Prachuap Khiri Khan Town: A serious option for long-term living

There are three places in my home province of Prachuap Khiri Khan where I like to spend time. Hua Hin is at the north end of the province. It’s the largest of the three, and is a popular tourist and expat destination, with a seemingly endless amount of goods and services.

Ban Krut is at the south end of the province. It’s a sleepy little fishing village that gets busy on weekends with tour groups from Bangkok and hosts a small, mostly German expat community. Continued …

Thai court rules traffic fines unlawful since 2020

Thailand’s top court has dropped a legal bombshell, ruling that traffic fines issued by the Royal Thai Police (RTP) since July 2020 were unlawful — potentially affecting millions of motorists.

The Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) Wednesday partly overturned a ruling by the Central Administrative Court (CAC), which had previously found that two RTP announcements on traffic fines, issued in July 2020 and March 2023, were invalid. https://aseannow.com/topic/1351009-thai-court-rules-traffic-fines-unlawful-since-2020/Continued …

Over 100 daily deaths of children under five tied to air pollution in East Asia and the Pacific

As Thailand grapples with unhealthy levels of air pollution, leading to school closures and widespread health concerns, UNICEF’s latest analysis sheds light on the devastating impact of toxic air on children across East Asia and the Pacific. Air pollution, which peaks in many parts of the region during the dry season from now until April, is linked to over 100 deaths in children under five every day.

The analysis reveals that all children in East Asia and the Pacific – 500 million children in total – live in countries with unhealthy levels of air pollution. Household air pollution, caused by solid fuels used for cooking and heating, is linked to more than half of all air pollution-related deaths in children under five. Meanwhile, 325 million children live in countries where average annual particulate matter (PM2.5) levels exceed World Health Organization (WHO) guideline levels by more than five times. Continued …

Cost, quality remain top considerations for travelers

Cost and quality remain the dominant priorities for travelers, outweighing sustainability considerations, according to the latest report by the WTTC. In a survey of more than 10,000 respondents, more than 50% said cost was the most important factor influencing purchasing decisions, while around 30% prioritized quality. Only a small minority (from 7% to 11%) said sustainability was a primary factor.

Julia Simpson, WTTC president and CEO, said: “Travelers care about sustainability but when buying travel, cost and quality are king. Customers expect businesses to create affordable sustainable options. But many WTTC companies inspire change – whether that is regrowing coral reefs or reducing food waste. Customers engage with brands that have strong values.” Continued …

Bangkok’s light pollution has unseen impacts on health, ecosystems, and sustainability. These massive displays cast an intense glow, sometimes dazzling nearby drivers and pedestrians. Some of the city’s highways are fully covered on the sides with rows of these dazzlingly lit-up billboards displaying their consumerist wares. Continued …

“Re: your item of Feb. 5 entitled ‘Thailand’s expat tax filing deadline approaching’, and the second paragraph “If you’re filing yourself: Revenue offices will be busier as the deadline approaches. Thai Exports Surge by 8.7% in December Amid Looming Trade War Concerns

In December, Thai exports surged by 8.7% year-on-year, extending a six-month growth streak. The total export value reached USD24,765.9 million, surpassing forecasts from SCB EIC and the Reuters Poll. This consistent performance was bolstered by demand driven by concerns over U.S. trade protection measures and a notable rise in electronics and gold exports.

This robust export growth was further supported by strong demand from key trading partners, including China and the United States. Additionally, the weaker Thai baht played a role in enhancing the competitiveness of Thai products in global markets. Analysts suggest that this upward trend in exports could continue into early 2025, provided global economic conditions remain stable and trade policies remain favorable. Continued …

Time to decommodify electricity

The international community has long recognized the urgent need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and shift to renewable energy, and in recent years many governments have pledged to reach net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions, albeit over extremely long timeframes. But they will never get there so long as they treat electricity, which is central to the clean-energy transition, like any other market good.

The green transition is driven by several factors, such as energy intensity, investment flows, consumption patterns, and distribution systems. But its success hinges on humanity’s ability to move away from “dirty” fossil fuels toward clean, renewable energy sources, particularly solar and wind. And that requires a profound transformation in how electricity is generated, distributed, and consumed. Continued …

US tariffs could flood Thai market with cheap Chinese goods

Thailand may soon be swamped with an influx of cheap Chinese imports if the United States slaps high tariffs on Chinese goods, warns former Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai. The country must brace itself for economic turbulence, or risk being caught off guard, he warned.

Speaking at the Chula Thailand Presidents Summit 2025 at Chulalongkorn University, Surakiart cautioned that if the U.S. tightens trade restrictions on China, surplus goods will inevitably be redirected to other countries, with Thailand a likely destination. Advances in technology have helped reduce the risks from radiation, making nuclear plants safer, cheaper to build and smaller. Continued …

Thailand’s car production declined by 20% in 2024 compared to the previous year, hitting its lowest level in four years, as domestic sales and exports struggled to gain momentum. Industry experts attribute this downturn to global economic uncertainties, rising production costs, and weakened consumer demand both locally and internationally.

However, recovery is expected to be gradual, with analysts predicting a modest rebound in the coming years. Continued …

In the vibrant depths of Thailand’s Gulf, a hidden crisis unfolds — discarded fishing gear, also known as “ghost gear,” is wreaking havoc on marine life. Teams of determined scientists and passionate scuba divers have uncovered alarming evidence: this neglected debris accounts for a staggering 10% of all marine plastic waste, ensnaring countless species, from delicate sea snails to majestic whale sharks.

During a dive in 2023, researchers stumbled upon colonies of the elusive Neptune’s cup sponge, only to discover that many were ensnared in abandoned nets. This revelation sparked concern for marine biodiversity, demonstrating how ghost gear creates a sinister cycle of destruction — trapped creatures lure predators, which in turn become victims themselves, perpetuating a deadly loop. Thailand’s Destination Visa loophole that could cost you

The much-hyped Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is proving to be more of a bureaucratic headache than a dream ticket. While Bangkok Immigration (Division 1) has published criteria for extending the visa by six months, these guidelines aren’t binding on provincial offices, leaving holders navigating a minefield of uncertainty.

The biggest revelation? It’s far easier to leave the country every 180 days than to fight through the paperwork jungle for a local extension. A review of the DTV Facebook group shows that 75% of holders say a simple border hop is the safest bet over the five-year validity of the visa. Continued …

Temples, elephants, and tales of Siam

Thailand, now one of the world’s most-visited destinations, was once an enigma to the Europeans. In the late 19th century, Siam, as it was then known, began offering a glimpse into its unknown kingdom through the expedition of Norwegian ethnographer Carl Bock.

I Spent a Week in This Lesser-known Part of Thailand and It Was Paradise

In August, I traveled up Thailand’s western coast, from the island of Phuket to the laid-back province of Phang Nga. The region is famous for the dramatic limestone karst formations that rise from Phang Nga Bay, but traveling off-season — and off the beaten path — allowed me to see it from a new angle.

At a beachfront hotel near the town of Khao Lak, monsoon rain released a cascade of fragrance from the tropical flowers in the garden. Watching the sun rise over the Andaman Sea the next morning, I found it hard to believe this pristine shoreline was, in 2004, the site of a devastating tsunami. Continued …

Thailand losing war on PM2.5 as country enters another year under smog

Residents of Thailand face a grim reality as they enter 2025, with skies shrouded by fine dust posing a growing risk to their health.

PM2.5, or dust particles measuring less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, can be inhaled deep into the lungs, passing into the bloodstream and lodging in other organs. Many factors translate to this mass pollution, ultimately lowering the quality of air. The issue has become more urgent than ever, as on Jan.8 Bangkok found its way to rank 8 on the list of the most polluted cities in the world. In most cases, dust pollution is over five times the levels deemed safe. Continued …

Burnt sugarcane volume on declining trend, says cane and sugar board

The volume of burnt sugarcane during the 2024-25 harvest season is expected to decrease by more than 10% compared to the previous year, with the target set at a 25% reduction, due to several incentives, an official of the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB) said.

The incentives for sugarcane farmers to harvest 100% fresh sugarcane, continuing from last year, aims to increase income from sugarcane leaves and tops. This initiative is expected to help reduce sugarcane burning, lower the causes of PM 2.5 dust pollution, mitigate health impacts on the public, and foster a positive environment for economic activities. Expats in Thailand Discover ‘The Best Thing About America’

Palm trees and a salty breeze are great, but the people are what make an expat community special. During the past month, I’ve spent a lot of time in the neighborhood adjacent to mine and discovered a lively and diverse group, including a few Americans who’ve made th  move to Thailand like me.

I was invited to a meeting of the “Pratumnak Hill Networking Group,” a stodgy name for a bunch of expats getting together to drink beer, listen to music, and pontificate on a wide array of topics… minus religion and politics of course. The meeting was at a tiny kiosk of a bar located on Pratumnak Hill (“The Hill”), the charming community sandwiched between the neon lights of Pattaya City and the laid-back shores of Jomtien Beach (where I live) on Thailand’s eastern seaboard.
