays corporate income tax at a rate below 15%, it will need to pay the difference (to reach 15%) in the country where its parent company is headquartered. Thailand’s imposition of top-up tax will allow corporations to pay the difference in the kingdom instead. Continued …

GDP growth under pressure amid threat of US tariff hikes

Thai GDP might expand at a slower pace in 2025 than the projected growth of 2.6% this year, as the policies of U.S. president-elect Donald Trump could put pressure on exports, which have rebounded significantly to become a major growth driver of the economy.

While most forecasters predict economic growth will rise in 2025, Kasikorn Securities anticipates that the country’s GDP growth might fall to 2.4% because of emerging risks from policy uncertainties in the U.S., its trade war with China, and more intense competition from Chinese goods shipped to other markets. The Thai Hotels Assn. (THA) said raising the daily minimum wage rate for unskilled workers next year will not affect hotels in Chonburi and Phuket because most already pay more than usual.
