Thailand Faces Surge in Influenza: 100,000 Cases, 9 Deaths

Thailand is grappling with a serious influenza outbreak, having witnessed nearly 100,000 infections alongside nine fatalities in just 15 days. The Ministry of Public Health has confirmed this increase, underlining schools as significant hotspots. In response, the government is mobilizing efforts, including the distribution of 4.5 million vaccine doses, to curb further spread.

Since the start of the year, the country has recorded 99,057 influenza cases, marking a sharp increase from late January’s 7,819 cases — a jump of 91,238 in just over two weeks. This spike not only surpasses the five-year average but also eclipses last year’s figures. Continued …

Rama II roadworks to finish ‘this year’

All construction projects along Rama II Road, also known as Highway 35, will be completed by the end of the year, according to the Transport Ministry.

Several provinces in the upper part of Thailand will experience isolated thundershowers, gusty winds and lightning strikes today, while the temperature in the northeast region will drop by 1-2 degrees Celsius, the Thai Meteorological Department said this morning.

Isolated thundershowers are forecast in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla; minimum 21-25°C, maximum 31-35°C; waves about 1-2 meters high and above 2 meters high in thundershowers. Continued …

The Meteorological Department forecasts continuous rainfall across Thailand from today through Saturday, due to a high-pressure system covering the country. The southern region will experience increased rainfall as a monsoon moves in.

During this period, a moderate high-pressure system or cold air mass from China will extend over northeastern Thailand and the South China Sea. Efforts are intensifying to rescue approximately 10,000 foreign nationals believed to be trapped within scam operations in Myanmar. As these centers become a focal point of transnational crime, authorities on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border have united in a robust crackdown.

Police Gen. Thatchai Pitaneelaboot, at the helm of the Royal Thai Police’s Anti-Human Trafficking Center and Police Cyber Taskforce, announced a renewed commitment to work closely with Myanmar under the National Referral Mechanism (NRM). Cyber Police in about-face on scam workers: Most were trafficked

The cyber police said most of the 260 scam workers who have been screened are victims, with only two to three having volunteered to work for the call-center criminals rather just one of them being trafficked as earlier stated.

The head of the Technology Crime Suppression Division police, said 50 cyber policemen are working with frontline agencies in collecting information on criminal activities of these call-center gangs. They are also checking information on mobile phones and other electronic devices of the 260 scam workers who crossed over from Myanmar’s Myawaddy township to Phop Phra district of Tak province. Efforts Continue to Lift Alcohol Ban on Thai Trains

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is preparing to make another attempt to lift the ban on alcohol sales aboard trains. Aiming to stimulate local tourism, the SRT will present its proposal at an upcoming meeting of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee on Friday.

In a previous meeting, the committee, governed by the Ministry of Public Health, rejected this proposal, citing potential detrimental impacts. Minivan Crashes into Elephant, Injuring Two; Elephant Later Found Dead

A minivan traveling downhill collided with an elephant crossing the road in Chonburi province early yesterday morning, leaving two people injured. The elephant initially walked away from the scene but was later found dead.

According to reports, the minivan was descending a hill near Ban Huai Yama, just before a PTT petrol station, when it struck an elephant that was crossing the road toward Hang Sung. The collision resulted in injuries to two passengers, a man and a woman. Continued …

New Casino Rules May Bar Thais Without $1.5M Fixed Deposits

Thailand is eyeing ambitious advancements in its tourism sector by proposing a multi-faceted gaming industry centered around new casino laws. However, these regulations have sparked discussions, given their stringent conditions for Thai locals wishing to enter casinos.

According to a draft released by the Office of the Council of State, Thai nationals must maintain fixed deposits totaling 50 million baht (approximately $1.5 million) for at least six months to gain entry to these casinos. Thai casino bill scrutiny concluded

The Council of State, the government’s legal advisory body, has completed its scrutiny of the Entertainment Complex Bill, and an online public hearing will be held until March 1 so that parties can express their concerns before it is sent to Parliament.

Thailand’s Economy Set for 2.8% Growth in 2025, NESDC Projects

Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) forecasts the country’s economy to expand by 2.8% in 2025, supported by rising government spending and tourism recovery.

Danucha Pichayanan, NESDC secretary-general, reported yesterday that Thailand’s economy grew 3.2% in Q4/2024, bringing the full-year growth to 2.5%, up from 2% in 2023. Thai dried fruit a hit with Chinese consumers as exports soar

Thailand led global exports of dried fruit to China in the first 10 months of 2024, with sales rising 10.2% from the same period last year to $125.64 million (4.24 billion baht), according to the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP).

Nissan Motor Thailand will continue to make new investments in Thailand, focusing on hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), though it needs to close a car assembly plant under a plan to adjust its production costs, says the Board of Investment (BoI).

German luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) expects another tough year for the Thai car market, caused by difficulties for consumers in accessing car loans, as well as high interest rates, which led to a 23% decrease in newly registered premium cars last year.

Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira has indicated that the global economic landscape necessitates a re-evaluation of current tax regulations, though specific details were not provided.

Presently, the Thai Revenue Department (TRD) stipulates that, effective Jan. 1, 2024, any assessable income transferred into Thailand from abroad by either Thai citizens or foreigners residing in Thailand for at least 180 days within a calendar year will be subject to personal income tax. Young Woman’s Tragic End in PKK Highlights Gambling Dangers

A 22-year-old woman, Natthaporn, was tragically found dead under a mango tree in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. She was reportedly overwhelmed by debt from online slot machine gambling. Her husband, Sukit, discovered her lifeless body Thursday after she failed to return home.

Wildfires rage across northern Thailand

The north of Thailand is grappling with a surge in wildfires, with 401 hotspots detected across 17 provinces, the Region 3 Forest Fire Control Center said. Phetchabun province has been particularly affected, registering 82 hotspots – the highest in the region – with fires spreading across almost the entire province.

The latest data released Thursday reveals the scale of the crisis. While specific data for other provinces was unavailable as of press time, Phetchabun’s 82 hotspots are of significant concern. Thai authorities recently cracked down on fraudulent call centers operating along the Thai-Myanmar border. The Gold Traders Assn. this morning announced buying prices for gold ornaments at 45,222.28 baht per baht weight and for gold bars at 46,050 baht per baht weight.

“Thank you for the article ‘Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax‘ and thank you ‘Thesatat’ for being a ‘pipe cleaner’ trying to be a good person and file taxes in PKK. The head of the PKK tax office personally promised us at a meeting in Hua Hin that “All DTAs will be honored.” Clearly, he hasn’t shared that with his subordinates. Personally, I’m going through AIT (American International Tax Advisors) and let them deal with these issues. At the end of the day (which may be two to three years out – maybe more – we hope to pay only what is legally required.” – PB

Editor: We have asked the tax consultants we used for our previous reporting to assess this latest news, but this is probably just a lack of understanding on the part of local officials about the tax. We anticipated this might be a problem early on, as the law is ambiguous and there are roughly 90 dual tax treaties to be considered, not all the same. We doubt, at this stage, that there has been any education of local officials, and even if there is, the complications might make them resort to an “everyone has to pay the tax” mentality. There will probably be a lot of misinformation on this issue as we go forward and we will try to keep you informed as we hear about problems or solutions. Getting expert guidance as you have done is probably a wise move.

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) is conducting an investigation into alleged connections between senior police officers and criminal activities linked to scam operations across the Burmese border. Toxic smog disrupts Bangkok flights as PM2.5 levels soar

Bangkok’s toxic air pollution has reached hazardous levels, forcing flight diversions and sparking health warnings across the city. On Sunday morning, several flights were diverted from Don Mueang International Airport to Suvarnabhumi Airport, as thick smog reduced visibility to just 150 meters.

Thai Exports Surge by 8.7% in December Amid Looming Trade War Concerns

In December, Thai exports surged by 8.7% year-on-year, extending a six-month growth streak. The total export value reached USD24,765.9 million, surpassing forecasts from SCB EIC and the Reuters Poll. Hua Hin hotels’ occupancy rate up 7.7% in 2024

Thai FDA approves kratom use for health and economic benefits

Swiss Dog Owner Defies PKK Beach Ban

A Swiss man has reignited controversy by defying a ban on walking his dogs at Suan Luang Beach, Bang Saphan district, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, despite previous attacks on tourists. The issue, which first drew widespread attention in August 2024, resurfaced after Mathias, the dog owner, was spotted on the beach on Jan. 20 with four unleashed dogs, two large and two small.

On Thursday, Thai and foreign tourists joined residents of Suan Luang Beach to lodge a formal complaint with the Pong Prasad Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO). They reported that Mathias, who had been ordered to remove his dogs from the area while legal proceedings were ongoing, has continued to disregard the ban, raising fears for public safety. Alarm sounds over hazardous air pollution

The government has announced urgent measures to combat the PM2.5 pollution crisis, including offering free bus and electric train rides and asking private companies to allow employees to work from home. The prime minister has instructed agencies to implement urgent, short-term measures to address it.

One measure is for state agencies to allow officials to work from home, while private companies will be asked to do the same in order to curb vehicle emissions, which is one of the sources of ultra-fine dust, or the PM2.5 pollutants. Continued …

Bangkok fights smog with free public transport for a week

The Thai government is taking action to tackle Bangkok’s persistent smog problem by offering free rides on the BTS, MRT, and BMTA buses for seven days, starting today. The initiative aims to reduce vehicle usage and ease air pollution in the capital.

Air pollution in the Thai capital forced the closure of more than 350 schools yesterday, city authorities said, as Bangkok was ranked the world’s seventh-most polluted major city by air quality monitor IQAir.

National park told to stop burning

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has ordered Thap Lan National Park in Prachin Buri to stop the controlled burning of a 600-rai area in the park after facing heavy criticism for creating air pollution.

The department’s director-general, Atthaphon Charoenchansa, said yesterday that he had reprimanded and ordered the Thap Lan National Park chief to stop the burning because current levels of fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns, or PM2.5, were critical. Continued …

The Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) has launched an investigation into an advertisement on the “Dark Web” offering 22 million sets of personal data, claimed to have been harvested from OPPO smartphones, for sale at US$20,000 (~ Bt680,000).

A 27-year-old man died yesterday after accidentally discharging his shotgun while riding a motorcycle in Buriram Province. The incident occurred on the Buriram-Prakhon Chai Road near Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University in Samed Subdistrict.

Bangkok’s air quality plummeted to hazardous levels, with PM2.5 dust particles soaring to the orange health-threatening category across all 50 districts, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported today.

The average PM2.5 concentration in the city reached 47.6 µg/m³ this morning, significantly exceeding the safe limit of 37.5 µg/m³. Corporate income tax cut to 10% in SEZs

The Revenue Department has reduced the corporate income tax rate for businesses in special economic zones (SEZs) to 10% for 10 years to promote investment in the zones.

According to Pinsai Suraswadi, director-general of the department, the tax reduction was approved by the cabinet on Jan. 13 and the department issued a royal decree to implement the tax reduction in SEZs. Handout phase 2 starts on Jan 27

The second phase of the government’s 10,000-baht cash handout will begin on Jan 27, two days earlier than planned, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said yesterday. Chinese Tourist Dies in Jet Ski Collision on Patong Beach

A 33-year-old Chinese tourist lost his life after a jet ski collision in Patong Bay yesterday. The incident occurred near the dolphin park area of Patong Beach, Kathu District.

An 18-year- old boy has been arrested after attacking his mother’s ex-husband yesterday with a machete, severing his arm in a fit of rage. The incident, captured on video, occurred in the Prachuap Siri area of Prachuap Khiri Khan municipality, leaving the 54-year-old victim critically injured.

The violent altercation reportedly began as an argument outside a grocery store, where the teenager confronted the man for insulting his biological father. Witnesses described seeing the young man wielding a machete, striking the victim’s left arm with such force that it was severed and fell onto the road. Holiday death toll hits 436 in 10 ‘dangerous’ days on Thai roads

A retired nurse from Trang’s Mueang district has traded scrubs for feathers, earning a tidy nest egg by raising ostriches and selling their eggs and chicks. 54% tariff on wine imports eliminated ‘indefinitely’

Thailand is cutting alcohol taxes and tariffs in a bid to lower the cost of a night out and attract more tourists. A 54% tariff on wine imports will be “exempted indefinitely”, according to local media accounts of a Thai cabinet meeting, while excise duties on locally produced wine will be cut to 10% or below.

The measure is designed not only to expand the budding domestic industry, but also to add to supplies of less-expensive alcohol. The government had in recent years increased tariffs on wine in a bid to raise revenues. A total of 93 fatalities and 575 injuries have been reported across Thailand over the first two days of the New Year’s holiday period, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).
