Thailand must adapt to meet its unique demographic challenge

Thailand is facing a unique demographic problem unlike other aging countries in northeast Asia and Europe. The country is growing old before it attains economic prosperity, a situation pointed out by a recent article in The Economist.

Unlike their counterparts in the developed world, the country will have to grapple with the challenge of supporting a burgeoning elderly population without the financial cushion that comes with high GDP per capita. Thailand had a GDP per person of just $7,000 in 2021, while 14% of its population was already 65 or over, setting it on course for a demographic dilemma that could have far-reaching implications for its socio-economic fabric. PM Srettha Thavisin was in Beijing a few days ago as part of the gathering of leaders from 130 nations attending China’s 10th anniversary of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Thai exports at US$46 billion in first 7 months of 2023

Thai exports amounted to US$46.18 billion between January and July, driven by free trade agreements (FTAs), Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) Director-general Ronnarong Phoolpipat announced this week. The top five FTAs contributing to this figure were:

  1. ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA): The agreement’s total value was U$16.49 billion, accounting for 72.7% of its utilization. Major exports under this agreement included automobiles for transportation (weighing less than 5 tons), sugar, petroleum oils, oils from bituminous minerals, and cars for personal transportation (1,500 – 2,500 cc). Exports unexpectedly rise for 2nd straight month

Thailand’s customs-based exports unexpectedly increased 2.1% in September from a year earlier, helped by higher shipments of rice and farm products, the commerce ministry said today, despite sluggish global demand.

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) is closely monitoring the Israel-Hamas conflict for fear that if the war expands to include other neighboring Arab nations, Thai vehicle exports could be affected late this year.

Visa-Free Visits for Russian Tourists Extended Nov 1

Starting on Nov. 1, Thailand will allow Russian tourists to stay visa-free for up to 90 days. The move comes as tourists from the country have had increasingly few options for travel, given Moscow’s war on Ukraine, the impact of sanctions, travel restrictions, and a weakening ruble.

Baby Deer Found Living Among Street Dogs Rescued by WFFT

When locals in a village in Thailand spotted a baby animal running around and barking near packs of street dogs, they immediately realized something was wrong. Despite the baby’s dog-like cries, he definitely wasn’t a dog — he was a muntjac deer who had wandered away from a nearby forest and was now all alone.

As soon as the villagers realized what was happening, they contacted Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) for help. The baby deer, later named Cha Lao, was only a few days old and clearly needed help. He was being chased by street dogs and would bark to try and keep them away. Continued …

Bangkok was listed among the world’s top 10 most polluted cities on Friday as levels of harmful PM2.5 dust soared to 48 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3). IQAir, a website that collects air quality data worldwide, ranked the Thai capital 10th in its global pollution list as of 7am on Friday.

While PM2.5 levels remain at safe levels in other parts of the country, they have risen beyond the safety threshold of 37.5μg/m3 in most areas of Bangkok, the Pollution Control Department (PCD) reported. Continued …

Thailand’s EV initiative: Driving toward a greener future

The Thai government has embarked on an ambitious plan to replace aging government vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs), in line with its carbon neutrality goal set for 2050. The Thai EV initiative move was prompted by a notification issued by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, encouraging the use of EVs within the government sector.

Srettha’s order, issued via the Secretariat of the Cabinet, has directed the Finance and Energy Ministries to collaborate with the Budget Bureau, the Office of the Council of State, and other relevant sectors to facilitate the procurement process for EVs. To celebrate their 7th anniversary, the Hua Hin Ladies (HHL) are seeking donations of rice on Thursday, Oct. 26, with the donations given to Jungle Aid.

Donations should be dropped off at Cheers Restaurant & Bar any time from 9am until closing. Those attending the HHL party that day can bring donations the evening of Oct. 26.

Canned fish, soap, and toothbrushes and toothpaste are also welcomed. Last year, the event collected 715 kg of rice, 220 cans of fish, and 150 bars of soap.

Taxes made simple: the story of VAT

Weak baht contributes to 350-billion-baht trade deficit

The private sector has expressed concern at the continued weakness of the baht, which has resulted in Thailand’s trade balance being in deficit for eight consecutive months to the tune of 350 billion baht.

According to the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC)’s Chairman Chaichan Chareonsuk, even though Thai exports have benefited from the weakened baht, reducing the prices of Thai products in line with the currency, it has also increased the costs of importing goods and raw materials needed for production. Late king, Rama IX, remembered in Hua Hin

Over a thousand people yesterday attended ceremonies honoring the late H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Participants carried the royal cypher of His Majesty from Phon Kingphet Public Park to Wang Klai Kangwon. Hua Hin’s blue swimming crab bank initiative honored

Hua Hin has been listed in the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories for 2023 for the “blue swimming crab bank” initiative in Khao Takiab. The initiative is organized by the local fishing community of Khao Takiab and focuses on the conservation of the blue swimming crab population.

Under the initiative, any gravied female crabs caught by the local fishing fleet are released back into the sea after they are placed in a nurturing condition to spawn. From October 2018 to May 2023, the crab bank initiative released over 150 million crab larvae into the sea, representing an economic value exceeding 1,000 million THB (approximately 28.5 million USD).

The crabs are released back into the sea every morning from 9am on the beach next to Amazon Coffee in Khao Takiab,. Anyone can take part in the releasing of the crabs.

Mama noodle maker sets out expansion plans

Thai President Foods, the manufacturer of Mama instant noodles, plans to invest more than 2 billion baht over a three-year period to expand its production capacity in response to anticipated future growth, both domestically and abroad.

Gregal, a beachfront Mediterranean restaurant, has opened in Hua Hin. The restaurant is located beside The Royal Princess Condominium Hua Hin. Wine tax in Thailand: A Protectionist Barrier?

Why is wine tax in Thailand 250% on average? In most cases, duties constitute a state’s first protection against products imported from other countries in direct competition with local production.

Does Thailand produce wine? Yes, local production is around one million liters per year and is based in three areas of the country: Loei, Hua Hin and Khao Yai. The national oil and gas conglomerate PTT Plc has agreed to delay accepting payments of 8-9 billion baht for the gas it sells to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to help the government reduce power bills for the rest of this year. Gas makes up around 60% of the fuel used for power generation in Thailand.

The Thai baht opened slightly stronger today at 36.90 baht per U.S. dollar after the U.S. dollar weakened amid concerns about the impact of the Israeli-Hamas conflict.

Krung Thai Bank currency analyst Poon Panichpibul said the baht opened this morning stronger than the previous day’s close of 37.11 baht per U.S. dollar, gradually strengthening overnight supported by the dollar’s depreciation due to the bond yield’s decrease. Royal Thai Police submitted documents and evidence to the Thailand Courts to issue a warrant for the arrest of a Burmese man for the suspected murder of a former Thai diplomat at a house in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district. The suspect reportedly escaped arrest outside Bangkok but police believe he is still in Thailand.

Thailand’s low-earth-orbit satellite, Theos-2, was successfully launched on Monday from the Guiana Space Center, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said.

Football players from all over the province will be traveling to Hua Hin to compete in the Orchid Palm Homes Cup VIII on Oct. 29. Six teams have signed up, with clubs making the journey from Pranburi, Bang Saphan and Thap Sakae.

Families of those who died in mall shooting to get Bt6.2 million compensation each

The families of the two people who were killed in the Siam Paragon shooting will each receive 6.2 million baht in compensation from the Thai government and the mall’s owners, while the injured will each receive 350,000 baht each.

A young Thai woman was killed and an unidentified foreign man was missing after apparently being struck by a speedboat while swimming off of Koh Larn last night at sunset.

The tragic incident took place around 4pm off of Tian Beach on Koh Larn. Even during rainy season, Korat water supplies ‘alarmingly low’

The amount of usable water across 27 medium-sized reservoirs across the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima has dropped to alarmingly low levels despite the rainy season, raising fears of an impending drought, according to a provincial irrigation office official.

Police in the Bang Khen area of Bangkok this week were investigating another possible serial killer after it emerged that a 46-year-old man with four wives and a history of violent domestic abuse, but who claims mental illness, may have murdered five of his 10 children in the period from 2012 up to this month when he allegedly murdered his two-year-old daughter.

Suspected killer’s third wife arrested on murder charges relating to 4 infant boys

The third wife of the suspected serial killer, 46-year-old Songsak Songsaeng, was arrested by police on Friday on charges including murder. She appeared before the Criminal Court on Saturday in connection with the deaths of four infants between 2013 and 2018.

Jessada Meepian is the 33-year-old mother of a 12-year-old girl, Wiyada, the only surviving child out of five from the relationship between the pair who, it was revealed, on Friday, alerted authorities and activists to the murder of a two-year-old girl at the hands of Songsak and his fourth wife Sunan Nahuanin, the mother of the baby girl. Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) officers raided the home of Royal Thai Police (RTP) Deputy Commissioner Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn this morning over allegations of his involvement in an online gambling operation.
