New 1st-class bus service from Bangkok airports to Hua Hin, Pattaya

State-run Transport Co. will launch a first-class bus service from Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports to Hua Hin and Pattaya on March 8.

There will be two round trips daily between Don Mueang airport and Hua Hin district in Prachuap Khiri Khan, a distance of 216 kilometers per trip. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. Continued …

Thailand Faces Surge in Influenza: 100,000 Cases, 9 Deaths

Thailand is grappling with a serious influenza outbreak, having witnessed nearly 100,000 infections alongside nine fatalities in just 15 days. The Ministry of Public Health has confirmed this increase, underlining schools as significant hotspots. In response, the government is mobilizing efforts, including the distribution of 4.5 million vaccine doses, to curb further spread.

The cyber police said most of the 260 scam workers who have been screened are victims, with only two to three having volunteered to work for the call-center criminals rather just one of them being trafficked as earlier stated.

The head of the Technology Crime Suppression Division police, said 50 cyber policemen are working with frontline agencies in collecting information on criminal activities of these call-center gangs. A minivan traveling downhill collided with an elephant crossing the road in Chonburi province early yesterday morning, leaving two people injured. The elephant initially walked away from the scene but was later found dead.

New Casino Rules May Bar Thais Without $1.5M Fixed Deposits

Thai casino bill scrutiny concluded

The Council of State, the government’s legal advisory body, has completed its scrutiny of the Entertainment Complex Bill, and an online public hearing will be held until March 1 so that parties can express their concerns before it is sent to Parliament.

Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) forecasts the country’s economy to expand by 2.8% in 2025, supported by rising government spending and tourism recovery.

Danucha Pichayanan, NESDC secretary-general, reported yesterday that Thailand’s economy grew 3.2% in Q4/2024, bringing the full-year growth to 2.5%, up from 2% in 2023. Endangered Leopard Cat Cub Rescued from Roadside in Lampang After Fleeing Wildfire

Officials from the Wiang Kosai National Park rescue team have successfully rescued a male leopard cat found collapsed at the side of the road, believed to have fled from a nearby wildfire. The team discovered the exhausted young leopard cat cub lying near the road leading to the Lam Huai Samai Luang forest, just outside the park’s protected area. Measures being advanced to restructure nine target industries

Industry restructuring is a key engine for driving the country’s economy, particularly in boosting the national GDP. For this reason, the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) is advancing measures to restructure nine target industries as part of the policy “Industrial Reform for a Modern, Clean, Convenient, and Transparent Economy”, aiming to increase gross domestic product by at least 1%.

The plan is expected to be presented to the Cabinet this month. The nine target industries for restructuring and boosting GDP are: Automotive industry; plastics industry; medical device industry; steel and metallurgy industry; robotics and automation industry; electrical and electronics industry; bio-based industry; food industry; and textile and garment industry. ThaiBev’s revenue rose by 2.2% in Q1 of the 2025 accounting year, reaching 92.265 billion baht. However, liquor earnings dropped by 12%, while beer and non-alcoholic beverages saw growth. EBITDA fell slightly by 0.8%.

Fishing ban off Prachuap Khiri Khan coast starts tomorrow

A fishing ban has been issued to allow fish stock to recover off the coasts of Prachuap Khiri Khan down to Surat Thani, says the Department of Fishery (DoF). The ban is issued over two periods — from Feb. 15 to May 15 and from May 16 to June 14, affecting multiple maritime zones.

Bangkok and 53 of the nation’s 76 provinces were shrouded by unsafe levels of ultrafine dust pollution yesterday, with thick smog levels blanketing mostly the central plains and the east, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said.

RE: Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax

“Thank you for the article ‘Nightmare scenario at PKK tax office over new expat tax‘ and thank you ‘Thesatat’ for being a ‘pipe cleaner’ trying to be a good person and file taxes in PKK. The head of the PKK tax office personally promised us at a meeting in Hua Hin that “All DTAs will be honored.” Clearly, he hasn’t shared that with his subordinates. Personally, I’m going through AIT (American International Tax Advisors) and let them deal with these issues. At the end of the day (which may be two to three years out – maybe more – we hope to pay only what is legally required.” – PB

Editor: We have asked the tax consultants we used for our previous reporting to assess this latest news, but this is probably just a lack of understanding on the part of local officials about the tax. We anticipated this might be a problem early on, as the law is ambiguous and there are roughly 90 dual tax treaties to be considered, not all the same. We doubt, at this stage, that there has been any education of local officials, and even if there is, the complications might make them resort to an “everyone has to pay the tax” mentality. There will probably be a lot of misinformation on this issue as we go forward and we will try to keep you informed as we hear about problems or solutions. Getting expert guidance as you have done is probably a wise move.

The 2024 remittance tax changes have introduced complexities that some local tax offices — especially in provincial areas — may not yet fully understand. Many expats have reported difficulties due to inconsistent guidance, as well as language barriers when trying to clarify their tax position.

“In cases like U.S. Social Security, the rules are clear: it is not taxable in Thailand, nor does it need to be included on a Thai tax return. However, misunderstandings at the local level can lead to unnecessary stress and potential disputes with tax authorities.

“For expats looking to avoid these difficulties, using a professional tax filing service can help ensure compliance while avoiding the frustration of dealing with tax offices unfamiliar with international tax agreements.”

Bangkok and 53 of the 76 provinces were shrouded with unsafe levels of ultrafine dust pollution this morning, with very thick smog levels blanketing mostly the central plain and the east, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Top Thai Officers Probed Over Links to Scams in Myanmar

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) is conducting an investigation into alleged connections between senior police officers and criminal activities linked to scam operations across the Burmese border. This action follows the transfer of five senior officers from Tak province, a move that has raised eyebrows due to the significant wealth of one of the officers.

At the heart of the investigation is Police Maj Gen Ekkarat Intasueb, acting chief of Inspection Division 6 for the Office of the Inspector General. Myanmar is preparing to return approximately 7,000 victims of call center scams to Thailand. Phumtham Wechayachai, deputy prime minister and defense minister, confirmed this plan, stressing that these victims should be repatriated directly to their home countries without being temporarily housed in Thailand.

After cutting electricity, internet and fuel supply from five points to Myanmar border townships where scam centers are operating, Deputy Prime Minister/Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is now expanding this strategy to three districts and an island in four provinces along the Thai-Cambodian border to suppress transnational criminals holed up across that border.

Smog again covers much of Thailand, PKK at orange level

Unsafe levels of ultrafine dust blanketed 48 out of the 76 Thai provinces, and Bangkok, today, with red levels in parts of the central plain and the east, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported.

Forty-one provinces were shrouded with orange levels (starting to affect health) of PM2.5 ranging from 38.6 to 73.3µg/m³. They included Ayutthaya, Bangkok, Chiang Rai, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Samut Prakan. Continued …

Regional deal signed to combat PM2.5 pollution

Thailand has signed an agreement with the entire membership of ASEAN to jointly deal with PM2.5, which is considered to be a transboundary haze. The harmful levels of PM2.5, from domestic and overseas sources, can affect the image of Thailand as an investment destination in Southeast Asia, according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

Thai Girl Thanks Swiss Saviour a Year After Life-Changing Rescue

Prachuap Khiri Khan Town: A serious option for long-term living

There are three places in my home province of Prachuap Khiri Khan where I like to spend time. Hua Hin is at the north end of the province. It’s the largest of the three, and is a popular tourist and expat destination, with a seemingly endless amount of goods and services.

Thai court rules traffic fines unlawful since 2020

Thailand’s top court has dropped a legal bombshell, ruling that traffic fines issued by the Royal Thai Police (RTP) since July 2020 were unlawful — potentially affecting millions of motorists.

Most of Thailand will experience a short period of cool weather from tomorrow until Monday, as a new wave of cold air blows into the northeastern region from China tonight, according to the Meteorological Department.

Over 100 daily deaths of children under five tied to air pollution in East Asia and the Pacific

As Thailand grapples with unhealthy levels of air pollution, leading to school closures and widespread health concerns, UNICEF’s latest analysis sheds light on the devastating impact of toxic air on children across East Asia and the Pacific. Air pollution, which peaks in many parts of the region during the dry season from now until April, is linked to over 100 deaths in children under five every day.

The analysis reveals that all children in East Asia and the Pacific – 500 million children in total – live in countries with unhealthy levels of air pollution. Household air pollution, caused by solid fuels used for cooking and heating, is linked to more than half of all air pollution-related deaths in children under five. Meanwhile, 325 million children live in countries where average annual particulate matter (PM2.5) levels exceed World Health Organization (WHO) guideline levels by more than five times. Continued …

The Myanmar’s Border Guard Force (BGF) has handed over 61 foreign victims who were deceived into working for scam call-centers and human trafficking networks in Shwe Kokko, Myawaddy, Myanmar.

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai received them at the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge 2 in Mae Sot, Tak province, yesterday. In 2024, a Bengal tiger mother was spotted in Kaeng Krachan National Park. She was followed by a single cub, exciting researchers as they looked through footage from trail cameras positioned throughout the protected land.

American and Thai wife lose 15.2 million baht in Hua Hin property fraud

An American man and his Thai wife are pursuing justice after being duped by a real estate firm into buying two plots of land and a house in Hua Hin, amounting to 15.2 million baht. Despite their investment, they have been unable to gain ownership of the property.

Bangkok residents suffered yesterday, with smog levels at red hazardous-to-health levels, and unsafe levels of ultrafine dust recorded in 15 of the 76 provinces, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Thailand’s electricity supply withdrawal from the Tachileik border township in Myanmar is expected to affect about 7,500 homes, five hospitals, 45 schools, 65 temples and 15 army camps, said Natkhanet Charasveesirikul, manager of Provincial Electricity Authority’s (PEA) Mae Sai office.

Thailand reports 1.3% inflation in January

The headline consumer price index (CPI) in Thailand rose 1.32% in January from a year earlier, after an increase of 1.2% the month before, the Ministry of Commerce said today.
