Massive Phuket crackdown sweeps away vast Russian business network, with Bt1.5 billion seized

Thai police have dismantled a vast network that illicitly assisted foreigners, primarily Russians, in securing long-term stays in Thailand through fraudulent means involving shell companies, officials reported on Friday.

The operation, spearheaded by a 45-year-old Russian woman and a Thai accomplice, facilitated foreign residency by setting up bogus companies. This network, based in Phuket, involved the Thai woman being listed as an executive or shareholder in over 270 companies. Under Thai law, while foreigners can operate businesses, they must do so as part of a joint venture with Thai nationals, holding no more than 49% ownership to protect local economic interests. Keto diets can cause premature aging of the organs

The ketogenic diet, commonly known as the keto diet, has gained immense popularity due to its efficacy in rapid weight loss. Originally developed as a treatment for epilepsy, the diet involves a high intake of fats and a significant reduction in carbohydrates.

While many people achieve their desired weight loss outcomes through this diet, recent research suggests that the long-term effects may not be as beneficial as previously thought. In particular, a study by researchers from the University of Texas Health San Antonio-USA has shed light on the potential for the keto diet to accelerate the aging of vital organs such as the heart and kidneys. 75-year-old working elephant discarded for being ‘in too much pain/

Pai Lin, 75, has endured more agonizing pain and abuse in her long life than it is possible to fathom. For decades, she was used as a working elephant, probably in the commercial logging industry before it was banned in 1989.

After logging was banned, this tortured, tragic animal was likely used to haul as many as six tourists at a time on her back in a heavy wooden seat that would have ground relentlessly into her body. At some point during her horrific 60-year “working career,” she was forced to beg on the streets. Her deformed spine speaks volumes about her life of abject cruelty. Continued …

Some Expat foreign residents face a base tax bill of up to Bt71k a year

Foreigners in Thailand will be expected to file tax asset returns for the year 2024 by the end of March 2025. This comes with Thai tax authorities moving to widen the kingdom’s tax base as the country seeks structural economic changes to address its growing aged population.

The new taxation regime could mean a minimum of Bt71,000 tax for some retired expats living in Thailand. This is based on the base income level stipulated by the Immigration Bureau. However, if an appropriate tax treaty is in place, it can help the taxpayer. For instance, a provision meaning that pension fund income is only taxed in the country where it is based. Continued …

Currently, domestic consumption contributes 58% to Thailand’s economic growth, up from 53% a decade ago. However, this trend contrasts with many neighboring countries that rely less on internal consumption for growth. In Singapore, for instance, the reliance on domestic consumption has decreased from 37% to 31% as it transitions into a “super-aged” society. Similar patterns are being noticed in Indonesia and Vietnam. Continued …
