Poll reveals youth expectations on Thai Children’s Day

Concert and music performance are the most popular Children’s Day activities, while top music artists are the individuals Thai youths are most interested to meet in person, according to a poll jointly conducted by the Ministry of Culture and Suan Dusit Poll. In Thailand, Children’s Day is observed on the second Saturday of January, which falls on Jan. 13 this year.

The Ministry of Culture, which is responsible for hosting Children’s Day activities nationwide, collaborated with Suan Dusit Poll to survey public opinion about Children’s Day this year. A total of 21,627 children nationwide — 58.6% males and 41.4% females — participated in the survey. Continued …

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections people can get from certain types of sexual activities. There are many such varieties of infections out there, with names like HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes viruses, human papillomavirus (HPV), and now monkeypox (more recently renamed as MPOX).

A series of reports have shown a concerning rise in STIs across the world, including in Thailand. Mortality from STIs is relatively rare in the modern world but the infections may contribute to significant morbidities. Black panther stuns visitors at Kaeng Krachan National Park

Electric mass transit pledge to zap pollution in Chiang Mai

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin pledged to foster the development of electric mass transit systems as a solution to the persistent air pollution issues plaguing the northern province. The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has set the fuel tariff (FT) surcharge on electricity, for the January through April period, at 39.72 satang per unit and the electricity unit price at 4.18 baht, after adjusting the formula for the calculation of natural gas and electricity prices.

Thailand’s escalating smog crisis: Choking smog in 55 provinces

People in 55 of the 77 provinces were breathing dirty air this morning, with red-coded pollution levels in 20 provinces, mainly in the Central Plains.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 9am that unsafe levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) ranged from 38.7 to 113.6 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the previous 24 hours. Bottled water contains more plastic particles than thought

A typical one-liter (33-ounce) bottle of water contains some 240,000 plastic fragments on average, according to a new study. Many of those fragments have historically gone undetected, the researchers determined, suggesting that health concerns linked to plastic pollution may be dramatically underestimated.

The peer-reviewed study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is the first to evaluate bottled water for the presence of “nanoplastics” — plastic particles under 1 micrometer in length, or one-seventieth the width of a human hair. The findings show that bottled water could contain up to 100 times more plastic particles than previously estimated, as earlier studies only accounted for microplastics, or pieces between 1 and 5,000 micrometers. The government has launched tax breaks to encourage consumer spending this year, in a bid to stimulate the economy. But will it work and who is going to benefit? From Jan. 1 to Feb. 15, the government is implementing “Easy E-Receipt”, a tax deduction measure.

Sales of smartphones and computer products have soared by 30%-60% in the first week of January, a trend that IT product vendors attribute to the government’s e-receipt program.

Grab Thailand is participating in the government’s tax refund scheme, “Easy E-Receipt,” by launching the “GrabMart Easy E-Receipt” campaign in collaboration with leading retailers, as well as small and medium merchant partners nationwide.

The campaign aims to stimulate domestic spending at the beginning of the year by helping shoppers obtain electronic tax invoices and receipts from the Grab app, enabling tax deductions of up to Bt50,000. Ukrainian drowns trying to swim from Koh Chang to nearby island

A Ukrainian man drowned near Bailan Beach on the island of Koh Chang in the eastern province of Trat. He reportedly tried to swim from Koh Chang to Koh Man Nai after an argument with his family.

Locals discovered the dead body near Bailan Beach in the Koh Chang Tai subdistrict, on Koh Chang at around 2pm yesterday, and reported the matter to the village chief, Termsak Sertsri. Foreigner Filmed Urinating Off the Back of TukTuk in Phuket

A video clip of a foreign man who was standing and urinating on the back of a tuk tuk in Patong has gone viral on social media this week, causing outrage and anger from many Thai social media users who demanded the foreigner be arrested and charged to the fullest extent of the law.

Thailand’s Famed Elephant Tourism Is Controversial — Here’s How to Pick an Ethical Sanctuary

In Thailand, it’s very easy to encounter an elephant. Some sites allow quiet observation, as you admire the massive animals from afar. Other tourist venues offer activities like feeding, riding, or bathing with elephants. Many places toss around the term “ethical” when describing the encounters, but they often are not the sanctuaries they promote.

(Editor note: Expat News visited the Elephant Nature Park outside of Chiang Mai, and we have to dispute one warning about not physically interacting with the elephants. Unlike some “sanctuaries”, where the elephants are basically penned in – or chained or caged, pachyderms at Elephant Nature Park mostly are allowed to roam free in the mountainous jungles of the park and visitors are allowed to mingle with them for bathing, feeding and walks. These are rescued elephants and their young, and as long as there is no riding of the elephants, we see no problem with this activity.)

New tax era in Thailand begins

Thailand is moving toward greater integration with the international tax framework to stamp out tax avoidance and evasion. Significantly, it comes with the Revenue Department reporting a surge in income in the first few months of the fiscal year, which will also see foreign residents more closely scrutinized for tax.

Thai national parks report record revenues and visitors in 2023

The Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation disclosed the rankings of the top 10 highest-earning and most-visited national parks from the pool of 133 parks for the previous year.

Based on revenue from January to December 2023, the top 10 Thai national parks accumulated a total income of 1,651,868,101 baht (US$47 million). Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi topped the chart with an income of 377,321,864 baht (US$10 million). Thailand is currently experiencing the “season of dust” and PM2.5 readings are expected to reach unsafe levels between Friday and Jan. 12, the Pollution Control Department (PCD) has warned. The warning came due to poor air circulation, resulting in dust accumulation.

Thousands of noise complaints from 4am bar closing

190 Killed In New Year Holiday Road Accidents So Far

With four days of New Year holidays having now passed, as many as 190 people have been killed in 1,570 accidents nationwide, while 1,574 were injured, and it was Kanchanaburi where the highest number of accidents occurred, while Bangkok recorded the most fatalities.

Covid-19 cases reach nearly 6,000 a day

The number of Covid-19 cases in Thailand has been on the rise in recent weeks, reaching nearly 6,000 cases per day on Jan. 2, the highest reported caseload since August 2023.

2024 is a year of the Wood Dragon, starting from Feb. 10 (Chinese New Year) and ending on Jan. 28, 2025 (Chinese New Year’s Eve).

The luckiest Chinese zodiac signs in 2024 are monkeys, roosters, and pigs. Then, with not quite so much luck, come oxes, rabbits, goats, and dogs. Dragons’ fortunes will be influenced by “opposition to Tai Sui”.

During the final three days of the year, the government recorded 1,150 traffic accidents that killed 128 people and injured 1,151 others across Thailand.

Social security fund faces bankruptcy in a decade

Speedboat Crashes Into Rocks In Phuket, Killing Russian Girl

The Phuket Regional Harbor Office received a report of a marine accident at 3:30 pm on Dec. 31 from the Andaman Marine Traffic and Safety Control Center, stating that a speedboat carrying seven passengers, the captain and one crew member, totaling nine people, had crashed into the rocks on the shore of Mai Thon Island, Chalong subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District, Phuket Province.

All of the individuals on the boat, aged 3 to 63, were injured, and two of them were critically injured: the boat driver and a 5-year-old Russian girl who lost consciousness. Sadly, she died later in the Chalong hospital. Continued …
