Economy Faces Strain from Chinese Goods Influx: BoT

The influx of Chinese goods has put pressure on Thailand’s manufacturing growth and has hindered loan expansion within the banking sector, according to Bank of Thailand Gov. Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput yesterday. He addressed these concerns at the “Thailand Next Move 2025: Resiliency for an Uncertain World” seminar held by Money and Banking magazine.

Since 2014, Southeast Asian countries have witnessed a consistent rise in Chinese imports, with a noticeable acceleration starting in 2020. This surge is largely attributed to escalating geopolitical and economic fragmentation, Sethaput noted. By 2023, Thailand’s imports from China reached $71.1 billion (roughly 2.53 trillion baht), making Thailand the second largest importer of Chinese goods in Southeast Asia, just after Vietnam. From space missions to smart factories

Personal computers, GPS, mobile phones, digital cameras, the internet: many of the technologies in our lives today are older than we might think. They originate from concepts from the 1960s and 70s – an enormously creative, innovative period.

Another innovation on everyone’s mind is the digital twin, which many scientists and engineers today describe as the backbone of a new industrial revolution. A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical object. This digital counterpart enables real-time monitoring, diagnostics and predictive maintenance, which significantly increases operational efficiency. Continued …

A day at Khao Kheow Zoo

Even though it was nearly midday, I found myself stuck in traffic for several kilometers en route to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. It turned out to be the outcome of families trying to spend the last few days of school break with Moo Deng, the superstar baby pygmy hippo.

Rethinking Loy Krathong celebrations for a sustainable future

There is a growing concern about the environmental impact of the traditional Loy Krathong festival, particularly regarding the disposal of floating lanterns and offerings in the water. While the festival is a cherished cultural practice, there are growing calls for a balance between celebration and sustainability.

The remnants of krathongs, often made of non-biodegradable materials, lead to pollution, and many festival-goers experience discomfort when faced with the unpleasant task of cleanup afterward. Eco-Friendly Ways to Keep Cool

As the world grapples with the escalating impacts of climate change, one of the pressing challenges is finding ways to stay cool during increasingly hot summers without exacerbating the problem. Traditional air conditioning is a double-edged sword; it provides relief from the heat but also contributes significantly to global warming.

Cooling is the second largest driver of electricity demand after industry, currently accounting for 20% of electricity consumption globally. Following current trends, the capacity of cooling equipment is expected to triple by 2050 – rising from 22 TW in 2022 to 58 TW in 2050 – the equivalent of 16 billion mini-split air-conditioning units, resulting in a more than doubling of electricity consumption. Thai poverty levels decreased in 2023

A total of 2.39 million Thais were classified as poor in 2023, a significant decrease from the previous year of 3.79 million people, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said in its latest report on Thailand’s poverty and disparity situation. The percentage of the poor population in Thailand also went down from 5.4% in 2022 to 3.4% in 2023, the NESDC reported.

The council attributed the decrease in the poor to continued economic expansion, especially in the agricultural sector, which has the highest percentage of low-income workers. Re: Weather reports

“I like and benefit from reading the news of weather events throughout Thailand. Please do not drop this part of your excellent service.” – Alastair

“I totally agree with your correspondent regarding Hua Hin weather forecasts. I think I am right in saying that Hua Hin has one of, if not, the lowest annual rainfall figures in Thailand. The editor comment about expats going to other regions has little validity when we want to know the accurate local forecast, if that is technically possible. After all the name is hhexpatnews! – TW

Editor: As we said previously, most of our readers are interested in what’s going on in Thailand, not just in Hua Hin. Thailand’s weather, when appropriate, will continue to be covered. And now we also have a weather report for Hua Hin only (see at left). We finally found an app that worked for this task.

Also, our name is Hua Hin Expat News, not Hua Hin News, meaning its news for expats in Hua Hin. We cover the limited amount of local news, but we believe our readers are interested in more than that. It’s a newspaper, folks, with a variety of news coverage for the variety of interests of our audience. If there’s something that doesn’t interest you, move on to the next story.
