Thailand’s proposed cannabis crackdown steeped in political games

On a weekday afternoon, more and more people start slowly filing into a subterranean plaza off Bangkok’s iconic Khaosan Road – for decades a tourist hub in the Thai capital. The underground space, formerly home to a supermarket, is lined with small shops and tables and chairs, and is cool and breezy. It has to be.

Air-filtration systems are required to be installed here to keep the mostly international tourist crowd comfortable, and more pertinently, clear the haze of thick marijuana smoke. This is Plantopia, also known as Weed City. Multiple stores exclusively sell cannabis and related paraphernalia – and customers can smoke it on the spot. Continued …

Salt, sea and spoonbills

During a morning stroll through vast salt fields in the seaside town of Samut Sakhon, I couldn’t resist but take breathtaking photos of a large flock of birds. Close by, experienced birdwatcher Suchart Daengpayon (also known as Mr. Tee) led a small group of foreign tourists on a trip to see the food-seeking behaviors of the spoon-billed sandpiper, an endangered shorebird species.

Fortunately, Mr. Tee kindly allowed me to use his spotting scope and gave me a brief overview of bird conservation efforts in tambon Khok Kham. In search of Thailand’s tasty hideouts that the locals would rather keep secret

“Stomach and soul,” says chef David Thompson with a smile. “The two things that sum up Thailand.” He pauses. “Well, if I was being flippant and succinct.” David, as I know only too well, is a master of both.

It’s quarter past two in the morning, just outside Amphawa, a town an hour or two to the southwest of Bangkok. And I’m a little confused. We’re here, loitering beneath the ornate eaves of the King Rama II Memorial Park, to observe a wai khru, an ancient Thai ritual where students pay respect to their masters, both human and divine, or — in this case — to honor the art of cooking. My stay on one of Thailand’s last untouched islands

What a difference 30 minutes makes. That’s how long it takes to sail by public ferry from Phuket to Koh Yao Yai. You’ll have heard of the first island; Thailand’s most popular and overdeveloped holiday hub. But the latter, not so much.

And it’s startlingly different. I am here to stay in its brand-new Anantara resort among vast grounds of virgin jungle, palm groves and farmland. The plot has a long private coastline and is so big that the hotel requires a fleet of six speedboats, five golf buggies, two vans and two 4WDs, plus one longtail, while guests have use of free bicycles to get around. Time to calm down about plastics

How to deal with the waste generated by the half-billion metric tons of plastic manufactured each year? One approach is to consume fewer polymers, recycle them more, and stop the rest from getting into the natural environment.

Another is to declare the whole process a scam and hope the problem will somehow go away of its own accord. Faced with a seemingly intractable dilemma, the latter approach is tempting. Fixing things is hard; assigning blame far easier. Such a strategy is unlikely to change much, however. Continued …

Thailand ranks as third country most exposed to climate change economic losses

While flood risk is projected to intensify globally, the main driver of major weather-related economic losses in Southeast Asia, are tropical cyclones, according to data from the Swiss Re Institute.

Rank Country Annual economic loss (% of GDP)

2 US 0.38%
3 Thailand 0.36%
