Human-elephant relationship is a win-win

IEAT working on feasibility study for Land Bridge Industrial Estate project

The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT)’s feasibility study on the land bridge industrial estate project should be completed by the end of this year, probably within 6-8 months, the authority’s Gov. The Cabinet has approved a draft royal decree that sets the tax on profit from investment tokens at a flat rate of 15% instead of adding it to annual personal income.

Speaking to reporters after the weekly Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Revenue Department Director-general Kulaya Tantitemit said the lawmakers approved her department’s proposal to collect a flat 15% withholding tax for the sale of investment tokens and exempt the profits from being added to personal yearly income. Hua Hin-Chiang Mai flights go daily May 4

Air Asia has announced a significant expansion of its flights between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai. Travelers can look forward to daily flights from May 4 through June 14.

Flights will depart from Chiang Mai to Hua Hin at 10:20am and from Hua Hin to Chiang Mai at 12:20pm every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Continued …

The police suspect that a love affair and jealousy may have been the motives behind the deaths of a millionaire and her secretary in a house located in the Hua Hin district of Prachuap Kiri Khan province. Thai man survives black bear attack during ant egg hunt

A Thai man survived an attack by an Asian black bear while hunting for ant eggs within the Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary in the Isaan province of Buriram on the weekend.

The victim’s wife shared details of the incident on Sunday. She explained that her 60-year-old husband, Phumin Joysaku, entered the forest in the morning to search for ant eggs. The eggs and pupae of weaver ants are also known as Khai Mod Daeng in Thai. Continued …

Thailand’s gold prices hit new high, breaking 37,000 baht mark

Gold prices continue to surge in Thailand, with the cost of gold ornaments breaking the 37,000 baht mark for the first time. The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) reported a significant increase compared to the previous day’s rate, where the selling price of gold ornaments reached 37,100 baht per baht-weight as of the latest update on March 11.

The domestic buying price for gold bars was set at 36,500 baht per baht-weight, with the selling price slightly higher at 36,600 baht. The price for gold ornaments was quoted at a buying rate of 35,838.24 baht and a selling rate of 37,100 baht. In the international market, the gold spot price stood at $2,180 per ounce. Continued …

A New Vision for Thailand: Interview with Pita

Pita Limjaroenrat was the prime ministerial candidate of the Move Forward Party in Thailand’s May 2023 elections. Under Pita, Move Forward captured the majority of votes and seats in the Thai parliament, but institutional barriers prevented his ascension to prime minister.

Threat from contaminated fruit and vegetables from China part of a wider problem

Thailand is making plans to shift its trade focus away from China and toward India in the longer term. It comes as news emerged this week of contaminated fruit and vegetables being dumped on Thai markets from China. Many of the substandard products are for sale at a fraction of the cost offered by Thai producers and farmers.

Similarly, Thailand’s manufacturing sector especially in fashion and furniture, is being decimated by China. Recent figures show only a 30%-45% utilization of factory capacity in these sectors. The current predicament raises sharp questions about the Thai government’s trade and economic development policies over the last 10 years. PM Budgeted 139 Million Baht To Fund World Tours

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has been given a sum of 139 million baht in government funding at his disposal with which he may travel the world over for the current fiscal year, according to a government official.

Progress on 6 Thai FTAs now under negotiation

Thailand is negotiating 11 free trade agreements, including five related to upgrading existing FTAs, along with developing six new FTAs, as the kingdom aims to expand trade and investment with key trading partner countries near and distant.

According to information from the Department of Trade Negotiations, Ministry of Commerce, Thailand appears to have successfully negotiated and implemented a total of 15 FTAs with trading partners from 18 countries or territories. These include the ASEAN member countries, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, India, Peru, Chile, Hong Kong SAR, and Sri Lanka. Continued …

Extra flights scheduled for passenger convenience during Songkran

Sarun Benjanirat, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Office of Thailand (CAAT), has announced that 38 additional flights have been scheduled to transport passengers during the upcoming Songkran festival in response to the directive of Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit to implement short-term measures to counteract high airfare prices. Two women found shot dead at property in Hua Hin

Police are currently investigating the deaths of two women found shot at a property in Hua Hin. The deceased, identified as a 63-year-old businesswoman and her 46-year-old secretary, were discovered on Sunday by the son of the older woman, after he grew concerned over his inability to contact his mother for several days.

Traveling from Bangkok to Hua Hin, he arrived at his mother’s home to find it securely locked, with the air conditioning still running. Upon entering the house through a back window, he was met with a foul smell, prompting him to alert local authorities. Continued …

Anthrax outbreak in Laos prompts raw meat warning in Thailand

Kenika Ounjit, a deputy government spokesperson, yesterday revealed a public health warning from the Department of Livestock Development. The warning urged the public to refrain from consuming raw meat. This follows a report of an anthrax outbreak in Laos.

According to the report, three cases of anthrax were identified on March 4 in the Soukhoumma district of the Lao province of Champasak. This province shares a border with Thailand’s eastern Ubon Ratchathani province, raising concerns for potential cross-border transmission, said Kenika, highlighting raw beef, buffalo, goat, and sheep meat as potential carriers of the bacterium. Hazardous smog in 48 provinces

Forty-eight provinces were blanketed with hazardous levels of PM2.5 on Monday morning and 11 provinces, mostly in the north, faced red levels of pollution, with Chiang Mai suffering the most.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency reported at 10am on Monday that the highest level of particulate matter, 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), was detected in the northern province of Chiang Mai, at 125.3 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Boy, 14, arrested for shooting death of teen in Hua Hin

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested following the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old in downtown Hua Hin last Thursday evening. Hua Hin Police Station launched an investigation into the incident, which happened on Naresdamri close to the entrance to Hua Hin Fishing Pier.

The shooting not only claimed the life of the young victim, known as “Nong Din,” but also left his 16-year-old friend seriously injured after being caught in the gunfire. Continued …

Frequent use of mosquito spray urged as dengue death toll rises

In a warning against the spread of dengue fever, the Public Health Ministry has urged people to protect themselves by using anti-mosquito sprays and lotions.

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said on Sunday that at the latest meeting of the National Communicable Disease Control committee, he learned that the number of dengue patients this year has risen to 17,783 cases, more than double the number compared to the same period last year. The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) is calling on the government to examine fruit and vegetables purchased from neighboring countries and China more carefully after pesticide contamination was discovered in some imports of farm produce.

Someone is poisoning Rayong’s dogs, 36 dead so far

Three dog owners in Rayong’s Nikhom Phatthana district have asked police to take action against those responsible for poisoning their pets in separate incidents, resulting in the deaths of 36 animals. Somjit Palapol, a durian farmer, claims that his 19 dogs were poisoned on March 6, 17 of which died.

He said that he raised his dogs with love and best care, but they were killed by poison-laced food. ‘I am speechless and broken-hearted. I have already filed a complaint with the police, as the killings violate the law,’ he said. Continued …

Thai citizens view corruption within the civil service sector as motivated by greed more than any other reason, a new NIDA poll published on Sunday revealed.

Thai retail sector struggles despite tax incentives and tourist spending

Despite increased spending by tourists and tax incentives to encourage buying, Thailand’s retail sector is under strain. The sector, facing the challenges of a surge of substandard goods from China, is burdening local entrepreneurs.

Thai Retailers Assn. Vice President Chatchai Tuongratanaphan predicts a growth of only 1%-2% in the retail sector for the first half of the year. Most of the 12,000 Thais employed in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates are illegal workers who were lured with promises of high pay. There are only about 4,500 who are fully and correctly documented.

Nipa Nirannoot, the Thai consul-general in Dubai, said many Thai women have been lured to work in massage parlors, but end up being forced into prostitution. Michelin plans to invest 300 million euros in Thailand

54 of 77 provinces face hazardous smog levels

Fifty-four out of 77 provinces in Thailand were blanketed with hazardous levels of ultrafine dust on Thursday morning, with 27 provinces, mostly in the north and the northeast, experiencing red (seriously harmful) levels of pollution.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported on Thursday that the highest level of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) was detected in the northernmost province of Chiang Rai, at 128.8 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air over the past 24 hours. The government’s safe threshold for PM2.5 is 37.5 µg/m³, while the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines recommend 25 µg/m³. Continued …

Temperatures in Hua Hin and across Thailand are set to soar over the next week. The Thai Meteorological Department’s seven-day forecast for Hua Hin says maximum temperatures will range from 36–38 °C, with average temperatures between March 6-12 reaching 35°C.

Salt, sea and spoonbills

During a morning stroll through vast salt fields in the seaside town of Samut Sakhon, I couldn’t resist but take breathtaking photos of a large flock of birds. Close by, experienced birdwatcher Suchart Daengpayon (also known as Mr. Tee) led a small group of foreign tourists on a trip to see the food-seeking behaviors of the spoon-billed sandpiper, an endangered shorebird species.

Fortunately, Mr. Tee kindly allowed me to use his spotting scope and gave me a brief overview of bird conservation efforts in tambon Khok Kham. Over 30 years ago, he and his neighbors established the Khok Kham Natural Conservation Club after working with an international survey team that wanted to get insights on the biodiverse marine habitats in Thailand’s wetlands. Heat stroke is a real danger with “feels like” temperatures of around 50 degrees Celsius possible in the current humid conditions, the weather office warns.

The Meteorological Department said that on Tuesday feels-like temperatures peaked at 50.6°C in Trat, 48.1°C in Bangkok, 42.5°C in Krabi, 39.9°C in Tak and 38.7°C in Nakhon Ratchasima. Continued …

Consumers biggest losers as speeds drop, prices rise after telecom mergers

Mergers in the telecommunications industry have resulted in poor network quality and rising prices, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said on Tuesday.

NESDC was citing a recent survey by the Consumer Protection Board, which said that consumers are paying more for very little. For instance, it said, the price of a basic mobile package has risen from 349 baht to 399 baht, while the internet speed has dropped. The commander of Region 8 Police in Phuket, Lt. Gen. Surapong Thanomjit has announced that Phuket police have made an official request to the Immigration Police to revoke the visa of 45-year-old Urh ‘David’ Fehr – he’s the Swiss citizen who is alleged to have attacked a female Thai doctor at the beachfront step of his villa in Cape Yamu.

Thailand’s hotels produce the most greenhouse gas in Asia

According to KResearch’s latest findings, Thai hotels are the leading culprits in greenhouse gas emissions, emitting a whopping 0.064 tons of carbon per guest each night, significantly higher than the regional and global averages of 0.057 and 0.019 tons, respectively.

My stay on one of Thailand’s last untouched islands

And it’s startlingly different. I am here to stay in its brand-new Anantara resort among vast grounds of virgin jungle, palm groves and farmland.
